Hey Chycho, I'm a casual comic book collector and have learned a ton just from your collection and haul vids. I think my biggest lack of "knowledge" is in grading a book. I know you've stated a few times that grading is subjective, and I'd be interested in seeing you do a vid where you take a number of books and state your grade for each one, explaining why each book received the grade it did. Keep up the great content.
You and me both, brother. I've bought books that have been graded as NM and I would only grade them as VF or VF-, and I've bought books graded as only Good where I would grade them as VG+. I like your suggestion though and others have requested this as well. Tell you what, once we get the 4th reading set done - which is probably going to take us the remainder of the year since there are 30 more books to read... Hell Ya! - in 2018 I'll try my hand at doing some grading books. I'll need to do some research into this as well since I basically grade things at the price I'm willing to pay for them... that's my to go to grading system right now :)
I know you do not slab but I have a few in slabs and I use them as a reference for what a book should look like in regards to that grade. But even those are subjective. For instance, I have a book rated 9.2 and there is clearly a crease on the spine. For me, I just don't get how something can be NM- and have a crease. I chalk it up to ignorance and being too picky, i guess. Hahaha, 30 books. Based on your reading output so far, for the 4th set, I should be on the lookout for the grading video in say 2033? =)
haha... i know, I'm way behind my own schedule, just ended up slipping in a few unexpected sets, like the Personal Finance vids, those took me a while. On the bright side, I'm into my comics now and organizing as we speak. My reading space is now set up and in the next week or so I'm going to put out a comic book update vid and from there we are off to the races. Expect at least 6 to 8 readings with the next set... after that, some ASMR Math, specifically the Mathematics of Cliff Jumping which I had planned on putting out at the beginning of summer... oops, missed that time line as well... and then we should be back at reading comics.... that's my plan anyway, fingers crossed we get it done :)
I don't know if you ever had these in Canada/VS. But when I was I child when on vacation i didn't read romance comics but something similar to it. It were comic shaped romance magazines with pictures of real people (instead of drawings they used foto's) with balloon tekst etc. They were fun to read while on holiday. Great to see another comic haul video : )
Yes, they used models to tell the story. The magazine was called "Kiss". But I just checked on Google and found an image of "Star Wars" being done that way.
I just did a quick search on it too. They have a whole bunch of these, even batman from the looks of it. Never seen one in a comic book store or in Previews. Wonder if these are for the direct market or something else. While looking at the pics I actually remembered seeing one of these a long time ago too, probably in the 90's or 80's, can't remember what it was though.... hmmm... i wonder when they first started appearing.
I hope we are not competing on bids! I just got a bunch of DC romance books off ebay. I found out about them by collecting cover art from DC horror books from the early 70's (It's Midnight the Witching Hour, House of Mystery, etc...). I was impressed with the cover art and the hilarious dialogue on the covers. They are pretty scarce as well.
Oh man, I hope not either. I'm getting mine from a Canadian seller. Are you in the US? As for the books, they are pure AWESOME! Once I started getting these I couldn't stop. Good thing they are on the cheap side for now... some of them anyway. There are some that are selling for way way above any guide I've seen.
I know this is 2 years old, but you should be able to buy it now on whatever you want without actually paying, then send an invoice to the buyer. Been awhile since I used Ebay but I remember doing that before.
Great idea, maybe I do by listing a few books on ebay and going through the whole process... hmmm... now you got me excited. I haven't sold any comics on ebay since the early 2000's, might be time to do again. Thanks for the suggestion, Sunbeam, I'll see where it leads :)
haha... last time I sold any comics on ebay was in the early 2000's... regret every sale... lol... but the odds are when I do decide to sell some books again I'll probably do a whole set of vids on it, just document the whole event... so will do :)
That's a huge number of comics from the same seller in a single box! Some great catches in there! That SIX-GUN WESTERN # 2 in very nice mid-grade is a steal for $7! Western comics, like romance are often very affordable, but Atlas westerns are very sought after. I never got a decent copy of them at less than 10$ an issue. Romance is a genre that I want to get into more seriously at some point in the future. Once in a while I sometimes impulse-buy a DC title from the 60's or 70's from a seller I'm already buying something else from, just to mitigate the shipping costs. DC Romance had the most beautiful art! Late 50's and early sixtys had lots by my one of my favorite artist since childhood: John Romita Sr.! Gene Colan was another regular in DC Romances of the same period. This was before John and Gene came to Marvel to replace Ditko and Kirby at the end of the Silver Age. Other notable regular DC artists were Jay Scott Pike and John Rosenberg who drew the most gorgeous women! Charlton Romance are often cheaper, the art was not as good, but sometimes you could get more experimental visuals, and I suspect that one day we'll discover that they are more scarce than we think. Romance comics are almost ethnological portraits of their era, the clothes/fashion, the furnishing, music, art, fads, what was cool at the time...
