This is really a fun lesson for playing with your style, using the brush . Nice to see you using quick laid out guide lines, and not having to rule out everything to but still have guide lines.
This is absolutely the most helpful video I have watched on brush lettering and I have watched A LOT of videos. I'm new to the brush lettering world and have invested in a waterbrush as well as some waterbrush pens. Most people just say "thin lines on the upstrokes and thick lines on the down strokes" which, yes, is important, but I love the tip to use the lines to practice getting your lettering the way you want it to be. I will definitely be watching more videos and waiting for new uploads!!
Hope you can get the relaxed sleep you need so you can do a great job with your lettering. (It makes a difference to tackle a creative project refreshed from a night's sleep. Whatever the root cause is, you may --**MAY**--benefit from relevant herbs taken at bedtime, along with magnesium.) Since this is a lettering tutorial, we won't get into specifics. Wishing you success with your lettering. I know I am glad to have found this channel, too!
Thank you so much for this video! I have been struggling for over 5 months or so now trying to learn typography and hand lettering but this was such a help! I have taken class after class and nothing has been as helpful as this! I would love to see more videos with different styles of lettering as well!
This really helped me! I always thought that there is ONLY ONE TYPE of font for calligraphy, and stress myself out when I write in a different way as compared to my friends. Thank you so much for this video
I LOVE this! Thanks so much for the tutorial. I am making a watercolor for my church with words on it and I had no idea how I was going to do the word part. Thanks to your tutorials, I am going out to buy some water brushes today. Simply beautiful!
By far this is the best brush script tutorial! Thankssssss so so much! I struggle with writing my "r" and "s"....... (well r's in general, even with a ball pen!). Cant wait to practice some more tomorrow. Love your work!
Even though your videos are more digital then pen and paper, I learned so much from this wonderful video. I'm just beginning my adventures in lettering and love all it's aspects! I would like to request that you make more videos like this because they're so helpful for me...and I'm sure for newbies like me too! Oh and I used a dropper to transfer my ink to the water brush pen...still a little messy but a lot easier! Thank You again....Laura!
I cannot even tell you how helpful this was to me. THANK YOU! I love the look of fancy lettering but my hands shake. The guide lines look great to help with that! :)
I know this is a little bit much for me since I'm starting to learn this from scratch but this is really very helpful because of the techniques and points that you stressed and raised. Thank you so much for sharing your talent! ❤️
Thank you, this tutorial I found very helpful. After aatching many other tutorials, this one was the most understanding ad easy to understand. Thank you Teela Cunningham.
I have been practicing for awhile now, and really struggle with B's and S's. I like how you did yours, do you have a video where you just write out the entire alphabet? I also find lowercase a lot easier. Your videos help, so thanks!
I am like Julie and just found you! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent of brush script. I have some lovely brush markers from my lovely departed Mum. She was good at everything she put her hands on. I have done a bit of calligraphy in the past so I am hoping to pick up brush and ink and get busy. You have a great video voice too Teela and I look forward to see what else you show us. thanks again. Sue Victoria, BC
Definitely the best tutorial video ever! Thankyou so much for your help, I am just starting and you have made it even more interesting and fun. Thankyou for sharing your exceptional talent with us and guiding everyone and anyone who appreciates beautiful lettering and calligraphy.
i've always wanted to learn how to do lettering & calligraphy, and i'm so glad i found your video! now i know how i'm gonna practice! thank you so much for this video! :3
+Teresa Kannenberg Thanks! Just a lot of playing around/experimenting and practice - it can be so meditative after awhile it just starts coming naturally :)
Um, what if you want to fill your waterbrush with water again? Can it be completely cleaned or do you have to use another one again? I really reaaaaaally love your works by the way. And your instructions really help when I practice. 💖
Hi! I hope you'll find this, because I really really need an answer. do you think it would work if I use calligraphy ink the same way using watercolour for this? (same way meaning dipping the brush into the calligraphy ink and then adding water to the brush), or will it be messy?
Hey Teela. Can you fill the aqua water brushes with white ink? Do you have any recommendation of good white ink you could use? I've been trying to use white water colour on kraft paper, but can't seem to get an even flow and consistency of paint.
I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to thoroughly got through this beginners guide. and for sharing your skills with us. Its helping boost my confidence that I might just get better at calligraphy. I owe you one!
Love love love your videos!! I've been doing hand lettering and calligraphy for a while and JUST started to play in Photoshop and illustrator. Do you have any videos that talk about digitizing your hand lettering? :)
+TheJlee0608 Yep! This is my latest one on vectorizing - I use these exact processes whenever I digitize lettering: th-cam.com/video/apYRHdA59YU/w-d-xo.html
Hi, I really love your lettering :))). Do you have any problem with the india ink clogging the brush? I have been doing some researches and many comments on the Internet(on wetcanvas) say that waterproof ink such as india or chinese ink dries up and clogs the brush. Thank you :)))
Hi teela! I love your work p! Very very awesome!! I just need to ask you something. After im done using my Waterbrush pen (filled with ink) should i take off the after I finish? Or I can keep the ink in the pen? Thanks soo much for teaching!
Thankyou Teela for this video! ☺ It's really effective! I'm requesting if you can have a video of different fonts used in hand lettering! 😊 Thankyou! 💕
I can't even get the strokes right. I can't go upstroke and make the line thinner. My hand just dosen't apple the right pressure. Besides, my upstrokes are kinda wobbly because my hand always moves. I can't hold the brush still 😂 I need help...
hi. i juat bought a waterbrush yesterday and some Dr. Ph. Martins Hydrus ink. i just wanna ask if i can put it directly in the waterbrush or if i should dilute it first. thank you
it looks soooo easy when you r lettering😍 totalllllyyyyy luv it! i wanna start soon w/ lettering so i can personalice my bujo seems like a load of practice for me... can you recomment any books for lettering? german or english is fine for me either way. thx so far 😊
+quitefranklybb yay! Thanks for checking it out :) If you're new to brushes, I would start with a tombow: amzn.to/1nf11Ev (that's what I started with) before moving onto a waterbrush if you want a slightly cheaper option for easing yourself in. The only downside is, the tombow dries pretty quickly (mine lasted less than a month with regular use) which is why I only use a waterbrush filled with ink now (much more affordable in the long run if you enjoy it).
Is Tombow better than Prismacolor? I feel the tip of the Prismacolor is kind of weak and a little too bendy but, I am a beginner and couldn't find a Tombow. With the Prismacolor, I barely see a difference between the thin and thick stroke. If I lessen the pressure, the thin strokes are shaky. I have a pretty steady hand. Anyway, HELP! I want to get really good at this!
+Holly McCutcheon I really like the tip of the tombow, but switched to a pentel waterbrush filled with ink because the tombow dried out wayyyyy too fast for the cost. Since I use it so much, I've found an ink filled waterbrush to be most cost effective and I love, love the synthetic tip - perfectly bends :)
Hi! I love your vidss! You have a special talent. I just want to ask whats the name of the waterbrush pen you use. What brand is it? I hope you reply. :)) big fan 🤗
question, if you wanted to print your work, how would you fix those little imprefections on the edges of the lettering with a program like illustrator or photoshop to make them smoother with out taking away from the character. I've seen this type of lettering on shirts and the edges are flawless and i know theirs no away the ink is gonna run on paper that perfectly. Anyone know?????
I am a graphic designer who also does brush lettering! To answer your question, first we write out our words with a brush or with a pencil. Then scan them or take a picture of them. From there, they are traced and digitized by hand in a program such as Adobe illustrator. Hope that helps!
First REAL tutorial I've seen yet. All the other ones are just like "and you kinda just write and practice" thanks!
The best waterbrush lettering TH-camr. Clear instructions. You make it look so effortless. The use of guidelines is helpful. Thanks😄

