In addition to that, I think there’s nothing wrong with that unless you’re imposing your views into others and or shame others for their beliefs.
It's true, but conversely don't forget that it's also okay to be right. By all means expose yourself to and truly analyze controverting arguments and evidence, and allow yourself the possibility of changing your mind about something. But for so long as analysis of those opposing arguments fails to change your thinking, be okay with that!

@@Lee-jc1ob I wouldn't say no external proof as individuals who are perceptive, expressive, and/or in tune with their spiritual side can see what believers call signs or omens. Furthermore, believing is about unique and careful perception. How many artists/people in general do you notice saying, "give me a sign" or "give me something I can see"? God helps you love yourself by having faith, because the world will not provide it and dances to a tune foreign of His holiness. Fear cripples love and faith, and fear/negativity runs the world. So, ultimately, The only place you will find that faith, or rather, love, is within.
For a fact we do think for ourselves , the problem lies in what we think about . When we hear someones idea , we blindly adopt those ideas either because they are reputable or the things they say align with your beliefs and values , but we do think and that's why we adopted those ideas . What we should do is start questioning those ideas before adopting it and find flaws in our believes and values which will help us think the right way . Questioning ourselves is the best way to find and reinvent ourselves. (Btw this channel is an absolute gem stone and I'm very grateful for the algorithm that led me to you)
I agree. Unfortunately so many people call themselves "freethinkers" and then what they do is completely different: they spew out whatever conspiracy they've heard.

I agree with this.. However, there is no "right way" of thinking. It’s all perspective. There is no one universal way of thinking correctly or incorrectly. When something is "flawed" it’s simply us perceiving it that way. It all comes back to your moral compass, what you’ve absorbed and what you perceive as "perfection". Nothing is absolute. I’m positive or negative connotation.
I just turned 18 today and have grown up using TH-cam, Instagram, and Snapchat since the beginning. What you’re talking about is scarily true. Kids I talk to have become closed minded due to them watching repeated videos or posts solidifying their beliefs about topics. I hope many come across your video to be informed of what’s going on. There’s something important I’ll add for other free thinkers. The algorithm is not all bad, if you cut down on screen time to be productive in your day and then use your “youtube” time wisely to truly learn new things you can engineer the algorithm to work for you in an astounding way. My recommendations have changed from guys playing video games to videos of world renowned scientists sharing their ideas or videos about study habits to help me through college that I’ll be starting next year. If used correctly the internet is a blessing, if misused it can leave us in not the greatest place. I wish good luck to all the young people like me growing up in this era!!
This videos and it's comments have been a great thing in these last 30 minutes, I see so much potential in TH-cam now - something that a couple of mins ago I thought to be no more than a damaging app by addiction - but now it's like that feeling that everything can be good for you if you use it the right way, it's hard but nothing guarantees 100% that you won't get a proper answer for your own progress, even less should you let the crowd have a call on that matter, others can't make a formula for your life. I find the last as an inspiring philosophy for when you think you're being in a crisis... a crisis is a relative state in most cases, for a rich person, an average life might be depressing, but the poor would be more than happy with it, both have opportunities to change to a better situation if they know how to
That mindset is at least worth trying out, paired with acknowledging that there are basic necessities such as food and a place to live at that you have to fight for, life is full of duties but you decide how that's going to affect you emotionally
It's true, the internet is amazing at hyper educating younger people. I'm 33 and I see 10 year olds commenting on youtube with such articulate responses, blows my mind...the 10 year olds I grew up with could barely write a sentence. I'm personally so thankful for the internet while growing up, I learned 99% of everything I know from the internet. I grew up alongside it and I was always using google and researching everything. I was part of a small minority of people worldwide with a computer and internet connection back in the day, but even then there was tons of info online. Nowadays you kids have computers in your pockets, I wish I had that when I was around 12, I had a tiny little bulky TV (not flat screen either) in my bedroom and that's all I had, the computer was downstairs with dial up. I spent all summer staying up all night watching different channels on my little TV... damn if I had the internet, I might have learned a lot and could have answered so many questions that went through my mind.

@@dreamrabbits5072 completely agree, I first realized this when I was learning to play the guitar. As I was teaching myself and watching videos on how to play songs I came across a comment. He said that he wishes he had these step by step videos as a kid to learn the guitar and that he’d be a rockstar if it were available to him. Definitely opened my eyes to how much we can use the internet to our advantage to as you said; hyper educate.

