What Adult Students HATE about the ESL Teachers | ESL TIPS: Knowledge Extension and Feedback

  • My Adult student complained about OTHER ESL teachers! NO FEEDBACK
    We have so many English lessons online. There’s information overload on the internet already! But do you really understand why adult learners choose to have a teacher instead? .... THEY WANT FEEDBACK. For adults they want to know what they did well and what they could do better. They need recommendations and learning advice.
    1. Study English
    2. Know common errors
    3. Do not ask common getting-to-know questions
    4. Give corrections in a timely manner
    5. Balance positive and negative feedback
    6. Use the board or chatbox
    7. Give useful advice

    This is the reason why I don't really like to finish the lesson materials early. Because I like to teach them clearly until they understand it well. I don't proceed to other topics if they get confused. I always ask them if they understand and let them ask me which part they don't understand. Yes, we like to have salary because we are working. But it's different when you love your work and your priority is to make student learn. It's not about rushing it's all about learnings.

    Correction is a difficult balancing act. When and where do you offer correction? If you stop every-time the student makes an error it interrupts the flow of the conversation. Makes the conversation extremely tedious. It's better to make notes of students mistakes and go over them at the end of the class. This is coming from someone who has been teaching ESL at the university level for 27 years. I also never speak bad about other teachers with students. You may not know know their reason for doing things a certain way. It also looks very unprofessional.

    • @TeachaKaren
      @TeachaKaren  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think you're missing the point here, I am not giving disparaging remarks about my co-teachers, I am sharing a complaint from a student to spread awareness. This was actually appreciated by this company (Acadsoc) that they purchased the video from me and had all teachers watch this. I dunno, maybe to them, I did something right. I'm sorry if my approach is not your cup of tea. Anyway, thank you for your input on feedback. Maybe our teaching styles are different, someone who has 27 years of experience has a completely different perspective from someone like me who has 9 years. When you read about adult learning now, feedback must be given as soon as possible without interrupting students (fluency-focused) so that they would remember where they committed the error and it would be more timely and understandable. If you do it later, they may have already forgotten where they committed the mistake, thus causing the error to recur and the problem not being addressed/corrected.

    • @annamarie8872
      @annamarie8872 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I totally agree with you Wallace Galloway. I think it depends on the student, if the student ask you to correct their errors proactively then you can do as they requested but there are some students that don't want to be corrected specially during the class. You can just leave them the feedback after the lesson. And sorry Teach Karen, but I think that your way of teaching is a bit boastful.

    Love your content teacher! I´m learning portugues now in Brazil, and some things I didnt like about my teacher was, she talked A LOT. I didn´t have time to respond or felt like speaking wasnt part of the lesson. She gave information but, it was on top of each other so the grammar focus was lost. She also used time consuming apps to make it more interactive, like picture memory games or a shopping cart with vegetables. I would´ve probably liked it if I was 7. But I´m 33! I also gave her feedback (since Im studying TEFL now, and im learning bits and pieces of techniques) and told her wha i´d prefer to be done or how I prefer the classes to be like and she... revolted. Like ´´i did this and did that, i thought u wanted this..´´ If I were her, I would appreciate being given feedback by the students because then you d know exactly how to help them. Another teacher, always had a spotty internet and it took time for her to set things up like audio and oh how the call would cut every time she played useless videos. She didnt even take the initiative to offer an extension. That and she always cancelled. OMG Galit na galit lang ako sa comment section na ito. hahaha. I found a good one now, she seems more friendly, natural and I understand her better even if she doesnt speak english much. I never have to worry about her re-scheduling. She always had speaking activities. Finally! Anyway, thank you for your content Teacha Karen! Love your vibe so much. Sorry for 1000 word reaction paper. hahaha

    • @TeachaKaren
      @TeachaKaren  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love reaction papers lol!!!! I used to teach adults 10 years ago before I became an ESL teacher so I kinda have a deeper understanding of what we need and don't need as adults. Teaching adults can be crazy and can be a headache especially if you do not approach them the right way ... you'll definitely get a complaint.
      I suggest that when you're learning, when you're the student, let the teacher know what you want, need and how you prefer things to get done...but of course in a nice way. When teaching adults or kids, we (teachers) must always limit out talk time to 50-50 or 70-30 (30 percent talk time for teachers)

    Kahapon, first time kong maka-encounter ng adult student na lola na. Tapos last week lang ako nakapag-start magturo. Sobrang na-anxious ako nung nakita ko siya sa cam bago kami nagstart dahil alam kong mas may alam at wisdom siya kaysa sa akin. Pero siyempre, act normal with confidence lang sa actual class. Yun pala chill lang yung naging klase namin dahil nahihirapan siyang magbasa at magpronounce ng ibang mga English words. Sobrang natutuwa ako sa kanya pag nasasabi niya yun ng tama.
    So parang tinuturuan ko lang din yung Lola ko. Dun ko na-realize na it’s a privilege pala na marunong at nakakaintindi tayo ng English bilang second language at part na ng curriculum o ng kinalakihan natin.
    Second day na po namin ngayon at naka-book siya sa akin sa mga susunod pang mga araw. At nakakatuwa na lagi niya akong binigyan ng 5 star rating kahit di ko sinasabi 💖

    Thank you for making this video, Teacher Karen. I agree with you 💯. As tutors/teachers, we have a responsibility to each of our students/clients. The least we can do is correct them in a timely and friendly fashion.
    Also, get to know the student! I have 5+ notebooks filled with notes I've taken of each student. They are amazed when I ask them about something they mentioned in class, asking how I remembered. Easy; I wrote it down and made to ask them about it next time. It is not hard at all. Why are there tutors who struggle with this? 😢

    Useful tips. However, you yourself could slow down a bit when you talk to your students. Your video shows a more adequate "teaching-speed"approach than the ones on your lesson inserts. I am almost certain that on the last session-example, the student only understood half of what you were trying to explain. Feedback, like you say, is extremely important. I have learned that most students are mostly interested on learning through correction than to finishing your lesson plan. Useful video. Thanks.

