Something I found out later in life, is that many vampire myths include some strange obsessive/compulsive need to count or order things. Like, if your being chased by a vampire throw some grain, they'll have to stop and count them; or thow a rope full of knots in a vampire's coffin and when they awake they won't go out and feed as they spend the whole night undoing the knots.
When I found that out, I always wondered if The Count was a nod to those myths or just an adorable coincidence?

Zurt ...thus the point in Richard Matheson's "The Night Stalker" 1971/72. Kolchak murders the serial killer with a stake just as the Sheriff arrives. They use that as an excuse to run him out of town, by getting a judge to draw up an arrest warrant...even though an FBI agent helped defeat the vampire and aided on the ritual staking.

My favourite version of the vampire has to be the predatory vampires from Steve Niles' 30 Days of Night series. Unlike virtually every vampire story from good ol' Dracula to Twilight's sparkly vampires, it's the only one I can think of (other than The Strain's strigoi) where the vampires are depicted not as seducers/seductresses but more as a distinct species of human that see humans as food and nothing else, just like a real predator-prey relationship. In Niles' own words "what if they don't want to seduce you; what if you're just a resource to them?"

True Blood and the original books. The Parasol Protectorate Vampires. The Buffyverse, especially Angel & Spike. Blade. Lestat from Anne Rice and Alucard from the Hellsing anime. What We Do In The Shadows and Gary Oldman's Dracula. And for sheer fun, Bunnicula & the Count from Sesame Street

Ohhhhhh man favorite vampire!!!! So hard to pick one.
I'll always have a particular soft spot in my heart for the original Count. That said...
One of my favorite versions is Fred Saberhagen's Thorn. He's incredibly intelligent, for one thing, which I always love in a character...and it doesn't hurt that the first Thorn novel I read involved his crossing paths with Sherlock Holmes!
Another would be Nancy Collins' Sonja Blue. She's a real bad-ass and one of the first times I encountered a female vampire who was far more complex than "seduce men and devour them." She's terrifying, terrible, and gloriously dark; things happen around her and to her that would shatter a lesser being. VERY powerful stuff for a teenager wanting to believe that it's possible to fight against the world!
I think what makes vampires so compelling for me - the ones I like best at least - is the dichotomy between a sort of cold attitude - a nobleman deigning to walk among the peasantry, or maybe just a person who KNOWS he is a monster and that he can't ever make friends of the creatures that are constantly at risk of becoming prey - if not his prey, then another's. And yet, there IS emotion beneath that aloof exterior. Thorn, and Sonja Blue as well, they're both incredibly lonely. There are no others quite like them, and they know how unique they are. They also know they are exceptional - but it's a very lonely thing to be at the top, with no friends. And yet, BECAUSE they do care, they don't dare let anyone close. It's a dynamic that sucks me in almost every time...which is why I've read a LOT of vampire books!

Bram Stoker took alot of his inspiration from the historical Irish Vampire. Abhartach. He was a chieftain who demanded blood from his people and even hunted his people. Every time he was killed he came back. He's technically immortal. He was buried upside down and a massive stone and blackthorns were planted around his grave. I won't say where he's buried as by Irish law it's illegal to remove the stone on his grave so I don't want anyone trying to let him out. We've many other folklore Vaimpír like An dearg Dua and many others. But Abhartach is definitely the most feared
