How did you manage to make an outside recording sound like a studio recording?

    • @sveintollefsen1448
      @sveintollefsen1448  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you for a very good question. With our very simple recording equipment, outdoor recordings are frequently ruined by wind. So to improve the sound quality, we also recorded the same song in our library home studio, and replaced the "outdoor sound" with the "indoor sound". This probably sounds quite simple, but requires a 100% synchronisation, which is not so simple, and took a lot of practice and repeated attempts. The end product, however, wasn't so bad, although the live performance of the same song he did inside a church a couple of months later was even better. (This was the performance that won the gold prize in the "World Classical Music Awards 2023" just recently, also available here on this TH-cam channel.)

@@sveintollefsen1448 I figured that you had done something like that! 🙂
It's incredibly difficult to do. The alternative would be to use a carefully concealed earplug and then mime the words. I agree with you wholeheartedly about the more recent performance, in which he is performing from the heart to a much greater extent.

@@Toxophilus Thank you very much. We have tried miming in the past, but found that it does not produce the natural expressions you do whilst singing for real.

You are very right. He was only 14 at the time, just after the voice change from boy soprano, and has developed substantially since then. Fortunately, he has good teachers who guide him well on his path towards his real voice. It's gently coming out now. 🙂

I agree! He is too young for Sarastro's aria. He has a good raw material that can be developed. Doubtful if he will be the bass? Have him sing songs to concentrate mainly on intonation, equalization and technique. The most important thing is to sing well and beautifully when you are developing and then take it from there.

@@sveintollefsen1448 It is part of the singing profession that different professional judges do not always agree. Then we also have different knowledge and background when we judge. This young singer should start from his most beautiful sounding notes and build his voice from them. In the recording, it is clear that he (14 years old) is not ready for Sarastro's aria. Material is one thing, maturity, development, musical insight and technique another. The voice he was born with is good material but must be developed in the right way. We want singers who sing beautifully and in the right repertoire, right? Surely no one is happy with raw notes without equalization just because the singer can "sing"? For what it's worth, I have the equivalent of 2 years at music high school, 4 years singing teacher, 4 years singing soloist and 2 years diploma training. I have worked as a singing teacher and concert singer all my adult life and still sing even though I am retired. I had not put Sarastro's aria in the hands of a 14-year-old and above all not recorded it and posted it on TH-cam. If you think ahead, isn't it certain that the young man will be so happy about the recording in 10 years?

Thank you once again Tommy for all your good advise, they are highly valued and appreciated, and above all, highly respected. As stated before in this "debate forum", this was the very first attempt to explore the deeper bass ranges, and we made into a fun Easter project shooting a music video. Moreover, it was also part of the training in preparation for the upcoming trials to get accepted into the regional talent programme for classical music here in Norway, where he would perform this and other classical arias, and for which he subsequently succeeded. It quickly became a success, and both himself and his teachers, former professional opera singers themselves specialising in the BelCanto technique, was inspired and motivated to improve it further, and already 2 months later, he did a LIVE version of the aria, also here on this TH-cam channel, where all the technical details he had already been practising very hard for a long time, suddenly came out and in the right place. But we all agree of course that this first version was very immature and full of technical errors, but these Easter projects are a well established tradition here in our family, from which we have much fun, whilst simultaneously making sure he gets a lot of good training sessions in a week where everyone else is on holiday (including his teachers).
But all of this is more than a year ago now, and he has continued to practice this aria, and as he continues to develop both technically and physically, he also does it better every time, but there is of course still a long way to go. He also did the other Sarastro's aria, "In diesen heil'gen Hallen" with a local symphony orchestra earlier this year, which can also be found on this channel, and which is even more techically challenging. It is truly a great inspiration to perform from the greatest music genious the world has ever seen, Mozart, and not the least, from "The magic flute". 🙂

