The trains are small by American standards because the loading gauge, ie tunnel and platform clearances are much smaller here. Loads are also nowhere near as great as US freight trains. But speeds are higher. The track and infrastructure are owned by the government but ‘train operating companies’ run franchises while rolling stock is owned by yet another set of entities: leasing companies. It is a very complex set-up! European Union money enabled much of this particular part of the network to be upgraded with better track and a very advanced in-cab signalling system
