Ah.. Good Morning Sir Matt ... the famous Frenchie almost a beaded pheasant tail nymph without the legs and Wing case. I like it... And need to try it it's said to be a very productive fly thanks Sir Matt have a great weekend Sir.
Great fish catcher. I tie these with uv ice dub for the hot spot in many different colors trailing a small soft hackle, deadly combination. Thanks Matt for sharing.
@@SavageFlies speaking of pheasant feathers have you seen a Gartside Sparrow (Barry Old Clarke) uses Pheasant Marabou, as well as a couple other feathers from the skin, and some dubbing to make a muddler minnow. I think it was Jack’s original recipe for feathers from the 70’s. It might be another good Pheasant skin candidate.
You bet Tom! I'm sure this would work in your neck of the woods. And I think you might have a few better streams in Scotland than they do in France. :-)
If I had to pick 1 fly to fish year round it would be a #16 frenchie. I like to tie mine with a soft hackle tail. A fun variation is to use marabou for the wing case. A simple brown or black marabou with a slim, pink or red hot spot is my go to. A Lance Egan trick is to put a little Hard As Nails under the pheasant tail abdomen for added durability.
That's an interesting take. I've never heard of putting Hard as Nails under the body. I think your version with the marabou sounds pretty impressive. Thanks for the note my friend!
@@SavageFlies Yeah, I was totally inspired by Fly Fishing Soft Hackles by Allen McGee. In particular I was inspired by his use of marabou. And, I'm not sure if Lance Egan uses hard as nails, but it's my go to for wrapping flash and pheasant tail. I did get the idea from Lance watching him tie his version of the Frenchie at Fly Fish Food.
Well if you want to see something even simpler, I've got a video of Walt's Worm in the can. I'll be posting that one day next week. It is so simple it was almost embarrassing to record. :-) I got your last email- good stuff; thanks! I'll respond tomorrow or so. Busy day here and I get to go fishing all day Saturday. Oh yeah!
Thanks Matt, another good quick tie. I have some beads somewhere and I found a spool of fluorescent thread. I will try this one out. Beads are hard for me to deal with LOL.
Thanks Jim. One tip for beads, put the hook in your hackle pliers and reach it into the packet (or if you have a bead mat that works well too.) Just remember to put the pointy end into the small hole in the hook. I don't know how many times I got that part wrong. :-)
Nice work Matt. I have lots of these in my boxes. Pink, orange and chartreuse hot spots, but I usually split the hotspot 50/50 thread and ice dub. Cheers!
Thanks Darren! Honestly, this is the first time I've ever tied it without the ice dub. Since I'm tying from Lyle's book in this series I did it with thread only. But you know, using the dubbing really doesn't take any longer. Plus, with a fuzzy dubbing, you don't have to be too perfect. :-)
Instead of building a thread dam for a head I wrap 2/3 of the body with pheasant tail and the rest with pink ice dubbing, because it flashes in the water. just preference
Yep, I think a little pink (or even bright green) ice dub can look awesome. I've tied a few like that too and it really doesn't take any longer. Thanks for the note!
@@SavageFlies haven't tried it. It should be similar to the Rhode that I have, you need to have them close to your mouth and pointing at you. I'm actually looking for an upgrade, getting a real shotgun mic
NICE ONE MATT...HEY ANY RECOMMENDATIONS ON UV LIGHT AND RESIN...CANT BELIEVE I HAVE NOT GOT THEM YET....THANKS MATT AND AS ALWAYS I WILL BE WATCHING...
Thanks Joe! I know a lot of people like the Loon, but I use this cheaper stuff from Riverruns. You get three tubes: a standard, thick and thin, plus a light for about the price of one tube of Loon. amzn.to/2KJ0FYa
Honestly, I probably tie it more often with the ice dub on the thorax/hot spot. It doesn't really take any longer. (But this series is based on Lyle's book so... thread only here!)
Adult trout don't see UV light. Fry do, but adults lose the ability. And shining a UV light on a UV material shows what the material looks like under intense UV light to me and you. Do UV materials look different to trout under 3' to 6' of water? I do not know. I'm curious to know the answer to that question.
Thanks Dave! You know, I think this might work better because it gets deep quicker. I do like the looks of this with some ice dub on the thorax, but keeping it compact almost like a perdigon does help get it down to the zone. :-)
Simple pattern that just wprls.great tie
Thanks matt
Thanks Mike! Always appreciate you watching. :-)
One of my go tops....simply catches fish
Thanks Russell, and yep, these simple flies can be killers!
Sometimes simple flys catch more fish .good tie matt👍
Oh yeah, and thanks for watching Hugh!
cool another easy fly that looks awesome
Thanks man, appreciate you watching!
Thanks Matt good morning everyone

Appreciate it Layton!
i have caught tons of fish of this fly .Thanks for sharing Matt!!!
Thanks James! I'll probably be tossing this a few times this weekend. :-)
Another nice pattern, primarily pheasant. Thanks Matt.
Thanks Lee, and yep, we could tie all day with a tail and a few pheasant feathers. :-)

Wonderful! I just gobbled up this book and was hoping to find an example of some.
Great little fisher. Thx Matt🙂

Nice one Matt definitely looks a fish catcher thanks for sharing

One of my favorites, thanks Matt!
Another fine job Matt. I have a dozen or so in my fly box. Thanks Matt.
Thanks Butch! And yeah, I keep at least a half dozen of these in my nymph box at all times. :-)
Nice fly
Hard to find a simpler one unless you just did a thread body. Nice!

Very productive pattern. I do like the Coq de Leon tail though.
Thanks Jim- and I agree. A tail with CDL or even a couple strands of hen does give it a little more life.
Really cool “shiny” bug here Matt!
Thanks Sarge! Another bug that looks like absolutely nothing in the real world. :-)

Great man, glad you FINALLY got it! Let me know if that mic works well for you. I tried it once and ended up going back to the Boya.
