    Why you use the Arduino? Couldn‘t it be done with esp8266 Alone? You can program the esp the same way as an Arduino.

    I think, that you don't need an Arduino AND an ESP!

  • @DIYTECHBROS
    @DIYTECHBROS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    We love that you are using the ESP-01 :-) It makes us so happy when makers are selecting the "correct" parts, and not just "overpay" for more features when it is not needed. Thanks Electronoobs!

    • @marks47
      @marks47 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't want to over-pay, just use the ESP8266-01 and a magnetic reed switch. No arduino necessary.

    If you get an RTC w/ memory, you can stored the SSID list to the memory, reducing the ESP's wake up time -- and yes get rid of a the arduino -- and maybe put the whole project in a tiny case with a tiny momentary switch for a tamper detect to see if the case is ever opened, or if its ever removed from the door frame -- and maybe put a hall effect sensor on the inside too, pointed to the exterior of the door -- a common way to bypass this type of sensor is to just tape a neodymium magnet to the outside of the door frame -- if your 2nd hall effect sensor, or momentary switch ever detects anything you can tell your device was tampered with, or that someone was casing your home and you know its time to upgrade to an ESP32-Cam setup on your peephole, so you can see who is messing with your door & you could have that same ESP32 control a door lock solenoid&latching relay, check the hal effect sensors, AND power a display(epaper, so that it displays while everything is in deep sleep still) and an Pin Pad/Knock Sensor&NFC reader -- allowing key-less entry(Pin pad/knock sensor wakes up devices) and then reads NFC) -- and then toss some 18650 batterys on it

    A couple quick thoughts:
    - A magnetic reed sensor is much cheaper, easier to use, lower on power consumption, and is more reliable than a hall effect sensor.
    - If you use interrupts (rising or falling edge, based on your sensor) then you can wake the Arduino only and immediately when the sensor changes state, saving power and improving responsiveness.
    - PHP has an include function that allows you to dynamically "merge" files at runtime. This is a great way to split out password and database definitions to a single file that can be referenced by multiple other files. (This also means you can put that file outside of your webroot so that only local applications/scripts can read it, and not any web request.)
    - Consider only storing a hash of the password in the database. You then compute the hash from the submitted password provided by the device and compare that to what's in the database. This is how you avoid a database leak that includes raw passwords. (Salts are typically used here as well, although their effectiveness might not be as important in this particular scenario.)
    - Bonus points if you use just the ESP8266 and drop the Arduino. That can lead to a lot more power savings and increased responsiveness as the interrupt can directly wake the ESP8266.
    - MQTT is a much more power-friendly protocol, although this does pose a challenge with a webhost that doesn't offer a daemon. There are PHP client libraries available though.

    Hello dude.
    Let me ask you 2 questions.
    1, (others have said it) why not use only ESP?
    Maybe because you also want to be able to read an analog value?
    2, why is there always a banana on your table?
    Thanks for the wonderful work, keep it up.

    I'm kinda doing the same thing just with the esp32, node red, mqtt, raspberry pi, Google hub, with a hall sensor. It works fine except, can't figure out why after a couple of hours the esp32 looses Wi-Fi connection. Any possible suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It seems a lot of people suffer with the same issue with the esp32. I have openhabian running on my pi, with node red and mqtt. Esp32 has pubsubclient and ota library. Using a network monitor software that will notify me of issues. it seems that when it looses some pings it disconnects only part way from the network. It will not send mqtt and or email notifications. I still can ping and send ota updates. So it's not completely disconnected. It may have some thing to do with it getting disconnected from my mqtt server. I may just have to use wireshark for a deeper look at it.

      I can't help with your question but I think you might want to check the comment I wrote to this video. :) Based on your setup I'm guessing you're also subscribed to Andreas Spiess' channel? I too have all of what you described (besides Google hub) set up but for a "noobs" tutorial I think it'd be too complicated...

    • @ristomatti
      @ristomatti 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To try to answer your question, you could try to use another MQTT library? I've had good experiences with Async MQTT client: github.com/marvinroger/async-mqtt-client. The issue is more likely either in your code or perhaps unstable power. I hope this helps! (Unfortunately I cannot help you further but Wireshark sounds excessive.)
