No True Christian would Write Trigun? If you only realized how many Biblical Figures there are in the Bible that are flawed Besides Jesus given how Jewish writing shows its figures as Flaws as they are great compared to Greek writing that emphasizes the ups of the characters. You'll realize Vaush is no Corruption of a Prophet. But how someone tries to hold true to their ideals while being a Fallable individual.
Heck. Prophet Jonah is the perfect example of a flawed Prophet.
Thus Vaush is now more of a Follower trying to do his best to stay true to his ideals. Suffering doubt that honestly is not unknown to Christianity.
If you ask there was no perfect saint. Of course there wasn't because humans are fallen but God still works through flawed people.
Perfect example of this is St. Moses the Black. Literal Bandit turned monk after being moved by the Ascetic life of a Monastery but also had doubt when he became a Monk realizing his own flaws.
Reading through the many saints makes you realize. There were human as well. But became more endearing for it.
So no. Nothing you said about Trigun being Blasphemous makes sense anyways. I wouldn't call it Blasphemous. Closer to how a Believer would do what they can to stay true to their ideals. Stumble on that road but continue on it as well.

Yes! I'm always surprised when other people don't notice this! It is pretty amazing how easily Vash could have become the bad guy... I like to think that he was able to work it over through his outburst/attack on Rem but Knives bottled it up, and that contributed to his mindset; he wasn't awake to hear Rem begging for forgiveness or about how she had tried to stop it from happening so he had no context and couldn't understand how Vash had seemingly 'gotten over it'.

This is just my personal opinion, but as a man of (christian) faith myself, I don't think writing a story like Trigun as a christian is blasphemous. Quite the opposite, I personally think christian creators should make content like this. Sometimes "christian" songs, movies, or whatever loose quality in exchange of a "christian" message (for example, why all worship music sounds like U2 repeating the same phrase 30 times) instead of just creating good stories, songs, or whatever. Christians should stop making "christian" content, and start creating good content. I think is possible to do that around personal values without falling into boring repetitive cliches.

Atheist myself, but I agree with you 100 percent. I consider many of the old Biblical Epics like 10 Commandments and Ben-Hur true works of art that anyone with an interest in film history should at least make an effort to watch, they're just that good. Most modern Christian media is more focused on selling a modern agenda instead of depicting timeless stories.

    • @JNeedham
      @JNeedham ปีที่แล้ว +82

I agree with you as well. As someone who is also a Christian, I found that watching the Trigun series also helped me evaluate myself and how I live. Do I live out what I say I believe, or do I live in constant hypocrisy. The Bible is amazing (I’ve read it now many times through) because it isn’t meant to be a guidebook, but rather to show the greatness of God who is totally and completely unknowable, but is kind and loving and chooses to work through really broken and messed up people. The stories in the Bible aren’t meant always to be practiced, but learned from. There is redemption available for all people, even the most broken people. And that’s the beautiful hope we have. The story of Trigun also reminds me of that.

@yadsewnde8699 Christ not only died for the sins of all humanity but He literally became sin in that moment. Because of this God had forsaken Christ when He died on the cross (Mark 15:34; Matt. 27:46).
Even though this was necessary for Jesus to save humanity, you have to understand that He was extremely stressed even before the torture He went through. He did not do that with a smile on His face.

    • @FeedMeSalt
      @FeedMeSalt 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      HIGHLY debatable.
Christ said "will you take this cup"
In reference to the responsibility placed apon him by god without his choice.
When he was dying on the cross, he did not pray for humans, he said "why have you forsaken me father"
His last words were pain and questions.
The bible rarely if ever shows Jesus as a willing pawn in God's games.
It mentions OFTEN how god sent his own son. But rarely does that son every express agreement with the plan.
Also, depending on what type of Christian you are, Jesus never existed, or Jesus is god himself.
      So like meh

