@@WeAsACompany yes. It has many clipping modes, and "your amp and guitar" sounds like your guitar and amp. Some modes even lets you clean up with volume of your guitar. (Black Arts has got a "Op Amp" Muff version called Crown of Horns, but I haven't test it). You could give it a try.
I associate the fuzz war with being a no holds barred gnarly fuzz, and it is, that the Warlow still sounds massive in comparison is crazy. That thing must run on demons.
The warlow is definitely my favorite of the three. I really like the hoof too but I prefer the cloven hoof version. It's just a bit more nasty and aggressive.
Great comparison of three Big Muff clones! Hoof: Green Russian clone and the pedal that launched EQD. Smooth top end and midrange that almost sounds like a blended clean. Fuzz War: Supa Tonebender clone (Ram's Head minus first set of clipping diodes). Tons of attack, volume and freq range. A bit ragged and not as much gain as you'd expect. Warlow: Op Amp clone from Germany. Most balanced frequency-wise. Sludgy, buzzsaw tone with very blended attack. My personal fav from this shootout!
They’re all great! I’ve thought about picking up a Fuzz War; maybe one day… I’ve gigged extensively with my Hoof for a couple years now and I love it. It really cuts though a mix much easier than most muffs. To make it super doomy, I put a low gain rat clone in front of it; Lordy, it’s brutal! Lol Awesome comparison! Cheers!
The “low gain fuzz into hoof” is one reason I ordered a hoof reaper yesterday. Makes it have that almost “clicky” rattle to the lows, and the octave… a free Tentacle! Like when a good anime gets weird.
The Warlow really comes off like a sludge/metal fuzz, while the Fuzz War seems kind of transparent/clear. The Hoof also has a unique midrange presence to it, but does come off boxy on some settings. Might snag a Fuzz War soon!
Amazing! I was looking for a direct comparison between Warlow and Fuzz War, but couldn't find any at all. I just stumbled across this video by chance...!! Thanks for doing this comparison. Too bad you only had the gain all the way up for the most part and there were some volume differences.
They all sound great, I think it's a matter of pairing it with specific guitars/amps/mixes. Slight edge to me for the Fuzz War because the EQ is aggressive but not overly scooped and boomy. Hoof was almost Tonebender-y in that it has a smoother thing happening with less bass and more mids. Warlow sounds the most scooped and aggressive to me, definitely cool for that vibe but I'd struggle to make that work in a mix probably.
god damn that Warlow is crazy! Feel like it's a one trick pony but oh man if you want that sound, that is it 100%! The Fuzz War seemed too bright for my liking and the Hoof wasn't bad but I already got an Orange OR15 that can almost sound that fuzzy just from its pregain drive.. Too amp like imo!
Of these the Warlow is the closest to what I need right now, but the Hoof Reaper gets me there a bit better and the octave up alone into my basic drive (on one side. I have a weird parallel-drive, over-processed setup involving vintage digital rack gear and a line mixer used as matrix mixer. The Warlow has the mids and highs, but the lows aren’t as “rattly” as the Hoof at some settings, especially with the Tone Reaper driving it and what the octave does is mwah. But DANG the Warlow!
Yep, clean channel. It's a RV 100 MKII. With single coils treble are around 7 o'clock, bass around 8 and middle around 10,30 o'clock. With darker picups we increase the bass accordingly. Volume is set to 11 o'clock. Cabinet is a new Orange 4x12 loaded with V30.
@@WeAsACompany I have the RV MKii as well. My clean channel sounds like garbage if I throw any dirt into it. It's getting serviced next week. Maybe there's something up with it.
So guys, which is your favorite "Big Muff style" pedal produced in the last 10 years?
1) Wren and Cuff Box of War
2) Dazatronix Big Fuzz
3) Mojo Hand FX Iron Bell
4) Buffalo FX Ram's Head
5) Green Carrot Pumpkin Pie
Honourable mention: EHX Deluxe Big Muff
@@nickk5948 I got a Nano Triangle for my small board and it sounds as good as my big box Violet Ram's Head
Pharaoh Supreme? 😶
@@algarridm Never played one, seems to be a great sounding pedal.

Love that Fuzz riff. Great choice!
Nice Fuzz riff

Great comparison. The Warlow is really good, but perhaps too sludgy for my tastes. Reminds me a lot of Bleach-era Nirvana. It's hard to beat Fuzz War.
the hoof is so good, so versatile

That Warlow sounds like molten lava.
I have the hoof reaper and the fuzz war. I love both but tend to prefer the fuzz war.
The JPTR Warlow melts the other 2! Surprised as the EQD Hoof was a fave of mine. That Warlow destroys...

What Big Muff would you consider the Fuzz War to be more closely related too?
That’s the thing, it’s not really a big muff. It’s a different fuzz.
Are you going into the clean channel of the RV? I have trouble getting pedals to sound good through the clean on my RV.

Hoof is badly outclassed. Jack of no trades. The Fuzzwar and Warlow have distinct tones that could make a song. Hoof is just another tone.
Warlow is how to disappear from band mix. Hoof just rule em all.
With a fuzz pedal you are the mix. Ain't nobody complaining you can't hear the guitar in Cherub Rock.
more knobs = more like (a lot of the time).
