i'm not usually scared of heights, but when i'm at the top of a climb and looking down, the distance makes me anxious and terrified of receiving an injury. I'll continue practicing the falls, thank you so much!!
Just had my first bad fall and landed on my back and now I have a concussion. I've only been climbing for about 3 months. So, to any other newer climbers, I know sometimes people are trying to be encouraging but if a move doesn't feel right, listen to your instincts and don't do it. It's not worth the risk. Next time I'm back on the wall I'll be sure to practice falling properly. Just bc there is a fall mat it doesnt mean you can't get hurt. Learning to fall safely should come first. Thanks for the video.
Same happened to me, fell uncontrolled on my back from 3 meters and smacked my head right on the mat 🥲 Damn that was one of the first times I actually really fell. And it scared the shit out of me and now I’m always a bit shaky when starting my sessions. It relaxes more when I’m done with the warm up but it’s still a little scary
@thebadgerstick9492 I'm so sorry to hear about your fall. I hope you are okay now. And totally, it's really scary/traumatic-my recovery was 4 months. When I started climbing again, I had so much anxiety. I stuck to really easy routes, focused on feeling safe and used to heights again... I also climb down now as much as possible. And I practice falling. If I dont see a safe way down, I dont try it... and I listen to my body and instincts over everything else. It actually made me a much better climber than before, too. I only get anxious now when I'm not listening to my body or trying to force a move. Just trust yourself and follow whatever your instincts/impulses are trying to tell you. It gets better the more you climb (assuming you love climbing still, lol).
Hope you recovered quickly lovely! Sounds similar to what I did Saturday just gone…it’s bloody horrible! Hospital don’t think I’m concussed but my head’s been swimming for days and I just feel generally ick
Reading all the comments here made me really appreciate our local bouldering gym for giving out safety briefings for first timers! Thanks for the vid!!
See and I thought falling on your back was probably the best bet so I'm really glad you made this video. I'm terrified of heights and using indoor climbing to try to overcome my fear
Take it from someone who’s done it (not willingly 😅) falling on your back sucks! It causes a horrible jarring motion up your spine and through your frame - imagine hitting ice in one spot with a hammer and seeing the cracks splay out from that one pressure point - now imagine that ice being your back and neck absorbing the shock. Mats can be literal life savers but unfortunately we can still get a bit of a scrambling 😅
I am a complete beginner, only gone bouldering about 4/5 times. I fell off today from the very top which should have been scary but it was actually really fun feeling myself fall through the air for so long. Luckily I naturally landed with both feet then tipped onto back like the first clip, but I’m defo going to practice falling for the future
I had a blood clot in my spine that paralyzed me. I worked to get all my mobility back but still deal with pain managment. I started climbing to replace Jiu jitsu and man, I’m super scared to fall bouldering. I usually just do auto belays or top rope with a partner but it’s gets old. I’ve been slowly working bouldering problems but not finishing them. I will quit halfway and practice falling. I hope to one day get over the fear and build my durability back up to before my accident. I know for a fact I can be a strong climber but I have mitigate risk a little more stringently now. Thanks for the tips!
I’m glad to hear that you found this video useful. I’m sorry to learn about your blood clot. Take it one step at a time and don’t do anything that doesn’t feel fun at first until you build tons of milage and confidence in your movement👌
Thank you! This is indeed a very important video. I'm new to bouldering but I have done martial arts and know you are very right about falling correctly.
I'm afraid of heights, but I love bouldering. I just started and I've been projecting this climb for the past week and I was so close to the end but my hands slipped and I scraped up my arm as a result. That was my wake up to learn how to properly fall, I don't want to hurt myself more 😅
I will do anything to avoid the chest land, I got surgery on my stomach and there’s something there. If I landed on my chest like that, for sure I will feel some pain. Thanks for these tips!
I feel like everyone should watch a video like this and learn about fall safety before bouldering. I am watching this video just after falling from the top of a bouldering problem at my local gym. I had to do a mini dyno at the top of the wall, got the highest hand hold, but then I didn’t have great feet holds, I hung for a second, and then i fell down on both feet with a little twist in my left knee upon impact. It happened quickly, and I should have prepared for the possibility of falling as I was doing this pretty challenging problem so I would have been prepared to bend my knees and roll back. As it is, my knees is swollen, and I may have damaged my lateral collateral ligament, which sucks. I know how to top rope. I know my knots. I check my knots and my harness and belay device whenever I climb, but I really should have done more bouldering fall-safety practice and training before pushing myself on the bouldering walls at the end of my climbing session today. So please everyone, watch some videos like this on falling safety, practice it, and keep it in mind as you boulder- especially once you start pushing yourself and attempting problems with smoother and harder holds.
Same for me. One time I was 1 away from finishing about 80% of the routes I tried that day. It was disappointing. The one time i pushed myself , i fell
Very useful tips and great video! I normally try not to jump from the top but sometimes it's kind of hard when I have no more stamina and want to let go of a hold 😩
When falling backwards, dont forget to tuck in your chin. You can fall back controlled (feet butt then back). But make sure you tuck that chin a bit or your head can swing back pretty fast and hit the matt. It can give you a bad headache, or worse mild concussion!
I tried an awkward 6b-type route today and fell pretty hard from quite high and I'm only 5ft 3 so I managed to injure my ankle 😅 not sure how long to rest it but definitely need to practice the safer falls. I always find my worst more dangerous falls are the ones I am expecting (I.e. I've gotten to the top and there's nowhere left to hang/place my foot so i have to drop from a height). I think I tense up a bit and in todays incident I tried to roll back but I did it too late and lots of the pressure of falling went to my ankles 😑 I was only at the climbing wall for 20mins and had to leave. The only think I dislike about bouldering are those really high falls with an overhang

