My first attempt at a backflip was on cushions and I landed with my hands and feet. You just have to watch a few videos on you tube and then think about everything you learnt and just full commit. Commitment is the key. Just keep practicing and one day you will get it.

I don't know if this'll help but I also have one weird tip to get your confidence in doing a backflip. The first thing I did was when everytime my friends and I go to a pool party I always do back flips eventhough I don't know how to to them on land. And as I got comfortable with the feels of being upside down. I start to do it at the side of the bed. Not on the bed or not or a soft mat or sofa. I position myself for a backflip beside the bed and do them and land on the bed on my stomach or on my knees(but somehow you fall down from the bed but you can catch yourself) And when I'm comfortable doing it beside the bed I go to a soft mat or the mattress from your bed and actually try to do a full backflip. But also remember that when practicing on a mat, don't start jumping off a back flip on the matt. Start on the floor(stand directly beside the matt) so you won't get use of having the matt help you jump a little higher. Hope this helps too

I first see the sides of the pool if it has those kind of things where you can stand on em with the water just a little above you foot of legs. So if I go to a pool with that kind of thing. I do back flips with leaning to much backwards which is not really a good thing but it's kind of another transition for a back flip. But if the pool has clean sides or corners. I do the normal kind of back flips so I learned many variations of back flips which can make me do a backflip without too much leaning or moving back or a back flip where circus people do when they do backflips above some people. thanks for your words :)
imporylem your problem is actually pretty common to those trying to learn a backflip. Just try to keep practicing on a matt or on a spring floor and try to jump more vertically than horizontally.

And one thing I could think of to motivate you and to stop you from thinking of your fear to much is by practicing backflips with musics or whatever keeps your adrenaline high. Because Im a dancer so what I did before was I just put on some music, started dancing to warm up and I kinda started jumping in place like what chaddy said and then I kinda got to do a standing backflip. hehe. hope this helped. Goodluck in learning how to do the standing backflip again. I mean I gotta be honest, I used to do good at backflips but since I stopped for like more than a year, I doubt that I could do it again. lol
Here's how I got over the fear... I learned to do backwards dives into a pool then I tucked more and did a backflip into a pool.. Then I ran inside my house dried off and took the mattress off my bed and did them on that . Once I was good doing that I did them from the mattress onto my carpet. Then I did it on a really thin mattress then on the carpet . Now I can do them wherever. For the people who think they will land on ur head... U have to suck really bad to land on ur head. For me backflips are easier than front flips just more scary

Awesome tutorial! Here are some tips for progressing (the way I did it) 1. Learn a sideflip and when you master it, throw your arm behind you instead of towards your legs, it'll make you do half of a backflip to get used to the feeling. 2. I got over the fear of backflips by swinging on a bar and letting go when I went upwards with my back facing the floor, this required me to do the backflip to prevent hurting my back, and landed succesfully because in the backflip you can spot the ground easier than during a front flip. 3. After you're feeling comfortable with it, you can try it on the ground, if you got the movements down (at least number 2), you won't fall if you jump correctly (like in this tutorial) Good luck everyone :)
I landed my first backflip on a trampoline on my second attempt, go to a trampoline gym if you have one near by and practice jumping into a foam pit, once you have that down, try on a trampoline, the try on the ground with a mat

I want to thank you for making this video. It helped me do a back handspring the first day I tried it. I could do it all along but it was just the fear. I want to become a free runner so I decided I might as well decide to learn to do a backflip. I can tell I'm almost there and this is the video that got me there.
I gave this a try, and I think that if you can find a place to practice in with foam pits, you're going to have a lot easier time getting over the fear of flipping backwards.

Hey guys, i can tell you that most people overcome fear by first doing one hand backflip as it's shown in this videos, and this is absolutely the most powerful way to get used to it, i've learnt to backflip in just hours in this technique. please try that. Hope it helps!

Well,you may start doing a good sideflip.Then you have to go jumpind sideways and then trying to fall turning 90º so you stay looking to the dirrection you came of.So,do a sideflip and go rotating a little till you finally fall rotating 90º.Then you do the same,but trying to jump a little more backwards.Eventually,you will find yourself doing something like a backflip running.Then just try to do it going slow before jumping and finally you will do it in the place. Thats my progression,hope you try it!

Guys, please try it on mats or trampoline first and most importantly, FOCUS when doing any flip. I landed on my head yesterday and ripped my eyebrows because my knee came crashing down on my eye, had to do 6 stitches. It wasn't my first time doing backflips, I nailed about almost twenty clean backflips but I was tired and did not focus just one time, I let my reflexes take over. As I took off, I realized I didn't get a good footing, but it was too late, my reflexes told me not to go all the way back and hence did not complete the flip and landed head first. Thankfully it was a gymnastics springboard floor. So please guys, even if you can do your backflips well, like Lucas always says, BUT YOU GOTTA FOCUS.

