    The missions carry a weight of despair that in my opinion is almost unparalleled; I always go back to the Buddha and Italian Mission as a reference to this aspect of hopelessness. In the third mission, the tragedy and unnerving trait of it is not so much the high level of body count, but the intimacy of the deaths: even the those who were not developed as characters and could simplistically be called fodder had a close-up moment of pain, confusion, regret, heroism (Kishimoto trying to protect Kato) and or desperation before dying in the most brutal manner imaginable... the Buddha/Kannou Alien mission was intimate slaughterhouse spectacle. Dissolution via acid, instant anti-neurotransmissive dismemberment, devourment, bisection, neck breaking, crushing... all of the most humiliating forms of killing took place in that mission alongside the Italian mission.
    I really like Hachiro Oka (think that’s the name) from the Osaka team, that hunter was a beast... his off-panel death corroborates just how despairing the story was.

    • @blazin_hl
      @blazin_hl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@blazin_hl Good morning Juan! How are you? Forgive me for replying nearly ten days later, TH-cam has a habit of not properly notifying people lately. I am not the kind to ignore other fellow human beings, I use the internet for amicable reasons and projections. So, yes I see why you love the Italian Mission. I love it because it redeemed Inaba in a very special way... he never felt loved and felt nihilistically useless but the moment he gained inspiration and felt nurtured by Suzuki's fatal sacrifice, the beast within was something that was as competent of a hunter as Kurono and Kato and Kaze. In fact, he took out an alien sub-boss equivalent in power (possibly) to the Tengu Alien and the latter killed a 400 pointer in the Osaka mission. So it was sadly personal for me to see Inaba die in such a horridly unceremonious way, yet briefly with a lot impact and emotion. Hell this is a man who never trained with the Tokyo Team out of spiteful envy, yet he performed better than the italian hunters he deemed stronger the Osaka members.

      @@igormendoncacanga2569 I honestly didn’t like his character cause his reminds me of so many people that make me cringe & was a try-hard, but just cause I didn’t like him doesn’t make him a Bad character. I think it’s complimentary for me not liking him cause he made me feel this way & that’s a win on Oku’s part. Especially with the fact that Oku brought humane interactions/characteristics to a real degree. I loved how they killed him off cause it was waaaaay too unexpected (granted we should already be used to this, lol) after the fact he went against his own fears & fought like f’ng hell til he showed Kurono he grew big a$$ cojones.

    • @igormendoncacanga2569
      @igormendoncacanga2569 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      And Kurono truly liked him and saw him as a brother (we all know Kurono’s real family were the people e ultimately fought with side by side) to the extent that both he and Kato begged to differ against the God Aliens’ remark on the meaninglessness of human life by rhetorically asking if Inaba’s life wasn’t important! That also shows Kurono’s developMENTAL ontogeny as a character for he too was quite unlikeable. La cosa rica en GANTZ (I speak Portuguese, not Spanish ahaha... just trying to be interactively accommodating) is these characters presenting negatives traits are being negative out of fear which is the foundational reasons why people behave the way they do in real life. People are immaturely afraid of life so they develop these compensatory projections of being try-hards, domineering, hypersexual, confusing apathy for mental fortitude when all it does is dehumanize oneself and others. I for one, don’t like Reika... she was too obsessed with Kurono to the point that she played God and ended up creating an existential issue which plagued the Kei Clone (who turned out more combatively aggressive than the real Kei out of a sense of proving his ontological worth). She could’ve revived either Inaba or Suzuki but instead, she couldn’t overcome what truly was a cathetic obsession. Even Inaba confessed to her at one point in his car that he was willing to be a better person and a more competent fighter just to protect Reika as he tries to realistically persuade he to let go of Kurono’s already in a relationship with Tae (another character I really like lol due to her childlike humanity). This is interesting because there were a lot of hints since the dinosaur mission that suggested this possibility of Inaba and Reika actually being together and then during the Oni Alien mission this became evident with the misleading fatal seduction Inaba was too blind to see through and nearly died as a result (he mentions before “they” copulate that he was going to protect her... he had genuine feelings for Reika unlike with his past girlfriend whom is implied in the dinosaur mission if I recall correctly or in some other source that she was abusive or at least psychologically draining to Inaba, hence him not being too emotionally distraught at the prospect of her death caused by Izumi’s mass shooting rampage. This would add another layer to Inaba’s desperate fit of nihilism minutes before being transferred to Italy. He probably had been used by many people and horribly neglected, so being profound here, after Reika rejecting him, he probably gave up on the sanctity of human relationships and drowned into a much much more cynical worldview of godlessness and how “nobody” cared about him. Little did he know Kurono, Kato, Suzuki held him to a high regard despite his cowardice and not proving anything combatively substantial until his final moments came about).

      Nah not everything has a reason. The insert of vampires seemed really forced, they really had no real impact on the plot (aside for Kuronos brother being a vamp himself ...like wtf?). Then they just abruptly never showed up again (other than Hikawa and other girl vamp watching Kurono battle the giant invader general)after giving some halfbaked explination that they helped aliens against the hunters and nanobots cant really remember. one thing i always tought about gantz was that a videogame adaptation could be truly great !
    You can make one where you create your character, choose your country and region, and play online with people randomly selected by the computer (the game has to select a number of ppl according to the difficulty of the mission just like in the manga). Then you're teleported in the map, you already know the rules but the fun thing would be that there are absolutely no tutorial and so new people would be totally confused. There would be permanent death on your character unless you score 100 points with another of your character and decide to resurrect him. The coolest thing would be that it would greatly expand the number of weapon, vehicles and aliens and if the project could one day be possible, it would be awesome if the original author could design those new elements

    Great video as always Tranquil, I started with your Berserk video and instantly subscribed. Gantz is such an underrated manga, it's only known to some people. It's isn't that very well known like Bleach, Naruto etc. cause of the excessive violence, gore, and s3x. But Gantz is big at Spanish and Portugese countries I even joined groups that appreciate Gantz, most of them are Spanish or Portugese. It sucks that Oku Hiroya can't do much with the IP cause Hollywood still has the rights for Gantz, and it'll be a long time before it expires (probably 2025 onwards), he can't create any anime adaptation or movies, Oku only has the manga rights I think. Hopefully it gets fixed soon, I'd love to see a anime remake of the manga, similar to what they did to Blade of The Immortal.

    Gantz is my absolute *favourite* manga. It's such a mindfuck, I love it so so much. There are some really really well-written character redemption progressions and high emotional stakes that actually got to me and made me cry haha which a lot of media can't do. I think a lot of people brush it off as simple violence/gore porn. But really, it's such a complex story of love and sacrifice, and the main protagonist's growth into a good and caring person through trauma and loss.
    The anime could have been so fucking great had they not ended it early, the three arcs that they created directly from the manga were in my opinion very well-executed, and I'd love to see someone else give it another go and see it through to the end.
