Funnily when i was reading re as it was coming out each week, i remembered reading an interview ishida did when the anime came out and he actually choose the artist who made unravel so once more ishida picked one of the best parts of the anime
@@ikmaen he "recently" began a new manga called Choujin X. ~30 ish chapters out at the moment of writing this and while it's a tone quite different from TG, its still great and features his amazing art.
@@kirabean5441 I ended up reading it on 2 different sites that being Manganato or something like that and Comick. Both TG and TG:re are on both so it’s up to you
As someone who is a big fan of Tokyo Ghoul, it really sucks how a lot of people never gave the manga a shot because of the bad taste the anime left. I love the art style and the emotion that's conveyed in the manga. I cried my eyes out when the mom was killed protecting her daughter, and as a kid back then who only have a mom left as well, that shit hit way harder just imagining something like that happening to me and my sister. I love how it isnt black and white, and shows both sides of the story like you say.
I mean lots of tvs and movies shorten a lot of their source material to make it fit, that's just how to works. Now I'm not saying that's a good thing, I'm just saying how it is. Although makes you wonder what would've happened if they had managed to get all of the story in properly.
@@tvheadcontent Um you realize HALF of the manga is a massive time skip and spirals into a complete trainwreck because the writer completely gave up...

At least with Full metal the first series was essentially to diverged into an anime only later on in the series because the anime caught up with the manga. At least with brotherhood it followed the entire manga. That's why we got the satisfying ending because it again followed the manga.
Yeah they really, REALLY shafted TG with that. Not only did the anime turn a beautiful and tragic manga into a generic battle Shonen seasoned with edginess, but they rushed the hell out of it too... After I eventually read the manga, it made me genuinely pissed off at how badly it was adapted and how much characterization and depth was so carelessly left out of the anime.
100% Agree, that's the case for a lot of anime when animating moving frames its basically impossible to get anywhere near as detailed as a Manga. only cases where the anime looks equal or better is when the manga has a simple art style that can be easily reproduced.
The anime was bad because the manga was bad... Re never should have happened and the season 2 deviation didn't matter because the content the manga covered for that part was only Kaneki and Banjou's relationship... The entire manga fell apart after Yamori died
the ending where ishida started to worn out and rush the ending makes the manga production itself a tragedy just hits for me, it ended just like what kaneki said in first chap
The finals arcs of :RE were rushed and a bit of a let down. That said, if you read Ishida's post about being burnt out and jaded due to his work load (that was released shortly after :RE ended in 2018), the curtain gets pulled back and you start to get why it ended the way it did. At least it wasn't Attack on Titan...
@@ThePlanet3ater just my preferences, theres a dream theory going around when the manga first ended and i prefer that because the happy ending seem a bit too sudden with so many questions left unanswered. I was very dissapointed when the manga ended but this theory came out it gave me sense of relief. Kinda neat the ending can be interpreted as both happy and tragedy depends on reader's view and preferences
Sui ishida’s art and writing is just mesmerizing and the feeling of knowing that the rabbit hole goes deeper than the anime is awesome, but unfortunately he suffered as the manga’s popularity grew resulting in the rushed ending that the manga got
@@KiddBuu_ Just wish Ishida went on hiatus and vacation instead of rushing :re ending to get his mind refreshed and find inspiration again. His Tokyo Ghoul series is one of the best mangas, the best stories out there, and to have it get a rushed ending feels like a waste like a giant house of cards tumbling.
Sui Ishida's art throughout Tokyo Ghoul was my biggest complaint of the manga. It makes amazing panels most of the time but when there is a slugfest or some fast paced action the art becomes incomprehensible, there are no sharp outlines and it becomes hard to tell what the fuck is going on.
@@jaceharrison7936 i think he addressed that in his afterword. that if he took a break he felt he would probably just never go back to it. so he pushed through and just. gave it an ending, and closed the book on the series.
Yeah man I watched the anime about a year ago and I'm reading the manga right now and I must say that the manga is a masterpiece and the anime is just as bad #TokyoGhoulBrotherhood
It was so nice that Tokyo Ghoul isn’t another cheap “humanity is the real villain” story like Elfen Lied or somethin. It proposes multiple questions about the existence and survival of two species that cannot coexist and says “now how do you think this’ll work? Cuz I sure as hell don’t know”. I just finished the first manga series, and it’s easily become one of my favorites.
I think the scene that hit me most in this entire series was when Amon asked Kaneki why he fights for Ghoul’s when he’s originally human, and his answer was that it’s because most of the people he loves are Ghouls.
True, no need a philosophical reason, just a simple reason like that make us see Kaneki as a real person, not just some made-up manga character to serve the plot
true it's such a simple but completely realistic and understandable reason, it makes him infinitely more relatable than if he had some grandiose motivation like defeating some big bad evil or something, nah the guy just wants to live peacefully with his loved ones and the circumstances of the world he lives in make that always a struggle for him and so he must fight
For me it was what Garnt showed in the video, with Takizawa writing his will. Even in the anime it was damn powerful and harsh. At first it's treated as a way to show off the characters' personalities in a silly way, only to be reminded that all of these characters have lives that they're DEATHLY afraid of losing.
Y'know Gigguk, you're the person who gave us this line: "I'm gonna go join the guys who tortured me." "That doesn't make any sense!" "Bet it makes sense in the manga."
Jokes on you, this is after watching the anime and the parody that i started to read the manga. And i effectively make sense because it does not fucking happen since this is where the story stray away from the manga
@@hestan723 √A = Route Aomori, an alternate storyline where he joins the enemies instead of making a group of his own with his allies like he did in the manga. (Somebody told me this is what happened there, I haven't gotten around to read the manga yet.)
