    The original Navy towing tank was installed at the Washington Navy Yard down the street from Nat's stadium in 1896 by David Taylor. The model basin building still exists and is currently an annex to the U.S. Navy Museum.

    We've had a lot of testing facilities for the last century. My father was in charge of the hypersonic wind tunnels at Lockheed, (they called them the hot shot wind tunnel) where they tested models to 25K and above. Then he went and did the same thing at Ocean systems, their Lumph tanks. But what has really changed is that so much less of that needs to be done, so much more can be done and projected by computer now. With the advent years ago of computers capable of such modeling, then a lot less testing has to be done, only when you are much closer to a final design. What we have seen in the last 30 years, is nothing compared to what we will see in the next 30... In the last 10 generations, we as a country have gone from fighting the British with Muskets, to traveling to the moon in 8 generations, to now be ready to travel to Mars in the next generation. We currently can't imagine how we will leave this solar system, but then 2 1/2 generations ago we didn't really have computers either.

    Maybe it's just me, but based on the convergent designs of both rail guns in conjunction with GPS-guided projectiles in current use, it makes me think that the U.S. Military's prime objective is to be able to launch a cost-effective projectile with as much velocity as possible while having an onboard guidance system capable of withstanding the internal shock of a high-G launch and adjusting to target in-flight with extremely high-accuracy.
    An accurately-guided railgun shell is sure to spawn nightmares for anyone on the receiving end.

    What exactly do you mean when you say "The ships (nimitz class aircraft carriers) can cover up to 700 miles in a 1/2 hour". It would be impossible for any ship to sail at 1400 miles per hour, so I am hoping you meant something other than the speed it can travel.

    • @charleslacombe8325
      @charleslacombe8325 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I had the same question.... idk what kind of Algebra equation that can give you 700 miles . +or- 15 miles in any direction.
      15 squared =225 so unless your including a third axis as floating atop 30,000'(6 miles deep)of water it doesn't cover 700 miles.

    • @karmakaze6694
      @karmakaze6694 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-qo5fd4ej3v That is still not really what is said though - "could be anywhere within a 700 square mile area" would be accurate. "covers 700 square miles" is not.
      The thing is, it is a ridiculous concept anyway. Based on what was said it can only ever be 15 miles from its initial position and at most 30 miles from any point on the 15 mile radius circle around that initial position. That is, even if the carrier was on the direct opposite side of the circle from a searcher, it would be at most 30 miles away.
      This massive aircraft carrier would be visible to the naked eye from any aircraft within 30 miles, let alone radar equipped ships or aircraft. Put simply, even when corrected, it sounds impressive but really isn't.
      But here is the important part - The carrier can maintain a speed of 30+ KNOTS. That's a speed measured in nautical miles per hour, not miles per hour. The radius of the circle would actually be over 17 miles, not 15 miles. It doesn't make much difference to whether or not it would be easily found.
      It is simply not accurate to say it can "hide in the open ocean by covering up to 700 square miles of distance in just half an hour" - not even close.

    • @OdinsVikingr
      @OdinsVikingr ปีที่แล้ว

      700 square miles or about 528 square nautical miles. Runs approximately 23 nautical miles per hour or 11.5 nautical miles per half hour. Still pretty fast seeing as the ship weighs more than 100,000 tonnes.

    1,000 x $20k suicide drones each with 50kg high explosive. Then x10 standard cruise missiles. $25B Carrier strike group sunk for $50 million with no casualties. Just stating the obvious. Iranian HESA Shahed range > 1,000 km.

    Considered all the results and document already stolen by Chinese hacker according to US claims, I would rate its opponent as the more genius side, training bunch of spy and hacker should be much cheaper.

    Perhaps he meant 700 hundred miles in half a (day) not half a (hour). That would be roughly 51 knots or so.

      700 square miles or about 528 square nautical miles. Runs approximately 23 nautical miles per hour or 11.5 nautical miles per half hour. Still pretty fast seeing as the ship weighs more than 100,000 tonnes.