One point, I thought the one who stabbed himself was Vash, and the point was that by overcoming the outburst and the dark spiral he entered from the trauma allowed him to overcome and adopt a complex outlook on morality, while Knives becomes as messed up as he is by suppressing it all and growing less emotionally stable over time. It fits the manga exclusive portrayal where Knives is the more emotionally vulnerable brother initially

I just straight-up couldn't read it. I followed the plot, largely, but I simply couldn't parse a lot of the action scenes, and I had a similar problem dropping me out of One Piece, though there I jsut disliked Oda's overcomplicated art phase. I do read a lot of crazy and obtuse art like Blame but some exceptions I jsut won't put myself through when I got so much on my backlog.
On the other hand, I really apprecaite just the basics of the craft brought to extreme, ike Yusuke Murata, Kouji Mori and Katsuhiro Otomo...'s son, Shohei. Just to shout out his ballpoint pen art.
And to make the point, Akira and Monster still ahve a lot of that western, pin-up stye DNA that is not UNIQUELY a manga staple. That's why I don't go for those titles to rank what would be the BEST manga, at beign a manga. Same as my favorite movie is not Les Mis and Les Mis is not the best MOVIE, but the stage production is my favorite at beign what it is. Well, maybe Titus has got it beat despite being hindranced by having to be a film as well.
If you're going to do anime, you SHOULD go for making something like Trigun OG though. If you do something like the Les Mis film because a film HAS to be THAT, you're failing at both ends. And Stampede kinda falls into that rut, especially with voice acting. About as good as Russel Crowe singing, and I feel it's becauase it was an afterthought after everything else.

Yeah exactly! Knives was passed out the entire time until Rem was already recovering from being stabbed. That's why he didn't get the "blank ticket to the future" speech that (I think, and maybe it implies outright in the manga?) solidifies Vash's morals and makes him believe in humans/humanity.

I appreciate the discussion around religion here, since it’s so integral to Trigun’s story. One thing I do just want to say though, is that since there are so many branches of Christianity that believe very different things and interpret the Bible very differently, it changes how you interact with it. The idea of “perfect saints” is more akin to Catholicism, or works-based Christianity, while “everyone is imperfect, all we can do is our best for peace and love even if we fall short” is more like Protestant, or or faith-based Christianity. As someone who loves Trigun and is the latter myself, it gets frustrating when discussions about my religion are dominated by lumping my branch in with another branch that doesn’t match up with my beliefs at all. THAT BEING SAID...this might be the single best argument I've seen in years for the existence of God. This was the first time I've genuinely questioned my beliefs in quite some time, because I very much understand the importance of the distinction being made here. I was not aware of this distinction until now, from a biblical standpoint. I will remain an agnostic for the moment, but this DOES give me something to ponder.

I read the manga as it was released in America. And OH MY GOD, it's so different, goes in different directions, gets darker, gorier, more action packed, my inciteful, than the anime series, and also explains more about things like those damned light bulb plants.....which, after explained, you kinda NEED to know this for the Vash and Knives to make sense! The last battle for Wolfwood is better, more action-packed, and has much more depth, and the final battle between Vash and Knives is a 10 to the anime's 3 (at best). I chalk all this up to the original writer/creator/mangaka Katsuhiro Nightow making the anime when the manga started, then taking 10-ish years to write the manga, getting more ideas and changing things around over time and making the story better than what he originally envisioned. THE BIGGEST THING OF ALL BETWEEN THE MANGA AND ANIME......once you read the manga series, you just can't go back to the anime, and you wish they'd make a new series that stays more true to the manga (like they did with Full Metal Alchemist and Hellsing, only getting better with their second anime series).

If you're gonna be a downer just because your cute psycho murderer fake lover boy gets not killed, but chopped the hell up into several pieces, sown back together as a Frankenbitch, remade into Knives little "catcher" and 'NOT'-favorite anymore......go somewhere else. The sandworms are possessing bodies by slipping in with the little mosquito forms. Very ew!
Edit: And no, it is not Knife that attacks Rem with a knife, it is Vash. That was one of Vash' focal points towards his position about forgiveness and pacifism. Added to that, Rem herself is a person that is in atonement. She didn't act to protect Tessla, the first independent plant, and has a massive amount of guilt because of that. That's why she goes to far against ship protocol and keeps Vash and Knifes secret.

