Astromech Droid Lighting

- Astromech Droid Lighting is one of those crazy things we saw while visiting Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland. In the alley behind the droid depot, suspended in the air, were several abandoned droid domes used as lighting. So we figured . . . why not use them in our shop!

Love it.
And a full circle seeing as a lot of droid builders use lamp shades to make their domes! :D
Thank you Darren!!!! It's almost a right of passage now, LOL
Three battered and abused old R2 domes find new life in the Smuggler’s Room. Great backstory. Great execution. Loving the layers of detail you put into these lights. I stand, once again, I awe of your skill and your passion for a far away galaxy.
So very kind of you Deanna, thank you so much!
Here we go again. I work nights. Got off at 6, got the youngin ready for school and got him there. Get home to go to bed finally. Nope. New Smugglers Room.....
LOL, so sorry, but thank you so much for watching after a long night.
I've just started my first droid build. Its gonna be an original Astromech droid, made using a broken vacuum cleaner that one of my neighbours threw out. So it won't be a replica droid, but rather a droid build in the style of Star Wars.
Love it!!! Custom builds are the best.
I think another really cool concept would be to show droids being put together and/or a droid R&D shop. Having various components with blinking lights as they are being assembled and/or tested.
Great ideas Eric, love that concept.
Another amazing build! Just what I needed today, when my mood is kind of low!
So glad to hear that, hope we made it a bit better for you.
I love that vintage looking cloth wrapped wire. I use it in my steampunk lamps and rewiring vintage industrial task lighting from old machines. Interesting build.
Awesome!!!! I love the look of it too!
Ima a magician and this sings to my soul. My study where I make my smaller props, practise my routines and device my more insane ideas is part Victorian theatre Dressing Room, part fairy grove and part steampunk inventors workshop. Your video sings to my soul :)
Thank you Dean, very much appreciated!!
Building a story and or character is the best starting point. It really allows a direction flow to the project for sure. Fantastic Video!!! 😃👍❤️🔥
Thank you very much!
“I like having a little bit of story around me”. YES! Brilliant Brian and Carissa 🎟
Thank you my friend! Thank you very much!!!
Brian, you never cease to amazing and inspire. I love this build. I have a similar plan from something I saw at Disney. They have a medical droid wall sconce light. Can't wait to make it happen.
Thanks for all your inspiring work. Keep it up.
oooh!! I must have missed that medical droid light, sounds awesome! Thank you for the kind words!
Love it!! Great story, great build, from a great storyteller. Also, great minds must think alike I just used those same rafter vent panels for a ceiling application in our bathroom build!! It must be canon now lol
HA! Yes! I've had a pile of them in my shop forever, and this seemed like the best place to try them out.
Wonderful touches to the corner of the shop. Now you just need a probe droid hanging by a net!
YES!! Totally!!!
Thanks for all your tips and tricks!
My pleasure!
it's really cool that you even did things behind the eye of the droid
You are the Best. You inspire me here in France.
Thank you so much for the kind words. We really appreciate it!
For wiring with stranded wire, a little trick when you're tying into a screwdown connection using a "hook" shape like you used for the light wiring. If you're having issues with strands poking out, use your wire strippers to cut a small ring of material to slide to the end of the exposed wire. Keeps everything tightly bound, and helps stop the wire from fraying/splaying over time ;)
Thank you for the tip!!
Definitely an idea I will be implementing in my Media Room... Awesome.
Sweet!!! So glad you liked it!
Boss those were awesome , it been cool if you could of thrown some colored glass in some of your squares or your panels on the side or the top part of the dome to give you color affect , but still a great idea !!!
Thank you! That would be a cool effect.
SO cool!!! Love all the detail, looks like you stole them straight from a Jawa!
LOL!!! Thank you Lisett!!!!
This really is a genius way of repurposing what you have into something else and adding even more theme to you space. Your only limited by your own imagination. Solid build!!
Thank you Miguel!!!
Really enjoyed the build... I have a tentative plan to do at least one astromech dome light in my room as well, really liked how cool these looked at Galaxy's Edge.
Fantastic!!! Hope yours turns out great for you!
Great film. Shop looks like a movie set. Awesome job. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic job my friend!👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌😉👍‼️‼️
Thank you Ed!!!!
Brilliant, dude. As I said on ig, I had a similar idea when I saw pics of galaxies edge and created my own with a jakks pacific bb8 dome and an ikea lamp.
That was kitbashing level 9000!!
🤣 thank you!!
You know, a stucco treatment on that OSB would give the place a nice extra little outter rim vibe.
Light them domes Up!😁👍🏿
😃
Very cool. Would love to have these in my house
Thank you!
I love that idea!
Thank you!
Another great video! Thanks for sharing your projects and ideas for all of us to see and be inspired by.
Thank you for the kind words!
