  • Here we look at a new technology from Kyoto University which promises to regrow teeth. It will initially be tested on children who genetically have too few teeth but is expected to also work on regrowing teeth in the elderly.

@@ModernHealthspan Yeah, I usually have trouble remembering what the name of it is, my dentist named it in passing awhile ago, but my enamel is more porous on most of my teeth, the front four bottom teeth were unaffected by the gene responsible and are pretty much pristine, while the rest are abominable, the outside of the teeth kind of crush in if something is tough or if in the time I had upper teeth I would grind them in my sleep and wake up with dust in my mouth. I imagine the bottom four front teeth similarly to tiger stripes in the way whatever the gene is called presents.

Blinders can make Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs)...the real reason "processed" foods are unhealthy. To reduce formation, carbohydrate should be blended alone, having either fat or protein present causes the carbohydrate to bond to fat or protein creating AGEs. Most of these healthy kidneys can remove. One they can't: glucosepane. This wedges itself into collagen, laminin, fibronectin, and elastin increasing tissue stiffness. And most relevantly, it stiffens the arteries.
There are some tricks. You can blend components separately and then mix together by hand at the end. Another thing you can do is put something acidic in there at the start. The acid helps reduce the reaction.
AGEs are more commonly known to be formed during high temperature cooking. They are also formed in the body at an increased rate when glucose is elevated, such as in diabetics.
I take some supplements to minimize these creations. I cook mostly with water, sauces and steam to avoid the temperatures that promote these reactions. I only buy and eat raw seeds and nuts, never roasted.
There is a table on the Internet that shows the AGEs levels in many foods. The methods used there I have heard undercounts AGEs in carbohydrates, but is still very useful. The very worst foods are bacon, butter, BBQ chicken, margarine, Parisian cheese, broiled hot dog, pine nuts, roasted chicken, soft cream cheese, steak pan-fried in olive oil, roasted cashews, deep-fried chicken, steak pan-fried in canola, and mayonnaise.

Since I was a pre-teen, there have been proposed alternative ways for filling teeth or curing them of cavities (laser, electric pulse, gels), and I have never seen one of these treatments reach mainstream dentistry.
As someone who is absolutely terrified of dentistry, had just begun to trust my dentist when he left the local practice, that practice closing down, no other NHS dentists available in my town (and not likely to start up either), I face a future of going to A&E for emergency extractions or just letting old teeth fall apart and drop out.
Given the mysterious disappearance of all the other aforementioned treatments over the past 40 years, I wonder if we will really see this treatment appear in dental clinics.
And for those of us who can't afford private dentists, if this will ever be offered by the NHS (not a chance, I think). At best, I suspect it'll be exclusive for the haves, not the have nots.

One problem with awakening vestigial genes is that there is a good chance they are damaged. Every generation has around 100 mutations. If something important is damaged, then they are less likely to survive and procreate. If the gene is no longer used, it does not matter, and damage will accumulate over time. There is no selection pressure to keep it intact.
There is also a good chance these teeth will be a next size up, and not fit in the mouth. People might get some nifty canines too.

When I was really young, I heard some stories from very old people telling stories of few people who reached around 100 years old and grew some kind of dentition or teeth. From the story, the teeth are described smaller (baby teeth like I suppose) and not a complete set as one would imagine. Perhaps there is a physiological change at that age that somehow affects that USAG-1 that allows the 3rd dentition to occur. I didn't know there is that 3rd tooth germ. Wow!

So how will this work if a person has severe periodontal desiese, gum, and bone loss? Does the tootg bud akso stimulate gum and bone to grow? Wont the periodontal desiese attack the new tooth as well? Or is this only for select people? There have been many of these stories for years like tooth regeneration for no more cavities, but they all seem to just fizzle away.

My son’s friend, at the age of 21 or thereabouts, suddenly started growing a third set of teeth. Obviously there was not enough room for all the teeth, so he had the older ones extracted, as the new ones appeared. I know this is an extremely unusual occurrence, and I thought he was so lucky, to get brand new teeth again. We should all grow new teeth at the age of between 30 and 40, because by then, we will look after them better, perhaps, than we did before. With new insight and knowledge, we could all have all our teeth, in perfect condition, well into old age. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? No fillings, no root canals, no extractions, no crowns and bridges, no false teeth/ dentures. That would all be a thing of the past! Oh joy! 😂🤣
