Heh Heh. You'll be glad you didn't have the ability to buy a cobra mk4. It's simply a ruined cobra mk3. Everything that the mk3 fun has been replaced in the mk4 with more that equals less. It's made heavier that slows it down. It has slightly better shields and armour, but not better enough that they last as long enough to counter the higher amount of hits you'll take due to its massively lower manoeuvrability. It has an extra hard point but this is moot as the mk4 is not actually as good in combat as the mk3. Repeated combat tests between the mk3 and mk4 have proven this to be the case as the mk3 wins 9 out 10 duels with the mk4. Put simply the Cobra mk4 is a lemon.
I've seen Yamiks's video on it. Let's just say I'm glad as well for NOT having the ability to buy it. Elite Dangerous is probably the only game to have "pay-to-loss" item. lol
@@PaiSAMSEN I have been flying in elite dangerous since the alpha phase so I can get a cobra mk4. I bought one a long time ago, tested it in every way possible, hated it and sold it, replaced it with a cobra mk3 and never looked back at cobra mk4. It really is that bad.

Hey. I actually did take my Mk.IV to Colonia. And it was fantastic. It has a decent jump range and enough internals to fill in with all the QOL modules you need. It's...cozy. It felt nice to travel in it. It's not a great ship. But it's a ship that has a personality. And that's worth everything.

Many years ago I had a Cobra MK4 for Exploration, not long after getting it I switched from XB1 to PS4 and had to wait years for the PS4 version of Elite and when it was finally released there was no way of obtaining a Cobra MK4 on PS4.... I don't really miss it though but it was nice have such a rare ship
The corvette, with weapon focused distributor and 2 huge over charged plasmas is a thing of beauty. Give them the effect to do more damage as you heat up and have fun

Everyone is so focussed in the Corvette showcase in Cobra 4 review that no one actually noticed that the ending music of the Imperial Cutter review and this review is the same.
I never realized I was the only one to keep my mk.IV around. It is my around-the-bubble taxi. Sure not an impressive job title but I end up piloting it regularly enough. I have fond memories of it, of how I got it, and how it reminds me of the days I had a mk.III. For a time it was a smuggler and launched a fair share of SRVs back when driving across nameless planets was the best and only way to get resources for a game system that only served to get people to quit. Memories.
LOL, well done sir. From what I've heard (didn't start playing until after Horizons, so I'm not in the Cobra IV Club), the Cobra IV is an excellent SRV hauler. For when you're going to do silly things with SRVs that will blow many of them up. You know, for all the many times you do SRV events. ;)
I took my maiden voyage to Colonia in my "Cobra Mk4". Full combat build and 19.8 ly jump range took nearly 1000 hours with all my squirrel detours. Needless to say, my "Mk4" now lives in Colonia and I bought another for the bubble instead of suffering more.
The corvette is a nice ship. I named mine Outlaw Star MK II. A little engineering and it becomes a monster. I do wish they would release the cobra MK IV for us.
i engineered the shit out of the covfefe and with 2 huge plasma accelerator with plasma slug and focused(the one with the shot speed increase) and it just one shot or crippled every medium ship i can find. that ship is a beast. i love it.
I keep coming back to this video over time. It was pleasantly surprising and it ALWAYS give me the goosebumps everytime you show off what the Cobra MKIV substitute really is. A very wonderful choice of music and timing. Thank you, this is my most favorite of your awesome videos, Pilot. Fly safe o7
IMO it is mines better miner than mk3. I think it's the best small miner period. I can spaciously fit 46 tons of cargo with as much limpets as my lasers can keep up with. When I need a quickie to satisfy my little miner itch, mk4 nets me an easy 30-50M, with jump range (or agility tbf) not terribly behind a keel back. Plus, exclusivity!
I seriously think I was all of two days off of being able to own the ship... Kind of glad that I didn't get it though, man it's... ...I dunno, that Corvette sure looks gorgeous though. Especially with that skin....
I have (had) the Cobra Mk IV, it was my step up from the Adder. It was OK, but terribly heat sensitive, next to impossible to fuel scoop without getting high heat warnings. Not particularly nimble and definitely lacks speed. It's better cargo capacity was useful in getting my next craft - the Asp Explorer.
The reason it is no use is because we paid for it being early backers. As with all the extras you can buy, it's all cosmetic fluff, imagine if it was amazing, FD would get stick for having a pay to win item in game. It is however better than the "special" ship we got for getting NMS early! The only early access bonus i thought was any value was when we pre ordered Star Trek Online life member. cant even remember what i got for SWTOR.
This review series is great ^-^ going into the different strengths/weaknesses of each ship, but keeping it interesting and fun (and in-universe/in-character, no less heh) with some great cinematic shots all around Also, the sorta subtle/loose Top Gear (and in this case, Freakazoid "Scream-o-Vision") nods are awesome lol