It's been years since I read this manga, but I remember having a lot of trouble trying to follow the panels sometimes.... often times actually. I would have to re-read pages over and over, studying action scenes in detail just to figure out what happened. And most of the time I would just end up moving on with only a basic understanding that "Oh, Vash won I guess..."

  • @RefMr

Okay I think this maybe glosses over the coolest aspect of Legato in his fight. As funny as “his body is healed for some reason, don’t think about it” is, it’s actually way more metal than that. I could be wrong, but from my memory he’s able to move only because he’s using his body control threads on himself. Like his body never really healed from Knives pancaking him. He just recovers enough to puppet himself, his own broken bones around, in order to move. And that explains why he’s way stronger and able to swing huge weapons around suddenly as he’s using the electricity through the threads to pump up his own muscles to their full limit at all times.
That’s why he doesn’t try to use his control threads on Vash at first and instead attempts to overpower him with the new weapons and fighting style, because he’s using all that power just to make himself move. As well as the coin case thing that’s supposed to block that I guess. Other than the one monitoring Livio’s fight. Eventually he is forced to use it but at least at the beginning that was my takeaway from it all~

This was a great trip down memory lane. Loved the trigun manga so much. I started with the anime, but the tragedy of the manga really showed me how great a story and how amazing Vash was as a character. Kudos to Nightow for putting the story. (Even if his art during action did make a lick of sense most of the time.still looked dope though. Laughed at how much you guys touched on that fact in this video.) I actually like the new anime since to me it better captures the tragic attrition of the pacifist then the original did, though doesn't quite hit the balance of levity and questions of morality the manga had. Hopefully the next part does it more justice.

  • @itsasquid

I really need to read the rest of the manga. I grew up watching the 98' anime and it's one of my top favorites. Part of it was because of the fantastic characters and the action and part of it was because of the Christian imagery (I grew up and am still a practicing Christian.) Watching and falling in love with TriStamp reignited my love for the series and seeing this video got me super siked for the manga and for the future of Trigun Stampede. I really hope that Dark Horse reprints the manga now that TriStamp is picking up speed.
I'm not sure if I agree with your assessment that a "true Christian" couldn't have written this manga though. Part of what I loved about the series as a Christian is how bleak it is even in the anime. How the anime shows the cost of Vash's values despite trying his hardest to live by them. I appreciate how the story constantly challenges Vash and Wolfwood's values and shows that they fail. I honestly prefer a story that takes influence from Christian values and does their own thing and challenges the reader rather than a story that just preaches to you one way while demonizing the other. Even if Nightow was questioning his faith while finishing the manga, I still find that more impactful than most Christian media in general.

I appreciated the synopsis / analysis. I remember trying to get into the manga at one point, but I dropped it and found myself satisfied with the anime for clarity reasons. The segments of confusion over interpreting over-busy panels was cathartic, and I got to have the story I missed made digestible.
I still need to think on it and chew over the differences between the two. Not having read it myself, this might not be a charitable take, but I can't help but wonder if the rest of the manga wasn't a bit bloated. Here's what I mean: Trigun really is about the clash between the real and the ideal as Vash tries his hardest to hold on to his pacifism. It's been some years since I watched the anime, but thematically, I don't know that the '98 anime is missing anything integral to the message of the story. I love big epics as much as the next guy, but there's also something to be said for a preaching knowing when to stop once he's made his point.
That being said, as an Evangelical Lutheran minister in training, I can't help but roll my eyes at the various ad hominem's against Christianity. I found myself convinced by this video that Trigun is more thoroughly Christian than was hastily argued at the end. The whole point of Christianity is the need for Jesus Christ to be the Savior of humanity. Denominations will argue the *how* of salvation in Jesus Christ, but the whole point is that God decided humanity was worth saving of his own accord. Vash does much the same thing. He refuses to take life because of an inherent value, a presumed sanctity. Yes, church history is a history of sinners, but that's kinda the point? Vash is a Christ figure to be sure, but he does not end up being Christ himself. Ultimately any Christian who communicates through narrative ultimately will make characters who are flawed, who cannot live up to perfection, otherwise Christianity wouldn't need Christ.