I thought tokyo ghoul season 1 and 2 where great. I actually thought season 2 was great to. I can understand why people say season 3 and 4 suck but not season 2. Can someone explain why season 2 is so hated?
@@Superlordx Season two is hated because it's basically just a fanfic of the anime writers and has no resemblance to the story of the manga whatsoever. This is especially bad because season 3 and 4 continue completely normally as to how they did in the manga which means that anime onlys basically missed like 90% of the context for these seasons. If you want an example of just how drastic these changes were just know that in the manga Kaneki founded his own group that went against aogiri while in the anime he just fucking joined them
In the part where one of the Aogiri members stocked still motionless then utters *"He's beginning to believe"* while Kaneki stops the Kagune using only his emergence...
No no no the best part is when kaniki says I am the Tokyo ghoul and then tells Jason I'm going to unravel your intestines and then unravel plays in the background.
The difference between edge and dark is direction. Adding darkness without impact is only the edge of things. So your characters and world should not only feel the impact of these events, but do so in ways that fit their specific situation. The darkness is the tone, empathy is the hue, and sympathy is the contrast. If you're a writer struggling to break from edgy cliches, hope this helps.
Personally, I think "edgy" is too vague to be criticism. And while some works considered "edgy" lack direction as you say, others don't have that problem and are still considered "edgy" nonetheless. For example, works that are mean-spirited and are made to rip on something else are considered "edgy" as well. Like Gigguk said, it's more of a feeling, not a genuine criticism.
So I have a question for you. What shows do you think are edgy with your definition? I have seen multiple people say shows like: Re-Zero, Devil man Crybaby, Akame ga kill, Tokyo Ghoul, Deadman Wonderland etc... are edgy shows. But in that same thread that was asking for: "What are the edgiest shows you've seen?" No one/or very little ppl ever mentions shows like: Berserk, Attack on Titan, Cyberpunk Edge Runners etc... All have dark tones to them. Just to expound and potentially start a discourse - Ultimately, I think part of the problem here is that people have different definitions of the word "edgy". Some think it's a good thing while others think it's a bad thing. Those who think it is a good/ok thing are quite honestly mistaken. They are defining edgy as: " dark & cool/mysterious" That's not what edgy is. Dark, cool & mysterious is dark cool & mysterious; We have words for those already. Edgy is something or someone, being or trying to be, intense/dark and or errant/deviant, for the sake of being so, cause its cool. 1. Characters can be edgy, but that's not synonymous with bad/edgy writing since that can be WHO the character is - people like that exist. 2. Writing can be edgy. Per the definition of edgy, this is basically when the writing is dark but is just plain and simple, badly written/executed to the point where the meaning, impact and experience are lost/overshadowed by merely the darkness itself. So, for all intents and purposes, it becomes writing/a story that is dark, intense etc... to be just that - cause its cool. Which should not be the case since the dark writing/stuff should be there to SUPPORT and CREATE, meaning impact and experience. [ Also, last side note (For Gigguk & others): Just bc something looks edgy, doesn't mean it is. Looks alone is not what makes edgy. This can be said for multiple other things. Ex.) Just bc it looks bad doesn't mean it is, looks don't determine what is of actual, meaningful quality. ]
I think the Edge line has more to do with emotional investment, which is admittedly tied to direction, but still more subjective. This is why Edge is associated with immaturity; younger audiences get invested more easily, and older audiences are more jaded to stories in general as well as their younger selves.
imo edgy is just another term for "teen angst" used by people being lazy when critiquing a work. I think its more a problem of people failing to critique work for actual failings. Its very similar to political statements meant to dehumanise the opposition so you can just point out failings because they hold the opposite view to you, rather than having meaningful discourse.
@@JLRB__ you need a tl;dr on that essay, but I'll answer the question at the top. I'm honestly not too in the weeds on anime, so I don't have a lot of examples to pull from, but shows like SAO and whatever the one is with the guy who makes a gun and gets way too cozy with a vampire or whatever that looks like a *child*, those shows are almost all edge and no substance. Bad things happen to the main character and a harem happens because the author was horny and the MC is the only character with any fleshing. It's that kind of egotistical worldview of "I'm so tragic and no one understands me" that rejects even the notion of other characters being more than set-dressing. Re: Zero definitely has some edge to it, but there sometimes needs to be leeway in that judgement when looking at the story being told. MC again ends up with a gaggle of gals following after him, but there is depth to other characters that not only disagree with MC but also outright oppose and fight against him. These other characters gain depth from empathizing with seeing a person going through trauma and also having different tolerances for their how far they extend personal sympathies as they interact. This is the substance that's needed behind the edge to really cut deep, because if all you have is edge then you'll only ever be skin-deep. Edit: the "leeway" I'm giving RZ is due to the broad scope of the story. If you were to either add more characters or better flesh out the ones in play, you'd end up with something similar to the run-length of the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime. That's not all bad, Hughes had more of an impact for the exposure we had with him, but it dilutes what should be the core of the story which is of two brothers trying to reconcile their shared grief.
Fun fact white hair is described often attributed to lose of innocence. Which is just another reason why the panel/scene hits hard moreso for the manga. Because in poor old ken's case he had not only his mind broken almost beyond repair, was torture for who knows how long during each session during the 10 days Jason held Ken, and much much more
Marie-Antuanette Syndrome, yeah, when extreme stress can cause one's hair to lose melanin at very quirk speed, the late queen only needed one night, if I'm not mistaken

