Travelling without spending money | Simon Dabbicco | TEDxCrocettaSalon

  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Many people believe that travelling is something that only a few of us can afford. I’d like to prove not only that money is unnecessary, but also that travelling without money is more fun.
Simone was born in 1987 in Rivoli near Turin. He studied classics and soon became passionate about music and arts. After graduation he enrolled at Dams, but he then later decided not to finish his studies; in 2007 he managed a company of car furniture for about a year. In 2008, he sold the company and started travelling to Ireland, England and Scotland, a trip that changed his life completely - up to the point that he now defines himself a nomadic traveller. In 2011, Simon and his friend Roberta Panero set up a three months trip from Turin to Portugal; they managed to do it without spending any money. When in Turin, Simone composes music and volunteers for the Italian Red Cross. He is co-author of the blog www.viaggiareconlentezza.com.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Incredible, limiting belief shattering speech. Thank you so much. I literally cried. The conviction you communicated of being free from needing to work for money and living a meaningful life of love, adventure, and curiosity spoke straight to my soul. I can truly say you have set off a spark that will begin creating enormous momentum to drastically improve my life to soak in that beauty of that world we live in.
    Thank you.

Just go anywhere, obviously the nearer you are to your home country the easier it will be. But just buy a ticket somewhere and take your passport and go. There are many ways to travel, you can spend a lot of money or very little like the guy in the video. Personally I usually work in the countries I visit, but I have travelled without working also. But just choose a country that attracts you, save some money. Buy a ticket and go, it is cheaper to stay in hostels and a great way to meet other solo travellers. There are many websites you can use to find hostels in locations all over the world. A good website is www.hostelworld.com but there are other websites too. Or if you want to spend less money you could use couchsurfing.com which is mentioned in the video. I've never used it but I think I will in the future, I've heard it's a great experience. Good luck with your future travels.

I like to come back to this video every few years. I have backpacked more than 1000 days in my life. I am getting close to 100 countries, hope to get there in the coming weeks. I travel to save as much as I can. Hundreds of hostels over the years. Couchsurfing when opportunities came up. Taking local transportation everywhere. Hitchhiking when transportation is too expensive. Will eventually travel to every country in the world.

+nor waja I am gonna do this! I don't know yet if I am going to hitchhike, but we can just plan a little bit more than normal and go! And if we have a partner of travel it's easier. There are a lot of sites that provides contact between travelers (Backpackr and so on)

      Nor,
I don't know where you are from but do not let ANYTHING stop you from traveling. If you are concerned about your safety, learn how to defend yourself. Not Karate but using all of the "illegal" moves that they don't allow. Learn survival, a skill you can market on the road, as you learn these you will gain courage.
Most people's regrets are not of things they did but, the things they chose NOT to do.
      Happy Travels,

+IndaNor waja Also you can learn some tips. Read, read, read about it :). One of my favorit tip for hitch-hikking is carrying toilet paper and lighter or some another things to fire. If there is problem, you can fire the paper and throw it at back of car. Driver of car loves always car more than to hurt you soyou have time to run out of car cause he will stop and take care about car. You will have time to call police. Stop another car for help. Run far away to forest. Whatever is possible to do in that time :)

+Megan Balut I actually highly recommend you don't skip the motivacional part. It is the best of the speech IMHO.

I agree. The best thing about this talk is when he describes our society. I can totally relate.

Some of the points are good, but the general philosophy is quite basic and naive.

He fails to mention things like he was do work for food at a place that was trying to make a profit also he rode in cars that people had to pay for with money they earned by working at a job. And there had to be people who went to work and made cars for a company that has to make a profit or cease to exist and then you have many unemployed people. The whole doing something for free only works if other people are going to work for money to buy the stuff that he is using for free. He mentioned doing dishes. Well unless he was washing them in a stream then somebody is working at the municipal water place making sure that clean water makes it to the sink he's using and on and on it goes. I am not a fan of capitalism at all but people have needs and those needs require money. I'm sure if he ever needs surgery he will be glad for all of the expensive medical stuff that will keep him alive. Unless of course he has to hitchhike his way to hospital and dies while waiting for a ride. And no I don't wish him harm he seemed like a very nice person

That's not the point. The point is to overcome the belief that without money we cannot live. He did a social experiment to prove that money are not necessary. It doesn't prove anything but it gives hope to the possibility that -through a shift in values- together we could actually run a society based on exchanges and sharing instead of money.
