    I'm working on a cars and science-based television show and we'd like to build a table top Prony Brake dyno like this. What force gauge are you using? And how exactly are you coupling it to the motor - meaning, which areas are pushing into the gauge when you hit the brake? Or - did you build this from a tutorial? Great videos, by the way. Love watching that car putter along, especially with the 212cc engine. Funny stuff.

    • @robotcantina8957
      @robotcantina8957  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My Prony brake dyno is a modern equivalent of the concept. Its hard to explain in words how it works, mostly because I use a complex bearing arrangement to float the torque arm. Hopefully soon I will do another dyno video and I will show how the system works. Basically the same thing can be built using bigger parts, Mine just so happens to be extremely compact and has a lower spinning mass. If you look at my charts, the low mass shows up as spikes in the data.

    Interesting. So at 2500rmp there's 8.1ft of torque and there's 3.85 HP. And if you calculated it actually has 7 HP then that means if you divide 7 by 3.85 that equals 1.81. So if you do 2500 times 1.81 that equals 4525. And if you do 8.1 times 1.81 that equals 14.6. Which means the engine has 7 HP and 14.6ft of torque at 4525 rmp. That seems right. 1.57. The peal horsepower and peak torque are at different rpms. This is almost always the case, except in some nitrous applications. Torque is higher on low-revving engines and horsepower is higher on high revving engines.
    9.7 ft/lbs is absolutely a believable claim on a 6.5hp engine. Torque always falls off after peak. Performance engines try to minimize the drop-off as rpms climb. That helps build higher horsepower as revs increase. If it maintained 9.7 ft/lbs at peak rpm, you showed yourself that it would make higher than 6.5hp.

    Have you seen those 196cc diesel engines? They're almost like converted Honda GX200 clones. They're rated at about 3hp and 6 foot pounds, but it appears that they're underrated based on a generator load test video I saw (put out 2.5kW of electricity from the generator). I bought one back in 2019 and it was 99 bucks and removed the governor and it was very powerful on a bicycle...it was crazy fast especially on the take off

    I had started working on something similar but ran out of $$$$ before i could get started. Im thinkingof following part of your plans in part and making a shaft flange that i can mount the original fly wheel and clutch set up too. But I'm thinking of using a small car pike a sentra or something, that is more readily available here. I'm thinking i will go with LEDs and try to find a way to run it with a lawnmower or motorcycle battery. I need a car and those go cart parts before i can start. Lol.

    The RPM at which you get max torque and the RPM you get max horsepower aren't often the same, and they're both different from the max RPM of the engine, so multiplying mixed numbers together doesn't get you anything.

    Not sure you can really determine whether its a value without at least taking it apart.

    I'm guessing about the same horsepower as a stock Honda Civic.

    I think a modern Honda CRF300L engine would be your sweet spot. Low maintenance, great mpg, small, reliable and sturdy. Would love to see something like that in your Insight lol. Probably would do freeway speeds fine and have insane mpg.

    Welp... TH-cam algorithms strike again! Not sure how I ended up here, but now that I'm here, I'm blasting through the rest of the Go-Kart upgrades.
    PS.. raisins in ANY baked confections are an affront to decent people across the globe.

    These engines are an incredible value. Probably because they copied the Honda GX but, well, they're an incredible value! It's amazing you can get something like this for $100 (with coupon).

    This was the non-hemi version. It would be interesting to see you do the hemi version and compare their results side-by-side but I imagine theres probably little to no change

    Maximum Torque gives max efficiency not max power. Spec for my car has max torque at 1500RPM but it has max power at about 4500RPM. So I think the HP is going to be based on the Max RPM and not 2500RPM.

    Test again with 91?
    If I remember correctly, there's something about the Octane rating in the states versus what's available overseas and as a result, this engine is best suited to run on our 91 octane.
