Most skateboard hardware is UNF 10-32 Grade-8 bolts made of 18-8 stainless steel, referring to a grade of stainless steel with approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel. I remember going to the hardware store as a kid to get replacement hardware for my board, and I would break 2 a day. It was ridiculously annoying, of course I was just getting whatever nuts and bolts would fit and didn't really know any better. Yep! If you got the Raw Independent 139 Stage 11 trucks with an 1/8th inch riser, 1" Indy Cross bolts hardware would fit perfectly. (1" would be the smallest hardware that would work with the 1/8th inch risers.) 👍 - Tim
What is the function of the risers? Also I seem to have trouble tightening the nuts on the wheels. If im gonna let em spin the nuts are too loose, and if I just tighten them up a little there is no spin at all. Is it due to the bearings being put in incorrectly? They looked the same on both sides. But the wheels fell off when I tried it out and now I need new nuts lol
The riser pads are there to give more clearance between the top of your wheel and the bottom of your deck. This is so that if you turn very sharply or land with your weight on one side the deck, it is less likely to pinch the underside of the deck and put on the brakes. Usually it's called wheelbite when the wheel touches the underside of the deck and it can cause you to fall. As far as the axle nuts go, it sounds like the nuts are just stripped and you need some new ones. Make sure you get actual locknut axle nuts (the ones that come stock on all trucks) because regular nuts (without the nylon lock) wont stay tightened at all. I hope that helps!🛹👍 Cheers! - Tim
With 1/2" risers, you'll need at least 1 3/8" hardware, but nobody really makes 1 3/8" skateboard hardware, so you'll have to go up to 1 1/2". Cheers! - Tim www.tactics.com/skateboard-hardware/rs-1+1~2in
My truck bolts almost always come packaged with flat washers included. Is it advisable to use them between the nut and baseplate, or just optional? Good video, and thanks!
Are you getting actual skate-brand hardware? I've never seen them come with washers. 🤔 Anyway, you don't need to use washers on the truck mounting hardware. 👍 - Tim
@@tacticsboardshop It is skateboard mounting hardware (MuirSkate Beasto Hardware). I just received a new pack a few days ago. I don't mind using the washers, just didn't know if it was actually necessary. Thanks for the quick response!
Yep! That'll work, your board might feel pretty tall, you could probably get away with 1/8" risers and 1 1/8" hardware and be fine. But if you ride your trucks super loose or you're concerned about wheelbite, the 1/4 inch risers will be good. 👍 - Tim
If you just have a deck and trucks, then you can use 7/8" hardware and it'll fit exactly flush. You can also use 1 inch hardware to give yourself some extra threads, but I wouldn't go any longer than 1 inch. 👍 Cheers! - Tim
The size of the deck doesn't affect the hardware length. It just depends on if you want to use risers or not. If you're not using riser pads under your trucks, then you'll be good with 7/8th or 1 inch hardware. If you are using risers, then get longer hardware accordingly. I hope that helps! - Tim 🛹👍
Hey I just built a new setup. Running 55mm wheels on Thunder Hollow Lights. It's still on the way. Do you think I'll need 1/8 risers to avoid wheel bite? Therefore 1" hardware. If I don't use risers would you go 7/8" or 1" hardware? Lastly why do most pro street skaters not run risers is it kinda not cool to, or is it because they typically run 52mm wheels and don't need risers? Thanks!
If you like your trucks really loose, then it might be a good idea to have some risers so you're not constantly getting wheelbite. If you're not going to use the risers, 7/8th is the smallest you can use, but using 1 inch hardware without risers is completely fine. There are plenty of Pros that use risers, and it just depends on their style and where they are. If they're the type of pro that does a bunch of tech stuff with small wheels and only skates perfectly smooth California spots, then they might not use them. But if they're skating Portland or UK crust, then they are probably using bigger wheels with risers. There's nothing "uncool" about risers, it's just about your preferences. I hope that helps! Cheers! - Tim
I have venture high trucks with 56 mm wheels, I feel very high off the ground and my hardware is loosening and falling off. I have bones 7/8 hardware. Does the height of the trucks affect the hardware issue?
Nope, the overall height of the axle doesn't factor into it. You only have to factor in the the thickness of the deck and baseplate. So if you have an unusually thick board or baseplate, the 7/8 hardware might not be able to tighten enough to reach the nylon lock. 7/8 hardware usually works with 7-ply decks and standard skateboard trucks, but you could get 1-inch hardware to give yourself a little bit of a buffer. Cheers! - Tim
You don't have to, but you also don't want the hardware bolts sticking out super far like in the thumbnail. If you want to get hardware that's a 1/4 inch longer than the minimum, then that's completely fine. Cheers! - Tim
I'm so dumb I have 1/5 hardware and a normal deck but 7/8 and 1 wasn't big enough so I just did 1/5 is that still okay I mean does it make any difference if I had like smaller hardware
Do you mean 1/5" or do you mean 1.5" hardware? 1/5 would mean one fifth of an inch, and that's not gonna work. But if you mean 1.5 inch hardware, then yes it will work, but it will stick out pretty far and look kind of weird. Why was the 1 inch hardware too small? Do you have riser pads or trucks with a thick baseplate? Sorry for bombarding you with questions! 😅👍 - Tim
What hardware size should I use if I have a 8.0 deck, 148 thunder trucks 8.25 axel, 52mm wheels and no riser pads? Should I go for 7/8 or 1 inch Allen hardware just to be safe?

