Anybody who's listened to Happy Sad Confused for years will know how much of a big deal this was for Josh. Having Coppola on in a good conversation mode, Bram Stokers Dracula is so often mentioned on the Podcast. It's great to see it 🔥Also on a side note I refuse to believe Josh is 48.
That comment about the audience not being in the same key as the film was not only a great observation, but clearly struck a chord with Coppola. Thats gotta be a great feeling as an interviewer. Loved this conversation
Josh, congratulations on your brilliant interview with Francis Ford Coppola! for him to express an interest in you becoming a filmmaker must’ve been a thrill!
I think a lot of people don't realise that this movie is self aware and satire mixed with very real and honest feelings. It reminded me a lot of George Lucas' directing and how he wore his heart on his sleeve, whilst the background was operatic. It will definitely age well. A modern classic!
Francis, you deserve a round of applause solely for having the courage of producing such a movie on your own and facing hollywood eye to eye. Megalopolis was just released in Brazil and I'm anxious to check it out.
I feel like the marketing team should've pushed a "We Dare You To Think. Experience. Immerse. And Question This New Film That Defines CINEMA." It kinda pushes people who are hungry of 70's filmmaking with modern technology, of a film that makes people wonder about the human experience in todays world and the parallel of the past, ie the Roman empire. Basically, we as humans are a limited species in which, we are the creator of innovative technologies, but we somehow never learn from our mistakes.
Good interview, GREAT interviewer. Josh, this is my first time seeing you, and I want to say that you're such a good host, I need to watch your whole catalogue now. It brings me a lot of joy to know I have hundreds more interviews of this caliber to listen to!!
bytheway, the playfullness, the way to be different, like this movie did, also the 3x 9:16 apsect ratio, is just great, and so needed in times of netflix & co.
Breaking the 4th wall- in theatre the audience is looking in on the world through the set where a literal wall should be. Breaking it means speaking directly to audience and acknowledging their presence.
Our Castro theatre in S.F. showed Capra's The Bitter Tea Of General Yen in its big box format decades ago..Some flick. Old Yen saying, " I could have impaled you" to Barbra was pretty bold for the 1930's... .
Coppola has made a new film that has confused, questioned, excited, breathless new film that really defines CINEMA. As everyone has forgot, film is a directors medium in the visual art of cinema. I'm so glad he got to make this film. Watch, 10 years later, this film will be considered one of the greatest films ever made, similar to Apocalypse Now. The best part of film is when a film transcends time and grows through generations. You have to watch this film more than once to truly get it, when it talks about society, government, ideologies, themes, the human experience, and so much more, similar to Apocalypse Now. It just makes you think, but if you are more into linear films, you will NOT like this film. lol.
@@antilocust Yeah... the cool aid, or I just understood what he's going for and you didn't. And mind you, they said the exact same thing you said about Apocalypse Now, and you're in that spectrum of trashing it, instead of just saying, 'I didn't get it'. Let's see how it hold 10 years from now. I'm pretty sure people will not care or forget about Deadpool vs Wolverine or Everything Everywhere All At Once, but will have cinema theory, or political conversations, and Megalopolis will be the film students watch to analyze today's society and cinema -_-
@@ValentinaTheCreator this movie is a stupid person’s “smart” film. History is filled with challenging, intellectual, artful films that actually work. This ain’t it.

42:15 ----- Yes, the world is essentially rich people profiting off of the misery and suffering of the masses. We are a despicably sadistic species. Even this movie, like all art and entertainment, is capitalizing off of the masses' need for escapism as a kind of painkiller to counteract the emptiness of our morally and philosophically bankrupt lives.
excuse my bad english, i really have to say, critics, media, always kinda infilitrated by a narrative. Especialy films with a deep meaning, also political and i really think MEGALOPOLIS is a highly critical movie about the illness in the system. When movies recall names like "human-family" and mention "some few rule us all", this some conspicuous words. The few, didnt want us to have those seeds, floral in our brain. Great movie, will be honoured in 10 years, when the Corridor of opinion gets wider, hopefully!
Coppola is absolutely one of our great all time filmmakers. I love his passion to want to have made this movie. It just sucks that everything that has come out about him and his behavior on making this movie doesn’t quite look good. From his quotes, to the actual video of him harassing the female extras. Not a good look for someone of his status.
A 7 second clip, where he kissed an extras hand, and held on as she walked away. He was thanking her, you fool. Stop feeding into this nonsense and lies. He has done some stupid shit, but I don't believe a word of this "harassment" and it has been verified some extras was looking for clout.
And have you took the time to actually look into said allegations? That’s all they are currently and they’re being disputed by other actresses who were on set. He’s an old Italian man in his 80’s who just lost his wife after over 60 years of marriage. I don’t think he put all the work that went into this film just to be able to grope extras.
A Better Help ad 18 minutes in?! In 2024, you're still taking money from a company with literally dozens of lawsuits in the last few years over selling private mental health information of users?! Disgusting.
Love FFC !!!!, but let me tell you Megalopolis is a DISASTER, WORST FILM I EVER SAW and thats the reason why NON STUDIO wanted to produce it !!! It is the sum of incomprehensible philosophical scenes that have nothing to do with each other. The female performances are mediocre and the male performances are forgettable. Obviously some snobbish critic is going to say that it is a masterpiece, but if this film was directed by an unknown it would not have even been released.
It’s such a privilege that we’re alive in a time when we can still enjoy a new long form interview with a lucid and articulate Francis Ford Coppola.
Meh, his daughter is better
@@xathyrus7043 While I like Sofia's film, she is actually incredibly banal in interviews.

I hope I’m half as sharp as Coppola when I get older. What a great interview.

A great interview. But man I really wish there was more discussion on Megalopolis. I want to hear more from his brain about the film.
Omg by far the best interview for this movie. I dont know u but i am so happy for you.
