And here's me thinking I'd never ever need yet another Big Muff interpretation. I guess I'll want one in some point. Loving their effects already, and now this, lol.

    I bought a Warlow as well, but it's a different one, with a toggle to switch between a Muff tonestack, a Rat-like filter or a combination of both.
    That one seems to have more mids in the Rat filter, and works great on bass/bass VI.

  • @andyblakely7576
    @andyblakely7576 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I own both, and both are great! I really enjoy how thick and brutal the warlow is. The ehx is hard to beat for how it cuts in a mix. But for home solo practice the warlow is sooo much more satisfying. I have the limited Ed rat gfx warlow and it has a toggle on front to switch between op-amp and rat tone stacks. The standard v1 Warlow has the switch internally. I’ve yet to see anyone show off the rat mode in any video. I’m keeping both, because the warlow is incredible and the ehx is still different tonally and cheap. Thanks for the great shootout!

    All the Muff fans out there ought to check out the largely forgotten EHX Germanium 4 " Big Muff " version.
    Besides using four legit diodes( which surprised me, especially given the price; they are the NKT 275" red dot" high gain type, which are more common), and having a cool Tiki design , it's a two sided , Drive & Distortion, with sag/ voltage controls.It's NOT a Muff circuit, nor is it technically a square wave Fuzz, but it can do creamy to sputtery, and has a Treble Booster capacity for darker amps , bass, and general brain drilling.
    Tough to really qualify the sound, - Garage Trash, with a vintage flavor? Like the GeOD , it's one of EHX's forgotten classic's, right down to the crappy footswitches and dollar store knobs.Stacked on a Boost, it can get into Muff territory, but it normally isn't high output. For around $100, it's a crazy deal, a credible Muff option, and a solid platform for mods/ upgrades.
    I'm not a high gain player, but I do have Jptr's Double Jive Reel fixed on my board, and they make great pedals.I plan on it remaining my main Boost/ Drive and early gain stage for a while to come.
    Peace.

    Yeay, finally another big muff demo. Cool stickers and clever marketing, but I'll guarantee that this particular fuzz pedal will not cut through in a live mix with a loud drummer and another guitarist. The fizzy buzzy thing is aweome on its own, and can be mixed into a nice intro riff, but it's also the best way to completely dissapear in a messy live mix.

    • @JPTRFX
      @JPTRFX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @vetzaaak
      @vetzaaak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Far Stox Depends on the particual mix we're talking about though. With a loud drummer with a lot of 4-6 kHz action, and a second guitar that doesn't mute all his treble frequencies eiher...I'd personally prefer an overdrive/dist with more mids and not too much emphasis on neither the lowest or highest frequencies. If there were one size fits all kind of solution for guitar pedals and band mixes, it'd be a pretty boring world I guess :)

    • @vetzaaak
      @vetzaaak ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One year later and I'm about to eat my own words. My ove/hate for the big muff changes every now and than, and I'm now entering a new phase where I'm diving back into the muff rabbit hole and again listening more to the stoner/grunge/shoegaze/etc bands I grew up with, as well as newer bands that play similar stuff. Listened to some more demos of this pedal, mostly of the new version with the filter switch. Turns out this particular demo just doesn't do it for me, but nearly every other one makes me extremely curious to try this pedal out myself.
      So I guess that's the long version of me appoligizing for being a condescending cynical whise-ass one year ago :/
      Cutting through a mix is still always an issue with big muffs imo, but there's plenty of bands to prove that it can be overcome, and that the results are worth the effort of tweaking yer settings and levels a bit.

    I liked more the Warlow, has more of a fuzz character, while the EHX Op-Amp has that boxy/nasal mids that i tend to dislike and sounded to me very much like typical metal high gain distortion, while the Warlow reminded me more to a 60's/70's raspy and brutal heavy psych fuzz, something like Frijid Pink's debut album or Stone Garden.

    The E-H is a OpAmp Fuzz...believe it or not it is more related to a Tube Screamer than any Big Muff made before or after. The JPTR FX pedal is voiced to sound like a classic silicon transistor Muff Fuzz so you will get a scoop thing.If you are simply all about having a classic Muff neither of these are it. Though the JPTR had me fooled. I did not do my homework and check out the site. So the words you are reading are in my way a retraction from the epistle that graced this page only yesterday. THE JPTR IS ABOUT $215.00 USD and the E-H is $90.00 USD Nothing is more Big Muff than the Ram's Head and EH reissue is more than just a passable take on it. You can get it for $100.00 USD. Yes the Ram's Head is 'Dave Gilmour" and the OpAmp is Billy Corgan so they are worlds apart in their intent. My point is you can get a lot of Pro sounding 'Fuzz noises ' for the same budget.

    • @padernia4477
      @padernia4477 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On this theme are a bunch of EHX "Big Muffs" that do not sound like a typical Big Muff. Along with the Op-Amp there is also the Double Muff (I think it actually predates the Rams Head), The Germanium 4 Big Muff, The Big Muff Deluxe, the Metal Muff and more. I have a Germanium 4 Big Muff and I love it but it sounds nothing like a typical Muff. Its got a boost side and a gated fuzz side. The Earthquaker Devices Hoof and Solid Gold FX MkII would also be in this category of un-muffy Muff style pedals.

    Sounds like the feedback network has been set closer to a gating than normal.. So if it was a 100k link in a Fuzz Face to the Fuzz pot replacing with a 68k will give it that style gating.. Essentially the Gate on a Fuzz Factory.. In a Muff style circuit.
    You can hear the wave rolling over itself.. Must be all Op-Amp clipping and just gated and biased for distortion.
    Warlow is super satisfying cranked amp. Natural feeling breakup somehow.

    I have heard this exact sound already,we all have. Just plug any good distortion pedal direct into the board like Reznor did on countless NIN albums. Same fuckin old sound. Doesn't even sound like a good fuzz. More like a too distorted, distortion pedal to me. Not enough bass to be a good muff sound.It only sounded decent when everything was turned low. Nah. This Won't cut the mustard. too noisy and trebly for sabbath, yet not enough bass for the heavy doom I normally create. I'll pass.