I’ve actually been going down the rabbit hole lately with this. Revisiting old music and movies I liked when I was young and I realized most of my later ideas all came from back then. I was being molded by the eighties. It was kind of freaky. My ideas of what a girl and guy is, what love is and who I am mostly was influenced by my tastes in what I saw. It reminds me how most art is never original, it’s all a bit of taking from someone else and making it your own…

Cancel culture became popular because of free speech, and yet when we try to remove free speech via cancelling people, it makes things worst.
Why? Because you're using an idea to replace another idea that built it in the first place.
You can't put a wooden wall to replace a concrete foundation and then expect it to be the same as before or better than before.
It will just collapse.

The ways we think is all purely shaped by our experiences. To some degree, we do think for ourselves already. But we parrot words, phrases, and tell stories about the experiences we have. No matter how true or deceiving the experience was. There's no escaping it.
I'm proud of myself ! I learnt to think for myself when I was just 15. I realized that a lot of people whole lot of people around me dont think for themselves. My parents as well sadly. And it's so ridiculous !
If you're convincing and perceptive enough you might be able to help those around you, little seeds of doubt week after week, a word, a sentence and they just might happen to change their minds.
But maybe try not to break down their worldview in the process.

@@reddapple8334 still learning myself but I can only imagine it’s all about keeping yourself in mind and what you want, whilst also keeping an open mind to other perspectives and to possibly put both views together but not letting them influence your original idea too heavily, but then again I’m still learning myself

I think now's the generation that can truly understand what they want and what's best for themselves. Instead of being limited to what our family and friends say, it's a time where we can finally seek out the truth.
We just need to get out of that shell is find what it is that supports us, and the world.

Not to be contrarian, but if everyone's IQ "went up by 1 point" we would all actually have the same IQ as before. The intelligence quotient is based on the average person's IQ being 100... how far you are from that average determines how more or less intelligent you are than the average. If people get smarter or dumber generally, the IQ score remains the same its just whatever that new average is, is 100. lol dont hate me, I just found it interesting haha

i find this really interesting and have never really thought about this, but this video made me realise that a unique way of teaching my science teacher uses indirectly teaches me and my classmages to think for ourselves.
he encourages us to find proof not only for what were told, but Against. he used an older idea that youre fooling yourself if you dont try to prove yourself wrong before believing youre right. im glad hes teaching us this way to think like this, because i certainly think ive improved at thinking for myself since taking the class.

My physics teacher wants us to prove formulas (when we can) instead of just writing it because we know it by heart. It teaches us to understand the formula, it makes sense, and since we understand it, we can use it properly

The irony of this video is that people will agree with it without thinking for themselves.
They already thought about it before. Why do it again? Not everything is confirmation bias because some things you have already verified thousands of times over your lifetime. And I didn't really click on this video because of the title. It's because of the channel that I've been subscibed to for years now.

I have an easily changed perception of something. When someone said A, I'll think that thing is A, and so on. But I use this to combine as many perceptions as possible to create my new own perception, so I'm a little bit proud of that. And as always, thank you for making this video!

"Thinking for yourself" is perfectly described as 'introverted thinking' by Carl Jung in his cognitive functions theory. The fact I'm relying on him is kinda ironic tho.
I've always wondered at how members of a group operate. The pains of growing up ostracized from society from a young age has always made me feel the outsider looking in when observing the patterns of behavior of others. Even being outside the norm most of my life I find myself doublethinking as to maintain the social persona I've had to create for myself to work in the real world.
So now I'm wondering, is what I've experienced the norm? And if that is the case, how in the heck do others manage to live with themselves? I hate what I have to do in order to be functional.

Yes, unfortunately for people who are outsiders looking in, that is the norm. Creating a persona to "fit in" is simply a solution one employs to avoid repercussions. And that's not your fault. I sometimes feel the same way: like I been backed up into a corner and have no other choice but to create this persona. But one way I found to cope is to is to accept myself. Realize there is nothing wrong with you or the way you think. Realize how complex society and your brain actually are. So much so that statistically speaking, it would be near impossible for everyone to think alike. It's not you. It's the complexity of the situation. Also realize that not everyone is out to get you. Some are, but also some will at worst just agree to disagree and move on. It's one thing disagreeing with someone and a whole different thing alienating them for disagreeing.
I used to think I'm a spectator, observer, watcher. I wanted to be the creator but I just sit there and watch the human nature rise and fall and rise.
Why you need to be functional ? Why you need to be happy all the time ? You don't. You are not a robot. If society doesn't like you they can go and f themselves .
I would argue that growing up with an external perspective towards society is MUCH more of a blessing than a curse. It certainly is not the path of least resistance, but it means that you are freed from traditional biases (though you will certainly still have your own) and put you in a good position to generate new, innovative ideas.
I relate a lot to what you are saying about society seeming to demand a particular persona. It can sometimes feel like you have to conform to a worse version of yourself in order to function 'normally.' To be completely honest, it's probably inevitable that you will have to change/develop your persona into something that meshes with society. However, I've found that it's possible to do that without becoming something worse or being inauthentic. I know it doesn't always seem like it, but if you can connect with the right people, then being someone that doesn't 'fit the mold' can actually give you some major social brownie points (not that that should be the end-goal).
In the end, I think you'd be probably gain more by refining exactly who you want to be, and THEN figuring out how that can fit into the broader scheme of society. The alternative is to allow _society_ to decide who you should be, which I don't think should EVER be permitted (even if it is only for your 'social persona').
It's important to overcome some basic things like self-doubt and social anxiety, but if you can effectively articulate how you see the world, then I think you might be surprised by how receptive some people are.
Best of Luck. These are just my thoughts, obviously. I'm still figuring it out as well.
Always search for the TRUTH, always listen to the given answer if the answer is questionable then you do not have the truth this is how I think for myself