In the closing remarks when it is said that "ideals need to be put aside sometimes" in the context of doing what is right to avoid hypocrisy, I think the real disconnect in the interpretation of virtue is that Trigun is a world without a good, omnipotent, omniscient, sovereign God who can carry out good which cannot be hindered or overcome by evil. Without such a sovereign God, virtue has no meaning, cannot stand against the power of evil, and must be cast aside to in the pursuit of utilitarian ideals when push comes to shove.
In Trigun we are shown fallible, finite people who cannot escape the problem of evil, and who must sacrifice virtue at times for the greater good because the alternative is impossible for them. It makes sense that without God, virtue becomes hypocrisy, but just because Trigun contains Christian themes, does not mean that Christianity is subject to the flawed interpretation of virtue here.

Trigun looks like another one of those mangas whose creator was heavily influenced by American comic shorts; in this case, Calvin and Hobbes. Similar to how the creator of Ranma½ and Inuyasha was inspired by Peanuts. But Vash also bears a certain resemblance to Elric of Melnibone; in that things rarely end in some sort of unrealistically idyllic way for him.

I think putting aside specific religions and creeds, Trigun has a pretty simple lesson to teach: Righteousness (as in the things YOU believe to be good and true) is easy. It's as easy as pulling a trigger to end the life of an "evil" person or dominating a group that you think is immoral with your followers. No matter what political or religious spectrum you align with, your human nature craves vengeance and retribution for things that you see as wrong in the world. Sometimes that comes in the form of bigotry. Sometimes it comes in the form of refusing to listen to someone's point of view before condemning them publicly. This is the path of Knives, and it feels so good.
Vash represents the harder aspects of faith and morality. Living and letting others live despite the potential threat they offer to your way of thinking or way of life, self-sacrifice in order to show others that there is a better way, building relationships with people who don't think like you instead of being aggressive and "morally pure". It has no immediate payout and it sometimes results in nothing but loss, but it is indeed the only way forward without hatred.
And, yeah, we see that no one can be perfect all the time. Sometimes there is a need for righteous hellfire to consume a destructive and "evil" threat. I think Vash just shows us that reaching for the gun instead of thinking about love and peace first is not virtuous, despite how it may feel to you at the time. For every dogmatic priest there is a sanctimonious Twitter preacher telling us how we must think to align to the new morality. People love to moralize, they love to shame and punish. People want things to feel good and be easy. But if we are to be better as a race, we need to start turning to the methods that feel hard and arduous. That self-satisfied, smug feeling you get from schooling a "libtard" or a "conservative snowflake" is not virtuous, it's nothing but masturbation. Vash would ask you to try reaching out your hand before you pulled your gun instead, to see if maybe you can create a future that's not played out in the ruins of the human world.