@@sveintollefsen1448 Of course, a young teenager taking on an aria intended for mature well-trained bass singers is a crowd pleaser. But I, as an educator, should not look for easy "victories". My responsibility is to look to the future and the best for the adept. A well-known former gossoprano, Aleksander Rykkvin, has been helped to choose the right path for a future sustainable and successful development. He has, after the goal break, gone through good-sounding little songs and lieder. Recently I heard him in Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin" and everything sounds arranged and good. Who of Aleksander or Bjørn was born with the greatest vocal material, I can't tell from recordings on TH-cam? But Aleksander has been helped to choose a wiser, more vocally hygienic, path towards becoming a successful singer. And on that road, it's not just about what we can "sound" now, but even more about HOW we sound - in the future. They can be rewarding for singing teachers and parents to showcase a child who can sing an aria for mature well-honed voice. But it is not the teacher or the parent who should be judged here, but Bjørn. If he continues to sing, he should be satisfied with the contribution Sarastro made when he was 14 years old. Feel free to listen to the singing of Sarastro's aria by well-trained singers. There are several good ones to choose from here on TH-cam. Finally, I add that I don't think you should put Bjørn in a voting box yet. Finally: It turns out how and where he belongs vocally when his voice has matured and gained a stable technique to work from.

He has good vocal material to develop but a singing teacher should let him sing baritone repertoire in a lyrical middle position, work on equalization and timbre.

Thank you for very good advise Tommy. His vocal teachers work with him on this on a nearly daily basis, with a lot of emphasis on techical training to develop the middle and higher ends of the vocal range. This, however, was the very first attempt on exploring the deeper bass range, which seems to be turning out quite successful. Learning all along, this aria was considerably improved from here over the subsequent months, already at the LIVE performance some 2 months later, which earned him the gold medal at the World classical music awards 2023. But still a long way to go. 🙂

Thank you very much KELTUS_ WARRIOR. Good point, this was actually a studio recording a few months earlier than the LIVE recording. It is generally easier to get it techically right in a studio compared to a LIVE performance. Although the continued development was also noticeable even during those few extra months too. 🙂

Nice try. He should stop doing this now. He's terribly, terribly out of tune and it's probably not doing his voice any good doing this material. He should just go get a teacher and stop showing off. One day he could be great. But please. Not. yet.

Thank you for your advise. I am sorry to hear that you consider this as terribly out of tune and just showing off. Fortunately, many others have a different opinion, and support and appreciate the musicality he is expressing, even at this early age. I can assure you that he has dedicated vocal teachers and pedagogues, themselves former professional opera singers, which work with him on this on a near daily basis, with a lot of emphasis on techical training to develop his voice and vocal ranges. Although this was the very first attempt on exploring the deeper bass range, a long way from perfection but continously learning and developing all along, this aria was considerably improved from here over the subsequent months, already at the LIVE performance some 2 months later, see separate video on this channel, this earned him several first prizes in international classical music competitions.

I think Zarastro is not for you voice and, what is much important not for your age, try Papageno's second "Ein Medhen oder Weibhen" from the same opera its not so low, and also not so high, simething middle i think ii will be better for you.
    Good luck.

Thank you for your advise. Mathias is a bass-baryton and has already done the Papageno Papagena duet and Ein Vogelfänger bin Ich ja from this opera previously, although as part of the process to expand his vocal ranges in both ends further, his teachers wanted him to explore the deeper ranges of bass arias, hence testing the Sarastro arias (he also did In diesen heilg'en Hallen after this). The working plan is that expanding to deeper ranges also paves the way to expand the higher ranges as well, and so far he has managed to produce a kontra C sharp. And as explained several times elsewhere in this "debate forum", this particular video was our Easter project last year, primarily for fun, but also as preparations to upcoming trials to a regional talent programme later that same spring. He has improved this aria substantially since this first attempt, see other versions on this channel, earning him several gold medals in international classical music competitions during the last year. 🙂