I've actually ended up buying more from this seller over the years. I was getting some awesome deals from him and he was putting up a lot of Western, Romance, Horror, and War Comics which I love getting my hands on and while buying those I would usually grab as many books that I could if they were going on the cheap. As for the Romance books, I'm new to the scene in that regards, just started buying them a few years ago and love what I've seen so far. One title I've been gobbling up is Our Love Story from Marvel, love John Buscema and John Romita's as well as many other artists on this series. And the Charlton books, fantastic. We're actually going to be reading Love Diary #42 (1958) in Reading set #4... very much looking forward to that :)
Hi Chycho, I was wondering where do you get your protective sleeves from for your comics because I have a lot of A4 sized comic books and can't seem to find them anywhere, thanks.
I just buy them from my local comic shop, and I think these are the magazine size ones, yes? Just a note though, the bags come in packs of 100's but the boards are only 50's.
Not sure if you will answer this, but I came across some older comics and was wondering if they were worth anything in your opinion. some of them include Teen Titans #28, The Sandman #2, and The Mighty Thor #143. Thanks for the videos and keep it up!
The sandman 2 and Thor should get you something. I would suggest checking on ebay and seeing what they are selling for/listed for, and for sure estimate the grades, i.e., if they are in mint condition, fine, good, poor, etc. Here is a sample of Thor listings: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2322090.m570.l1313.TR1.TRC0.A0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=Thor+%23143&_sacat=0
Hey Chycho! Do you happen to have any information about the origins of the Valiant universe? Specifically, if one were to get into the reading of Valiant's works and wanted to start from the top. What would one start with? Much love!
Hi Niki, for sure, I know some, the question is, do you want to start from the original Valiant Universe from the 90's, or from the hard reboot from 2012, the new stuff (the re-launch where you don't have to know anything from the universe to start reading the book)?
chycho Well that..hm. I would guess that I'd sooner or later would like to read the original works (the 90s that is) but I am very fresh to the scene so. I don't know. Good question. In your personal opinion is one better written than the other? 90s vs 2012 that is? Thanks. :)
They both have some amazing stories, but how about this, let's go with the 2012 relaunch. Here are three completed series that are well worth reading. Here is issue #1 for each, you can get them in collected works as well, if you would rather have that I can find you the links, just let me know: 1) If you like humor, go with this, Archer & Armstrong (one of my all time favorites): valiantentertainment.com/comics/archer-armstrong/archer-armstrong-1-2/ 2) If you like superhero team interaction, Harbinger (this is really good): valiantentertainment.com/comics/harbinger/harbinger-1/ 3) If you like sci-fi with a barbarian slant (awesome series as well): valiantentertainment.com/comics/x-o-manowar/x-o-manowar-1/ And I hope you enjoy :)
By the way, Niki, since you said you were fresh to the scene, here is what I mean with collected works, for Archer & Armstrong you can get a trade paperback which contains the first 4 issues here: valiantentertainment.com/comics/archer-armstrong/archer-armstrong-vol-1-the-michelangelo-code-tpb/ ... or you can go with a deluxe that collects the first 13 issues here: valiantentertainment.com/comics/archer-armstrong/archer-armstrong-deluxe-edition-book-one-hc/ ... hope that helps :)
chycho Wow, thanks man! I knew asking you would pay off. :) My bad for going offline in the midst of conversing (time-zones)! I checked out the links you've provided, and I thank you. I do love the "original" comic book medium so paperpacks and collections don't really hold as much of an appeal. I guess that if I'm gonna do this I'm gonna do this right (lol..)! I just wanna finish off by saying that the reason I wanna dive into comics is mainly your videos. I never heard of Valiant until I found your channel. It really peaked my interest hard. And I love your readings! Especially the Book of Death series...wow. Been subbing on youtube for quite a while and I got a few bucks going out to you, via Patreon, every month. Proud to support your work. Been missing your live-streams like crazy but your content is great everytime I stop by so that doesnt really hurt. :) Keep doing you, keep having fun, and I promise I'll keep heading back here for more. :) Much love!
Thanks, Kane.... as for the seller, I would rather not drop names but one thing you can do is do an advanced search on ebay for "Completed listings" for some of the comics I've listed here and match them to the ones sold. Here is the link to ebay's advanced search (Completed listings box is towards the top): www.ebay.com/sch/ebayadvsearch That should do the trick easy-peezy :)
Chycho, is that a Technics 110 CD changer in the background? It looks like one that I own. I was very entertained by this video. Calmed me down before drifting off to sleep. Thanks for sharing, I wasn't aware of this genre of comics, the romance comics. Take care.
That's awesome! Haha, I just pulled mine out of storage, from the garage today. Haven't used it in years. BTW, you inspired me to chase some 60's Dell Comics. Mostly cartoon characters. Feeling a bit nostalgic, I guess. Keep up the great work, brother.
Just a quick thought while I'm working my way through this haul video :-) "Zot!" by Scott McCloud would be a very nice addition to your collection, Chycho --> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zot! I still remember Scott's webcomic with Zot! which was quite an exciting experiment at the time --> www.scottmccloud.com/1-webcomics/zot/
haha... it's already in my collection. I bought the full volume (omnibus) a few years ago, and I agree, a great read and has aged very well. The beauty of the book is, it's all ages so I do recommend it to those that want a classic comic book story for their kids.