I remember all the times I told my friend to always think for himself when doing math, I'm really better than him, because mostly I'd think for myself... Now where am I? I barely think for myself these days, I mostly ask shit online, even after a break up, or I just feel shit mixed, I'd go on Google, or just ask anyone to tell me what to do... I agree that people do need to think for themselves, but I also believe that young people, like myself, should seek advice and knowledge from those who have more life experience than us. There is a lot we can learn from the older people in our lives.

The endless stream of information and entertainment online is overwhelming and can make one feel helpless. I think it is best to always be searching for new perspectives and holes in your knowledge, as well as limiting the time online to force you to make the time there well spent. It is also good to openly discuss this with people in real life, as rhetoric makes you understand logic of different arguments better.
Keep up the great work, always thinking deeply when I watch these.

You need to go meta. If you don't build a system that makes biases transparent, nobody will ;) The will to do so must be found from within, and you won't be able to logically prove incorrect thinking to anyone who doesn't already trust in that possibility anyway. Hopefully we'll at least manage to introduce some kind of Bias Quotient metric (or a Consciousness Quotient) if enough people care about evolving our digital social networks towards reflection :)

I was in 7th grade when I got a Facebook,(I think, 2006ish) this year I deleted it.
I feel relieved.
I stayed with it until I was permabanned during GamerGate. I simply never looked back 😂 it's hardly the first time or the last I was ostracized from a group. 😂

I used to think that I would eventually default into thinking and feeling what other people thought and felt. So much so that I tried to force the notion on myself, which caused me a great deal of unwarranted stress. But now that I'm older, and I still like a lot of the things I did as a kid, I know that I was wrong, and that sometimes you just like something because you like it.
I am WONDERFULLY BLESSED to have been given a BRAIN capable of THINKING and QUESTIONING. I put NO ONE on a pedestal.

This is incredibly important to understand, and it is so now more than ever.
Back in my days this was the norm in my culture, yet that changed about a decade ago when the big powers started to take over the internet and the tools of manipulation it brings to the table.
Now, freethinkers are rare to come across in the wild, and those that are around rarely show themselves as freethinkers unless they are provoked.
This world isn't what it once was and understanding all of this is the only way to change that.
One must realize that not realizing the problem at hand is the problem in of itself.

When have people ever truly thought for themselves? It’s a question I pose not to counter your argument entirely-because algorithms do pose a potential threat. But I think that absolute freedom is actually a very recent invention. For most of history, there have been both institutions (religion) and conditions (harsh environments and social expectations) that have suppressed any independent thought-and frankly many of us consented to and even embraced that oppression because it promised order in a chaotic world. The allure of the algorithm speaks to the fact that freedom is too destabilizing of a concept for a species that is naturally very comfortable with having its existence dictated by external forces. But that doesn’t mean I’m opposed to freedom, I’m just saying that we have barely glimpsed what true freedom is, and we have to ask ourselves how much of it do we really want, and how much of our lives can we leave in the hands of others.

The fact which scares me now is,
I always had these opinions that
confirmation bias is sh!t, people have merely become the puppets of formalities,
the information which is being fed to us is certainly bad for us, as we are unable to take in other kind of information which we will need to dig out from somewhere, this again makes us think we are right without actually being right.
Now the part which scares me, this video tells exactly these things, and I feel better about myself now, and this video was certainly recommended to me by TH-cam.
Now this just suggests that I have already fallen into the hands of algorithms, and confirmation bias.
I am simply confirming that confirmation bias is bad, with the help of a video which I got suggested by an algorithm.