Lol you can buy a Cobra mkIV at Pascal Orbital in star system Sui Guei. Price is roughly 765k, which is a lot less than a Corvette, and doesn't require reputation grinding. Check it out, and give a *real* review of it! Yamiks hates it, and I'm sure everyone else does too, but it'd be cool to see it in action!
I gotta say, this may be my favorite video of yours (no easy statement). Transitioning from those first seconds of cognitive dissonance to "I see what you did there" is truly humorous and then continues to LOL moments. This video works on so many levels that it is like a meta, wrapped in a meta, inside a meta. I cannot give you higher praise! BRAVO!!!
Yeah I have two of these "Cobra MkIV's". One for Combat and the other for trading, mining, and exploration. Everything is maxxed engineering wise. I have 52ly jump range on the trader and 41 on the combat unit. It will out turn any Anaconda. It's also nice to be able to mine a HazRes with fighter cover. I don't have much to spend my credits on so having nearly Cr 2billion wrapped up in these is not a problem. Particularly when I can easily hoover up CR500million in an hour long mining run. Hands down the BEST small Big ship in Elite Dangerous.
I wish to speak about the Cobra Mk.IV and its bad reputation. Yamiks called it one of the two worst ships in Elite, at the same time he placed the Cobra Mk.III among the very best ones. And he is not the only one; many people think the Cobra Mk.IV is complete rubbish, some who don't even own it. Now, I am not going to claim I know better than most Elite players, but I'm still not sure I agree with the verdict this ship has received. I recently came back to Elite Dangerous as a closed-alpha backer, I hadn't played the game in ages, since before Horizons, since before launch actually, and I hadn't played it much. I came back and lately I have enjoyed myself immensely, far more than the first time, probably because I now knew what kind of game I went into again. And I fell in love with the Cobra Mk.IV. I hope to address some of its flaws, but also its strengths, here. I will compare the ships, and what they do, Mk.III and Mk.IV. -Without modifications mind you; for this is from the perspective of a sort of new player. Exploration; The Cobra Mk.III is better. Pure and simple, the longer jump range you can get from the Mk.III makes it the best choice. While it has less internal slots, it doesn't matter really. The Cobra Mk.III can have a pretty good exploration load-out and using that extra internal capacity on the Cobra Mk.IV simply reduces the jump range a tiny bit more, depending on what you equip of course. That said, the advantage in jump range isn't that big and the second thing that makes me call the Cobra Mk.III better is its agility. Being agile is under-rated when you are an explorer. Combat; The Cobra Mk.III, but its closer than one might think. The Cobra Mk.III has about 30% better speed, and a similar, if not equally large, advantage in turn-rate. While it has one weapon less, since the ships have the same power-output, that means its easier to manage to power of the Cobra Mk.III, and this is significant, for it tells you it is easier to equip the Cobra Mk.III and it is almost as if it wants you to equip it to your hearts content. The shields are the same. Why would anyone take the Cobra MK.IV into combat? Well.. .. I would. The Cobra Mk.IV isn't the same combatant, but its not that much worse, and it depends on how well you like flying it, as much as how you fly it. It is slower, its biggest drawback, and there is less agility, but fully equipped it can be a surprisingly tough ship for a small ship, with more than 1600 hull points, and you are still able to maneuver. At least I felt I was. And it does have five