- I collect the star Mario Wings to the Sky without collecting any coins. This video has been sped up at certain parts to minimize repetitive actions for your viewing pleasure. Note that I have a cheat code activated during the video, which shows how many objects are loaded at each moment. This cheat code doesn't alter the gameplay; it is just to assist me in cloning objects, especially when I'm doing the hat in hand glitch and can't even see what I'm cloning. Feel free to watch it to gain a sense of what objects are loading / unloading and when. And if it ever looks like I'm standing around not doing anything, it's probably because I'm waiting for some object to load or unload, so you can watch the OBJ counter to look for the change. Also, some objects activate a null bug (NULLBG) when they load, which you will see in the bottom right corner. This is because they initially spawn at the center of the course, which happens to be out of bounds in Bob-omb Battlefield.
I originally thought of trying to do this back when I did the A Button Challenge for Shoot to the Island in the Sky. But after a bit, I just gave up on it, thinking it was impossible. Later, Gaehne D. commented on one my videos [ • SM64 - Find the 8 Red ... ], specifically asking me to go for it. This inspired me to try it again. And after a lot of testing and brainstorming, I ultimately devised this strategy. So thanks Gaehne D. for motivating me to go for it again! This strategy makes use of several glitches, listed at the bottom of this description. It was actually really fun to have to use so many, which is also a testament to the difficulty and complexity of pulling this off. I especially love when Mario is holding a clone, hands free, with his hat in his hand -- that's 3 glitches at the same time!

The core dilemma to collecting this star coinless is that it's nearly impossible to collect each secret without also collecting the coins around it. For each secret, there is a ring of 8 coins around it and a singleton coin practically inside of it. The hitbox of the secret is mostly contained within the hitbox of the singleton coin. But a tiny portion of the secret's hitbox extends above the singleton coin. This is why the secrets can be collected coinless in the star Pyramid Puzzle in Shifting Sand Land. However, for the secrets in Bob-omb Battlefield, this tiny portion of the hitbox is contained within the hitbox of the top coin of the coin ring. In other words, the middle and top coins of the ring entirely contain the hitbox of the secret. Here is a video to demonstrate: • Secret and Coin Hitboxes . So how do I collect the secrets without collecting the coins? Why, I move the coins out of the way! Note that the secret and middle coins are loaded always, and so they cannot be cloned and moved elsewhere. Only the top coin can be cloned and moved, allowing for a narrow space to collect the secret coinless! Interestingly, over 90% of the video is dedicated to just the 5th secret, since it requires advanced techniques to reach it. I actually came up with the idea for a clone centipede back when I was doing the A Button Challenge, but there was never a practical use for it. In general, a clone centipede is when you release an initial clone, then iteratively release clones by being knocked back by the previous clone. In this way, there is always exactly one active clone at a time. Using this method, you can make a clone somewhere where you initially couldn't, and can then use this last clone for a greater purpose.

Well, if you know anything about video games, or even how computer programming in general works, that is rather obvious; however, how exactly the mechanisms and glitches are affecting the way that objects spawn--and more importantly *which* glitches affect the memory and spawning of *which* objects--would be great commentary.
I'm not at all saying you're wrong, I think that most people understand what you have said, but don't quite understand how these glitches and exactly what compounds upon each other to achieve the desired effect of limiting the memory of the game to prevent the spawning of a coin.

This is what happens when you got an n64 + mario as a kid but mom never bought you a second game.

Too bad he couldn't access blue luigi.
To get blue luigi you need to have super smash bros and have mario fall off cool cool mountain along with the orphan penguin.
Switch the cartridge to super smash bros before you fall down and you will access a secret test level in super smash bros with, you guessed it, mario. It's literally just a slope. After 42 minutes you will see a penguin suddenly appear.
You now need to switch to pokemon stadium. You should see a pikablu.
After that, run pokemon red on the pokemon stadium cartridge, and there should still be a pikablu.
Go through the game with only the pikablu and make your pikablu's HP equal to 77.
Then, you need to boot up super mario 64. Depending on the attack stat of your pikablu, you will have to wait up to 5 seconds for the game to work properly. You will have an amount of stars equal to the defense stat of your pikablu.
You will access a secret S.S. Anne level. Glitch below the truck, and boot up pokemon stadium again.
Your pikablu will still be named pikablu but it's a mew in disguise.
Now, take the pokemon stadium cartridge and put it in an NES.
Then, switch it for super mario bros.
You will be in world 9-7.
Die, and you will become luigi.
You have to activate a specific block in order to change luigi's color to blue.
Complete the level, quicly remove it and put it into the N64, quickly remove it again, and switch for banjo-kazooie.
You will have access to the ice key.
Stop and swop with donkey kong 64.
It will lead you to a different room than it originally would, and secretly transports the blue luigi color palette to super mario 64.
Switch with super mario 64. To activate the color palette, you have to reset the game on the same frame you get burned by fire.
Pausing the game on the same frame you get burned by fire doesn't work, because the game registers the paused state and the color palette gets set to all zero.

Nope. Description says that the spot where you can collect the Secret is covered by the coin in the middle and the upper coin of the ring. Theres no spot at all where you can collect the secret and NOT collect the coins. Unless you move the coins with cloning.

There are no coin glitches in BOB, but I think in the Japanese version you can collect 65536 coins, and as far as the game is concerned, you've collected 0 coins.

That last goomba on the ground JUST to be able to bounce off of it was, oddly, the most insane thing in the video for me. The fact that he not only did this huge thing, but did this one thing you totally don't even notice, which ends up being so small anyway, but gets it done. Like the scuttlebug in the .5 A presses video. I completely forgot about it, and then in the end, it's used for ONE jump, but it's impossible to do without.

Wait so why isn't snowman's lost his head possible? Let's see if I can do the math for stars that require coins: 15 courses of red coins, 15 courses of 100 coin stars, 3 Bowser levels of red coins, 3 cap courses of red coins, wing mario over the rainbow red coins, and secret aquarium red coins. That makes 38, and so at most there are 120 - 38 = 82 possible coinless stars. So which others are not possible coinless?