chycho i know i already watched the one where you drew it with chalk on a sports field ground. but the question remains can you make one in an ASMR sort of way?
chycho is just a nickname that I picked up a long time ago. From what i've been told it does have certain meaning in different languages though, I think one of them is "uncle". As for an ASMR version of the Fibonacci Numbers creating the Golden Rectangle, I'll add it to my list and when the opportunity comes up I'll put one together. Cool?
Chycho I am super stoked to have found your channel. Your interests and passion for the medium really come through. Really looking forward to visiting my LCS and searching the 50 cent bins 🙏💚. So much great content✌
This guy is great. I love how happy and positive he is all the time, never a complaint. It's awesome.
whoa chycho drops a "Fuck" around 23:30 lol did not expect that
Was there ever a single romance comic cover where a woman WASN'T crying?

Quite a large haul! Very relaxing just walking through what you got and the quality of the comic itself
hehe... yup, this should carry me for a few months :)
I don't know if you ever had these in Canada/VS. But when I was I child when on vacation i didn't read romance comics but something similar to it. Great to see another comic haul video : )
No, I've never seen those. Were they actors that specifically modeled for these stories or were they randoms cut to fit the stories?
Cool, would be an interesting job to have.
Yes, they used models to tell the story. The magazine was called "Kiss". But I just checked on Google and found an image of "Star Wars" being done that way.

That it definitely is.
Awesome video!!!!!!
I know this is 2 years old, but you should be able to buy it now on whatever you want without actually paying, then send an invoice to the buyer. Been awhile since I used Ebay but I remember doing that before.
Great video. Just a thought you could maybe do a how to package a comic book when you send it to a buyer.
Great idea, maybe I do by listing a few books on ebay and going through the whole process... hmmm... now you got me excited. I haven't sold any comics on ebay since the early 2000's, might be time to do again. Thanks for the suggestion, Sunbeam, I'll see where it leads :)

Nice catch! I noticed it only during the editing process.... super cool. Their are so many gems in comics, got to love them.

