- Alex heads to Central Rock Gym Cambridge and Watertown to talk to the setters and coaches on how to fall when bouldering. You get the bouldering falls insights from the people who do it everyday!
We also have a Bouldering Safety video: • Video

This video is really bad and doesn't teach you the correct forms other than the standard crossed arm, slight neck tuck, land on heels and roll back. Most of the people falling in this video land on their feet and lean forward like the guy in the maroon shirt. If you make a safety video it should be taken seriously. There's a better video produced 4 years ago by the guy at raw adventure solutions who explains how to fall from every position and height as well as how to spot people safely.
My bouldering buddy fell and dislocated her elbow yesterday, so I've been watching proper falling technique videos all day.
How exactly does that happen
Happened to me as well. I felt from top since my hands got tired, I landed on my feet with a forwardin force of falling on the face, so I just used my hands from falling forward, the problem was that my hands was too straight and my both elbows got popes, it was hurt so much, It's been two weeks and I still have pains, no broken bones though 😔
I see this video but it doesn't really show you how to fall, they scare to fall from the top and the look down like they have the to plan their falling. In reality you are not choosing to fall, you slip or getting tired and you body can be on a dangerous position. I think that next time the most important thing is the cross your hands towards the chest no matter if you are falling aside or on the back, or forward. It will make your body ready for getting a hit. If you land on this feet do the same thing until you are down, forward or backward. Your face won't get hurt by that since most of the weight is already moved to the ground, and when you continue the walling in lying you are spreading to the whole body
same happened to me yesterday, i had an ankle injury too from bouldering. i dont understand, how those things happen to me but nobdy i boulder with gets injured ever! what am i doing wrong?!
I fell at this gym and am still in recovery two and half years later my leg snapped like a Kit Kat bar
I am by no means an expert but I think you missed out a few key things here (or i am wrong). When falling, always get your momentum moving away from the wall. My friend used to constantly follow these tips, but rolled back toward the wall. A good way to avoid this is to fall with your feet facing the wall, and buckle your knees backward.
Another tip I would give is: when you start to fall, you will usually still have one hand/foot in contact with the wall. Use that limb to push yourself slightly away from the wall.
Thank you so much for this. I needed to learn to fall correctly and this video has showed me the way
Hey guys, love the video! I’d been climbing in a gym for two years, almost entirely bouldering, when I decided to start trying outdoors and on my fourth outdoor climb (second outdoor bouldering) fell and shattered the bones in my left leg. Luckily with some incredible surgeons and after two successful surgeries it was restored pretty well and I kept my leg. Tomorrow is my first climbing session since the injury and I’ve been terrified because I still can’t pinpoint what went wrong last time. This is a huge help because it’s bringing back the memories of the hundreds of successful falls I had in the gym and it also helped me realise that I’m more scared of the height aspect than the climbing aspect so I think I’ll just try traverse climbs or the beginning moves of any climb (ideally anything that doesn’t get me too far off the ground) - at least until I’m comfortable and confident again.
Again, thank you so much. Basic safety measures are so important for beginners, intermediate and advanced climbers and I feel as though everyone can learn something from this. Thank you again
That’s crazy!
Are you back to climbing after all this time?
Dismounted from a wall poorly a couple months ago and landed on my right ankle, sprained it pretty bad. Finally got back to climbing, and then just yesterday I did the exact same thing after missing a Dyno, this time with my LEFT ankle, and I sprained AND fractured it. So anyways, here I am learning how to fall for when I can finally get on a wall again
Two weeks ago I fell down a slab and my feet slammed into every hold and volume available. I ended up fracturing my foot and ankle, so I guess lesson learned- Dont fall down the wall, fall away.
Yeah, I need to put these into practice when I can maybe get my boot off in a week due to not knowing the correct way of landing. Sprained my left ankle as a result of basically miscalculation from a 10 foot fall or so.
Thank you for the tips. I'm scared of heights and the fear of falling often prevents me from making the last move on a bouldering wall, especially if it involves a lunge. I have fallen badly a couple of times through either being sideways or falling on straight legs by accident. I guess I will try practising my falling while lower down on the wall.
Do you have any tips on falling while heel hooking? I can't bring myself to try it as I'm afraid to fall on my neck.
That's definitely a valid concern. We recommend always heel hooking in a way where you can pop your foot off easily. If there is a deep cavity where you can heel hook, we'd recommend not putting your foot inside it; instead try putting your foot on the edge so your foot can pop off easily. Hope this helps!
I watching this the day AFTER bouldering for the first time, also after I had to fall and ended up kneeing myself in jaw, it still hurts
I didn't come to this video because I'm cautious. I came because I learned the importance of safe falls the hard way.
