Yeah it was really well done! With the eyes shivering. And when you are going insane even more, the whole body shivering. But why exactly does the body shiver when you are going down the road of cyberpychosis? Was David's Sandevistan activating all while he was shivering? What do you guys think causes those eye shiverings?
Also a common theme in cyberpychosis seems to be thinking about your past. For example, Maine fought about his past when he was a soilder and almost no cyberware.
I think he walked to night city on foot and that is why we saw that road.
And david also sees his past layed on top of the things actually going. The past with his mother.

He achieved those dreams in the most broken, ironic, self-defeating ways possible. He stood atop Arasaka Tower as a gangster on a suicide mission, which is not at all what his mother wanted. He lived up to Maine's legacy as another chromed out cyber psycho. He saved Lucy and sent her to the moon when he had finally become more important to her than any lunar vacation.

One of the rules of a cyberpunk setting is that life is moving so fast that the characters can't ever seem to find a moment to catch their breath. There's intentionally no downtime in the story as that's part of the setting. In night city people live fast and die young. And yet... underneath that there's a beautiful concept. (spoilers) The anime is about two people, David and his mother stretching themselves to the absolute limit to give the person that they love most the moon. That impossible to reach place that only exists in dreams.

A lot of the reason it hit so hard for me is bc we rarely get well-made tragedy these days, esp in more mainstream media. The ending is sad, for sure, but it's cathartic. It's a safe sorrow the way that horror movies are a safe terror. Too often stories go for tragedy and end up in motiveless grimdark and it's exhausting.
I once heard a lecture where someone said that the great appeal of tragedy is to see terrible things happen to people you're supposed to empathize with and see yourself in, and that the catharsis comes from seeing someone's life go horribly wrong and still have the author hold your hand and tell you 'this story mattered. even though it had a sad ending it still mattered. even if you don't succeed your attempts matter.' Grimdark tells you that the world sucks and nothing you do matters, well-written tragedy tells you that sometimes the world sucks but everything you do matters so so much, your story is still worth telling even if you never achieve that happy ending or if you lose it along the way. People have inherent value and their stories deserve to be told no matter if they turn out okay or not and in a reality that has no concept of 'fair' that shit just hits good man!!! feels good!!!!! it's COMFORTING (

Well said. I like grimdark to a degree, depending on how you define it, but I think the word you were going for there is "nihilism". And you're absolutely right about Edgerunners--it's a tragedy, for sure, but it is a very well-told one, and it is not nihilistic. That's the thing I love about the world of Cyberpunk, the Cyberpunk 2077 game, and this anime--it is dark, and it shows darkness and depravity for what it is, but it celebrates characters who don't give in to all of that, even if they struggle terribly and don't very often succeed. There is beauty in that kind of portrayal of life.

I felt like the production and how trigger handled it was absolutely phenomenal,l. But the story felt lacking. Like, even though there is this whole backstory element, it just exemplifies that his entire life revolves around edgerunning, with no real reason as to why.
And this scene felt wrong to me just because I wasn’t that connected to the characters, as there isn’t really any time given to understand them in any way. Nor are many of them given any real intrigue except maine. Even the though the framing is just unparalleled, the substance of it just Isn’t there. Which is really a shame, because of how good everything looks and feels.

I feel people want Cyberpunk to be way more cynical than it actually is - and are somehow enjoying this implanted pessimism. But it's not really that bleak... [SPOILERS] Anime literally ends with Lucy embracing the light. Someone seeing that ending and thinking it's NOT deeply optimistic is a bit weird to me.
Also... Despite the quote you shared, most of game's endings are also optimistic. One that is not comes with the game actually booing you for your decisions. Night City is often described as a prison, Lucy even calls it a 'prison of light'. Of course, it's not an actual prison of body, but one of soul. People can't escape it not because it's impossible to just get out of it, but because they are chasing something self-destructive inside of it. For some it's just about monetary reasons so essential to this hyper-capitalist dystopia. That's why every ending that presents characters being able to get out is highly symbolic - they are finally free. If that's not a great closure, what is...
Cyberpunk is not very subtle. Everything it wants to say is fairly transparent, that's why I'm a bit baffled by this forced nihilism.
P.S: Sorry, Bird Boi, this was not aimed specifically at you, but to many-many comments made in this vein I saw on the web. Cheers! ^^

one thing I want to point out, David pretty early on in the show actually developed cyberpsychosis. On the official wiki for cyberpunk it states one of the first symptoms is feeling abnormal or like you're different or superior to others. David right after being able to use the sandevistan basically has this mindset, which means right from the get go he was developing symptoms.

It would have made more sense for individuals with lots of cybernetics to take anti psychotic injections and medications like invega in addition to their immune suppressants that would have been a nice touch. Though it would mean the psychosis is treatable which takes away the terminal illness vibes the show was giving.

I genuinely believe this is one of, if not the best, more mature aimed anime in the last 10 years. The topics it touches are easily translated to modern equivalents to make it relatable and at the same time, a thrilling romance tragedy. I've also never seen anime handle casual nudity in such an adult way, practically ignored in most scenes that it's involved in. This and the genuine romance that grows throughout the show in a way no silly fan-service filled harem "romance" ever could. The industry needs to make a conscious shift to start churning out more content like this for the now adults that started watching as young teens in the 90s.
TLDR: 10/10 masterpiece that the entire industry needs to take notes on. bravo to trigger, best work yet.

Also for those who haven't played the game like Gigguk there are so many small details that are hype if you catch them. There are main quest NPCs from the game that you can find in the show. Everything that was shown in the show is playable in the real game. Guns, augments, even some of the exact same locations that are seen in the show can be visited in game. The music as well shows up in game (I'm specifically thinking about "I really want to stay at your house" where you can hear it on the radio on just on the street. Really has me on the verge of tears every time). The thing that shocked me most was the fact that at The Afterlife (a bar where mercs can find fixers) there's a drink called David Martinez (the main character in cyberpunk). The fact that this is significant is because many mercs live to make a name for themselves (like Lucy said "It's not about how you live it's about how you die" or the last line from the Ripperdoc about David going to make a name for himself), meaning the acts and reputation of David made him into a legend.

It's not just the metal being jammed into your body, it's the entire city and system around you that's breaking you down.
It seems like an allegory for drug addiction, well also considering they have to be constantly on drugs to even run or else they just go insane. Someone who's down and desperate like David was at his lowest in the first episodes will usually turn to some form of substance to null the pain and get through everything. They then will want more and more as just a little stops working for them.
You could even see cyberpsychosis as overdosing since you're practically dead at that point, you're just standing there to take as many people as you can with you, a thought some people at the end of their rope have. To go out with a bang and try and show the system is busted, that is reflected even in the line "It doesn't matter how you lived, it matters how you die." (forgot the exact quote).
Just my idea of it, having dealt with addiction before this is pretty similar... except for the whole turning my arms into tank buster cannons.

I'm still getting bugs, and the gameplay could be better, but just like The Witcher 3, it's not the gameplay that's particularly good. It's the story and world the game puts you in.

They're great at worldbuilding, writing stories, characters and even at building hype (which backfired with Cyberpunk), but I will be waiting for the game after patches, expansion, some mods (current devkit is kinda weak, and given that they're changing engine, maybe that will create more options for modding).
