Replacing a Valve Cover on VW 2.5L 5 Cylinder Engine (PCV Valve Built In)

- Are you having issues with your VW 2.5 engine running rough? The PCV valve diaphram on the 5 cylinder can tear causing a vacuum leak. The PCV valve on the VW 2.5 engine is built into the valve cover and the PCV valve assembly is not intended to be serviced separately. For this reason if your Volkswagen 2.5 PCV valve goes bad you should replace the whole valve cover.

Nice video! I'm not a mechanic at all; recently my '12 Jetta had a check engine light, took to a mechanic, where he replaced the MAP sensor, told me the valve assembly should be replaced, & the estimate for it is $600! My son (in another state, darn it!) suggested to check out maybe doing it myself to save money. Your video makes me feel as though we possibly can accomplish it!
Thank you!
Everything with the valve cover off is super easy to do. $600 is a pretty good price for replacing the valve assembly, but if you do have any experience working on cars, you should be able to do it your self. Just take your time and always double and triple check your work. I always try working on my car first, so i dont have to pay someone hundreds of dollars lol
Sonny can come interstate and do it 4 u lol
I changed out my pcv valve 3 weeks. Wasnt having any problems but decided it was time. Everything went well up to two nights ago. Got a check engine light and a whistle sound. Pulled out dipstick and got a whoosh sound. Couldn't remove oil cap because vacuum was so great (during idling). I located the vacuum link. When I replaced the pcv valve 3 weeks ago, I had snapped off a little bit of a plastic retaining tab that keeps the pcv valve firmly snugged into place. Since I had broken a little of this tab off prior, the top of my pcv valve unit had just enough little play in it to throw things off and give a check engine light. Careful with the little tabs when removing the pcv valve.
Ouch, That sucks. I will be sure to remember that if I need to work on it again.
I have the same issue. Replaced two Dorman Kits with same problem. The upper three tabs where not grabbing the Dorman 917-064 cap tight. I do not see any broken tabs on upper three but but feel spongy slack movement when I press around upper areas!!!
Thank you for this. Great video, very clear. I'll have to do this once my new Valve Cover arrives.
You are welcome! It is a pretty easy repair, just take your time and good luck!
@@PacificRacer Thank you! I will. I just got it and mine had a little note saying "IMPORTANT NOTICE: Before installing the new the valve cover, remove all oil that accumulated inside the Intake Manifold, PCV Breather, Hose and MAP Sensor, due to leaks from the old diaphragm in the old valve cover.
Failure to remove the ol before the installation of the new valve cover, will activate the Check Engine Light and cause the error code P0106." i.gyazo.com/ff23f77bae3c0545f3f0bb03f736e706.png
I see it wasn't in yours tho. Did you had any troubles with the Check Engine Light?
@@MikeAngel06 I had zero issues with mine after. I checked some hoses after I did the repair, and they all looked good. I caught my leak pretty early though. If yours has been leaking for a while, it might be a good idea to check all of those parts.
@@PacificRacer Alright, thank you.
@@MikeAngel06 You are welcome!
My Rabbit is Sputtering when Accelerating and sucking in air from the oil dipstick tube. I've already replaced all Coils, Plugs, Fuel Injector 1 (it was giving a Code), All Fuel Injector Top & Bottom O-Rings, PCV Valve and Pressure Tested the Cylinders. Also tried checking for an air leak with smoke around the engine but didn't notice anything abnormal. The Crank case doesn't look like its leaking and i Always check under my car for oil leaks every other time i park, hadn't seen anything since i've owned the car. Any idea what it could be?
What code was it giving?
Thank you for the great video. I just bought the valve cover and before I go ahead and install it, I wanted to know if I should put any gasket sealant on the rubber gasket? Thanks!
You are welcome! I normally rub some lithium soap grease on rubber gaskets firsts
Great Video!! Thanks, will definitely be doing this soon. 🙌🏾
Thanks for uploading. I look online and they sell valve cover gasket for $10 to $ 20. Why not replace just the gasket?
I didnt replace just the gasket because the pcv valve was failing also. Since the new valve cover comes with a new gasket and pcv valve, it was the right way for me to go
@@PacificRacer Dorman PCV is around $25 30 . I just mentioned that in case you didn't know . Thanks for the video :)
@@r.t.7925 i knew. I replaced the pcv valve first, and it failed the first week, there has been a record of just the pcv valve failing when only it has been replaced, but i did it anyways. After that, i just replaced the whole thing.
@@PacificRacer Wow - good to know :) thanks
Great video, thank you. It help out alot. Do you have something with the variable timing valve solenoid. Thanks
You are welcome! And I do not. I would make a video for you on it, but I am selling the car this weekend. Sorry!
If i have oil on map sensor, it could help? I have changed only the pcv valve but havent work. Maybe need to change the valve cover?
Yeah, I would change the whole cover. Thats the reason I did the whole cover with the pcv valve. I heard some people that only did the pcv valve still had a code come up.
@@PacificRacer thanks a lot
Hey what’s up man I have a p0301 anything on that I changed my spark plugs coils and engine old as well
Its odd you are still getting that code after changing plugs and coil packs. it could be carbon build up on your valves. it happens pretty often with vw engines
Hello Nick, thank you for posting this video , excellent work. Just curious what year and model of jetta you worked on Thank you.
You are welcome, and thank you! The car I worked on is a 2007 Rabbit
I have my power steering light on so is the check engine I think I have to change the gasket I have a 2009 jetta 2.5. Do you know if there’s anything I can do about the power steering I have the electrical power steering. Right now is hard to turn. But sometimes it works fine do you have and Idea of what it could be ?
Have you checked the fluid levels?
There’s no fluid level to it because is electric but I check for that part and is 1300 dollars
@@jmota28 Oh yeah, I dont know why i thought it had fluid haha I dont know much about the steering system VW uses, But since it is electric, the whole control unit might need to be swapped out. You can always find a cheaper used on in a junk yard. Although those part dont usually go bad. Make sure all the plugs are plugged in and all the wires are good also.
I had that same problem. I replaced the alternator and now it works just fine.
Thanks! Doing this next weekend
Sure
I replaced the pcv a few months ago and haven't had any issues. I did however have a hard time getting it off and on because of that metal bar that runs next to the coil packs. I couldn't get the screws to line up without my gasket falling out so I had to leave it as is and now I have a oil leak.
Should I put some kind of sealant to prevent the gasket from falling out place?
Take the metal bar off to do it then. You need all the screws back in
Torque from inside out and they should be torqued to 10nm or 7-8 ft lbs
True
Where did you get the cold air intake? I have been looking into getting one but don't know where to look or which one to get
Neuspeed makes it. I got it from their website