If anyone is wondering why the 2nd half of Re started getting messy and super fast paced, it's cause Ishida was massively burned out and wanted to ended it asap. If you check his post ending afterwords he says that despite being burned out, he kept going with the manga because he felt he would have just quit had he taken a break.
Yeah reading that afterword he did was heartbreaking. The toll was too much for him. The man worked on his manga for 7 years straight with no breaks. Not even once if I'm correct. Cant blame him for thinking he would quit. Thank God he is doing ok and still passionate about manga with Choujin X which has been great so far and is taking his time for releasing chapters

Finally, it only took us die-hard Tokyo Ghoul Manga fans 8 years for The Anime Zone Man to read the manga. I am so happy right now. Yes, there is two wolves inside of me.
The "quality dip" towards the end was due to Sui Ishidas poor mental health. During the publishing of Tokyo Ghoul there has been a lot of harassment and hate going on from so-called fans and Ishida suffered bad PTSD along with the "normal" pressure as Mangaka to release weekly. Makes me sometimes wonder what and if Ishida would have changed, if the circumstances had been kinder to him and he took the proper time.
Dragon arc has the greatest potential so far, I would spare any previous arc to get a better narration of it (except Rushima Island, oh god it went so wrong but still bearable). Just imagine Washuu members or other CCG regions across the world to response to the whole mess. it was too rushed even at the confrontation between Kaneki and Furuta. like how Furuta got kicked the day he was promoted. also Rize was treated so bad, she was disregarded. also the clowns were so wild imo. There's more but that's not the point. Arima's death was a flag and the beginning of an end, not the end itself. There're some cons at the end for the most part howerver, it could be better if ishida stopped for a while and handled it properly. Tokyo Ghoul was one of the gracious things he and we had, as it developed his art and fame, and for us, it was thought-provoking interesting and phenomenal. it is hard to see a mangaka puts his soul in the work like Ishida, the fact Tokyo Ghoul was done in 8 years never fails to amaze me regardless the art and quality. I would never sayisfy my appreciation for the man's work. he's the best.
Even though I feel like I would've appreciated a good Tokyo Ghoul reboot while still in my teens, I'd still watch a *good* reboot anytime really. While it's true that after reading and watching absolute masterpiece series over the course of almost a decade now I don't feel the same need for a better adaptation of TG as I felt a couple of years ago, I still definitely think TG should be done justice. Especially bcos it was my second (or third maybe) anime I'd seen and I hold it dear to my heart. It truly *deserves* a *good* reboot. That and TPN S2.
@@oenkapoen1396 It's a shojo action anime, if u like retro stuff you might like it but to be fair, I could only sit trough it the second time bcos of nostalgia. the episodes are too... half baked lol I'd say watch something else if you have free time to watch anime
I've always taken "tHe MaNgA iS bEtTeR" with a grain of salt, but I cannot stress how true the Tokyo Ghoul fans were when they said that. It has better pacing, more fleshed out characters, and a coherent story. Edit: I said better, not good pacing
As someone who prefers anime but has read a lot of manga, I really think its true that the manga is better most of the time (with Light Novel adaptations even moreso). I get how this sentiment can be obnoxious and annoying but part of the problem is how its said, coming off as confrontational instead of encouraging. Anyways, I would encourage you that the next time you see someone say "the manga is better" to maybe check it out.
Most animes are good enough that skipping out on reading the manga is not a big deal but when it comes to Tokyo ghoul, the anime was just so shit that it basically wasn’t even material worth glancing at, let alone watching consecutive frames of it
One of the things the anime had going for it was its crazy good soundtrack. Seasons die one after another, Glassy Sky, On My Own, Alone, and then the Symphonic Suites, just to name a few. Some of the best music I have heard, love it to death.
*One of the things the anime had going for it was Yutaka Yamada. But seriously, his compositions are the only things that make this show memorable. His work on Vinland Saga completely outclasses TG too.
Someone talking about the greatness of this manga after so many years makes my day even though we just went through a typhoon...so thanks Garnt for making these videos. Keep up the good work!
Never read the manga, but holy shit, that torture scene is brutal. Makes sense on why his nails turned black and his hair turning white compared what we got in the anime.
it is labeled pshychological horror for a reason, it seems edgy until you read his monologue when a centipede roams inside his eardrums, "and then I heard a distant laugh,.. It was me"
I’m glad you and your fellow Tokyo Ghoul fans got to see this bro! (This is Aidan from twt btw 😅) Getting a anituber goat talking about your peak is a big honor! 🔥
As someone who’s read the manga like 4 times i can totally assure it’s one of the best things I’ve ever read in my entire life, and it deserves a proper adaptation but I do agree with the people that says that the ost should be the same, both the first and the second opening were just magical but specifically the second one, it has got me through some dark times and I still love it!
Licht und Schatten, Glassy Sky, Unravel, hell even Asphyxia are some of the best songs I've heard in anime, it's up there with Overlord openings and endings.
Feels like yesterday that Tokyo Ghoul was “that new popular show” and now it’s only a few years away from being “an oldie.” If it’s not already considered old.

