I'm not a professional , heck I'm not even very good. But I love synthesizers ,and I have since the 60's. I loved switched on Bach and everything since. My ears searched for synths in every movie and record. Never did I think I could have one.I wasn't rich and I really wasn't a "musician". I was a sound guy and could do that pretty well ,but my music stopped with childhood piano lessons and always having a harmonica on the dashboard. But I'm a world class listener and music lover. Lately I have been very happy. I can afford really wonderful synthesizers... Roland's and Korgs ,and now I own a MOOG!!!!Thanks Nick. Easily Moog's best synth since the Model D. It's like a Model D genetically crossbred with an ARP Odyssey (paraphonic duophony, 2-pole filter setting) & a VCS3 (latching and looping envelopes, arpeggiator/sequencer, increased modulation capabilities, 3-pole filter setting). Not that it sounds like either of those 2 synths, but it's nice to know that some very criminally underrated functionality of those 2 synths are finally being considered by somebody in the modern synth market.
I'm binge watching old Sonic State videos and taking a shot every time Nick says "Right up into audio rates". Wassup evebody, howyal doin'?

I went over to Sonic Towers prior to this review being filmed and spent a bit of time playing around with it and I agree when Nick says it is a lot of synth for the money. I loved the fact that I was getting lost within it and that it felt like the range of possibilities was so vast and yet every sound it made was totally pleasing!

Very nice and thorough review of the Moog Sub 37's amazing features. It can of course only touch the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the capabilities of this amazing machine.
This is one of a few very good reviews I have seen on TH-cam that have swayed me to get one, regardless of how little I can afford one. I just think that I cannot afford not to have one, a sentiment with which I am sure many viewers of this video share.
By the way, the sound at the end of the video is absolutely amazing. Lovely patch.

I just rewatched to get a mental grip on the envelopes and lfos again, but just listening to this review is fun, every single sound this synth makes is heavenly.
I bought mine last week Nick, and your review really points out what I love about it so far. Having previously owned a Slim and Voyager, they are each their very own distinct animals, but the 37 is hitting the mark with my over-acute sense of analogue growliness. Love it. :)

BEST PART OF THE VIDEO. At about 7:00 he's demonstrating feedback/distortion/drive and he looks up at the camera with a subtle "Holy ****!!!" look. Super heavy and I totally get it. Intending to utilize this particular function a lot. Thanks for the demo, very helpful.

Well..show me one track where you can use a synth like this, besides synthbased techno? Completely overrated for me.
Martin Martyné It's just an analog mono(/paraphonic) synth. Of course it sounds electronic, it's a *synth*. You can make a lot more than "techno" with this or any other synth, techno is just one of the many genres of electronic music, not the only one.

I obviously missed that this was even announced / released thinking this was the 'Sub Phatty', but WOW I really like this! Seriously thinking of getting this one. Great review and very informative as always! :D

Just purchased mine, i was a Moog Prodigy and Taurus mk1 user for a long time in the early 80's the Sub 37 is class, build is awesome everything feels solid including knobs, and the keybed is far better than sub phatty, . only had it a week i have it midi'd up to midi bass pedals, sounds fantastic, i programmed a really close emulation of the Taurus.

I applaud you for having the bravery to soldier on your mispronunciation of "Moog." I still call Ryu from Street Fighter "rye-you," and anyone who corrects me gets a karate chop to the neck. One must be willing to bend on many things in life, but willful, stubborn mispronunciation is a matter of principal, and is well worth fighting for..

DB Pooper Yes im the same , i still pronounce Zangief "Zangeef" and till only say the last few years i realised . Oberheim is pronounced "Oh-ber-hime", "Not Oh-ber-heem", Doh !!!!!

I avoided any info or hype about this because I knew my GAS would go thru the roof... Boy I was right. That is one DAMN impressive synth. I could see me losing my Moog virginity to this! I wish the review was longer - I could listen to those sounds all day long! Great intro and outtro sounds!

I can always get a good opinion from Nick on any kind of synth gear. Which is important because I just bought a new Sub 37 for my 60th birthday. Having a Moog reminds me of my days as a concert goer during the 70s. I love actually playing keyboard synths but will also enjoy the seq and arp features. Now all I need is a big Leslie speaker to go with it.

This is the most enthusiastic Nick has gotten over a synth and that says a lot.
Top notch review. I really love this synth, and the interface is the greatest thing ever. Though I think I would find only having a lowpass filter a bit too limiting... That would be the only thing. But I guess that is part of the moog thing, I guess you learn to work with it, and it's probably quite versatile being multi-mode and all.

It's been out for a while. You get a download link when you register your Sub 37, and it works great. Stand alone and hosted versions.

Same here. But I got a Pro 3 instead, and I'm happy I did. Same price, same size, same overall concept... but vastly expanded sonic capabilities and somehow also easier to use.

When you threw up that matrix of "program destinations" my first thought was "AWESOME!" My second thought was "do I really have to use that tiny screen to set these?"
Since this has a USB out, any idea if there is software that would allow you to set the destinations using your computer screen?

Hey Nick, brand new to the synth world. Soon as I heard this I knew I was getting it. First question: Do you need amplification for this (like an electric guitar)? Or does the sub37 come with built in speakers? If it doesn't what would you recommend for amplification?