Hi teela! I love your work p! Very very awesome!! I just need to ask you something. After im done using my Waterbrush pen (filled with ink) should i take off the after I finish? Or I can keep the ink in the pen? Thanks soo much for teaching!
Hi teela please reply! I need to know this too!
you would be better off taking the ink out and washing thoroughly, because if you leave the ink in it is likely to clog.
Thankyou Teela for this video! ☺ It's really effective! I'm requesting if you can have a video of different fonts used in hand lettering! 😊 Thankyou! 💕
This was so helpful! Thank you!!
Thanks! That was very helpful!...this is going to be fun!!😊

I can't even get the strokes right. I can't go upstroke and make the line thinner. My hand just dosen't apple the right pressure. Besides, my upstrokes are kinda wobbly because my hand always moves. I can't hold the brush still 😂 I need help...
Try holding the brush differently - more perpendicular to the paper. You can also think about "pulling" instead of "pushing" the tip of the brush
Thanks a million love for sharing this! You are so gifted and talented =)
hi. i juat bought a waterbrush yesterday and some Dr. Ph. Martins Hydrus ink. i just wanna ask if i can put it directly in the waterbrush or if i should dilute it first. thank you

+quitefranklybb yay! +ugo rox (ugo sin ache) thanks for watching!
Hello, which tip sizes are you using for brush lettering?
Fine tip is my fav for waterbrushes, for paintbrushes, I prefer a no. 1 round or a no.4 round :)
That's the most common font for me because that's what I usually see that people use. Still it's beautiful