@@seiaka Yeah I didn't really watch the anime much, only the 2 seasons years ago. I read the manga recently and love it but I can't deny it has it's faults and in my opinion not at masterpiece. Still really love it though.
One of my favorite things in my life was reading weekly chapters of tokyo ghoul from the start, theorizing what was going to happen next. Focusing on patterns like Kaneki touching his chin, hidden tarot cards symbolizing future events/character ends and not to mention the sudden end of Tokyo Ghoul where literally everyone uh dies including supposedly Kaneki. The series literally ended with no news until the sequel was announced later and everyone had no idea what was going on. Such an experience if you had the chance to read it as it was ongoing, personally one of my favorite manga's I have ever read.
@@pineapplekun8769 Yeah Kaneki's life is so so sad and bleak even from the start. Someone on reddit literally went panel to panel on all of TG and TG:Re and recorded every single time he lied when he touched his chin and man it's crazy how much I missed.
I've just started to read TG, because I heard that the manga is a lot better than the anime which I thought was fairly bad. Man, it feels like a completely different experience, it's so much more emotional and detailed.
I think that's the anime curse of trying to fit 300+ chapters of details into 48 episodes. The anime swerved around all the emotion and impact of the story in favor of the fighting (even though tokyo ghoul isn't a battle series). The whole point is the mystery, thriller, character development and emotional impact of the story, which can't be captured well when condensing that content into 48 episodes. Hell season 1 was a good adaptation but that still didn't even touch on what made TG great. Like how Kaneki volunteered to go with Jason to aogiri and enduring torture. Mostly skimmed over to condense the story
The scene that touched me the most was Juuzou and Mr.Shinohara's reunion after 9 years. I never get emotional while reading or watching something, but this scene nearly made me cry. Mr. Shinohara and Juuzou's bond, Mr. Shinohara going in a coma, the impact it had on Juuzou it was just so well written.
It was a touching moment for me also. I didn't like Juzou in Tokyo Ghoul at first but he became one of my favorite in Re thanks to his character development.
I really like hiw much impact Shinohara has in Juuzou. He's great mentor that change a heartless brat into respected team leader. Like this boy doesn't even care at anyone in beginning, but his panel when he sees Shinohara gets injured is really powerful, showing how much now he has someone to care about.
Suzuya was easily my favorite character in the manga. When he was first introduced, I was thought, "Oh, here's an over the top edgy character for some fanservice" but oh boy was I wrong. Through his relationship with Shinohara and eventual leadership role, he proved he was more than just a zany guy with interesting stitches. Truly a worthy successor to be CCG's reaper.
Root A was initially supposed to have a completely different story line. Ishida himself drew story boards for a new storyline that he later released in an art book and there was even a trailer that hinted at a new owl related storyline. For some reason, that whole thing got scrapped and the mess that was root A happened. Ishida later used story elements of his idea for root A in Tokyo ghoul :re manga
Honestly I didn’t hate Root A but Re holy fuck was that dog shit, root A had some feeling towards it, Re just felt like an entire new universe that didn’t make sense
@@beastyboy101bo ☠️ are you talking abt the re anime or manga? Cuz I can’t speak for the anime as I haven’t seen it, but the manga certainly stays faithful to og, and is a great continuation
When Kaneki finally broke becoming Centipede then broke again saying "I don't want to eat anymore" I just felt so much pity for him knowing there was no answer.
So happy to see sui ishida's work being acknowledged and appreciated. I know this video will bring quite a bit of interest back to the world of Tokyo ghoul and I'm all for it. If anyone is looking for a content creator who has extensively talked about TG I recommend sufferants, he's got a lot of videos on the themes and how he interprets the story. I also recommend Chojin X, a new manga sui ishida is working on
Honestly, as someone who had read the manga first and then watched the anime, I had to admit that the reason I'm so obsessed with Unravel, aside from it being amazingly good, is that the song fits perfectly with the manga's atmosphere rather than anime's. Of course, the anime then turned out to be a letdown but without it, we wouldn't have this awesome OP so at least for manga readers, Tokyo Ghoul still remains a masterpiece.
We cannot talk about Tokyo Ghoul, without mentioning the famous piano arrangement of "unravel" by Animenz, the most influential ani-pianist of all time. th-cam.com/video/sEQf5lcnj_o/w-d-xo.html I truly believe that this piano arrangement made a substantial contribution to Tokyo Ghoul's popularity and to the reputation of the ani-piano community. Not only is this the most popular anime piano arrangement of all time (currently sitting at 88M views) but Animenz described it his most difficult so far. The variety of advanced piano techniques, combined with its high faithfulness to the original song was what gave it such a notoriety. It has also become Animenz's signature song that he would play it in every of his live concerts. I would even say that the piano arrangement pushed the limits of what a piano arrangement could be.
