@@loumorrow0903THIS! Joe Walsh is/was the only tolerable thing about this self-indulgent tedious mess of a band. And that solo is classic and, again, the only redeeming part of the song (and TBH, the band's catalog, save "Take It Easy," which had to be mostly Jackson Browne's doing.

I’ve always believed Hotel California is a metaphor for the music industry. They draw you in with the beautiful women, drugs, jewels and money. Then young naive artists sign their lives away. You can check out any time you like but you can never leave. Your contract gives them possession of your name, likeness, voice and art in perpetuity throughout the universe.

You don’t pause or ignore the greatest guitar jam in music history. It was always good but when the already legendary Joe Walsh joined the band (the one without the double neck guitar) his genius turned good into greatness that famous bands still try to replicate to this day. Those two men, with Walsh adding a spark created an aural masterpiece I could listen to forever and you don’t even hear it.

The spooky vibe, the KILLER musicianship, the gorgeous background vocals, the excellent drumming, and the iconic dueling guitars. You can always look up the meaning later. Here is what the band said the meaning is behind the song:
While there have been many theories that contemplate what the song represents, the Eagles' band members have revealed in multiple interviews that the true meaning behind "Hotel California" is a commentary on the hedonism and self-indulgence of America.
“It’s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about,” Henley said in a 2002 interview with "60 Minutes."
In 2005, Henley further explained the meaning of the song to Rolling Stone magazine, which placed "Hotel California" at no. 49 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
“We were all middle class kids from the Midwest," Henley said. "'Hotel California' was our interpretation of the high life in L.A.”

Well Glen Frey's explanation was far simpler "We decided to create something strange just to see if we could do it. Any meaning it has is unintended rather than hidden." In other words just nonsense like some of the Beatles tunes. I kind of think Henley's version was just to give an answer to shut everyone up or at most that was the meaning he had behind it. But in the same interview with Frey he said "The atmosphere of a man in an unfamiliar rural setting, unsure about what he's witnessing, mimics - says Frey - the 1965 novel The Magus."

I can still remember my Geography teacher playing this song to us on a VHS and TV in class, why Geo you say, I have no idea he was out there, we even watched the America's cup in his class, he brought the TV in and everything, he tried to explain this song to us, then, I don't think anyone understands this song straight off. but its still amazing today, Eagles are in the top bands of all time!

California was the center of the hippy movement... peace, freedom, sex, drugs. 1969 was the Woodstock festival and pinnacle of more socially relevant music... but by the time this song was released in 1977, the hopes of the baby boomer generation were disappearing. Instead, lives of excess were what they ended up striving for with greed for possessions, big homes, and cars. He's definitely feeling trapped in the current situation and wants to go back to the earlier hopes.

Don Felder (double guitar) wrote the music to this. Don Henley had a tape of the chord progression playing over and over on his car deck. He left the Whiskey A go-go one night, drunk, and drove to Needles CA to find some peyote. On the way there, he wrote these lyrics. Passing by lots of Teddy bear cholla, and lonely desert hotels, he came up with a story about someone losing their innocence. Going from adolescence to adulthood, and knowing once you do, you cannot go back. The Eagles have MANY LEAD SINGERS, depending on the song. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner (their biggest hit Take it to the limit) or Timothy Smith, and Joe Walsh all sing lead on songs that have hit it big. Like the Beatles, if you cannot sing or write, you are not good enough for the group. Ringo Starr, Roger Taylor (Queen), Phil Collins, and Levon Helm (The Band) all were singing drummers.