I fell from the same height several times that day, but this fall was bad actually because I tried to climb back down without enough stamina. I took a nasty fall yesterday where I swung off the hold(one arm swing to catch another hold) and flew off landing on my shoulder and arm/wrist. I had what felt like no time to react, is there a way I should try to correct myself or are falls like this inevitable?
Some falls are inevitable, however, I would say that if you have enough time to plan your fall sideways, try to embrace the momentum and roll to the side.

I dislocated my elbow falling sideways doing a dyno in 3 m height, well no other choice than doing a dyno if you are 1,60m (5,3) to get that hold. At 1:21 i hoped you show what to do if you cant land with your feet first. So what to do sideways :S? I got the hold with one hand but not with the other so i rotated and fell sideways.
I’m sorry I didn’t cover this in the video. It’s tricky if you can’t land with your feet first as having a really little reaction time already compromises what you can do to avoid getting hurt. I guess you can practice falling in different ways and learn how to do it when you can’t land on your feet first. Experimenting with this though can be dangerous so please make sure that you go one step at a time. There’s no guarantee that you won’t ever get hurt while climbing. I hope my reply helps.
The mats don’t remove the risk of injury/death entirely. You can potentially hurt yourself badly if you land really poorly or on top of a hazard i.e. someone else. However, I would say that the chances of someone dying are really low.
Why dont pros fall like this ? Whether it's competition or training, they always jump from the top and land their feet. They land fine, but i dont see why they'd risk their knees like this as you're saying in the video

I guess you can practice falling in different ways and learn how to do it when you can’t land on your feet first. Experimenting with this though can be dangerous so please make sure that you go one step at a time. There’s no guarantee that you won’t ever get hurt while climbing.
I hope my reply helps.
But like what happens if you fall from the very top? Do you die? Lmak
The mats don’t remove the risk of injury/death entirely. You can potentially hurt yourself badly if you land really poorly or on top of a hazard i.e. someone else.
However, I would say that the chances of someone dying are really low.
also never land on just one of your arms
Why dont pros fall like this ? Whether it's competition or training, they always jump from the top and land their feet. They land fine, but i dont see why they'd risk their knees like this as you're saying in the video
@@MrKoornex because they have a better understanding of movement and what their body can afford when a fall occurs, not to mention their athletic capabilities to absorb falls on their legs.
This video is intended to serve as mere advise on how to fall for people who are starting out in the sport.
don't keep your knees together, you can knock your face
