Hi there, so as I mentioned at the start of this video. It's all my own opinion and is completely subjective. Ranking combat in video games is the hardest thing to do out of all of the stuff to rank as it factors based on you as a player, your own preferences, your own style of fighting, and also how enjoyable it is to you. There will be people that will say ACSyndicate has the best combat, whereas I have it dead last in this video. So yeah, have a great day, stay safe!💜

I haven't played odyssey so I can't rank it, but there's a lot of people that love it. I was upset they didn't really do much in ac Valhalla for sneaky builds like going prone and other stuff with so many skills that said I think the combats more fun and better than origins. To me Valhalla origins and because of opinions of a lot of friends that playing odyssey you feel the most like a bada** those 3 belong in top 3 in my opinion. I haven't played mirage yet.

Have you played these on MAX difficulty? I haven't completed most of them. I'm wondering if AC3 would be even better if you had max difficulty and limited HUD? with Ubisoft games I like to clear out the HUD, it gets very immersive and you are playing in a seek, analyze and react FLOW other than the see heavy guy ICON, dodge, kick, slash slash.
I don't enjoy the Batman games as much because I was just reacting to the ICONS and not my positioning and weapons. I think I like AC UNITY the most.

I agree but also completely understand why they did it. I would probably not buy "not AC" Valhalla. TBH I was done with the series when AC Unity crashed for me and i lost like 50h save. To that point i played all the games and were buying they when they came out but with all those bugs in Unity i was done and didnt play syndicate until 2022 when i got huge promotion on all games (for about 100$ i had all from AC to AC odyssey) and my GF said that origins is really good and they fixed a lot of stuff in Unity/syndicate. So we bough together with her Valhalla but only as next AC game and not as "Viking game" and i guess that huge part of their sales were similar to me.
TL;DR I dont like the fact that Eivor is label as Assassin but i understand it because i myself would probably not pick that game without AC branding

You didn't mention the "shock and awe" system in AC1, the best part in my opinion. When you kill an enemy brutally, another will get scared and become unable to defend themselves for a short time. When this happens you can obviously hit them but, less obvious, you can unlock and switch to the hidden blade to kill them. That will scare another so can keep doing it until you get hit or fail to get to the right guard.
Could be explained better but it is a lot of fun and takes a bit more skill than the kill chains in Brotherhood to Rogue.

    • @WideOldDan
      @WideOldDan ปีที่แล้ว +22

@user-zp3nn1ix4s it's toned down to just lower ranked guards running away. They also changed it to a points system where killing one would give an amount of points based on rank and it took more points to scare higher ranks.
AC1 is the only AC we can do this sort of chain kill.

I really liked the combat but idk if it is worth the first spot, sometimes it's just too confusing on whether or not you should atack, parry or break the enemy's defense. Also, some weapons were really a let down gameplay wise, like daggers having the same animations as hatchets, not to mention that the arrows were too short ranged and everytime you'd aim at someone's head, the arrow would go really slowly into their torso, which was awfully ugly. Guns were kinda disapointing too, they didn't look powerful enough and some would sound like they had a silencer on. But overall AC III really has great combat mechanics, really deserving of top 3.

Pretty good list, however, I completely disagree with Unity being above Origins. Unity's combat system is so terribly basic and uninteresting. You can equip different weapon types, but all of them basically play the same + realistically only the sword makes sense for an Assassin who needs to blend in. The combat is slow and floaty, enemies can shoot you with a gun and there's no way to reliably avoid damage, there are only a couple of enemy archetypes, and the finishers keep repeating over and over again. Furthermore, Unity lacks a lot of great features from previous games like: disarming enemies, fist fighting, using hidden blade in combat, throwing sand, throwing knives or doing any interesting special moves for that matter. It's just a boring vanilla system overall.
I would also rank Valhalla's combat higher, much closer to Origins than to Odyssey. When you disable all intrusive HUD elements and set damage to 200% in the settings, it's actually really smooth and immersive. There are a lot of finishers, the combat is weighty and brutal, there are cool special skills but they don't feel like magic, and there are opportunities to be creative. For example, you can use the rope to yank enemies off cliffs, into walls, over railing or to pull them towards you. You can throw a barrage of axes at someone. You can poison your weapon, including an arrow to deal poison damage. You can set people on fire and watch them panic. Valhalla also did some stuff BETTER than Origins. You have more moves! There's a powerful sprint attack, a sprint kick (heavy attack) that can knock people to the ground, you can stomp people on the ground + there are cool finishers you can perform on stunned enemies. You can even grab a freaking arrow mid-flight and throw it back! How cool is that? The combat system in Valhalla doesn't feel as polished and smooth as the one in Origins, but it comes pretty close, it offers a lot of great features, and overall it's much better than people give it credit.