Don explained the story behind the song to him, and said he was amused at the wide varieties of interpretations the song had developed over time. According to the source, The "Hotel California" is actually, L.A. itself. The song and album take you on a trip though the music industry in L.A. in the late sixties early seventies, when agents and studios controlled artists like puppets. Back in the late sixties, 1969 to be exact, there was a major onslaught of artists being signed left, right and center, and artisit at the time were often known to basically "sell their soul" to a record company executive in order to get a recording contract. Many times these artists were given little if anything for their music, and thus ended up basically a victom to their love of music. Just imagine the scene at the time, it's late 60's, you are on your way to L.A. to strike it big with dreams of glamour and fame...and you basically are prepared to sell your soul of you have to to attain it. I must admit, when I first heard this explaination, I was a little skeptical...but trust me....listen to the WHOLE album again, start to finish and keep this definition in mind when you do it. Every song ties together in one big story, finishing off with the Last Resort which gives you a clear summery of the whole album and idea. I don't deny that drugs and addiction have a lot to do with the lifestyle and results of the quest for fame. All I ask is to keep an open mind and think of "The Hotel California" as L.A., and you may be surprised.

They toured w/the Eagles on their Hotel California tour. He said he’d never seen a more miserable group of people in his life. Then, we caught them on the Hell Freezes Over tour and the ex said it’s the first time they looked like they actually enjoyed playing together. I caught them about 11/2 yrs ago on their 50th anniversary tour of their Hotel California tour. Glen is gone, but Vince Gill does a great job filling in as does Glen’s son Deacon. I will say that from the 60’s -early 80’s was the absolute best time for Rock n Roll. It’s still all I listen to. BTW, I saw an interview w/Don Henley and he was asked what Hotel California is about. Every time I ever saw them in concert (and I saw them a lot), Henley was the drummer. I NEVER saw him standing at a mic. Where did you see him do this? I'm fascinated - and who was drumming? Very cool

@@SAM-dg3vd Exactly he's the drummer not the Lead singer...Yes he sings a lot songs but so does Glen Frey

@@SAM-dg3vd Their tiny little reunion tour sometime in the 90's, Don sat on a stool just like everybody else. I have no idea who was on the drums but Don still sang this song while doing nothing with his hands. There was a joke spoken into the mic by one of the guys, about 'the band never broke up; we just went on hiatus...for...fourteen years...' lol

The response, “we haven't had that spirit here since 1969” is referring to the fact that in 1969 it was no longer legal to drink alcohol while you were in a drug rehab program. Prior to that you couldn't do drugs but you were allowed to drink alcohol. The Hotel California” is a rehab.
the Steely knives are needles. you stab with them but you can't 'kill the beast' meaning you can't quench the need. you can Check out any time you like, but you can never leave.. meaning you can stop doing drugs/alcohol/sex/women/materialistic needs but you'll ALWAYS be an ADDICT.
It is widely regarded as one of the band's signature songs and has become a classic in rock music. The lyrics of "Hotel California" are metaphorical and open to interpretation, but the song is often seen as an allegory for the dark side of the American dream and the music industry.

Don Henley most recently said, during the History of the Eagles documentary. They had a meaning to it, for them; but what they wanted the world to perceive was that the song was “a journey from innocence to experience.”

Glen Frey passed away in 2016 so you'll never see the Eagles again. He was the heart of the band. I was blessed to see them perform live and the show was amazing. Joe Walsh had beaten his addiction problems and all the old tensions within the group had faded away with maturity. Listening to them sing a song a capella in perfect harmony was the finest ear candy I ever had. We won't see their like again because American bands aren't willing to work as hard as they did to achieve perfection. I look to South Korea and Japan now because that kind of work ethic still exists there.

OMG...Joe Walsh...Dude, man is a genius....but LOCO!!!! If you want to know about how to trash a Motel room...this man has EPIC stories....Serious. One time he lit an M80, and flushed it down the toilet. Yes he was high, yes, he was in the top floor because...it's the freak in' Eagles at the height of their fame...dude also threw a TV from his hotel suite...don't know if that one was true but that man was absolutely a disaster for most of the Eagles tour. Still love him though! He has my heart. I'm a softy for crazy dudes.

I love when BP decided that Hotel California is purgatory. Yep it sure could be. That's the thing about these more "abstract" lyrics that you seem to get hung up on sometimes. They are whatever the "receiver" makes of them and why they can speak to so many people anywhere anytime.
