Not if you read Robert Heinlein.
In the 1950s, his books were more like, "What if a young man worked hard to excel according to his abilities and within the system and culture in which he finds himself?"

_"Forbidden Planet"_ monster always creeped me out. The lack of effects and the unseen seemed to work in their film's favour. _"The Day the Earth Stood Still"_ with Gort, the silent sentry who could destroy a planet and just stood motionless for most of the film, or _"Them"_ , with the wide-eyed stare of the child, while the chittering sound was all around. Scared me senseless as a kid. Lack of budget or effects solutions makes for creative solutions.

Regardless of the fact that it's a futuristic lazer gun with unlimited shots (when necessary), I still like to see The American shoot at the Convincing Special Effect 4-5 times, then hurl the weapon ineffective at the Creation. At least he did keep the weapon pointed at everyone he was speaking to.
Also, any object that is named by the characters should have the words "space," or "star" as a first name. For example, Amonnia is interfering with the men's "space" instruments.

The foggy filter over the girl's close ups is too real. My father was so excited to show us Ben-Hur, but between it's 3.5 hr runtime (which felt like 8 hrs with the boring pacing) and the way the female lead was shot and directed we just couldn't do it. We paused it during the chariot race and said we'd watch the rest later and then we never did.