You can still skate it like that, but I agree that it's annoying when they stick out a little. You're gonna have to find a way to brute force tighten it by either by using your screwdriver or 3/8 wrench on the nut side. If your hardware is stripped and it's making it impossible to tighten fully, then you should probably get some new hardware which fortunately is super cheap. I hope this helps a little! - Tim
Yes, if you let the hardware get super loose, the 7/8 hardware will fall out sooner than 1 inch simply because there aren't as many threads. But you'd have to let it get super loose before then. Usually you'll notice the hardware making a rattling sound long before it gets so loose that it'll fall off completely, so it's not really something to be super concerned with. But if it makes you nervous, then just get the 1 inch hardware. 👍 Cheers! - Tim
Are the plies very dense? Is it a Flight deck board or a fiberglass longboard deck? If the plies are denser than regular maple, it's sometimes difficult to countersink the hardware till it's flush. So I guess just try to tighten the hardware a little more until it's flush with the top. Unless you have dome headed hardware, then you'd just have to get different hardware. I hope that helps! - Tim

Talk about hardware under griptape, or hardware over griptape? I say under because you would never put grit under a screw head in any other application.
The bolts should definitely over the grip, because the hardware nuts loosen from the vibrations of riding and need to be tightened regularly. If the bolt heads are under the grip, you can't use the Phillips/Allen head to stabilize the bolt as you tighten the lock nut and the bolt just spins in place rather than the nut tightening. The stickiness of the griptape won't hold the top of the bolt hard enough to fully tighten the hardware. Also, if you wanted to keep your hardware when switching boards, you would have to remove the old grip off the deck in order to retrieve the bolts, and peeling grip is a pain in the butt! 😆 Cheers! - Tim

What are colored cross bolts used for? Can they used to differentiate the front vs the back end of the deck with different colored cross bolts for example? If so, what configuration is best/popular or is it a matter of preference? Thx ヘ( °ω°)ー
It's completely preference. I like to have 2 coloreds bolts towards the nose so I can immediately determine the front/back, but you can do whatever you want. Cheers! - Tim
What kind of bolts are they? Also, what kind of board is it? Some decks that have fiberglass plies or non-maple construction make it a lot harder to counter sink the hardware.

Yep! If you got the Raw Independent 139 Stage 11 trucks with an 1/8th inch riser, 1" Indy Cross bolts hardware would fit perfectly. (1" would be the smallest hardware that would work with the 1/8th inch risers.) 👍 - Tim
@@tacticsboardshop thank u so much!! this really helped 🔥🔥🔥
- Tim
So if I have riser pads that are size 1/2 what size of hardware do I need to get???
With 1/2" risers, you'll need at least 1 3/8" hardware, but nobody really makes 1 3/8" skateboard hardware, so you'll have to go up to 1 1/2". Cheers! - Tim

You'll need at least 1 inch hardware for an exact fit. But if you want a little extra length then go with 1 1/8 inch. 👍 - Tim

I wanna ride 58mm wheels, should i get t 1/4 inch risers with 1 1/4 hardware?
Yep! That'll work, your board might feel pretty tall, you could probably get away with 1/8" risers and 1 1/8" hardware and be fine. But if you ride your trucks super loose or you're concerned about wheelbite, the 1/4 inch risers will be good. 👍 - Tim
My hardware is falling out and i wanne buy new ones i dont know witch ones i need i got independent trucks 144 and just a deck ?
If you just have a deck and trucks, then you can use 7/8" hardware and it'll fit exactly flush. You can also use 1 inch hardware to give yourself some extra threads, but I wouldn't go any longer than 1 inch. 👍 Cheers! - Tim
I got the wrong hardware to long and now the nut is stuck 😭. Any tips?🙏
What hardware size for 8.25 size baker deck
The size of the deck doesn't affect the hardware length. It just depends on if you want to use risers or not. If you're not using riser pads under your trucks, then you'll be good with 7/8th or 1 inch hardware. If you are using risers, then get longer hardware accordingly. I hope that helps! - Tim 🛹👍
@ ohhh ok thank you 🙏
Hey I just built a new setup.
Cheers! - Tim
i have 60mm wheels but i don’t want wheel bite. what size riser do you recommend?
If your trucks are on the tighter end then you should be okay with 1/8 inch risers, but if they're looser then go with 1/4 inch risers. 👍 - Tim
Cheers! - Tim
hey can u use a 1 inch without risers i’m getting my first board
Yep! You certainly can. 👍
What size hardware should I use for 1/4 riser pads?
You would at least 1 1/8 inch, but you could do 1 1/4 inch just to be safe. 👍 - Tim
Do you have to use the smallest size posible ? Sorry I’m new to this
You don't have to, but you also don't want the hardware bolts sticking out super far like in the thumbnail.
😅👍 - Tim

What should I do if the hardware from my old deck arent flush with the new deck? They kind of stay above and wont go deeper, and its quite annoying :/
- Tim
@@tacticsboardshop thanks for replying, i carved the board a bit with a stanley knife and it fits snug now, thanks again :)
if u have 7/8 hardware, will it fall out “faster” than an 1 inch hardware? (without any risers)
👍 Cheers! - Tim
I have a 5 ply deck and the hardware sticks out from the top, what’s the cause of this?

😆 Cheers! - Tim