What makes the entire thing about Root A even more tragic is that they discarded iirc. 300 storyboard pages done by Sui Ishida himself, which really included some fantastic character interactions and dialogue all because they were racing against the clock.
RE(edit) was not good. I legit read it and was like what in the world is going on. Nothing was explained just WAM time skip no context. Was a huge turn off never finished it. Read the recaps.
For many years, it was unanimously believed that the mess that is Tokyo Ghoul √A was solely Studio Pierrot's fault. And there were a few reasons why people believed it. Studio Pierrot has a mixed reputation for having produced anime such as Naruto, Boruto, Bleach, Kingdom, and Black Clover. These anime would often be criticised for several reasons such as sub-par animation and visual quality, excessive filler episodes, pacing issues and more. Because of the general media perception that animation studios matter the most when judging anime, it's easy to see why Pierrot is constantly discussed when talking about the Tokyo Ghoul anime. Also, after Tokyo Ghoul √A finished airing, Sui Ishida's drafts of √A were released online and circulated rapidly among the anime community. To everyone's dismay, the drafts were very, very different that what was shown in the anime. Scenes like Kaneki proclaiming that he will kill the One-Eyed King, Touka seeing Rize in Anteiku's basement, and Tatara forcing Kaneki to eat Taguchi did not make it to the anime. Here are the links to the drafts I managed to find: sunset-tower.tumblr.com/post/129424575942/thank-you-so-much-for-you-post-about-the-anime sunset-tower.tumblr.com/post/129418629852/ishidas-root-a-storyboard-drafts-are-so-fun-to sunset-tower.tumblr.com/post/129451544167/how-does-tatara-make-kaneki-to-eat-her-corpse-and This led to the anime-manga community creating the narrative that Pierrot ignored Ishida's drafts of √A when making the anime. One anituber even made a rant video about the drafts, which I think accelerated the narrative even more. However, this cannot be further from the truth as there was an interview with Shuhei Morita (Director of Tokyo Ghoul S1 and S2) in 2018, around the same time as the Tokyo Ghoul :re anime was airing. Link to interview: www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/88fddm/im_shuhei_morita_the_director_of_anime_series/ Before I talk about the interview, I needed to clarify a few things about the nature of √A. When √A was announced after Season 1 aired, it was advertised as a season based on Ishida's original story concept that deviates from the manga. The drafts are proof of this because they showed scenes that were not in the manga. www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-10-11/tokyo-ghoul-2nd-anime-season-video-teases-new-story-by-creator/.79825 The reason why I am saying this is that a major criticism about √A is it not following the manga, whereas it was Ishida himself who wanted √A to deviate from the manga. However, the anime-manga community largely blamed this decision on Pierrot because of the animation studio stigma. So if you are unhappy with the fact that √A deviated from the manga, then blame it on Ishida, not Pierrot, even if you respect him. Back to the interview. Basically, Morita stated that the reason why the anime was different from the drafts is that the producers interfered with the original vision. To understand what he means, we need to talk about the production committee. The majority of the anime-manga community believes that the animation studio is generally responsible for how a work is adapted. This is not the case most of the time, as it's the production committee (manga publishers, merch, TV companies etc.) that decides that. In the case of Tokyo Ghoul √A, here are the main producers: - Marvelous - TC Entertainment - Pierrot Now you are probably thinking: "Pierrot is on the production committee so they should have some responsibility in how the √A story was handled". However, that is not the case. Pierrot is ranked at the bottom of the list so they really have little say in the decision-making; they simply do what other producers ordered them to do. Back to the topic, Morita wanted to follow Ishida's drafts, but the producers' interference prevented Ishida and Morita's vision of √A come to fruition. This could be because the producers find Ishida's original story to be risker than the manga story in that it may not make a lot of money. The result was a mixture of anime-original and manga-canon scenes that didn't really make much sense. My intent with this comment is not to change your opinion on Tokyo Ghoul √A, but rather to bring light to a topic that is severely twisted by the anime-manga community for a very long time. Thank you for reading. This post was largely inspired by these 2 posts: twitter.com/Namaryuu/status/1494343939557675009 twitter.com/dotdotKam/status/1492920227104837633