Very fun project nicely executed.
Thank you!!
I really like the look of those. Great job!
Thank you!!
Epic as ever, what a brilliant idea!
Thank you!!!
Awesome!! Love the dome lighting!! Great video!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Can’t tell you how much I LOVE this! On a side note. For someone who’s never done electronics ANYTHING. Are there good resources for learning this skill at an elementary level?
Thank you!!! You should visit Programming Electronics Academy. They have a fantastic program learning electronics and programming.
Amazing 😯
Great stuff! I really loved the attic insulation tip. I have never seen them look like that before, although I usually shop at Lowes (Habit). They do usually have different "things" @ Home Depot. Thanks for video!
I would bet they carry those Provents there too. If not it might be time for a Home Depot run 😜
@@TheSmugglersRoom I only ever saw those pink almost styrofoam crappy looking ones....Ill check again those look really nice and I'm on a look out to spice up my walls a bit. Thanks for feedback!
Blooming marvelous mate.. love me some droids!! Shared 👊👊
Thank you my friend, really appreciate it!
The interrogation Droid would make a cool looking light. Keep up the good work love your Channel
Indeed!!!! Wish I would have thought of that when we made ours LOL
@@TheSmugglersRoom Nothing stopping you from making another one ;P
As they say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!" Or maybe it was another juice lid in the eye...
Amazing and Inspiring as always, Brian! They're wonderful!
🤣🤣🤣 you know me, have to find a place for a juice lid. Thank you much Scott!
This was really great. I liked all of the differing techniques you used to achieve differing broken droids.
Thank you Wayne!!!!
Man, I love that. I loved seeing details like that at Galaxy's Edge too. Hmm, in the spirit of making something out of nothing, have you seen the droid R1-J5 aka "Bucket" from Star Wars: Resistance? I think something like him would be right up your alley.
Thank you! I need to check out the R1-J5 Bucket for sure. Thank you!
Great decoration for a nice space. Greetings
Thank you very much! It's fun to be working in the space for sure.
REALLY like your videos. Keep them coming...
Thank you John, if you keep watching we'll keep making!
I don’t know why R2 domes excite me so, but to make lamp shades out of them….brilliant! (Like 5000 lumens brilliant. Hehehe) if I were to do my shop like this, I probably would never leave it. LOL!
They totally excite me too, and I can't get enough of them!
This is amazing!!! Thank you
You're so welcome!
Awesome stuff as always Brian... Backstories never gave it a though.
Never got into cosplay so I miss out on some of the vision of the project. But I don't do that kind of projects...
I guess I need to look at things a bit different... :-)
Thanks for the video!
LLAP
Thanks Bruce. Even if you never got into cosplay, you can always add a little “story” to your projects. It makes it fun!
Brian your work is simply inspiring the back story the delivery how you tie everything together is amazing great job !!
Thank you good sir!
That’s really cool! The details and depth with the story elements are what really make the work pop!
Thank you Doug, very much apprecaited!
I'm new to your channel and it's so inspiring and awesome to see all the wonderful and inspiring things you create. Please keep on inspiring me I absolutely love watching your channel and creating my own projects.
Thank you Keith, we really appreciate the kind words! If you keep watching, we’ll keep making!!
awesome idea!
Thank you! Cheers!
17:39 - That music sounds a bit like the old Alive From Off Center Intro circa 85’to 88’.
LOL, nice!
I almost fell over when you pulled out the pro vent. I just got done installing some of these last week and had some left over and thought “what would Brian @ smugglers room do with these?”
🤣🤣🤣. Awesome!!!!!
Just watched.. lol just 2 weeks ago I bought a stack of the HD vent baffles for 'bulkheads' in our bridge room
AWESOME!!!
Hi I loved this video.... just one thing... I think you need to paint the boards... the construction board look ruins it a bit.... if you do it in an off white grey you can add other colours on top and it will bring a bit more light... or glue aluminium foil dull side onto it the paint it... you will get a cool metal effect and still easy to attach to.... love the heads lighting idea!
LOVE THIS! nice work!
Thank you!!
I enjoyed this one. I love the aesthetic at Galaxy's Edge and I've been wanting to do some of it at home. You've done a great job of capturing that look and feel. What a great space to work in.
Awesome! Thank you!
Looks awesome man!
Thank you!
I Love it!
Thank you
Every time I watch your videos I get inspired with new ideas for projects. Thanks and keep it up!
Thank you so much!
Should I be worried that after the droid uprising, my skull will be in demand to light their workshops...? 😱
BTW, I really like that each is slightly different.
LOL!!! . . . Maybe 🤷♂️
Dude, I've been looking for some Star Wars lighting for my kids rooms, and couldn't find anything I liked. Turns out, I needed you to show me I should have made them myself all along! :)
Whoohooo!!! So glad we could help!
