I loved Phil. I loved the Phil Zone. I had the privilege of seeing the boys perform over 300 times from Minneapolis in 1971 through Chicago 1995. It was the time of my life.
8:30 People dont really seem to look at a bowl of cherries the way they might have used to, before my time, and thats a real bummer. Again, sending you so much love and light from Tennessee. You tell the best stories, man. As a 24 year old that never had the chance to experience a real Dead show, you make all of the magic come to life, through your stories and memories. Keep on keeping on Steve. It would so amazing to have the privilege of meeting you someday.
You are a great friend Steve. You were a part of something so very special. Thanks for sharing your memories. Mine are from the audience side, Since 1970 💃
The last photo of Phil was a classic. Almost a Mona Lisa type smile, but the Macho Male version. LOL.. Thanks for sharing those stories Steve, we all miss the man, but the music is still there. Gratefully Deadicated. RIP Phil Lesh.
“Phil was game that day!” I love the stories of the L miscalculation on the Europe 72 tour. Whoops! Donna’s stories are classic as well. Hiding under the piano… Rest in Peace, Phil! Love you guys! Thanks Steve!
Got it! I haven’t smoked weed in a long time but if I ever do, it will be at 5:50pm. And from now on, the new 4:20 will forever be 5:50. Spread the word.
I remember seeing Phil play 7,17,2001 pine knob sitting on the lawn with my dad and they played box of rain as an encore at the very end of the song a massive down pour erupted. Such a great moment. ❤
Phil was amazing. When he was promoting his book, Starching For The Sound, they stopped in Philadelphia, when it came to Phil autographing my copy, I quickly leaned over and kissed the back of his right hand and said, "Thanks for all the great music, Phil" He smiled.
Big Steve! So glad we got to hear this tribute a fine musician! We will hear more tributes about Phil tomorrow on the Big Steve Hour! Phil is now living in the Land of Zonk!
Thank you, Steve! Phil was always a good, kind gentleman to any of us who worked around him (you were too, ya know). I am sorry for the loss of your friend and teacher. You take care of yourself.
My first show (12 years old) Free Concert Golden Gate Park in 1972, also the show in 1975. How could I not be a deadhead for life. Thank You Phil. Peace and Love.
Beautiful people and kindred spirits. It’s great not knowing someone personally but knowing their spirit. That’s what made the whole entirety of The Grateful Dead what it was/is.
You're such an amazing person Big Steve, I love how you remember a story for everyday on the road with them. Phil was one of a kind, you could tell he was just brimming with intelligence and wisdom and like you said, he was game. He always seemed to be smiling in a way that said he knew something that you didn't, yet, but you would and when you found out "oh boy, watch out!"
Phil is the only band member that ever appeared to me in my dreams (multiple times) and I miss him already. Ever Reddy Kilowatt has now embarked on perhaps his most amazing trip ever!
Well said Steve! I spent an hour with Phil in San Diego (mid 70's) when he was hangin' with Dallas, who was a tight friend of a friend of mine... just a regular, good guy; letting the girls reunite, and making small talk with us guys... there's a little more to this story, but I'll save it for the memoir.... I think the pic of him with Bob & Jerry's backside was from the Lindley Meadow benefit with the Jefferson Starship... what a day! I wound up meeting a couple of the Angels back by the vans backstage; so when I climbed the stairs to the stage, they waved me up, and I got spend some time watching and listening from behind the amps... It was one of those summer days where the fog rolled in thick and heavy above the trees; and I remember remarking to Phil about those really beautiful handmade, leather gloves with the sheepskin lining that he had on to keep his fingers warm before playing... he gave me a big smile, and something like that look from that last pic you shared... missing him, Jerry, Ron, and so many others...
Steve - thanks so much for sharing those sweet memories! Phil's presence... Kind of laid-back but something super ~heavy (smiling) floating there as well... :) Love that little interlude from the Grateful Dead movie - closeups between his face / bass / knobs! This Phil Zone, for sure! Such a positive/saving experience for me. Always thankful and grateful, will miss you always! Andrew
All things must pass. It's life. You have the memories. 🌹Hold them close. Thanks for sharing.🌹I always loved the photo of the band, crew and family members all headed to the old country on the back cover of the booklet of Europe 72.
gonna start usisg the Philphrase: Ten to Six in the Land of Zonkfrom now on. Thank you Big Steve for Phillin us with all these phun Lesh pics and phacts..(big grin) Gonna miss him and every bass bomb will mean even more (if possible)
Thanks Steve. I'm glad I got to meet Phil and Bobby Peterson in the San Raphael office..late 70's?. I was there to talk with someone about artwork, waiting in a room when Phil and Bobby walked in. We talked for a very good hour or so. Very kind people.
Steve Parrish's genuiness always moves my heart. We are from different generations and while I get to meet wonderful people I almost never experience this kind of genuiness from my age group. Sometimes from the older people I experience it. It makes good friendship and even just simple communication so joyful. Thank you Mr. Parrish!
I got into the Dead in early '74 and saw them for the first time that summer at Roosevelt Stadium. And while I heard Jefferson Airplane on the radio, I really wasn't all that familiar with Jorma & Jack...yet. Recently I learned Jack taught Phil to play the bass, which of course makes perfect sense. I was also very much into the ABB, also seeing them for the first time just a month earlier at the Nassau Colliseum. Listening to all of them you just know that Jack, Berry and Phil were all cut from the same cloth. Fantastic players!
Steve, thank you for sharing all your tales. I am fascinated with the history of all thing’s Grateful Dead related, so to hear the stories first hand from someone who was there in the thick of it all is so much fun. Let their be songs, to Phil the air!!
Great to hear Big Steve speak on Phil and the old days ! I did a modest tribute for Phil as well on my channel. He did have a good, rich, and long life ✌️
Thanks Big Steve and for sharing these memories! We are all carrying Phil in our hearts wherever we go. Peace & blessings from Germany ("we are everywhere"🥰)

Thanks for sharing your stories❤ I just put up a video of P&F 5-29-1999 Calaveras with Warren, Kimock, Merl,Molo and Donna Jean on my channel. Friends shot it for BGP and never seen it circulating. Believe I see you working behind Phil Steve? Can't link it because YT deletes posts with links. My channel has many Phil shows, not monetized just freely shared. Love ya Phil❤
My late husband discovered the Grateful Dead when they came to play Queens College in the mid 70’s. I still have his Jerry Garcia bootleg t-shirt. The Dead didn’t even have their own t-shirts back then.
Big Steve. One time Phil and Crosby were going to play together for some benefit in Oakland. We met at Front Street. I don't remember any rehersal. David asked me to help out. It was the day after Jerry was a no-show at his batchelor party, I remember hearing that mentioned. I remember you taking charge, and making everything easy and fun.
I loved Phil. I loved the Phil Zone. I had the privilege of seeing the boys perform over 300 times from Minneapolis in 1971 through Chicago 1995. It was the time of my life.

Meeting Phil in downtown Eugene summer of '90 with his wife at the market. He offered me some grapes. 10 to 6 forever!
Phil was amazing. When he was promoting his book, Starching For The Sound, they stopped in Philadelphia, when it came to Phil autographing my copy, I quickly leaned over and kissed the back of his right hand and said, "Thanks for all the great music, Phil" He smiled.
I'm constantly starching for the sound 😂👍
I know my heart hurts I can't imagine if he was my friend for 55 years
Thank you Big Steve… may all beings live with peace and love in their hearts 🫶🏼
A release of GGP 1975 would be epic as well you know. Hang in there man.
