I am a big collector and my second most favorite collection is my collection of every Saga card. It is an inexpensive collection (the most expensive Saga is Urza’s Saga for $30) and there is only roughly 150 cards in the collection (because Saga cards only first came out in Dominaria in 2018). Yet it is a collection I greatly enjoy.
My favorite collection I have is every Sol Ring variant. This one is a lot more expensive lol, e.g., a pack fresh NM Alpha Sol Ring for $2000, and NM Beta Sol Ring for $800, the beautiful Kaladesh Masterpiece for $750, the LOTR variants for about $1000 total, the foil Judge promo for $300, etc etc etc.
Collecting Magic cards can be quite an enjoyable hobby. My dream would be for my child to eventually get into Magic when he is older and I could gift all my collections to him.

I think the praetors from all will be one did the serialized the best. They had unique art that you couldn't find elsewhere.

Also a collector here. Don’t play but enjoy cracking packs. Something so satisfying about it. I would say my crowning achievement is a near mint unlimited collection (non-power 9) that I put together card by card for about 10 months. I love the unlimited chaos orb so much. I’d say once a week I pull out that binder and flip through. Gives me the feel goods! Keep up the content. Thought you nailed your take on MH3. I’m pumped for this set and think it’ll be a great collector long term hold.

I love incidental collections. Like right now I gave a sleeve in a binder dedicated to the "How to play" cards that come with mtg decks.

It's good to collect things that you enjoy, better when it's also something you can use, and fantastic when it holds value or increases over time. I like to "bling" out my commander decks with ABU lands.

Nice video Josh. It shouldn't be controversial that a COLLECTIBLE card game should have cards that maintain or grow in their value. Otherwise, its not a CCG anymore, you may as well take up playing UNO if you want to play with worthless game pieces. Also, opening packs is one of the great joys of the hobby; buying singles is good in many cases, but pack cracking is a key part of the hobby. IMO, you're missing out if you have never opened packs.

Ah, a viewer of great culture I see.... That is my sealed box of Windows 98 I bought at a garage sale when I was in my 20's for $0.25! It has special meaning to me - that meaning is.... well... its neat and I like it! XD

I am not sure if the 750 Eldrazi are US only or US/CAN only or Worldwide, but assuming US only, there are only 15 in every state. That number screams predatory. There are people who are willing to chase one of those cards, no matter what. While this isn't The One Ring (which was also a mistake IMO), it just tells me that Hasbro (and to a lesser degree WoTC) cares almost completely about the bottom line and only slightly if at all about us, the consumers that got them to where they are today.
This may just be me, but if you want to make something collectable, make it collectable, but attainable, if it was like 250 of the 3 and 500 of the Elemental Invocations, that might sway me into saying, this is an okay (not great, but okay) idea. But the fact that realistically nobody is going to see any serialized cards in this set makes it not worth even thinking about, let alone trying.

      @markusbetts 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

They are Worldwide for sure, and interesting point I think George has been saying something similar, that they should do gradations of serials so that the are both somewhat attainable and special/exclusive, although for this set they also included a chase treatment as that sort-of middle ground you are looking for, the textured foils you can only get on the Elementals and the Flip walkers.

Most collectable SET? Naw. Might it have the most value holding of the 3 serialized? Yeah, that's pretty likely. It's up there with the LoTR sol rings and LCI super neon Mana Crypt. I'd venture to say that MH2 is a more collectable SET than MH3. Excluding UB sets I think it will be Bloomburrow or Duskmourn due to both being wildly popular themes catering to majorly different audiences. (cute fluffy animals vs horror? it feels so win for both sets)
MH3, I see, the 750 serialized copies for big dollar value, the concept arts right behind (since it isn't generally a reprinted style), then the retro frames (especially MH2 add-ins to round out that set some) and a few of the borderless cards. There's also the non-fetchland lands that have future use (Phyrexian Tower borderless, Ugin's Labrynth, Talon gates, Planar Nexus, Lazotep Quarry. etc..)
But it's semantics at that point? What makes a thing collectable? I'm 15 (16) cards from completing my "main" collection of Quinton Hoover's. At the same time, I snagged everything Dakkon Blackblade related... and all of the Fallout Vault Boy cards.. but what makes it "collectable" There's a guy who's got 100k+ copies of Stone rain as a collection. Doesn't do it for me, but makes him happy and that's cool.
There will never be 93/94 MTG again. I sort of feel that "Collectability" needs to be broken out an defined a bit more. The value vs the draw of the set.
Take Phyrexians. Phyrexians can be "collectable" Form whatever set, doesn't matter. The subject of the collection matters.
Slivers is a good tribal example. Not that every sliver is really that useful, but if you like Sliver decks.. you're likely to have a sliver collection just because.
What about styles? Maybe someone out there really digs on those Pop-Art profile cards? That takes on a level of collectability.
Concept art and blueprints are another variation of collectability based on the art style/preference.
You like serialized cards, that's another reason for a collection.
I mentioned my Quinton Hoover collection, that's all based on a specific MTG artist across multiple sets.
There's so many possible facets to consider as far as a collectable product goes. I think that's part of why UB Fallout hit home. You can get (effectively) the complete set from the 4 decks. That's ease of access to all players. You then have the Collector boosters (ok with a few cards unique to them, but not obscenely rare) with alternate artwork, if you have the desire/funds to go for it. Plus the surge foil vs normal foil and even serialized cards for the serialized market.
I have reason why I don't like so many variants (mostly how insane it is to keep track of) and I really feel the AMOUNT per release should be tightened (seriously. pick your 20 cards with unique treatment and maybe pick 20 others to have an alternate style) but I think that all adds to someone's collecting itch somewhere.
P.S. WoTC, please make serialized card art unique to serialized cards with maybe a limited print run of non-serialized versions (E.G. LoTR's Sol Rings of power)