You do need an external amp. I just use the Fender Blues Junior that I use for my guitar and it sounds brilliant.
Great review Nick! I'm at the moment deciding between a Sub 37 and a MFB Dominion 1 as my first mono analog synth. Would you think it would be possible or in Sonic State plans to review one of those? I've been hours checking all the videos available in TH-cam, but it is still difficult for me to decide. I have tried a Sub 37 in person and I liked it, but the raw power of the MFB and its possibilities for future expansion into a modular are really tempting... Anyways, again congratulations... great review as always.
I would go for the Dominion. The Sub 37 will get cheaper with time and in case you want to interchange
Believe me I have been trying to get hold of a review unit since MESSE this year, but its proven harder than I would have hoped.

What a totally spellbinding review of an even more stupendous synthesizer. I was literally gob-dropping the whole time at what this little monster can achieve, but more importantly.. in what ways it accomplishes it. It's such a shame really that the music doesn't reflect the wizard like technology of today's golden comeback. Thank you Moog for all your hard work. It shows. Now.. how am I to get 12 'undred quid!
Beyond the fact that this is a sublimely engineered piece of synth sound equipment, its physical design is superb! The silky smooth wood end pieces contrast nicely with the brushed-polished, heavy gauge, die-bent, and creviced aluminum back, the quality plastic knobs, the amber push button LEDs-it's a jewel of a synth machine! It's a fantastic piece of kit (to use the oft-used Brit slang). Gorgeous design, phenomenal and luxurious sound, awesome instrument. A winner.

just got one and it is the business, could have built a modular but this has got more than enormous possibilities to keep me busy for a long time,
by by world while I get lost in synth world, just got to remember to press record now and than..
thanks for the vid! I got 2 questions. first: can you record live? that is: play in the sequence live with the keyboard while the the midi clock from external gear is running? and the second question: what happens when you switch between sound banks, do you loose the midi clock (from external gear)? by that i mean: when you chained the sub 37 as a slave to the master device and wanna play another sound bank while the whole thing is running, do you loose midi clock? Because obviously if you are a live act you don't wanna change to another bank and suddenly loose midi while you are playing live!

The sub 37 is destined to be a classic. It should hold its value very well. Think of it as an investment you can play. A true piece of art. I haven't purchased one yet but it's calling my name.

Hi Mike!Maybe you have heard that the limited edition is over now. Instead there is the Substiquent 37 and Substiquent 37 CV with some so called improvments. The thing is that I got my Sub 37 last monday. After some years of longing for it. Do you Think it was a bad buy? Musically yours Liselotte (And what's the sound in the beginning of the demo? One of the presets?
Can you give each of the VCOs its own separate envelope for volume and filter? so you could have a nice snappy click on VCO 1 but a long pad-like envelope on VCO 2 ? Or are you stuck with putting everything through the same envelopes?

+Kyle Morgan It's so amazing. I have the little phatty (which I love) but I think the sub37 is way more fun to play with. It's so full and breathtaking to play if you have the volume loud enough, nice n rumbly, a total beast :) It seems to stay in tune a bit longer? But I haven't travelled with it yet, and thats really when the phatty screwed up most. I bought the first one I saw in person, so if you're into this type of thing, I definitely think it's worth it! If I had to choose one over the other I would def get the 37 and if you're into Moog pieces this is definitely one for the collection!
is it worth the price? cuz i live in morocco and if i want to buy it, it will cost me atleast 2000$ shipping + tax :(
I don't own one, but from what I've seen, yes, It's quite possibly literally the only monosynth you will ever need
Why would anyone want to buy anything that can only play monophonic is beyond me. Perhaps if somebody is independently wealthy.

theeltea I've heard they are susceptible to temperature changes, like stage lights. But I thought they were very reliable overall in a studio environment.

about to get one, already have the slim phatty, thinking to go one into the other. the moog folks suggested going into the SP first, then out into the audio in of the 37 with a midi connector linking them. then i could run the SP into the 37 in terms of oscillators, etc. should be very fat
the knobs on the Little Phatty had a slight latency, is the Sub 37 the same?
Nick, can you tell us if the subsequent 37 is an as good choice ? do we lose anything on the subsequent ?
is the playing in the very beginng an actual song?
and if yes, what is it called?
Oh boy, makes me wonder if my decision to order a Dominion 1 was correct. Not really, but unless I finally get it at the end of the month I will from now on live with a little doubt.

Dear Nick, I know the tribute sub 37 is mono, but could it also be used as a kind of master keyboard so that I could use it also to play chords say with omnisphere in the DAW ?
Like as a MIDI controller? Yep, I use mine to control VSTs, my Korg Minilogue, and just about everything else.
Hearing about the discontinuation of the Slim Phatty I thought I'd come back and dream about the Sub 37... one day you will be mine...

Sub 37 hangs like a golden fruit, even though I have two Mother 32's and a Novation Circuit, Sub 37 sounds gorgeous and I will get it eventually.

What do you have the sub 37 hooked up to? Are you running it through any kind of preamp?
alot of moog gear seems too pricey for what it is but this does seem worth it...i might get one...looks like the best mono for the price to me...