If anyone is interested in what Ishida's doing after Tokyo Ghoul:re, I highly recommend his newest manga series, Choujin X! It's not quite the same tone as Tokyo Ghoul, but it carries Ishida's ability to convey the emotional state of characters through art and has fun characters and worldbuilding. Also, unlike :re, Ishida's actually giving himself more space between chapters, and seems to not be burning himself out as much. Edit: so I apparently forgot to put “not” in the last sentence and made it look like he was still burning himself out…
So far Choujin X is moving pretty well. I kind of like the more laid back attitude of the series compared to Tokyo Ghoul. Tokyo Ghoul was great for being dark and edgy. Choujin X has its own persona and I am glad Ishida sensei decided to make it different in style compared to TG.
@@zemox2534 For me, I actually don't mind. I go enjoy Spy x Family, Monster 8, both on Manga Plus, and when Choujin X comes out, I go happily read that. With this said, once the first real big cliff hanger comes out...I will probably be shouting MOARRRR! :P

It always makes me sad that Tokyo ghoul got shafted in the way it did. Sui Ishida put his heart soul and life force into that story to the point of making him sick to the point he did just want it to be over it is sad to see and he deserved better. Tokyo Ghoul needs to be redone by some high in studios it could very well be at Aot levels of animation and story telling if done right.
I've heard this forever and always told myself I would read the manga to see if the readers were right. I'm glad gigguk now is modivating me to revisit this series. Now I've heard the same thing about soul eater. I'm hoping the manga also blows my mind away
The anime did give us an amazing soundtrack however. Just wishing they'd redo it this time staying more faithful to the manga but keep the amazing soundtrack.
AoT animation and story telling isn't that great, lol. I'd say TG deserves the Madhouse treatment, but Madhouse only cares about HunterxHunter so they'd prob drop it after 1 season...
I own the all tokyo ghoul mangas and i can surely say that it is awesome. Not only art but also story is so good. It's dark and gets deeper and more philosophical slowly.
I'm so genuinely happy to see this kind of content about my all time fave manga, even after all these years. I also want to add how the whole "anime fiasco" is way worse than what may seem, since Ishida truly was madly in love with his series. He never took a single break (besides the one month from the end of Tg and the start of Tg:re), while consistently delivering some insane level of drawing on a *weekly* schedule. At one point, he was working on multiple Tg projects all at once (:re serialization, promo deck card, root A ending art). The final segment of the manga is objectively rushed for this very reason. This man overworked himself in a way that was insane even for the standard mangaka. And while I'm in no way supporting this kind of approach, it's clear too see how all of his effort came from a place of genuine love and care for both his craft and story. Lastly I just wanted to add how Root A was actually Ishida's own idea. He wanted to experiment more with what could have been of Kaneki's story. The issue that lead to the disaster we got came from the directors approving the project, but completely dismissing Ishida's own plot scenario. This man was done *really* dirty, on the adaptation side (don't even get me started with the :re anime...). Still crossing my fingers for a proper reboot. Ishida Sui deserves it. Also, check out his current series, Choujin X!
I love the part whenever I scroll down the youtube comment section and I read the "original" cringe comment, "It's cringe time" and start cringing all over youtube. This is truly the most dead joke that refuses to die.
I watched Root A in 7th grade and thought it was pretty good. Everyone said it was shit compared to the manga but everyone says that. I got the Tokyo Ghoul box set in Christmas 2019, so I read some volumes before taking a break. During Coronacation, I thought "I might as well keep reading the manga. Don't have to go to school." I kept reading and finally got to the second half; I was still skeptical because how much better could it be? Jesus Christ, it is phenomenal. It's unreal how a manga could be fucked up so poorly by a studio. I'm rereading it now and I can't believe how epic this part is in the manga
@@carloscauan7967 to add onto this I believe Root A was also meant to be an alternative take on the second half, with Kaneki making the choice of joining Aogiri Tree. Ishida specifically wanted it to be different from the manga.
@@TaskSetter I was gonna ask why but if the author insisted they do something different then that makes sense I suspect he wanted to be surprised? That would be a selfish request, but understandable One of the saddest things about being part of entertainment is inevitably getting spoiled unlike the audience
@@nelisezpasce The thing is that it's not just that the author wanted a different story. Author apparently wrote full draft on it which the studio and product team barely managed to adapt. Root A is basically missing big chunks of what the author wanted.
What u mean the anime was amazing they give us both human and ghoul prospective and good plot all it lack is the engaging cinematic scenes like Chainsaw man
I doubt Gigguk is gonna see this comment but I just want to say thank you for making a video about TG. It's the first manga I actually read and even though it deserved better than what the anime gave us I still gotta give props because if it wasn't for how root A mishandled the story I wouldn't have read the manga. Hope more fans of the anime who loved the story but didn't understand or lost interest because of the anime give the manga a chance.
since the reason you read it was √A, did you continue on from S1 ending or just decided to read from the start? if the latter, would you say it's worth doing so?
Tokyo ghoul was the manga that got me into manga. Ishida’s art conveys complex emotions on paper in a way I’ve never seen before, it literally has you feeling the same thing the characters are feeling. To see his art transform throughout the series is also just so incredible. And not just that but the passion and pain in his writing left me in tears many times throughout the story! Other people in the comments have said it better but Ishida really put everything into this story and it shows. I hope his work continues to impact those who find it, thank you for getting it out there again! Cheers!
Book readers sometimes are snobs, but this.... This is something else You have never seen before? It portrays as much emotions as normal text. For example metro 2033 it has book amount of text and illustrations from time BUT I DO NOT TREAT IT AS A GLORIFIED COMIC BOOK
When I first read the manga myself, something about how the fighting scenes were drawn made them feel unique. I was genuinely surprised by how good it looked
@@GreMLinSLoveCoOkies i dont think thats true for all the fights tho, usually its balanced out with cool art and dynamic poses but yea it can be hard to follow exactly
@@LizardKingRequiem I think Ishida's problem was that he relied too much on pure white speed/motion lines, which just makes certain fight scenes look a bit disorienting.
Yea I was just talking about how pierrot looks to be doing well with bleach and that they NEED to remake the abomination they've created with re: especially. Whoever/the group who was in charge of deadlines and dates to finish the sequels of tokyo ghoul were stupid idk how these people get these jobs and fail so badly, like changing the route of the story or compressing hundreds of chapters into 12-24 episodes?
It crushes my soul that Re dropped off so hard in the second half. Ishida wrote about being completely burned out after the final chapter released but just kept going due to the pressure he felt to continue. I really wish he took a long break and resumed the manga a year or two after getting himself some downtime. The ending was good, but getting there’s was rough.
@@alerav4826 that actually sounds about right. I think I remember that being a line in his letter. I haven’t read the letter since the the final chapter released so I don’t know for sure tho
It wouldn't really matter all that much as to which studio did it. Best hope it that it had a good team and overall better planning from the production comittee, along with airing at a late timeslot to avoid major censorship.
Bro why are people suddenly acting like A1 is a good studio? What happened? What changed in the last decade for the memes about how mediocre they were to go away?
I read the whole manga series (aside from a few side stories) and loved it! The main sell for me was the art, but the story was cool too. Once I watched the anime, I immediately felt depressed. They really fumbled the ball with it. One of my main complaints was the changed ending. I don’t remember how the anime ended, but I remember that it felt nowhere near as satisfying as the ending of the manga.
I know right? It’s such a great feeling of validation when they admit you’re right! Kinda like Promised Neverland. 9 times out of 10, the manga/visual novel is better than the anime adaptation (unless it’s ufotable).

THIS, Tokyo Ghoul is one of the few manga where the art style completely suits the tone and theme of the story. While I'm sad to admit this, Sui's latest work Choujin X was nowhere near good compared to TG since I feel the artstyle doesn't fits the theme so far. While there are great manga out there without great art, a great art could really improve the depth of the story. TG was one of the rare case where the art and the story was match made in heaven.
@@Username-cs1bi I personally think it's too early to tell, but I do agree that the story is somewhat weak right now in comparison to Tokyo Ghoul, and doesn't exactly fit with the art. But I think Sui Ishida is again, focusing on developing the characters and liking to take his time, and personally, I think he's having more fun writing Choujin X than Tokyo Ghoul, especially with the comedy involved. I just read for what it is, just a fun but can be dark manga, which I think is how Ishida's approaching it.
The first season is pretty solid even if some details are skipped it was still on track to properly adapot the events of the manga. Then they literally just did whatever the f they wanted dissapointing pretty much everyone.