I was scared of falling when I was a n00b and then made it worse breaking my ankle and being on crutches for a hot min and out of climbing for 3 mo! It was from a FOOT SLIP on an easy route. I still have those to this day, but have not broken anything since. HOWEVER I still find myself bailing on problems I would MURDER with a rope on. It's so weird. Lead falls don't scare me the way bouldering falls do. If I take a lead fall, I'm gonna get caught, so I just extend my legs and wait for being caught.
Bouldering, however, I have injury in the back of my mind at all times (except maybe on easier climbs where I'm maybe more at risk for injury. So it's like I have 'rational fear' trapped in my mind when I boulder, which is a bummer because I loved it so much right away.
It was a sideways footslip higher up the wall, which I no longer commit to on hard routes. Tips? Also I heard hard mats are safer, but I'm more afraid of them for some reason. My ankle injury was on a soft mat. I feel like i would get injured more on a hard than soft mat. Is it true that hard mats are less injury prone?
Sprained my ankle bouldering today, so gonna brush back up on how to fall lmao
I still get the fear falling on the top of a slab. The idea that I might just fall straight down the wall, hitting everything on the way down, possibly causing a spin. Does anyone have any advice for that type of fall?
Push off the wall a little with a hand to keep from getting scraped by the holds. I think of it as the "protect my glasses!" reflex. :D
This has happened to me many times. Instinctively I kick away from the wall in the fall. Sometimes my feet or legs hit a hold or the wall but it's never been bad.
@@zoachim I've gotten much more comfortable since posting this 2 months ago. Interestingly, I gained confidence from a bad fall. I lost my left foot as moved my left hand, and my instincts kicked in. I pushed off with my right hand, and leg. I landed on my ass, with my arms in. I did bruise my left shin on a nearby jug, but that can't really be avoided. That's about the worst case scenario, for me and it really wasn't that bad.
@@lukeytron Right!? That's what I'm talking about mate.
How to fall on a heel hook? Bc when you fall with your feet stuck and hands get off the wall before feet, it’s kind of hard to fall safely with feet landing as you described in the video
Maybe aim to roll onto your side?
Haha reading all the comments makes me feel a little better. I’ve always known how to fall correctly and even practiced for precaution when I started climbing during my session but when you slip you really just forget everything. I fell right on my feet with no rolling back and my back hurt so bad to move hoping it goes away soon I need to jsut practice falling
Good shit CRG. I like the one in Syracuse.
my knee hurts from bouldering, I always thought I was good at falling. apparently not if I'm feeling like this, no damage yet, but if I continue falling on my feet I won't be able to climb for long and that doesn't sit right with me. but now I almost dont even want to risk falling on my feet anymore, or is that equally as dangerous ?
The worst fall I had was I was climbing a wall and I miss my grab thank God I turned myself facing forward or else I would have smacked my face into the wall but I hit the back of my calf and had a huge bruise on it it hurt
This is a great video for people. I see so many people fall incorrectly.
Like a judo fall?
so... they say do not land on your legs only because its where knee and hips injury happens and then all the guys jump off the wall on two feet LOL there are no real landing techniques in this vid tbh...
Well I knew how to fall, but still, a bad fall happened and my ankle broke... it is still a dangerous sport with some chances of injuries even when you know the techniques.
Just this weekend went bouldering. Our gym has a bench in the middle, actually enough away from the wall but OMG this guy fell and hit his head on the bench! He was kind funny after, we asked how he is, if he wants help. Said no. Stupid guy climbed again a few minutes later. Sure he had a slight concussion.
hello... what about your head?
Always tuck your head in don't allow it to flick back
you can also Brace your forearms in front of your head wonder woman style if you're worried about something hitting you but this does damage your arms so use it with caution
what if you fall on hard ground?
Employee free running tactics
falling from short distances land on your feet slowing your dissent by going into a crouch balancing a little bit with your hands do not brace the fall with your hands
falling from much higher heights land again on your feet bending your knees but this time roll forward tucking in your head with a slight sideways motion going from one shoulder to the opposite hip arriving again at your feet again using your hands a little bit but not bracing with them
Don't watch this video, especially if you are a "do as I do" kind of person. I'm not an expert climbing but I've already seen better videos.
The verbal advice they give is not so bad (even though it's contradicted with the "don't land on your legs" part), but in many clips they demo a completely wrong technique.
Honestly, it would be better if they deleted this video.
Man, they didnt make his interviews easy...haha
Ah just realized. No one gives a shot about my opinion.
5 min in and all I learned was to cross arms
Ale ale..
