  • Sorry for the low volume. I wanted to record the instrument as it is. Without any compression, limiters etc. Just crank up the volume :)
    Boss DR-202 was the first piece of gear I ever owned. I got it right when it came out1998.
    I've saved the very first patches and patterns from the day when I got it and never had heart to record over those. In this video there is patterns from my really early days getting familiar with hardware gear, to more new stuff that I've programmed in last five years. This is not ment to be a product demo. Just to show how DR-202 sounds. Most of the TH-cam videos from it seem to be hip hop oriented.
    While its my first groovebox I still use it. It has pretty good set of drum sounds and its sequencer gets a lot of use.
    DR-202 has three sequencer tracks, DRUMS, BASS and EXTernal.
    Bass and Ext channels are polyphonic so you can record chords etc. Only bigger limitation for me is the pattern lenght. Patterns max lenght is 8 bars.

      Thans Justin :) I've spend fair share of time with this thing too in
      the past. After all these years I still find it useful. Even as an
      simple sequencer for example drums or bassline this thing rocks. Hook it
      with external gear and use 202's sequencers groove templates to get
      really cool shuffle and swing patterns.

    Thanks for reminding me how great this box is. Spent hours looking for something new and decided to re-review my DR, so glad I found your video. I need to find my DR now, it's stored somewhere in my place and it is exactly what I needed to complete my street gig setup. Sometimes what you really need...you already have it.

    DR-202 was my second "groovebox". The first was the MC-303. I just purchased a TR-8 and after all I wonder if that was really necessary. The 202 is a wonderful little box, and like you, it's fun to come back to these patterns that I did 15 years ago! The TR-8 has just 16 patterns. This drives me mad that Roland limited the number of patterns, kits, etc on the TR-8 when memory is so cheap today!

    Been hunting forever for an old school drum machine. FINALLY! I am loving this. Had a Yamaha rx11 back in 96 or 97 that I picked up from a pawn shop. Loved that thing but wanted something with a little more variation and functionality. Trying to get further away from my PC and back to my roots. Everything digital these days I just find stifling to creativity.

I have to take that as an Huge compliment :) Couple of years back there was plenty of these going around and I thought that I would get another one, simply because of its cool sequencer. These still pop up at eBay almost weekly and there is three in auction at the moment, but prices are bit steep. I would pay around 100$/100€ for a DR-202 in fair condition. I've seen some go as cheat as 50-75$.

Thanks for the review. I was aware of this and the sp202 back in the days and was intrigued but never really looked into what they could do. The Dr202 will also work as the sequencer the sp202 is lacking.

    Hey I have a question as Im using a 202 myself. The other day I got the Roll to start playing just before the end of every sequence. I dont know how I did it but it was syncing in time with the bmp and the sequence, even when I was changing through the kits it continued to play like 2 seconds of roll before the end of every sequence without me being able to stop it. And it actually made the change overs into different kits sound really amazing because it was in time! Sorry If I sound like a complete dumbie but I've never been able to do this before and I also don't know how I did it/havent been able to since. Any helpers on youtube out there that can explain how I achieved this phenomena ? ps. the Boss manual doesnt explain it.....

    Nice live demo, I've owned this along with a SP-202 since way back in 1998. If you don't mind me asking but how did you get such amazing sound on your recording? Did you record with the MIDI or Step/Live recording? 2 thumbs way up by the way.

    • @tiergrinder
      @tiergrinder  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank, glad that you liked it! :) All the beats and sequenced are recorded with Step recording. It can be pretty tedious at least with patterns that are 8 bars long and have busy polyphonic arpeggio running through the pattern.
      I've used this machine almost 20 years so I guess I'm just got used to use it internal sequencer in step mode.

    • @sinmelody
      @sinmelody 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +tiergrinder this drum machine although it's over 20 years old now is nonetheless a beast especially with MIDI and the built-in in sequencer makes this 1 of the cheapest drums with so many abilities I've ever used.

    Think I could get some industrial sort of godflesh sounds from this?

    • @tiergrinder
      @tiergrinder  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I listened couple Godflesh tracks and I'm pretty confident that DR-202 fits for industrial beats too. DR-202 has TR-707, TR-808 and TR-909 samples in it. It also had nice selection of "acoustic" drum kicks, snares, hats and percussions that would fit for rock and industrial use. You can also pitch drum sounds to fit those better for a track.
      Many of the pioneer EBM and Industrial bands used a lot of roland TR-series back then. Nitzer EBB and Front Line Assembly used lot of TR-707, Trent used 808 and 909 on early NIN releases. I think Skinny Puppy used a lot of TR drum machines too. I read that Godflesh original drum machine was an Alesis HR-16. You can find those cheap but programming and editing is much easier on DR-202.

      @charlieogunremi949 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its hard to mix Bluegrass with Dance music - for starters Bluegrass has that 2/4 feel that does not work with most 4/4 patterns. Also the tempo of bluegrass means you have to play normal patterns either half speed or Double speed. You will have more luck with old time modal stuff fitting with Dance music than anything more country.
