    I saw this video was over a year ago but I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the pace and instruction of your process. While I enjoy watching some of the sped up painters too this is much more useful for learning all that is going on. You are a natural teacher.

    This painting is remarkable! I love all your paintings, but this is one of my favorites. Painting something that appears white is tricky and this was a good lesson in painting negative space for those of us still learning. Thank you for the excellent tutorial.

    I always enjoy your demonstrations, but am especially inspired by your paint alongs with skills exercises. Starting small, and in graduated steps, reduces the anxiety in doing the larger work.

    Hey Rick. Thanks for the lesson. I took a couple of photos this fall of dilapidated farmhouses. Going in with a middle value shapes is a great idea esp the recessed porches. You've taught me how to approach these paintings and I am excited to try them. Thanks again for sharing your work and skill -- especially during the pandemic.

    Thank you. I learned a lot from this lesson. They are all good but your description of how to use cool and warm and direction of your brush stroke was very helpful. Please keep making videos. Thank you again and I hope to attend one of your classes. Have a great day!!

    Thank you again Rick. Very interesting details about direction of brush strokes. Your use of Paynes grey and cobalt for shadows is very effective. Minimal foreground details is also a good lesson for me.

    I had been waiting for a quiet moment to watch this video and boy you did not disappoint! As usual your detailed instructions are so valuable plus the kicker was it was more about value which is the area I need to work the most on! The lessons on value and warm and cool and the simplifying (suggestion of) is like having gotten a MASTER CLASS! This is a loaded tutorial! Thank you so much! Appreciate you sharing this with us!

    This would be difficult for me to paint but I learned so much. It's a beautiful photo (I love old farm houses and barns). However, all the light colors and the lack of brighter colors, except for the grass which you left lighter and simpler than the photo - it can be a little overwhelming. This is a most excellent lesson on value, shadows, defining areas, warm and cool colors, and quite frankly, a lesson in restraint. I also love what you said about taking advantage of your brush strokes to describe the corrugated metal roof, as well as the broken linear suggestions of boards on the house. It's a lovely interpretation.

    Payne’s grey is awesome. Sometimes I do whole paintings using Payne’s grey only. Or Payne’s grey, burnt sienna and yellow ochre and nothing else.

    Hi Rick, I just stumbled on to your videos, " Great technique! As a fellow watercolorest, I shall save them for referance. I can;t help wondering why you chose not to put in more detail in the forground in the shrubs and grass area.? I like the way you show the referance photo side by side with the art work!I My personal preferance is to show good detail and contrast. Happy painting to you!

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor

      Thanks for your comments Norsk ! I want the viewer to focus on the structure and that's where I want my darkest values. I didn't want the structure competing with detailed foliage in the foreground. There are countless ways to approach it. Depending on my objective, I often do put detail in the foreground. In a landscape I often try to have a dominant value (light,middle,dark) in in each of foreground, middleground,background. If you follow this link to my gallery, you will see some of the paintings where the foliage was my center of interest: rsurowiczart.com/winter-gallery/

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor

      Hi Derek, I purchased mine from Cheap Joe's Art supply in the US. They sell it under their own brand. Until now, I didn't think you could get it anywhere else. I was curious if Jackson's art in London had one similar, so I looked on their website. They have one they market under their brand that looks like the exact same palette to me. Perhaps they both buy it from the same manufacturer and sell it as their own private label. Here is the link to the one I purchased and a link to the one at Jackson's Art in London. www.cheapjoes.com/american-journey-cavalcade-porcelain-palette.html

    recommendations for a transparent palette color scheme?

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor
      @RickSurowiczWatercolor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Palettes are very personal, and there is a lot of information on the internet about various recommendations and individual's preferences. For a basic palette, I would suggest a warm and cool version of the primaries red, blue, yellow. I would add a reddish earth tone such as burnt sienna and a yellow earth tone such as raw sienna or yellow ochre. I would also add Sap green, a convenience color. In addition I would add Cerulean Blue. For me that would look something like this: Alizarin Crimson Quinacridone, Pyrrole Red, Ultramarine Blue, Royal Blue, Cad Yellow Light, Gamboge, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Sap Green, Cerulean Blue.

    Nice job. I always ask myself if some human interest might have made the piece more interesting. A boy mowing the grass or an old lady crocheting in a chair. Otherwise I like what you've done.
