Thanks Jim....I will be working with deeper windows a acquired at a yard sale. They are 6 inches deep, so on the exterior part of my bay I will need bigger boards.

How did you determine the angle for the top and bottom?
Really should use the tite seal wrap on the sides and bottom of the window frame. Didn't you feel you need any support below and no insulation below or above? While an interesting watch, it's not up to any national code. With little additional effort it could of been an excellent install. Also foam is not a water proofing material, it is designed for air infiltration, a good caulk would work much better for moisture.

I normally use that spray adhesive in a can spray it on the window to glue the 36inch wide from padding rolls like you can get in moving and shipping area. But cover the window in that or do the same using brown paper and put a couple to three layers with the glue in between. We're switching the way you run it from vertical to horizontal. Good way to store it too especially with that in the phone helps keep it from breaking by accidents.. note always carried the last straight up and down it'll break otherwise when it bows if carrying it flat.

I helped my dad take a similar one out once. We got it out with no problem without it breaking, but I remember thinking it would be a great idea to cover the whole thing in some sort of heavy duty tape first, so if it broke, the pieces might stay together. Anybody ever do this?
Yep! Or the window-cling film...I often tell people how the window cling films can help with window glass safety in case of glass-breaking disasters.
There are rolls of purpose-made plastic films for covering glass windows to move them.

Jim, without support at the bottom, did the window sag since the install?
I'm looking at doing the same thing for my lake cabin but not sure if I'll do it without support. BTW.. Thank you for sharing your work from start to finish. Amazing that you can balance the work and filming at the same time with no extra hands.
Sam Armor absolutely no bottom supports are needed because the soffit boards are fastened directly and firmly to the rafter tails and then the bay window frame is attached to the soffit boards which are a full 3/4". The only way the window can sag is for the whole unit to pull away from the soffit which won't happen and also the sides are firmly attached to the side walls and the top and bottom plywood is firmly attached to the header and sill. You could certainly add the 4x4 or the bottom sculpted plywood to the bottom but in my case I didn't want to because we have full plants growing under the window and I like the free standing look. I can assure you that if you build this correctly like I did you could lay a 400 pound person in the bay with zero problem.
Start to finish? You have some strange idea of what "finish" looks like. Also, this might be okay for a cabin up in Alaska where you're only likely to ever entertain some already drunk Inuit, but anywhere else in the country that you want it to have a nice appearance it's a complete garbage job. Look at the underside of his soffit! Plywood heaven under there.
Nice Video! I am preparing to bump out my dining room and create an enlarge bay window effect. Of course, footings are goon down to the new extension....hahaha. Anyway, what type of saw is that in your shop? Did you switch out the blade?

I'm stuck in a house that I have to diy repair myself. Once in while I think about nice things to do besides the mandatory repairs. A bay window would be such a nice thing to have. Can I just hire you? haha I'm in Virginia :-)
Must live in a very temperate climate if you didn't need to insulate that install. I did notice you supported it from the top but I wonder it the centre styles as you called them are going to be able to withstand enough weight to hold the bottom up and the added weight of the 400lbs man you mentioned in an earlier comment.
What size was the rough opening? Do you happen to know the dimensions of the windows you put in?

You should of used some sort of waterproof caulking under the window lip .sika are something like that .

Jim Howard and caulking and sealing your new windows in. A sill pan will only trap water and rot your sills if you don't build the assembly right from the start.

Nice job but applying some tape on the entire surface of the window inside and outside would save you some clean up time and accidents.
Is that the, pull trigger and poke (spring optional), real light framing/finishing model nail gun?
Yeah it's the 2024 "no nailer no header" super gun! Makes everything so easy, headers? Who needs them! Nailer and bracing? Waste of time and effort! Finish nailer 2½ inch brads and you're in there!
Just curious, why no tyvec or seal before installing windows? I am thinking of doing this, but I was always under the impression that you make a seal before installing the windows especially around the box?
I dont think the guy has any plans to sell. I was wondering the same thing but I appreciate his self motivation to do it himself instead of hiring a contractor who is only going to milk the job for every penny and take forever to do what this guy did in an afternoon. Or take off with the money and disappear.

How did you determine the size of the windows for that opening?
it's kinda like... figure out where your studs are and how big you can make the opening. On an old house you'll need to screw with the header so you can support the roof weight. In Seattle we have no snow load. A chainsaw and sawzall are key and then punching into the wall and not too far avoiding suspect wiring... I guess years of carpentry helps and working on Old Houses too makes it kinda easier... and then a great way is to lay out some big sheets of cardboard and drawing on that too... and in this case I didn't want the window to extend past the roof overhang of course, which is the soffit.

I am Like number 420. This was interesting to watch compared to one made to install into the framing. I could have used a little more detail where the 2x2's are and if they were angled for the side windows to attach to nice and flat.
Yes, angled 2x2's. Old house this is, 1946. I went as wide as I could between existing OLD studs and cut out. Squeezed in a header and sill. Bought appropriate windows.. some measurements for sure. Made a cardboard sill pattern and preset windows on pattern in shop till they fit exactly for my liking. The videos don't show my two 4x4 angled supports I put underneath at the end.

Very cool to see a bay window install from scratch....tho, a few things were a wonderment...
Why waste that lovely big glass?!? Use it for greenhouse, or a solar air heater, or a storm window! We used recycled windows mounted on a 3’ airspace frame-out from the original single-pane aluminum windows. That resulted in zero condensation in winter...not even most common double-pained windows can boast that!
Also...are you in a very mild climate? Most locations require a bunch of insulation both over & under the bay-out. And supports under, because during the life of most bay windows, Someone will use it to sit on!
Glass was history. Foggy. And HEAVY. And caulked in very firmly. Easiest to break out.

Great video. Very informative. But please learn how to edit the videos better. U can speed up and certain points, or cut some things out here and there. The internet has a very short attention span, u could cut the length of this video in half. Just some tips
OMG who ever fitted this didn't think about the future "repairs" a frame with some a2 stainless screw would do it 20-30years later easy remove and even use same screws again if you know how to work with them this is totally crazy to me!

over half the cost was ate up in nails and screws. i have built hundreds of bay windows and never seen one constructed like this or use as many nails and screws as this one.