    1. 100% on intoductions...stop wasting their time
    2. Ask your students when they actually want feedback. Some want to be corrected immediately. Some prefer at the end of the session.
    3. Stop speaking to your students as if you are trying to sell a product(you). If you are speaking in a salesman/woman tone, you will only annoy, other than intrigue, your students.
    Be yourself and and don't flaunt your abilities. Unfortunately, some teachers think they are much better than others. Record and listen to your sessions. Is that really you? If not, stop trying to imitate others and find your own groove.
    Trying to mirror other teachers ie. 'teacha Karen', will often cause more problems. Learn from others but don't imitate

      @@TeachaKarenHi! Appreciate all that you do, but I don't agree that this is correct in this instance. The rule of thumb for who or whom is if you can use the word he or she, then you use who. If you can use the word him or then, then use whom. I apologise if I'm speaking out of turn! 😊

      Sure thing, kaya lang kasi ang nanotice ko naman is hindi masyado nagrereklamo ang Japanese students. What they only dislike is us overly using their language. hindi sila fan ng translanguaging.

    This is very helpful talaga!!! 💯 Naiintimidate ako kapag working adult ang student. Guilty rin ako na gustong matapos ang lesson material. 😂 Tsaka 1 problem pa teach ay minsan kasi talaga ang student, hindi maintindihan yung English niya or minsan ang hina ng boses :( hindi ko maisulat sa notepad ang sinasabi niya to correct his grammar.
    Tsaka teach, namomroblema rin ako sa mga itatanong ko sa warm up part tuwinng morning classes ko. Paulit ulit ang tanong ko "how was your sleep?" "Did you have a dream last night?" 😂😂😂 Hahahaha

      Kapag regulars talaga mahirap na magrapport kasi mahahlata nila kapag paulit ulit, kaya dapat naaalala natin yung mga previous kwento o napagusapan na para yun ang pwede mo ibring up :) Or pwedeng ikaw ang makwento saglit tapos magtanong ka kung naexperience na nila yun :)

    Mayroon din pong iba ayaw ng feedback hehe . I recently got a job where I teach adult as an ESL teacher. Ayaw ng iba ng feedback, pag i correct mo sila ayaw na nilang magsalita 😅. Kaya kinakabahan talaga ako parati pag papasok na ko and my schedule class ako, kasi di pa ako hasa paano ba mag build ng rapport sa mga adult, especially na mas matanda pa sila sakin. May 50 up.😊😊 Gusto ko na nga mag resign😅😭 kaso di pwede hahaha kailangan may trabaho😅.Bago pa naman kaya siguro pwede ko pa patawarin sarili ko at mag improve😭. Ang iba naman gusto ng feedback pero nahihirapan din akong magbigay ng correction ng hindi sila na o offend. Sinasabi ko nalang Ok great but instead of chu2 we can also say chu2..... Ewan ko kung ok lang ba to na way kasi naghihintay pa ako ng feedback form galing sa students ko😅.
    Nahihirapan din akong intindihin ang pronunciation ng iba.Ang hirap din intindihin kung ano sinabi nila.1st student ko 54 sabi niya I like loaning in early morning. Di ko talaga na gets ano, gusto niya mag loan o ano. Did you say I like loaning? Sabi niya no loaning, sa isip ko ana ba talaga dios ko tapos pina spell ko nalang learning pala😭
    Anyways thank you sa mga free videos teacher Karen😊😊💖💖.God bless you💖

    • @TeachaKaren
      @TeachaKaren  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Better siguro kung magtanong ka sa kanila, lalo kung first time students mo, "may I give you feedback about your pronunication, grammar etc?". Or "because I want to help you improve on your English proficiency, I will be giving feedback in class. Is that okay with you?". Kumbaga kunin mo muna approval nila for feedback tsaka ka magbigay :) ipaintindi mo na you are just trying to help kasi di ka naman basta kausap lang e, teacher ka nila :)

      You are correct we cannot satisfy everyone. However, you cannot be a successful teacher is you do not know how to respond to you student's needs. Being a good teacher calls for awareness and responsiveness to students' needs.

    I prefer adult students/ university students than children. Most especially Koreans or Japanese ☺️ they are so friendly, respectful and understanding. They just love the 80/20 rule. 80% let them talk , then the rest 20% will be the teacher's questions or response.

    Wow you got me tired with your speech, emphasizing too much, too loud and too rushed ! Also giving feedback right away might not always be appropriate , its a delicate balance and would say taking notes and going over them at the end of the class is a better approach by not putting students on the spot!