The good things that came out of the anime were the songs used for OPs and EDs, where all bands were curated by the mangaka (he recommended österreich, aka Kunimitsu Takahashi to write the second OP and last ED for it since he liked Kunimitsus band "the cabs" which broke up in 2013, ended up giving birth to österreich, my favorite japanese band) and the general OST of it.
Yutaka Yamada's score, especially in Re:, is probably some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard and my biggest takeaway from the anime. When I read the manga I just put on the set of movements he made and it was like a perfect pairing 🙌
Yeah, thanks to the anime i've found about the manga (and enjoyed it a lot) and Ling tosite sigure, which is one of my favourite japanese bands (as well as the other music groups)

honestly yes thank you so much. I watched the anime when i was 14 and thought it was cool. it wasnt until years later where i just randomly decided to start reading the manga, because my local library had it. I fell in love with the story. I became obsessed with it actually despite it being grotesque and horrifying i could only describe it as beautiful. I rewatched the anime with my roommate and found myself being so angry at just how awful the adaptation was and that was only season one. when I saw season 2 episode 1 I literally lost it and said I cant do this anymore and stopped watching. Tokyo ghoul remains one of my all time favorite manga and I've even started collecting the series. I pray for a reboot bc this series definitely deserves so much better. I have one wish, and I want to preface that Im fully aware of this studios workload and mistreatement and I am not wishing to put more stress on the animators. But as of what is currently existing right now, I feel like Mappa would be the only ones that can truly capture that deranged and unease feeling you get from certain panels. I feel like mappa could truly do justice with an anime adaptation. but of course, I wish for the animators health and safety above all else. Its simply a small wish
Tokyo Ghoul needs a remake ? No, not really. It's not manga accurate, but it's still good. Berserk tho...that needs a remake. Original series, artstyle and animations were awesome, but new one...it sucks and it desperately needs remake (if they made it same as original anime artstyle, then that would be great).
I really need to get into this manga. I don’t know why they felt the need to mush and rush Tokyo ghoul re together. it definitely felt like way too much was going on but I still enjoyed it
at the end of the last manga book the author wrote saying that he was feeling stress and trapped by writing the series (starting around Tokyo Ghoul vol.7, 25 volumes before the series ended) this was probably the main reason for rushing
@@Digger-NickI’m late to this and I’m not gonna argue but the fact you are even comparing the anime to it’s manga counterpart is crazy. Anime is such a shit dumpster fire of trash I hate it so much. Manga even if you consider it trash it’s still leagues better. I’d be more entertained staring at my poop in a toilet than the anime, it’s even bad at being a basic recap past season 1, and even if it was decent it would still fail at being a recap. I could almost rather wipe my butt with sandpaper like Kondo in Gintama than watch the re seasons aswell. Also the animation is not that good and I don’t like artstyle for anime. Music is good atleast, but too much would go in or happen while it’s playing to even appreciate it. One of my favorite parts of the series that the anime didn’t really portray well was Kaneki slowly coming to terms with his suppressed/distorted memories of his childhood trauma. The story isn’t just about him coming to terms with being a ghoul but also coming to terms with being seriously abused as a kid. This series did a phenomenal job of blurring lines between what’s good and what’s evil and makes you really question what that means. That’s why this manga meant a lot to me. The anime was just an embodiment of “Last Resort” by Papa Roach 🙄
Tomorrow’s the 10 anniversary. Instead of a new anime adaptation/remake, they lied to us by giving us an art exhibition. Tokyo Ghoul definitely deserved better.
To me, in :Re the whole "I know it's not stylish, but live" Is some of the most powerful imagery, panel work and message I've gotten reading manga over the years, still get goosebumps and sentimental about it
I know it's late and irrelevant but that moment is still my number one favorite moment/panel in TG:re. He'll it's actually my favorite moment in the whole story.

I hope one day we get the FMA:B treatment and the manga gets the adaptation it deserves. I’ll forever remember this series. Touka is best girl, and I’m glad she and Kaneki are happy.

i think the bigger problem with tokyo ghoul anime is that when u try to do a character driven drama, but skip all the small bits that gives the weight to their action, it really falls apart.
i'm just re-reading the manga once again. *man* they did Ishida Sui dirty. It's so rare for a manga of this scale and quality to come out. And I realised it was one of his first major publications, in which case it is incredibly impressive that a single person, on their first time writing a full length work, was able to conjure a story with this level of world building and depth. The first season wasn't even bad, but the complete fumbling of s2 sealed the deal. The story diverged too much to ever meet again. I didn't even bother watching RE. Tokyo ghoul is probably among the top 10 manga of the last 20 years, easily on par with Attack on Titan or Demon Slayer. It would have reached the same level of success if they'd done it properly. Most people talk to, who've only seen the anime, find it very weird when I compare tokyo ghoul to attack on titan. True, the anime don't even compare. One is a good adaptation, one was a mess.
the tokyo ghoul manga is one of the best pieces of media i've ever come across. the art is stunning, the story is fcking incredible, the characters are interesting and layered, there's sick plot twists and if you have a soul you will cry throughout a good chunk of it. give it a try if you haven't already 11/10
Dude how the story can be incredible i can not understand i finished the manga so long ago and it was shit like everyone one shoting each other and kaneki one shoting that strong peoples anything can not be understandable in the series like new ccg's half ghouls, kaneki's the biggest kagune at the end they are all meaningless and unexplained
One of greatest manga I've ever read. When last chapter starts with exactly same words as first chapter ends I just started crying. One of best parts are characters mental breakdowns, especially Kaneki's breakdowns. So much raw emotions. To this day I can't forgive for what they made of S2... At time of premiere of this season I was reading TG:re manga so it was like punch in the face. Same with re anime adaptation... And fun fackt from anime: TK from Ling Toiste Sigure made first and last opening for the series, and Unravel starts and ends with exactly same words... Masterpiece
I love Tokyo Ghoul because the introspective parts showcase a deep emotional turmoil that wasn't unlike the shit I was going through at the time. Kaneki's desperate want to die in such a way to make those he cared about love him is exactly what I felt. Scared to die in a way that those I love wouldn't forgive me. And my will to live was similarly brought back by something as stupid and ridiculous as love.