This is why we love ya around here - we don’t always agree but I love how you lay things out for us.
Couple of my thoughts - I see you’re take on collectability and your phyrexian example makes sense but idk about Bloomburrow being more collectable. It’s an arbitrary conversation and hard to prove either way but I think I’d view MH3 above Bloom or Dusk personally, but it’s all subjective and that’s just my opinion.

@@HometownTcg I'll probably catch some hate, but then again, it's all about defining what makes a SET "collectable."
MKM, OTJ, BB, DM, LCI, WOE, I view as a "collectable SET".
MH3, I believe, has many collectable aspects. I believe it brings value to the game in play-ability and in long term net worth. I don't look at MH3 and think to myself: "Gee, I sure would like to have a full set of MH3 bindered up to enjoy." Now, that's not everyone. Everyone has their own flavor when it comes to collecting and that's a good thing for TCGs as a whole.
When I think about a set that is thematic, be it over the top like the 2024 standard sets, ultra-specific like UB, or continuing like Ixalan, Phyrexia, Dominaria, Ravnica, etc.. it just has a different feel to the SET.
And I think that's where I may have minced words a bit and/or been out of context towards the point of the video.
MH3 has serialized cards. It has retro frames + Retro foils for MH3 and MH2, it has full arts, it has profile artwork, it has the ripple foils from the special commander decks, it has textured foils, it has 10 SPG's 5 of which are the elementals and can be textured. As a set, if bring a lot of collectability and assets to the game. I believe that to be the key takeaway from the video.
My original comment broke down into the various aspects of collecting. There are people out there who want to collect a full set of Arabian Nights, or Legends or the Urza's sets. That's something different about a set. While there are collectors out there who do want every card from every set regardless of what's in the set itself, I feel there is a distinct difference between a SET being "collectable" and a SET bringing "collectability". Most every YT head will bash MKM, with some solid justification. But for fans of that detective-type theming.. they may want to collect the set. They may want all of the card + the ones with slight art variants, and all the "invisible ink" portfolios because it plays into the theming. They may even have a copy or two of the CLUE bundle for the same reason. Same can be said with OTJ. Some people really did not like the inconsistency of the lore. Some don't like Western theming in general. If it didn't have new (and strong) mechanics, it likely would have flopped with MKM (I judge that off anecdotal evidence along with the OTJ, limited Secret Lairs not selling out). But there were/are people who absolutely loved Western theming and likely collected up a set.
As for relating MH2 to MH3, that's just my personal thought. It felt more cohesive and had several decent sub-catergories. It brought in the Elementals, it had the squirrels. I think the main thing being that it wasn't touched with the commander bug, which doesn't wreck MH3, it just dilutes its identity. That's purely my personal opinion comparing the two.

I love it when people crack packs in fact we need more degenerate gambler openers to subsidize this hobby. The peak of this was Zendikar Rising when everyone was looking for the masterpiece lands which cratered the price of everything including the chase mythics. This would have happened with the one ring from LOTR but the box price was higher and it was found too soon to really drive prices into the dirt.

Someone has a hoarding problem in the background it seems.
All jokes aside if you are collecting these why are you getting multiple numbers of them? Are you trying to collect booster boxes that you feel will be more valuable later? If so then why only get 4 or 5 of each and not 25+. Not sure you should display a win98 box as it looks weird
