Magnifique, magnifique! He improvises in the Largo and it works. His own mother was a student of Karol Mikuli, a teaching assistant of Chopin. Therefore, he knew what he was doing. As far as Tony Tommasini is concerned, he told me in a telephone conversation, regarding historical performance practice, that if Sarah Bernhardt were to get up on stage today, she would be laughed out of the hall. The man was denied tenure at Emerson College, with a DMA from Boston. What does that tell you.

A superior vision. The subtle low tempo in the fiesta movement and the aristocratic refinement makes a remarkable difference respect yo all the previous recordings I had listened before.
As always he was a genius.

The great pianist Miecio, friend of the Poet, leading exponent of Crepuscularism, Guido Gozzano, who dedicated a poem to him! 💗

Vermutlich die Chopin nächste Spieleeise! Edelste Auffassung, pianistisch subtil, eher elegisch denn grandios konzipiert. Einmalig als pianistisch-musikalischer Zugang. Exquisiter Geschmack und Zurückhaltung. Keine Temeperamentslösungen. Text noch nie so klar wiedergegeben, erlebt ohne jedes Selbstvordrängen. Einmalig!

There is no chance anyone could direct you now, in April 2016, to other historical and modern performances as I guess no-one of you returns here for the second time, let alone reads what new has been written. But if you made a constellation of great pianists Chopenistes in Heaven, you would certainly place Mieczyslaw Horszowski there but also Jan Ekier, Artur Rubinstein, Witold Malcurzynski, Dinu Lipati, Boschniakovich, Egorov, Ashkenazy, and others. But here is a SuperNova born in 2015 Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, and you better remember her name, which already causes waves and motions equal to the mightiest and influences people in all continents: she is Ms Kate Liu. She places herself between Horszowski, Ekier, Hofman and Idyl Birret, and Maria Jao Pires, takes the best from each in turn, and adopts to her own personality, sensitivity and to her absolutely phenomenal left hand, and her rubatos, tone, sound, dynamics and structure from heaven, everything, and here you are: every minute she shines stronger and plays yet better and better. Ms Kate Liu, ladies and gentlemen, is the Artist to watch, listen and remember.

As I write this in 2020 I'm happy to report that Ashkenazy - while essentially retired from playing - is very much not yet in heaven yet!

shut up.... agreed for the Mozart but his second recording of the Goldberg's just before his death are sublime

Gould: "great in Chopin, but his Goldberg's were awful" - who knew that all of us were so wrong all these years??? ;-)
