When I was a teenager in the mid 70s, a small portion of this railway remained hidden behind the Canberra Technical College. It ran among the trees between the parking area and Amaroo Street. I went to Campbell High and we used to come this way when walking from the school to the Olympic Pool.

It's a massive shame the railway wasn't kept, it would have been amazing for the city nowadays if plans had be realised.
Do you plan on making a video about the abandoned station and sidings at Molonglo? I've always wanted to know what the deal was with there.

Interesting hearing about the lost railways in Canberra. I was not aware of these rail lines. Thanks for sharing.

This is a great video. I think the photo of the timber and ash platform is actually a reverse (mirror) image. The buildings in the background were on Mort St, and the platform was south east of these. I've seen this picture elsewhere the other way around (as if the photographer was looking northwards). I included a wide shot of downtown Canberra in the 1930s on the Canberra Railway Station wiki entry, where the platform is visible just 'outside' the Sydney Building. If we had a southbound pic of the platform, we should see the Sydney building on the right hand side - on the far side of the rail route.

'Rediscovering Lost Railways' Aus style. I like it, nicely done! It's incredible to see so much vacant land and not only did this line vanish but nothing was done for a link through to Yass. I suppose if the population and feasibility was there during they railway's heydays they would've done it.

Thrilled to wake up on Saturday morning to this video. I was obsessed with finding the traces of Canberra's lost railways, back in the days of my Weekend Walks blog, and now I've seen them all, thanks to the Canberra Railway Museum. 🤩

This is an excellent video, very well made. I think there is one small error in it - the construction railway ran closer to or even right next to Amaroo St, not between the trees forming the railway easement. These were planted around the 1940s to safeguard the land where the definitive railway from Kingston through the city and out to Yass was planned to go, but not a single rail was laid.

An interesting video, I certainly didn't know that the railway actually extended past the current station. Thanks for the lesson 😎👍

for someone who has lived here for over 40 years I didn't realise that any of the branch lines to civic still existed.

Part of the Canberra Planners' unfailing obsession with destroying public transport. Because they _don't use it._
ACT Planning has not met a car park it didn't like! Any green space is only temporary until it can be replaced with broken bitumen, weeds and metres.

The ACT Government patrols ACT car parks with vans that automatically capture people's numberplates with the RAPID system, and do them for parking over the time limits

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that you cannot catch a train to Canberra from Melbourne direct in this day and age. That we have to catch connections either by rail or bus via XPT in NSW is a joke!!!!

I think it makes perfect sense. 7+ hours. 1 hour plane. If there was demand it would have never been stopped. End of story. It’s only a city of 400,000 people: how busy would you think it would be when a train from Melbourne to Adelaide (2 million) is half empty and only runs 3 times a week.

Who was going to pay for the “ direct” Melbourne link from Yass to Canberra.

Public transport absolutely sucks in the ACT. The place is a homage to the motor car.

Good history but why oh why do people use ragtime music to conjure up a past age.

So a city that was completely planned and built in the modern era didn’t preserve a railway corridor into the city 🥲 interesting