As fondly as I've loved the '98 anime since my early teens, I could barely get myself to read through the first chapter of the manga on the single occasion I tried later on. I remember looking at the familiar ground it was covering and thinking "Okay, cool. Exactly how much of this am I gonna have to put up with in order to get to the new shit?"
So with that in mind I highly appreciate the synopsis this video has provided, especially context I had been unaware of regarding the inception of Maximum. I had heard before about the shift being due to it's OG publisher going under, but knowing the OG run was for a Shonen mag while Maximum's pub was Seinen really puts it into perspective. It reminds me of this one day sometime in my early 20s I was hanging out at a local card shop. The owner ran it like a pawn shop at the time, so there happened to be a fair bit of other stuff just kinda hanging around for sale, including a shelf that had some manga amongst other books. I happened to spot a lone volume of Trigun Maximum (English) in there, so I popped it open to a random page and found myself right in the middle of Wolfwood vs. Livio/Chapel with absolutely no context (the point-blank missile panel stuck in my mind for sure) I had so many questions, and it feels quite nice to finally put them to rest.
However... Taking all this madness in, abridged as it may be compared to reading the actual volumes in their entirety, I can't help but find it remarkable just how perfectly Trigun '98 managed to hit the mark. Sure, it's a whole lot smaller in scope compared to the staggering scale of the manga's expanded cast and details, yet it seems all the most important concepts remain faithful in spirit... There's a bit where this video's script refers to Anime Knives as "the mysteriously motivated villain" that _really_ rubs me the wrong way. I felt his motivations were quite clear, even if the vast majority of his characterization only takes shape in 98's climactic finale. The spider/bufferfly metaphor is simplistic and childish, yet to me it seems an effective and accurate summarization of his character. All it takes for '98 Knives to reach the exact same judgement of humanity as his manga self is a basic grasp of historical events, the inherent predator/prey dynamic present in natural ecosystems as observed by humans, and quite possibly just _one_ personal experience being on the receiving end of domestic abuse. What follows from there makes sense to me, even if it doesn't have time for Knives to spell out every decision he makes... I feel the important ones are fairly obvious in context, even if the last episode in particular might take a rewatch or two to sink in for some viewers.

I guess he must have been serious about never leaving his house. If that’s what he actually thinks America is like.

Actually i think christian influence is pretty common in anime especially when it gets all existential. Vinland saga, trigun, evangelion, one piece, aot, ect. I think overlooking a whole religion because of a few ignorant zealots is kinda ironic given thats what vash is trying is trying to stop knives from doing with humanity. Imagine taking those same jabs at muslims because of the acts of a few extremist. Im no fan of organized religion myself but i can respect the depth of understanding it can provide to those wise enough to integrate it for their own personal development. All that aside the manga kinda seems a bit messy and i think ill stick with the 2 anime adaptions 😂

Glad for a recap of this, I read the manga a few years ago. I enjoyed it and the art is great, but there are a lot of moments of what am I even reading. I re-read some chapters multiple times in a better attempt to understand. Which sometimes worked and other times not so much. It does give the manga sort of a charm in a strange way. There's so much going on many will be compelled to read it again and notice different things from before.

Thanks for the breakdown; I only have 1st manga booklet, my manga bookshelf was too full so I lost desire to find more.
Bit sad to learn Wolfwood and Millie pairing/romance was only in the anime but other then that I'm excited where they'll take that Trigun Stampede show. Maybe they'll feature more romances but who really knows.... Much love and peace to your channel.

First time ever listening to a video from this channel, I thought the overall breakdown of tri-gun was fun but the closing argument was meh. Just seem like a bit of stretching, such as Christianity is more lethal today than it's ever been. It's a little far-fetched since we don't have crusades anymore and you have countries where they worship their leaders like gods such as North Korea that kill far more people on a yearly basis. And then there was the MAGA reference which is always just cringy to hear in first place. But it makes the author of the video sound like he's working on his gender studies degree. Other than that, the portion of the manga, which is what caught My eye in the first place was very good

Its been sad to see this guy's mental illnesses take over the channel and impact his work like this. He's been doing this a lot lately. I mean this is a guy who wept when Elon bought twitter. He needs to touch grass so badly.

I loved the video but the ending conclusion is pretty ironic with you saying that christian virtue signaling yet, i hear you virtue signaling for your ideals with little snide comments. i kinda think you are a hypocrite. but still great video

@48:00 the fight that reintroduces Elendira needs to happen almost exactly as it did, but maybe no amnesia for Vash and we can see what's going on. I feel like all of Vash's amnesia was in the manga because we hadn't seen what had happened, and Nightow hadn't figured out exactly what happened yet, so amnesia till further notice.