Gamer's Of All Kind Make sure you jump up, this guy jumps at too much of an angle and throws his head back. You'll get a lot more rotation if you can focus on something at your eye level. Fortunately I was taught by one of my friends, who's a gymnast, and it's amazing how much rotation you lose from throwing your head back. If you're still having trouble, message me:)

Its actually pretty easy once you get over the fear. Do it first on a trampoline without bounce, and then I did my first one into water on the beach. Its good to have something soft beneath you, like sand or pillows/pads and now i can do one perfectly.

I find that that starting low on the ground is probably the best way to start as the idea is to roll backward and then progressively go higher but naturally.
Even if you land wrong, your neck won't crack on the grass. You'll instinctively tension your neck muscles to prevent your neck from cracking, and just experience some muscle ache for about a week, and it will be hard to move your head during that time. The problem is is that you'll create backflipphobia, because you'll remember the pain from falling on your neck.
Please don't listen to him. I have a friend who broke his neck on a rese mat, which is the second softest thing other than a foam pit. If you are going to try new flips make sure you are ready for them.
best way to practice a backflip is in water or a trampoline lol I practice backflip in water until i can do it on land after water then sand then hard ground its the safer way I think

The first time i did it was of an edge into a pool, then i tried it of an small edge into the sand. Just try it on something soft and be confident and you'll be fine
Please for any of you who want to try this... Don't do it on hard tile. if you can, make sure you can backflip off a diving board, trampoline etc. to get over the fear of flipping backwards. Best idea before you do it on flat ground is off a bench into grass/sand.

I taught myself to backflip at a lake by my house. started off in waist deep water and did 5. concentrate on jumping as high as possible then pulling knees up tight... then move 10 feet closer to shore and do 5 more... then move closer to shore and do 5 more, etc, etc until I was doing them on the sand/grass. after that, call it a day but make sure to do them every day after that until they are SOLID
It took me one day to do a back handspring. So if you just do his suggestions repetitively then you will eventually get to where it's second nature and there will be no problems

Its actually pretty easy once you get over the fear. Do it first on a trampoline without bounce, and then I did my first one into water on the beach. Its good to have something soft beneath you, like sand or pillows/pads and now i can do one perfectly.
I've once tried a back handspring and completely landed on my head like a pencil. Nothing happened, I was sore and thats it, guess I'm lucky

Pigmie, can you make a video full of real-speed and slow-mo backflip attempts from different angles? That would help me a lot, since I've gotten over the fear but still fail to land my flips.
I cant manage to land on my feet without falling forwards.
that means you have to jump higher and/or bring your knees to your chest sooner
You're doing your backflips too early into your jump. wait until you have a bit air then whip/flip.

I find that that starting low on the ground is probably the best way to start as the idea is to roll backward and then progressively go higher but naturally.
I'm scared I'm gonna lam wrong and crack my neck.
Even if you land wrong, your neck won't crack on the grass. You'll instinctively tension your neck muscles to prevent your neck from cracking, and just experience some muscle ache for about a week, and it will be hard to move your head during that time. The problem is is that you'll create backflipphobia, because you'll remember the pain from falling on your neck.
Please don't listen to him. I have a friend who broke his neck on a rese mat, which is the second softest thing other than a foam pit. If you are going to try new flips make sure you are ready for them.

best way to practice a backflip is in water or a trampoline lol I practice backflip in water until i can do it on land after water then sand then hard ground its the safer way I think
practising on a jelly land isn't bad either :P . But your way is smart. XD

The first time i did it was of an edge into a pool, then i tried it of an small edge into the sand. Just try it on something soft and be confident and you'll be fine

Please for any of you who want to try this... Don't do it on hard tile. if you can, make sure you can backflip off a diving board, trampoline etc. to get over the fear of flipping backwards. Best idea before you do it on flat ground is off a bench into grass/sand.

Yo PIGMIE! Can you do a roundoff to backflip tutorial? Please and thanks! I know how to roundoff and I'm getting really high but I'm stalling on transitioning it to backflip.
I taught myself to backflip at a lake by my house. started off in waist deep water and did 5. concentrate on jumping as high as possible then pulling knees up tight... then move 10 feet closer to shore and do 5 more... then move closer to shore and do 5 more, etc, etc until I was doing them on the sand/grass. after that, call it a day but make sure to do them every day after that until they are SOLID

It took me one day to do a back handspring. So if you just do his suggestions repetitively then you will eventually get to where it's second nature and there will be no problems