The manga is one of the most hauntingly beautiful rides I have been on that only a few manga have done (Berserk and AoT come to mind.) I hope one day a remake can really show how amazing it is
Have you read everything up till the Re finale? I remember reading it weekly years ago, and man, I was really disappointed. Maybe it was because reading and comprehending a story like Tokyo Ghoul's on a weekly basis is borderline impossible, but I remember being completely burnt out after the final Aogiri arc, and then the Dragon stuff and Furuta really just left a bad taste in my mouth. As soon as Kaneki spontaneously changed hair colors for the fifth time I started feeling as though the author was just making shit up along the way, and then the clown kakuja showed up and I just wished the story could go back to its roots. I understand power scaling and broadening of scope are musts for a (technically) shounen story, but the fact that half the cast was a One Eyed Ghoul by the end, and Eto could apparently just be dealt with offscreen by Furuta didn't sit right with me. Half the characters from the new squads were either completely underdeveloped or outright annoying too, and for some reason they tended to take up way too much screentime. I don't know, just felt as if the Re manga really lost its touch along the way. Do you think I would enjoy reading it more now that it's all finished? Was the ending any good? Does the "CCG higher ups are actually ghouls" twist make any sense in retrospect? Are Ghouls ever shown eating human meat again?
If we ever get a remake, I hope the staff from 86 gets involved as they've shown they can do visual metaphors, symbolisms and parallels which are big things I loved about the TG manga
Pretty much the only one I've watched actually succeeding with that stuff, so whenever I read stories like this and 86, I wish for this one team to work on its anime adaptation or for it to not have an anime adaptation at all.

For me it was what Garnt showed in the video, with Takizawa writing his will. Even in the anime it was damn powerful and harsh.

The best thing about the anime is the ost in general in my opinion. But "Unravel" especially
We cannot talk about Tokyo Ghoul, without mentioning the famous piano arrangement of "unravel" by Animenz, the most influential ani-pianist of all time.

I truly believe that this piano arrangement made a substantial contribution to Tokyo Ghoul's popularity and to the reputation of the ani-piano community.

As in your read a recap for root A?
Root is season 2 of the anime so what exactly did you read?
Here are the links to the drafts I managed to find:
sunset-tower.tumblr.com/post/129424575942/thank-you-so-much-for-you-post-about-the-anime
sunset-tower.tumblr.com/post/129418629852/ishidas-root-a-storyboard-drafts-are-so-fun-to
sunset-tower.tumblr.com/post/129451544167/how-does-tatara-make-kaneki-to-eat-her-corpse-and
This led to the anime-manga community creating the narrative that Pierrot ignored Ishida's drafts of √A when making the anime.
Link to interview: www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/88fddm/im_shuhei_morita_the_director_of_anime_series/
Before I talk about the interview, I needed to clarify a few things about the nature of √A. When √A was announced after Season 1 aired, it was advertised as a season based on Ishida's original story concept that deviates from the manga. The drafts are proof of this because they showed scenes that were not in the manga.
www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-10-11/tokyo-ghoul-2nd-anime-season-video-teases-new-story-by-creator/.79825
The reason why I am saying this is that a major criticism about √A is it not following the manga, whereas it was Ishida himself who wanted √A to deviate from the manga.
In the case of Tokyo Ghoul √A, here are the main producers:
- Marvelous
- TC Entertainment
- Pierrot
Now you are probably thinking: "Pierrot is on the production committee so they should have some responsibility in how the √A story was handled".

It always makes me sad that Tokyo ghoul got shafted in the way it did.

I would not blame the studio for this one. This is more so a case of poor management from the production comittee and executive producers involved.

I think that either Ufotable or Mappa could definitely make a faithful art style to the manga.
There is one reason I went ham-crazy collecting all of the Sui Ishida art cards I could from that Manga. I have a huge collection of his work all tokyo ghoul related just because it was so unique and different.
@@Username-2 RE is the best part about the Manga lol; tsukiyama's Family eradication, Auction, and Cochlea are all stellar arcs and some of the best in all of animanga. Dragon war is a bit rushed yet still has one of the best antagonistic forces.
As a diehard Tokyo Ghoul fanboy, you have no idea how happy this video makes me. Like you said the TG manga never read as "Edgy" to me so it makes me sad when I see people label the entire series as it
At least the anime gave us an incredible range of top tier music.

Thank you for making this video! Tokyo Ghoul is definitely one of my favourite manga. Kaneki's journey was both painful and wonderful and I'm glad I got to witness it. Seeing his relationship with Touka and Rize slowly evolve over time was a treat to read and one of my favourite aspects of the story.
Crossing my fingers for a future Tokyo Ghoul anime remake 🤞
If we ever get a remake, I hope the staff from 86 gets involved as they've shown they can do visual metaphors, symbolisms and parallels which are big things I loved about the TG manga
Absolutely
That would be great
Pretty much the only one I've watched actually succeeding with that stuff, so whenever I read stories like this and 86, I wish for this one team to work on its anime adaptation or for it to not have an anime adaptation at all.
A thousand times yes
The creator of Tokyo Ghoul, Sui Ishida, is writing a new manga called Choujin X, and the art and story is just as incredible