It is always such a joy to see that you uploaded a new video! You are a great inspiration, Brian!
I appreciate that! Thank you so much!
@@TheSmugglersRoom you are welcome and so sorry for misspelling your name before I edited my comment now :/
@@lukehomestead no apology necessary Tom, thanks for watching!
Another fantastic idea and well executed! These really turned out great!

OMG!!!! Amazing..... you put bits of plastic together and they become an iconic feature, I put bits together and they look like.......well just bit of plastic stuck together. Hummm......yes I want one!!!!!!! (Yours not mine)
LOL, don't be hard on yourself . . . just keep building! ;)
Such a contrast with the OSB-lol
LOL, I kinda like the mix 🤣
astrologically speaking Brian, your shop IS in the outer rim somewhere . the milky way is near the edge of the universe ^.~
I LOVE THAT!!!! Thank you!
Hello… I am very new to your channel… I also do a lot of prop building and dio making…I think I heard you said you sell the domes for the R2 units… I love the lighting .. I saw it also at galaxy’s edge and I thought that was the coolest thing ever..I looked in he drop down for a store but I didn’t see one… did I miss it some how?
Thanks so much. Unfortunately right now we don’t have a lot of items for sale on our website. We are planning a new run of product in June.
great video i want them!.. :)
🤣 thank you!
Here's An Idea Take a HD movie projector & a R2D2 head with a Blue tooth speaker & merge them together....
Where can I get the casted parts of the droid dome from it looks amazing
This is amazing! I just started playing around with making molds, and now I’m curious how your dad did the molds for the R2 heads
We need to do a little video showing the molds for the dome, it’s an incredible mold, it blows my mind!
Another stunning project! Where do we get the droid heads though?
Thank you! They are on our website if you want one.
These are fantastic! Does Mr. Junkyard Jedi sell these?
Hi Gage, we have them on our website if you want one!
Id like to buy three depending on price
I just realized you used the GoNK droid hardware to hang these Droid domes/lamps, right?
Been, not so patiently, waiting...
Thank you, hope it was worth the wait!
I need to know where to buy the domes 😀
You can get them on our website. www.thesmugglersroom.com
I was thinking would it be possible to make an r2d2 aquarium?
why not!!!! LOL
I'm visualizing these lamps hanging from the ceiling of a workshop inside a jawa sandcrawler, or in a grimy cantina in the Outer Rim, like the one on Savareen in Han Solo movie.
BTW I have spotted your DD3 unit in the background and an early concept for BB-8 has come to my mind, I think it could be a great project for you:
instagram.com/p/CEPOe28DZKb/
Yes! That was the idea Charly! I’ll check out your link!
How much is a 2/3rd scale astromech droid kit?
You mentioned that your Jedi of a father made these domes. Does he still offer them for sale?
on occasion we do, yes. We have them up on our website from time to time.
:08 "Use it in a completely non-traditional way"...Did he make a bong out of it?
Nope, no bong
When is the desktop lamp version coming out? 😄😉
It already did!!! th-cam.com/video/u54r9GXvRow/w-d-xo.html
@@TheSmugglersRoomI haven't been watching your videos since then, hence why I didn't know. My bad. :(
@@TheKnightsShield I was totally kidding, that was an excited response not meant as a negative one. We are so pumped you are here, thanks for watching!
@@TheSmugglersRoom It's all good, mate, no worries. I didn't take it personally, only just that I should have looked through your channel to see if you had posted it before.
@@TheKnightsShield ok good deal. Text is always hard to convey the emotion. I was just excited we had a video to point you towards.
Where these full scale astromech domes or where they smaller ?
They are actually 2/3rd scale.
Have you ever thought about doing Indiana Jones style props?
Absolutely!!! So many ideas, and we need to jump on it! Is there a specific one you would like to see?
@@TheSmugglersRoom Well, I have seen videos on bullwhips, so you could make one of those. But with your guys' creativity, I think you could pull off designing your own artifacts and mystical muguffins!
@@TheSmugglersRoom also if you need inspiration, take a look at the Indiana Jones Adventure ride at Disneyland! Indy's office in the line has lots of good props and everything feels very lived in
5:02 cloth wire :/ ...
You don’t like cloth wire?
@@TheSmugglersRoom bad experience w/ cloth wire appliances...
Looking at all this Bryan...: th-cam.com/video/QaUtJKH7mls/w-d-xo.html Do you really think one day, this workshop corner will be fully given a larger story?
I certainly lay hope so. Eventually we want the whole shop to have a better story
I’m gunna track down those 3 people that didn’t like this video!!😠😠😠😮😮😬🤔😂
LOL!!! Thank you!!!! . . . Not sure what we are doing wrong, but it happens every video 🤷♂️
These are not the droids I was looking for.
🤣 . . . It happens 😉
