    If, for the same work, women make only 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, why don’t businesses hire only women? Wages are the biggest expense for most businesses. So, hiring only women would reduce costs by nearly a quarter - and that would go right to the bottom line. Don’t businesses want to be profitable? Or, are they just really bad at math?
    Well, actually, it’s the feminists, celebrities and politicians spreading this wage gap myth who have the math problem.
    Here’s why:
    The 77-cents-on-the-dollar statistic is calculated by dividing the median earnings of all women working full-time by the median earnings of all men working full-time. In other words, if the average income of all men is, say, 40,000 dollars a year, and the average annual income of all women is, say, 30,800 dollars, that would mean that women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. 30,800 divided by 40,000 equals .77.
    But these calculations don’t reveal a gender wage injustice because it doesn’t take into account occupation, position, education or hours worked per week.
    Even a study by the American Association of University Women, a feminist organization, shows that the actual wage gap shrinks to only 6.6 cents when you factor in different choices men and women make. And the key word here is “choice.” The small wage gap that does exist has nothing to do with paying women less, let alone with sexism; it has to do with differences in individual career choices that men and women make.
    In 2009, the U.S. Department of Labor released a paper that examined more than 50 peer-reviewed studies and concluded that the oft-cited 23 percent wage gap “may be almost entirely the result of individual choices being made by both male and female workers.” Well, let’s look at some of those choices.
    Georgetown University compiled a list of the five best-paying college majors, and the percentage of men or women majoring in those fields:
    Number 1 best-paying major: Petroleum Engineering: 87% male
    Number 2: Pharmaceutical Sciences: 48% male
    3: Mathematics and Computer Science: 67% male
    4: Aerospace Engineering: 88% male
    5: Chemical Engineering: 72% male
    Notice that women out-represent men in only one of the five top-paying majors - by only a few percentage points.
    Now consider the same study’s list of the five worst paying college majors:
    Number 1: Counseling and Psychology: 74% female
    Number 2: Early Childhood Education: 97% female
    3: Theology and Religious Vocations: 66% male
    4: Human Services and Community Organization: 81% female
    5: Social Work: 88% female
    Here, it’s the women who lead in all but one category. Even within the same profession, men and women make different career choices that impact how much money they make. Take nursing, where male nurses on the whole earn 18% more than female nurses. The reason? Male nurses gravitate to the best-paying nursing specialties, they work longer hours, and disproportionately find jobs in cities with the highest compensation.

Be sure to be part of a minority too; it will be easier for you to get free healthcare, free food and free state accomodation on top of your poverty benefit, family allowance, housing vouchers and maternity benefit.

    I'm a Registered Nurse and a man. I make more than almost all of my female RN coworkers. Why? My bosses are women. It's because 1) I never call in sick 2) I constantly work as charge nurse (extra pay) 3) I work full time 4) I work overtime 5) I'm willing to work nights (extra pay) 6) I don't take a year off when I have kids. It's not rocket science.

      big reason why men are usually more available to be on-call and are 'willing' to work more is that oftentimes their wives (who probably also have jobs too) have a second job where they take care of most of the house hold chores and the responsibilities with their kids. I know not all house holds are like this but these gender roles are are prevalent in our society. The problem is that raising kids and cooking and cleaning while maintaining a job should be seen as a responsibility of both genders - when both parties pull their weight in the relationship is when both can also equally provide just has much time and energy to their work life and therefore closing that wage gap. A woman shouldn't have to choose between being a good mom and advancing her career when often this is not the case for a man because if a man gives more time and effort to a job instead of his family he's seen as a good provider not a bad father.

To give a more accurate picture, the study should also examine gender bias in promotion and how Google determines the employment level an employee is assigned. The study was limited to a specific type of pay equity and does not take into account other factors like leveling, which considers whether new employees are paid appropriately at the outset of their career at the company.

      Being against the law doesn't always prevent things from happening. What she didn't talk about is why care work is paid so low. Women make choices to go there because of various reasons (society expectations, how you were raised, interest, etc.) It is a fact that the jobs women were meant to do in the past are paid less. Society expects men to take the extra hours and act as the breadwinner, and for women to support the children. There is still some stigma if the woman takes overtime and the dad stays at home. Even without overt stigma, there is a general expectation that couples will divide labour that way, and expectations guide our thinking and choices. So there are pressures behind these choices.
      Also know that women leave a different impressions than men, even if they act in the exact same way. So much of career advancement is making people see you as a "fit" for the role. If you want to command respect, people tend to see men as more authoritative automatically. Plus because the top-paying fields are male-dominated, it can be harder to fit in - and career depends on making your superiors and friends see you as "one of the gang." It doesn't help that the social culture in high-paying business environments tends to focus on sports, attractive women, and alcohol - focused on what seems like a parody of young masculine interests.

      Communism never works. Lets say a professors class argues for communism. So he started grading them according to communism, taking the average score of the entire class and giving it to everyone. So if Sally got a 10 and jill got a 5, while jack got a 7. The whole class would be given a 7. Eventually the Sallies of the class decided it was unfair that they work hard and study to get a 10, while the Jills just sat on their asses and passed because of Sallies work. The Sallies decided to become Jills, soon to be followed by the jacks and eventually the entire classes average dropped to a 5 because nobody was studying under the expectation that someone else would score high and the whole class was failed.