guns. Its like comparing a Spitfire to a Typhoon or a Messerschmidt 109 to a Messerschmidt 110. Yes, you trade off some agility, but you gain endurance and destructive power. I liked flying the Cobra Mk.IV into combat, I killed Python's with it Bounty Hunting (PvE mind you), Competent, Expert and Master. I took both the Cobra Mk.III and Mk.IV into combat, and despite finding the Cobra Mk.III slightly better, I kept flying the Cobra Mk.IV. It brought me home. Trading; The Cobra Mk.IV. While we all love the Cobra Mk.III it simply cannot carry as much. The Cobra Mk.IV can carry more cargo, that's it. Jump range difference doesn't matter all that much, unless you are making a long trip, and the difference isn't that great, at least not without mods. A couple of light years, which in the great scheme of things make little difference. Mining; The Cobra Mk.IV. Simply put the Cobra Mk. IV has two more internals, and whether you use it for a cargo rack, more limpets or another refinery or something else, the Cobra Mk.IV can be better equiped, most likely mine faster. It also has 3 light weapon slots to the Cobra. Mk.III's 2 light weapon slots. The Cobra Mk.IV can have three mining lasers and still keep a couple of guns for popping bounties if you get attacked. Unless you are in a hazard area, the system security will help you. Despite some miners liking the agility of the Cobra Mk.III to fly between the rocks, the Cobra Mk.IV simply does the mining part better. Yet, the Cobra Mk.IV is condemned, and I realize why. Everybody who usually can fly the Cobra Mk.IV can also pick to fly the Python, the Anaconda, the Krait Mk.II, and if they are feeling nostalgic, the Cobra Mk.III. It is the original after all. Why would they chose to fly its slower and somewhat plodding cousin? Also, with modifications the difference between the designs become even more visible. Simply put, there are so many more and better options than the Cobra Mk.IV for veteran commanders. And that is the tragedy of the Cobra Mk.IV, for coming back as more or less a new player, I fell in love with the Cobra Mk.IV. It is a very good ship, for a new player, but to new players it won't be available, and the few it is available for are actually old players that have either reset their accounts or simply not played it since way back when, such as me. It is such a nice beginner ship, in a low price range, easily affordable. It gives you a few harsh lessens, despite being a small ship you sometimes feel you are flying something larger. It teaches you to manage your power properly. The Cobra Mk.IV teaches you how to equip a craft for a certain kind of job, what you need to be a trader, miner or bounty hunter, or even a pirate. It can actually be a very nice little pirate ship as well. The tragedy, as I mentioned, is it is not available to new players. If it was it would probably not have the awful reputation it has. As it is it is only available to old, veteran players, and only a small minority of them, and that condemns it, for it is measured against galactic champions when it is a blue-collar worker. Perhaps if it had been called the Lacon Type-8 people wouldn't have expected it to perform as well as the Cobra Mk.III and instead sung its praises for its good mining abilities and capability as an armed transport or pirate vessel? - I would be willing to forfeit the uniqueness of being one of the few that can own this ship; I would have it be available to everyone if I could. It would give the Cobra Mk.IV a purpose, a place amongst the stars, I would let it be experienced by new players. I do not know if I am the only one that feels this way. Perhaps I have fallen in love with a ship everybody else avoids, but I don't mind. Because I like this ship. -CMDR Ewalden