@@PacificRacer thanks so much!

How can i tell if the pcv is bad
You will get a code for it
Good job 👏 👍
On the pcv delete.. am gassing you remove the diaphragm completely and add the kit on?
Any help will be appreciated.. thanks
I believe so. I am not 100% sure though. If i ever have an issue with my PCV Valve again I will do the delete and post a video.
Ignore the torque specs at your peril. Naive to think they went to the trouble of providing a measurement you can disregard.
Hell yeah brother
thanks for this video that is very clear to do the job
You are welcome. I'm happy the video helped!
Thanks a lot bro
You are welcome!
Im going to order one tomorrow if the code still appears what can it be thanks again
@@masterbush420 if the code still comes up, it could be the mass airflow sensor also
They wanted $350.00 from Huntington VW on Long Island for entire valve cover... Needless to say, I only changed the PCV (round thing) instead for $35.00 - and it works fine now. Don’t spend the extra money - VW parts are total ripoff.
It just goes to show how much more valuable it is to know how to work on your own car. Dealerships can be a major ripoff
I changed the the DORMAN 917-064 kit and failed to close the pcv valve and got P0106, P2187, and misfire. Found the valve cape was not seating tight enough on top three tabs (Slack movement when I press it). Thought bad parts and bought the same kit from other place and installed, but the slack was still there and lasted for two days and failed same way. Check all tabs on top, but tabs were not broken. I installed a small clip near top tab to press the dorman pcv cover in. And that worked. I was able to open oil fill cap in idle quick open close (easy test to see PCV is working at idle). Now I have to move on to replace the valve cover because kit failed and old parts was trashed on day one (Keep your old part). In short, the Dorman 917-064 kit is not an universal fix. Now issue is which one is the reliable and economical valve cover and who is the dependable supplier? Please guide if you have an experienced similar issue before.
Gee that $150 part is $440 in 2023
Is it really that much now?
@@PacificRacer Only if you dont shop around.. I've seen it as low as 150 for a knock off.. 250 for OEM and up