      - women are more likely to take sick leaves, compared to men;

      @@robertd9850 You are right that women earn a negligible amount less in the same position as men (about 1% [1]). It was silly of me to assert otherwise since I know for a fact that almost all of the pay gap occurs due to more structural (less obvious) discrimination that affects women's choice of career, the hours they can work in that career, the likelihood of asking for a raise and other barriers.
      You are certainly correct in your assertion.

      So I'm a woman engineer, and I'm in an interesting situation where my husband is also an engineer, we graduated from the same college in the same year with the same degree, and started working at the same company, so we get to compare salaries. We've had roughly the same salary since we've started (give or take a couple hundred). It seems like it's the child-bearing age that really starts the divide since the woman is expected to give up her work for a bit. We'll see where our salaries end up 10yrs from now!

    In Australia we have the (tax payer funded) Workplace Gender Equality Agency. On two separate parliament hearings, they were proud to announce that their statistics did not account for differences in:
    - Hours worked.
    - Professions chosen.
    - Industry sectors chosen.
    - Seniority/performance for the same job.
    - Maternity leave.
    They also admitted that they did not compare whether men and women were paid the same for the same job (given its illegal to pay men and women differently).
    When this was pointed out, their explanation was that this is not how the "gender paygap" is assessed internationally (or by their own standards), and that by simply summing up all male and female pays and dividing it by the median, this was how you would determine the "gender paygap", despite its flaws. When it was called out, they just did not seem to understand how this was a blatant miss-use of data and statistics because they were following an "international model" (which is clearly developed that way to arrive at the conclusion they want). Not to mention that if they did compare it fairly, their own agency (jobs) would cease to exist.
    Also worth mentioning that the WGEA argue for the importance of "Diversity" while their own employees are made up of 80% 40+ white women, and only 20% males.

    The issue is not that women are paid less, it's that we value traditionally "masculine" jobs more than "feminine" ones. Teachers, nurses, and caretakers are seen as less valuable than engineers, scientists, and other "masculine" careers. Ultimately, both women and men should have the freedom to choose a career without having to think of preserving their masculinity or femininty. We need both men and women in teaching. We need both men and women in engineering. We need both men and women in the military. We just have to work together.

      Agreed. The 'wage gap' is not a problem that can be solved through legislation or by any individual company's hiring practices, it's a social issue. Until society values social services and is willing to pay the taxes to support higher salaries for teachers and social workers and counselors, there will be no change. And the video didn't even touch on things why men have the freedom to work long hours and be on call, which is frequently because they have a wife at home taking care of house and family. She sacrifices her career for his. Sure, that's still a choice, but it's a choice which is often made because it is easier and more socially acceptable for women to take on that role.

      @Vladimir Rusev I don't know how to tell you this, but a lot of women actually want to work in science or the military. It's not a crazy concept.

    I don't want to sound sexist. but yes there is no wage gap. There is a gap in performance, however. you can't expect to make a ton of money when you barely show up to work, and even when you do, do a shitty job at work. also, it sometimes depends on WHERE you work. You can't expect to work as a cashier at McDonalds and make 60,000 a year. that's just my side of the argument.

      William Everman there is a wage gap, but just how much of a wage gap is unclear at this time. But it does exist and the good news is it's shrinking steadily.

      Takashi just like minorities who don't actually want racism to end entirely because it's easier to blame white people for everything & prey on their guilt.
      Disclaimer: i am not saying all minorities think this way. i'm only referring to the ones that do. And i'm tired of getting painted as a villain in my own country for something i never did! when did white christians become enemy #1? 😞

    "But, muh wage gap-"
    The wage gap is simply the average earnings of men and women working full time. It does not count for different job positions, hours worked or different jobs. It has nothing to do with the same job. It has nothing to do with discrimination.

    1:19 "Actual wage gap shrinks to only 6.6 cents when you factor in different choices men and women make."
    1:27 "The small wage gap that does exist has to do with differences in individual career choices."
    BUT THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THE STUDY ACCOUNTED FOR!!!

    • @Sid_2007
      @Sid_2007 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it didn't. The study doesn't account for primary career choices for women against men. It accounts for the variables between men and women that involves them both in any specific career to see if there is an actual wage gap ie in the medical sector if you compare a specific type of male doctor against that of a female doctor doing the same job. Once all these have been factored, the remaining difference is purely based upon PRIMARY career choices by women and the income potential to that of men. eg women choosing to become nurses whereby men primarily becoming dcotors.

    • @Richard_is_cool
      @Richard_is_cool 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sid_2007 Fine, so there's a second study showing that the wage gap shrinks further? That's great, but why don't we get to see it? It does seem like the second argument is still based on the first study - that study didn't account for primary career choices, but when factoring all other things, wage gap shrunk to 6.6%. Therefore, surely, if we factor primary career choices, it will go to 0%. That's the argument, if I'm being benevolent. But that's not a good argument, because it lacks that second study.

      @@Richard_is_cool The false statistic is due to many differences between the genders, not just the primary one shown in this video. I choose to believe that the rest is accounted for or almost all accounted for by the difference in how often women will ask for raises compared to men (which is ~7% less in most studies), due to men being more genetically aggressive - thus making them more assertive.