The Cobra MkIV's exclusivity is stupid. IIRC PS3 players never even got the chance to unlock it. FDev should make it a reward for double Elite, that way it'd be possible to have every ship, and by that point it's too late for it to affect game balance.
This was precisely my takeaway from this as well. In fact, I wonder if there's any way to get one to Beagle Point? Because you just know THAT would be a freaking achievement!

IMO it is mines better miner than mk3. I think it's the best small miner period. I can spaciously fit 46 tons of cargo with as much limpets as my lasers can keep up with. When I need a quickie to satisfy my little miner itch, mk4 nets me an easy 30-50M, with jump range (or agility tbf) not terribly behind a keel back. Plus, exclusivity!

Good to know I'm not the only one who uses that long nose as an additional weapon. It just seems much faster to blow up the target by ramming it.

I have (had) the Cobra Mk IV, it was my step up from the Adder. It was OK, but terribly heat sensitive, next to impossible to fuel scoop without getting high heat warnings. Not particularly nimble and definitely lacks speed. It's better cargo capacity was useful in getting my next craft - the Asp Explorer.

The reason it is no use is because we paid for it being early backers. As with all the extras you can buy, it's all cosmetic fluff, imagine if it was amazing, FD would get stick for having a pay to win item in game. It is however better than the "special" ship we got for getting NMS early! The only early access bonus i thought was any value was when we pre ordered Star Trek Online life member. cant even remember what i got for SWTOR.
This review series is great ^-^ going into the different strengths/weaknesses of each ship, but keeping it interesting and fun (and in-universe/in-character, no less heh) with some great cinematic shots all around
Also, the sorta subtle/loose Top Gear (and in this case, Freakazoid "Scream-o-Vision") nods are awesome lol

Lol you can buy a Cobra mkIV at Pascal Orbital in star system Sui Guei. Price is roughly 765k, which is a lot less than a Corvette, and doesn't require reputation grinding. Check it out, and give a *real* review of it! Yamiks hates it, and I'm sure everyone else does too, but it'd be cool to see it in action!

Transitioning from those first seconds of cognitive dissonance to "I see what you did there" is truly humorous and then continues to LOL moments. Yeah I have two of these "Cobra MkIV's". One for Combat and the other for trading, mining, and exploration. Everything is maxxed engineering wise. I have 52ly jump range on the trader and 41 on the combat unit. It will out turn any Anaconda. It's also nice to be able to mine a HazRes with fighter cover. I don't have much to spend my credits on so having nearly Cr 2billion wrapped up in these is not a problem. Particularly when I can easily hoover up CR500million in an hour long mining run. Hands down the BEST small Big ship in Elite Dangerous.