I agree with you and it's even more contradictory. I have always thought that it was careless of people to only reenforced ideas they previously established/believed in. But then I stumbled upon this video, which reconcile with my beliefs, and your comment.
It's so paradoxical that I agree with both the video and the comment, both of which are suggested through TH-cam (one being the recommendation algorithm; the other based off likes-dislikes ratio). The idea of despising confirmation bias while confirming what itself is a form of confirmation bias and being self-aware about it is both hilarious and scary to me.
It fathoms me how there can be so many layers of irony to such an idea. I mean, if you were to agree with my reply that's another layer added right there. Even at the end I don't know whether I should be.. happy, that I actually think for myself. Or, be scared for confirming thinking for myself is good and I should be happy about it. It's so weird haha
@@juliancassidy3081 well I tried thinking about this a bit harder.
Here's what I come up with,
1) we BOTH did have these beliefs before watching this video, we both or some others had thought about this like we both did, BEFORE WATCHING THE VIDEO.
But is there any way of knowing we didn't hear this from someone else and now we just think it was our own independent thought? It's very much possible or reasonable to say, not only this but every single thing we say, we agree has just been stolen from someone else at some point by US.
But then this raises a question if everybody is just stealing eachother's opinions whose opinions these actually are?
Well a simple simple simple answer to that is,
confirmation bias, nobody absolutely nobody never had any opinions,
even this opinion of mine which suggests 'nobody never had any opinion'
is not of someone independent, it's just a concept which is seemingly agreed by at least some people, so others also state it. Including me.
Now another possibility would be, we are humans, a human can only so much think different from other humans,
so by this logic people with identical personality traits end up thinking about something in an identical way.
This now suggests nobody necessarily doesn't copy eachother or wants to confirm their opinions at every point in their life,
it just so happens that sometimes even without trying we end up having similar opinions,
not for any external need for say validation or confirmation. It just happens.
But when you think about this thing with a little bit of sanity,
you will understand it is indeed little bit of both of those reasons, we are sometimes totally independent, we sometimes really do just want validation. That's how we remain sane, why do we wanna be sane though? cause it has been confirmed remaining sane is apparently a good thing lol !!!
Edit: I love thinking about irony, hypocrisy, mediocrity, independance, free will, existentialism, absurdism, personality types, etc topics. from a long time, well in that journey I probably formed these opinions so I really won't take credits for what I have said above.

I feel like, the term "bad" is loosely defined here by me lol. How do I put this, "bad" as in being illogical? Well I thought about it, but not really actually! It can be counterproductive, but not illogical. Largely, it depends. God it's so hard to explain this hahaha.
So like "criticizing something while actively indulging in it, and acknowledging the fact that you're doing it" can simply be translated to "hypocritically hypocrising one's own hypocrisy"? And apparently, that makes sense?? Like, having an opinion on something might correlates to being hypocritical about something else and that's okay? As you put it, we can have independent thoughts while still seek approvals sometimes and that's totally normal. Totally human.
It makes me question what are the effects of being self-aware about being contradictory. Does it make you any less of hypocrite? Probably not. But it probably does justify your thoughts to be normal, or sane. Since you recognize that your thoughts might not be your own, but what are suggested to you. Even if you think some of these are thoughts that you encapsulated prior to watching the video. At least I think it's understandable 🤣.
Well I have a suggestion for the third case, that yes opinions are a mixed mess of internal and external views, but that doesn't mean opinions can't be unique/different. Even if two people wholeheartedly agree on every single points in a subject, their opinion is still distinctive. It's similar at best, imagine an asymptote, it keeps approaching a curve but never meets it. That's probably the best analogy I got for now haha

I have high functioning autism, which at times limits my communication skills, and/or the way that I process information, thoughts and feelings. I feel that most of my opinions are formed from the plethora of books that I have read on various subjects. When it comes to watching videos, I usually watch things that will help me understand more about my own perception of reality, as well as others. The problem with improving technological advances is that it increases our expectations of the technology working how we want it and when we want it, and we get frustrated when it doesn't... Life is like wolves and moonlight; you can howl with the others at the moon, or you can chase after it.
Howling with others sounds like the smarter option in that instance....Chasing the moon, stupid wolf.

I do not comment often, but I think that reading comment threads can be helpful as to seeing various points of view on a topic. Well, even if the majority of them already agree quite a lot with the video themselves, the fact that us users are able to answer a comment in a different manner or add something to what is said leads to discussion, hence questioning how much we know (or not).
It's impossible to think for yourself... We enter this world with an animal brain that guides us to keep us alive. But other than that, we are a blank slate. We absorb everything around us and make decisions based on what has been programmed into us. The world around us and other humans we interact with end up creating us. How can you think for yourself when everything you know and believe was first programmed into you before you could ever think of it on your own to begin with?
