If I had more land I would be adding more jap maples to my 2. They give so much interest and your ferns are amazing!! I also love the hardy mum. HOLY FERNS!!!! I suggest you leave them right there in those containers...cut them down in November, mulch them and then watch out for the fronds in and around April. I have similar ones tight in a rock wall - I cut them down, mulch them. Remember they have been around since the Jurassic period so whatever you do you should just leave them where they love it. 6B

    Loving your fall tour! I'm soo jealous of your trees and all their gorgeous colors! I am watching wondering if you might consider another walk thru explaining what and when and how, you will cut things back to prepare for winter? I learn so much from you!

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Becky, Thank you so much!! In the past I had cut things back in fall. However, I've come to learn that its much less work to cut back perennials in Spring once they have had time to dry up. The material is alot lighter then to pick up and dispose of. Also, late winter/early spring is when most things can be pruned. It does depend on what your growing as to when it can be pruned. For example, if you have lilacs, you would wait to prune those until right after they bloom. Otherwise you would be pruning off their blooms. Same with some types of hydrangeas, like the macrophylla, and even the oak leaf, those bloom on old wood (last years wood), therefore incorrect pruning time could sacrafice your blooms. The only plants in my garden that I will be pruning/cutting back this fall will be the taller ornamental grasses. Its been my experience that they make quite a mess if left up over winter and the grasses fly all over the garden/yard. Also, leaving up perennials and dropped leaves and not cleaning up until spring provides great winter habitat for wildlife and insects. Hope this helps.

      @@HookedandRooted thank you so much for this great information! I was mainly wondering about lilacs, butterfly bush, and hydrangeas so that helps a ton!!

  • @Matti6950

    Glad you called the one i was curious about by name in this vid (Katsura) you didn'"t in last video :) Lovely tree, just bit to big (my garden is really small compared to yours) Hopefully Orange dream will do the trick (similar). Was gonna go for Shirawasanum Moonfire but you make me doublt to go for Autumn moon, it seems stronger in colours.
    Fireflow is also on my list since not to big, but it can still be 5 meters so i will keep watch in the growth yours does to make decision. Maybe Rhode island red (smallest relative big leave red maple). Did you prune that Fireglow in frontyard? It looks tick stem, yet very short but filled with new branches, my gut feeling says it has to be pruned, if so, gj, i love it, i might 'dare' to buy one then (i can't allow it much bigger in my small garden).
    I have Acer Japonicum Aconitifolium (love everything about this one).
    Orange dream
    Skeeters broom (upright but dwarf, perfect for my garden)
    Osakazuki (kind to big, but i bought a multistem (6 stems, vigorous with low growth) and will let it loose energy in all those stems, the top ones where cut already in factory, kinda good, preventing instant big branches, any branch that grows 1 meter per year (with no side branches) i will remove, those are the source of fast growth (bloodgood has this also).
    Also got it what i think 'Takao' (shop doesnt give it cultivar). Not special but i love the vigorous growth and the one i bought has an incredible nice starting stem (Splits in two strong upright branches immediately splitting into 2 and 3 branches forming 5 very strong upward branches with minimal chance of falling over. Another wonderful video!! I am looking for mid height flowers with high impact for the edge of my beds. I absolutely need to grow gomphrena next year! It will be perfect! I hope you’ll bring us along for dahlia digging and storing. All of my tubers died last year and I’m thinking it’s because I didn’t account for humidity. Hoping to save mine from this year for next year

      Hi! I do plan on sharing the storing of my dahlias. While I'm fairly new to dahlias (growing them for about 4 years now), I have learned a few things and I'm happy to share. Gomphrena is great! I hope you try them next season. Thank you!!

    If you cut down your hardy hibiscus you are risking it from getting root rot, during wet winters moisture will run down the hollow stems and sit causing root rot. It's best to cut them back in Spring.

    Do you have a link to where you got your Vince memorial stone? We lost our pup in July & want to put a stone where he liked to hangout.