What is the name of the seller on eBay that you got these comics from , great video by the way
Thanks, Kane.... as for the seller, I would rather not drop names but one thing you can do is do an advanced search on ebay for "Completed listings" for some of the comics I've listed here and match them to the ones sold. That should do the trick easy-peezy :)
Aww I understand and thanks , keep up the great videos
Will do, brother. Peace :)
Chycho, is that a Technics 110 CD changer in the background? It looks like one that I own. I was very entertained by this video. Calmed me down before drifting off to sleep. Thanks for sharing, I wasn't aware of this genre of comics, the romance comics. Take care.
haha... good eye, brother. It is a technics cd changer but only a 60+1, not the 110.... old school they are :)
That's awesome! Haha, I just pulled mine out of storage, from the garage today. Haven't used it in years. BTW, you inspired me to chase some 60's Dell Comics. Mostly cartoon characters. Feeling a bit nostalgic, I guess. Keep up the great work, brother.
Nice! I love the cartoon books, so much awesome in them... as for my technics, found it in the garage during the move, been years as well :)

I miss this Chycho.
This chycho is still here, we've actually had two comic book hauls in the last week during our live streams, I just haven't uploaded them here yet. Today we're doing a cooking live stream on Twitch and tomorrow we're doing a comic book reading.
As for the political content, the Canadian government and the bureaucrats attacked my family, and since I am not a person that cowers to bullies, I replied. Once we are free of these fanatics that attack us, try and take away our bodily autonomy, prevent us from working, from traveling, from going to restaurants, then i will ease off on the political content and stick to what we love the most, until then though, I have no choice but to defend the people I love. I hope you understand, brother.
Do you have birds, or do the bird sounds come from outside?
From the outside, I would never cage a bird (hopefully that didn't offend).
No offens taken : )
:)
how much do you think your comic collection is worth? im actually curious you must have lot of money there lol
I don't know but I have a lot of fluff and a lot of low grade books since i like reading what i get, so it's not as much as it might seem, and definitely nothing compared to a lot of collections i've seen.
Have you ever checked out Etanick's channel? It's a great comic book chanel dealing with grading comics and thoughts on the current comicbook market. He has these video's in several playlists.
haha... ya, I actually have checked out some of his videos and go back every now and again to get his take on things. He's a really nice guy and very very well informed. One of the best comic book channels that I've seen, very educational.
yes yes yes yes
Gotta watch guardians of the galaxy 2 if you haven't, really great movie. I watched it at metrotown on Tuesday though hahaha :P gotta go when it's cheap!!!
For sure. We're actually planning on going to a matinee, cheaper tickets and less people... win-win... hoping to watch tomorrow actually :)
chycho you won't be disappointed, very funny
Nice, after I left the previous comment, we went online and bought our tickets for tomorrow. Very psyched for it.
chycho cool man, remember not to leave before the end of the credits
can you make a video on fibonacci and the golden ratio next please?
I already have two videos out just on this, they aren't ASMR though, so be prepared, they go fast-ish:
"Math in Art and Design: Using the Fibonacci Numbers to Create the Golden Rectangle (Real Life)"
th-cam.com/video/57BpoTAId8s/w-d-xo.html
and
"Math in Art and Design: The Golden Ratio, Rectangle, and Spiral - Dirk Marwig (Math in Real Life)"

Let me know if you have any questions, and I hope you enjoy :)
chycho i know i already watched the one where you drew it with chalk on a sports field ground. but the question remains can you make one in an ASMR sort of way?
and what does your channel name mean?
chycho is just a nickname that I picked up a long time ago.
Awesome! ... and happy bin hunting, super fun, especially when you find new titles you've never heard of before, and those rare gems :)
