Every time I watch one of your video tutorials, Rick, I learn something new. You are one of the best artists out there offering a detailed look at what it means to be a master painter. I am a professional artist, still making my living painting. I intend to try and learn to perfect my work as long as I can continue painting. That said, I am so appreciative of your willingness to share your talent with those of us watching from afar. It must be hard to judge whether you are making a difference, since you only have feedback like mine to make that judgement. Let me reassure you, I am positive you are making that difference. You have with me, and I know you are influencing many others. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts behind each decision. It was wonderful to see the painting come to life, and compare it with the reference. Your art is wonderful!
I watch all of your videos with much appreciation - all the little details teaching me so much and the color mixing. Thank you for all this help you’re willing to share
I am learning so much from you. I have not watercolored for over 20 years, so am learning all over again and catching up with new colors and new approaches. . .
I watched this all the way through and then played it again while painting along with you. This is the 3rd painting I’ve done with you and I thank you for helping me have some decent outcomes.
Beautiful. Thank you for taking the time to explain what color mixes you are using. It is so helpful to me, as a relatively new watercolor painter. I have learned so much from you already.
Have just discovered your site and so happy that I did. Your narration is spot on and very much appreciated. Many other sites show the process with background music, no narration and no reference photo, which makes for good entertainment, but lacks the nuts and bolts that beginners such as myself need in order to understand why things are done as they are. I’ve subscribed and will also follow your FB page, thanks so much, Rick.
This is so lovely! My sister’s husband and his family (along with my nephew) are dairy farmers in Michigan so I can really appreciate this landscape. ❤️
Your tutorials are so helpful. Am hoping you'll expand on the florals where you paint layers of branches and leaves behind the flowers using negative painting techniques. I keep trying them but find it the most challenging kind of painting. Thank you.
Thanks for another amazing tutorial. I've run out of adjectives. :) . I would love to see the originals more often during the video - they are very important I order to see how to simplify and not get bogged down with detail.
I'm not aware of that. I believe Legion paper is the distributor in the US, but the paper itself is made at the Lana mill in France. Here is the link to Legion paper's history of the paper. legionpaper.com/lanaquarelle/
Great work....I painted for awhile...won in 4 art shows, this makes me want to paint again. I love this style and always have. God bless. I subbed you.
Hi Rick, I love your art and technique. Thank you for sharing all with us, you very generous. I am new to transparent watercolor. Do you add a lot of water to the paints?
Is there any specific brand you could recommend? I have my eye on white nights and prima.. I am new to the watercolor world. Also what size of brush would be a good versatile one to buy for beginners?
As far as paints, while I have never worked with white nights or prima, it's my understanding that the lightfastness and tinting strength isn't quite that of the artist grade brands. I do believe they can be an economical starting point for the beginner. I believe most "artist" grade brands perform pretty well. I favor Daniel Smith, Holbein, American Journey, and DaVinci, however there are a number of well performing artist grade paints. I also prefer tubes, but pans work also. I think a minimum for brushes is to have a flat brush, at least 1/2" and a medium size round brush for washes. Also a "pointed" round brush for detail. This could be a small round or a quill brush. The worst thing you can do is try to do all your painting with a tiny little brush. I have my supplies listed on the studio page of my website. I hope this is helpful. Here is the link: rsurowiczart.com/studio/
Thanks for commenting Tony. I don't like to put too much emphasis on reference photos, since I encourage working from sketches and studies. I like to put the focus on design principles.
Absolutely gorgeous

Did Lanaquarelle paper sell out to Canson?
I'm not aware of that. I believe Legion paper is the distributor in the US, but the paper itself is made at the Lana mill in France. Here is the link to Legion paper's history of the paper. legionpaper.com/lanaquarelle/
Cheap Joe's is having a hard time keeping it in stock. Thanks.

You need to keep the reference photo on screen while you paint.