I wish to speak about the Cobra Mk.IV and its bad reputation. Yamiks called it one of the two worst ships in Elite, at the same time he placed the Cobra Mk.III among the very best ones. And he is not the only one; many people think the Cobra Mk.IV is complete rubbish, some who don't even own it. Now, I am not going to claim I know better than most Elite players, but I'm still not sure I agree with the verdict this ship has received. I recently came back to Elite Dangerous as a closed-alpha backer, I hadn't played the game in ages, since before Horizons, since before launch actually, and I hadn't played it much. I came back and lately I have enjoyed myself immensely, far more than the first time, probably because I now knew what kind of game I went into again. And I fell in love with the Cobra Mk.IV. I hope to address some of its flaws, but also its strengths, here.
I will compare the ships, and what they do, Mk.III and Mk.IV.
-Without modifications mind you; for this is from the perspective of a sort of new player.
Exploration; The Cobra Mk.III is better.
Pure and simple, the longer jump range you can get from the Mk.III makes it the best choice. While it has less internal slots, it doesn't matter really. The Cobra Mk.III can have a pretty good exploration load-out and using that extra internal capacity on the Cobra Mk.IV simply reduces the jump range a tiny bit more, depending on what you equip of course. That said, the advantage in jump range isn't that big and the second thing that makes me call the Cobra Mk.III better is its agility. Being agile is under-rated when you are an explorer.
Combat; The Cobra Mk.III, but its closer than one might think.
The Cobra Mk.III has about 30% better speed, and a similar, if not equally large, advantage in turn-rate. While it has one weapon less, since the ships have the same power-output, that means its easier to manage to power of the Cobra Mk.III, and this is significant, for it tells you it is easier to equip the Cobra Mk.III and it is almost as if it wants you to equip it to your hearts content. The shields are the same. Why would anyone take the Cobra MK.IV into combat? Well..
.. I would.
The Cobra Mk.IV isn't the same combatant, but its not that much worse, and it depends on how well you like flying it, as much as how you fly it. It is slower, its biggest drawback, and there is less agility, but fully equipped it can be a surprisingly tough ship for a small ship, with more than 1600 hull points, and you are still able to maneuver. At least I felt I was. And it does have five guns. Its like comparing a Spitfire to a Typhoon or a Messerschmidt 109 to a Messerschmidt 110. Yes, you trade off some agility, but you gain endurance and destructive power. I liked flying the Cobra Mk.IV into combat, I killed Python's with it Bounty Hunting (PvE mind you), Competent, Expert and Master. I took both the Cobra Mk.III and Mk.IV into combat, and despite finding the Cobra Mk.III slightly better, I kept flying the Cobra Mk.IV. It brought me home.
Trading; The Cobra Mk.IV.
While we all love the Cobra Mk.III it simply cannot carry as much. The Cobra Mk.IV can carry more cargo, that's it. Jump range difference doesn't matter all that much, unless you are making a long trip, and the difference isn't that great, at least not without mods. A couple of light years, which in the great scheme of things make little difference.
Mining; The Cobra Mk.IV.
Simply put the Cobra Mk. IV has two more internals, and whether you use it for a cargo rack, more limpets or another refinery or something else, the Cobra Mk.IV can be better equiped, most likely mine faster. It also has 3 light weapon slots to the Cobra. Mk.III's 2 light weapon slots. The Cobra Mk.IV can have three mining lasers and still keep a couple of guns for popping bounties if you get attacked. Unless you are in a hazard area, the system security will help you. Despite some miners liking the agility of the Cobra Mk.III to fly between the rocks, the Cobra Mk.IV simply does the mining part better.
Yet, the Cobra Mk.IV is condemned, and I realize why.
Everybody who usually can fly the Cobra Mk.IV can also pick to fly the Python, the Anaconda, the Krait Mk.II, and if they are feeling nostalgic, the Cobra Mk.III. It is the original after all. Why would they chose to fly its slower and somewhat plodding cousin? Also, with modifications the difference between the designs become even more visible. Simply put, there are so many more and better options than the Cobra Mk.IV for veteran commanders.
And that is the tragedy of the Cobra Mk.IV, for coming back as more or less a new player, I fell in love with the Cobra Mk.IV. It is a very good ship, for a new player, but to new players it won't be available, and the few it is available for are actually old players that have either reset their accounts or simply not played it since way back when, such as me. It is such a nice beginner ship, in a low price range, easily affordable. It gives you a few harsh lessens, despite being a small ship you sometimes feel you are flying something larger. It teaches you to manage your power properly. The Cobra Mk.IV teaches you how to equip a craft for a certain kind of job, what you need to be a trader, miner or bounty hunter, or even a pirate. It can actually be a very nice little pirate ship as well.
The tragedy, as I mentioned, is it is not available to new players. If it was it would probably not have the awful reputation it has. As it is it is only available to old, veteran players, and only a small minority of them, and that condemns it, for it is measured against galactic champions when it is a blue-collar worker. Perhaps if it had been called the Lacon Type-8 people wouldn't have expected it to perform as well as the Cobra Mk.III and instead sung its praises for its good mining abilities and capability as an armed transport or pirate vessel?
- I would be willing to forfeit the uniqueness of being one of the few that can own this ship; I would have it be available to everyone if I could. It would give the Cobra Mk.IV a purpose, a place amongst the stars, I would let it be experienced by new players. I do not know if I am the only one that feels this way. Perhaps I have fallen in love with a ship everybody else avoids, but I don't mind.
Because I like this ship.

The Cobra MkIV's exclusivity is stupid.
IIRC PS3 players never even got the chance to unlock it.
FDev should make it a reward for double Elite, that way it'd be possible to have every ship, and by that point it's too late for it to affect game balance.