    Steph! Where are the Japanese maples planted? South facing, north facing, full sun in summer? I got a space for one: there are Japanese andromeda’s (yes, divas) planted there - huge ornamental grasses that do very well all year round (the “winter interest” ones I described that you also had) and a space where its blank, right next to it that a pee gee hydrangea died (due to poor drainage) however...nepita + the grasses + rudbeckia do very well. I have to be sure that this plant will thrive. Any information from your sister 6b is very helpful.

    Hi Steph, the name for the variegated
    Dogwood Celestial Shadow (Hybrid) Tree, fully grown 15-20 ft tall, 10-20 ft wide,zones 5-9, sun to partial shade
    mutation of Cornus Florida x kausa. I have a small one in my garden but mine it’s struggling 😢

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ingrid! Yes! Thats the other variety I have jotted down as the trees potential name. Thank you so much! I hope yours does a bit better. I had that one planted in a spot that was a bit dry and got full sun. I moved it about 2 years ago to the backyard, where now its an understory tree (gets a bit more protection from the full sun), and the soil there is also more moist and its growing much better. Hope this helps.

      Hi there! So far its going ok, I do have to be more careful and spray deer spray throughout the winter since that's when food is scarce for them. They have nibbled on the JM's on occasion, but seem to be more interested in other plants in my garden, like hydrangeas for example.

    Erin, a beautiful fall garden tour I live in Minnesota 4b and very fortunate to enjoy fall leaf color. I would like to select plant Japanese maples next year I’m pushing the growing zone hoping to find a micro climate area for them. I experience deer pressure off and on my question is do the deer nibble on your maples? Should I prepare to add deer spikes or spray. Thank you

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! I don't want to jinx it, but the deer mostly go after my hydrangeas and other plants. However, I will say that I put out those deer spikes (from a previous video), and I also spray pretty regularly to hopefully keep them away. Its certainly a challenge especially during winter when they get extra hungry. You cover more area with spray as the spikes can get expensive to cover large areas. I find they work best when placed further out to create a perimeter, and they also work better with shorter plants. I really like the invisible fence deer and rabbit. Just don't spray on a windy day. Its very stinky, but effective: amzn.to/3Snr7H2

    Thank you for the lovely fall garden tour. What is the name of the tall green evergreen in the front corner of your house, behind the new grass that you just planted, just down from your white gymphryna ? It probably 3/4 of the way through your video?

    Stunning! How do u over winter yr ferns. I have two by my garage they are gorgeous I hate to pull them out and toss them. I live in New Hampshire. Also I have ladies mantle and they have seeded very well maybe too well. I plan on transplanting some to other areas. But how can I keep them in clumps like yours and do I cut them down to the ground. Thank you

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Denise, I made this video last year about overwintering my ferns. If they don't get much humidity they do tend to dry up a bit and drop foliage, which can get messy. But they are certainly a good candidate for wintering over. The ladies mantle, They will grow into a little mound that way from one seedling. I think moving them around and transplanting would be a good idea. If your able, that could be done now, or you can wait until spring. I love Japanese maples, but I am always afraid to plant them because of it's cost and the fear that they won't survive the PA summer. What is the condition of your Japanese maple garden? Full sun? Part shade? It would be helpful to know the sun situation that you have! Thank you! ❤

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว

      In PA, I believe you are a similar zone to me, a 6? If so most of them are pretty hardy. I can only speak to the varieities I'm growing in my garden, but they do well for me here. The area where I have most of mine planted is morning shade and afternoon sun. while ideally it would be the other way around as most of them prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. But its working out ok. Some of the lighter varieties do get some leaf scorch from the sun, overtime as they aclimate, they should burn up less. Hope this helps! A coral bark japanese maple, and a bloodgood is a less fussy variety and very commonly found. These could be a good way to start with some JM's in your garden. Hope this helps.