I liked in AC1 the critical attacks when you hit the attack button as soon as you clash weapons or hit someone it caused an insta kill. It came back for 2 and I believe the Ezio games but they didn't feel as important as it was in the first game to take out enemies. In 2-4 I would try to get counter-kills but in 1 I was incentivized to attack and try to pull off these insta-kills to get rid of everyone faster.

Always loved the combat in AC1. Back in the day it looked so cool and it still does. I also like it how you don't really hit your enemy before the killing blow, outside of those rare few slices that could go through their guard and draw blood. It made the fighting look a bit more realistic. Visually very flashy. Never cared how easy or difficult the fighting was as long as it was fun and enjoyable to look at. Though the number one spot for myself would be either Unity or AC3. Unity just looks really nice while AC3 is just a lot of fun.

I agree with most things especially origins. It's amazing but people hate it since it's rpg. It is perfectly balanced between being a warrior and being challenging, fun animations, wide range of weapons, good music and reasonable boss fights.
However I heavily disagree with unity. I can appreciate the ideas but literally everything was poorly implemented even after the bug fixes, they should have kept it in development for longer. It's still very glitchy, he has the slowest sword swing in the series and is slower than real life, parrying does nothing, enimies have infinite stamina, they recover impossibly fast and break your block easily while you can't do the same, waaaaay too many guards so you get swarmed, over reliance on smoke bombs, no free aim in combat, BS systems galore such as people dodging every quickshot no matter what and it's not even close to being realistic like many people think it is. He does very wide swings and reaching for more hits, he leaves himself wide open, does stupid spinning attacks and the animations were often choppy and wouldn't even hit them. It's easily the worst combat in the franchise, it's not even a fun challenge like origins it's just a pain.

One thing about AC2 combat is how unbelievably frustrating fighting the larger spear-wielding opponents is.
They frequently block your attacks, so you really can’t do damage by just attacking them. In addition, I could never get the timing of counter killing on them right.
So the only consistent method of beating them was by disarming them, which was only possible when they attacked, meaning that you have to wait for them to attack, which they would sometimes take an enragingly long period of time to do during an encounter.

The main difference is in origins I've read there are technically no unparryable attacks, but they were difficult to pull of. I think a fair ranking would place the combat in odyssey near the combat in origins, since it is so similar but with extra features you don't have to spec into. If you play a stealth/ranged ability only, you'll barely notice the difference in their combat. Story and justifications for the combat system shouldn't be taken into account unless youre reviewing the game as a whole.

So on the notes for unity, there is a way to flow consistently like in the old games. Using a smoke or flash bomb and consistently switching targets continues your usually limited chain. on top of this, if the enemies are under level compared to you, you can hold attack to immediately do a finisher instead, allowing that instakill chain to remain present. Idk if this affects your ranking, but those two things made combat let you get creative even when it wasn't the game's main focus. Hope this helps if you ever want to play it again!

I cannot believe how overrated AC3's fighting system is. Yeah, it has pretty visuals, but that doesn't make it fun at all. It's EXTREMELY easy, the sensation of reward is completely missing since 95% of the fight is parry and counter, and that's it, with just one counter you can kill all enemies, and if you chain the attack button you can just wipe out 300 soldiers with just one button. Once, the game glitched and started to send me infinite enemies, I swear I was like 40 minutes just killing enemies without having a single hit. Also I felt it like a massive downgrade from the previous games, where fighting was actually difficult and you couldn't just kill anybody with one parry. I would like to know why people love this so much being so easy

I just replayed it and finished it at 100% and I feel that it had a lot of depth. There were multiple choices to use during a fight. Grabbing an enemy an tossing him away. Using a throwing knife to weaken him. Dodging and attacking.
Weakening a strong enemy, so then you can grab him, throw him away and execute him with the hidden blade while he is on the ground.
I just feel that it was very well done. Now im playing Ac2, which for years I thought it was a vast improvement over the first one. But... it just feels like a big downgrade :( they just removed everything from the combat and only left the counter attack and the dodge.
