I’m telling you Brother, these Smoky Mountain Series flies are flat out “Bad A$$”. What a great job of tying another impressive fly. Loving these videos. You’re killing it. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, skills and hard work. Great pattern.
@@troutaddictnl7696 Hey Chris, I started tying during COVID and have really made a lot of ground. I have a nice place to my passion and my wife fishes with me wish I could show what I have been doing. The book is going to be amazing and a great asset. I started at the right time just a little late in life lol, the internet has been very helpful. Thanks for the congrats 👍
Hi from Rolla Missouri.🎣🤠. I found it helps to wax the thread a little bit before tying down the lead wire. It helps to hold the squirrel tail without twisting. Good luck and health always to you and your's Dave Hughes 🎣🤠
Good Morning Sir Matt great video. I think it would be awesome you teaching us how you make your dubbing. I have experimented but wasn't happy with my results lol. Have a great weekend Sir. Congrats Jim Holland that's awesome you Won 😁. Happy Fishing and Tight Lines Sir Matt.
Just ordered some boxes for dubbing and some yarn. I like the Fly every time I do it my hair roles around the hook. Like everyone said a class on Bubbing would be nice. Wife has alot of different yarn. Thanks. Keep it Tying.
Thanks Pablo! Will have a DIY dubbing video soon. And BTW, some materials are a lot harder to get to stay on the thread than others. Squirrel is a little harder than rabbit, and beaver or seal can be really tricky! What can help a lot is mixing in just a little bit of synthetic for some of the harder-to-dub furs.
@@SavageFlies I acquired some ringneck pheasant skins 4 years ago and I want to tie more flies with these gorgeous pheasant feathers. I have looked around but I don't see any Pheasant feather ties much.
@@SavageFlies Is it okay to post a link that can help fly tiers for materials. I found this company and they have some free shipping on lots of items. Please advise I don't want to post wrong. www.anglersall.com
@@SavageFlies you're gonna do a pheasant skit series!?!?!! I have long wanted someone to do a a series like that as I have two rooster skins and a hen. I've only found one other channel that made a few and I don't believe he is continuing to make videos on the topic. Unfortunately I missed your announcement on the new series
@@JamesMcCutcheon -You are correct! And they are beautiful birds and VERY useful to a tier. But guess what... I just bought five ringneck cock pheasant skins this week. I'm going to start a series of 12 flies that primarily use these feathers. I'm going to take volunteers of anyone who wants a skin, I'll send it to them, but they have to commit to inventing a fly that I can tie for the channel. It'll be a fun experiment. We might get some crazy looking flies, but that's one of the things that make fly tying so cool. Stay tuned for the series, probably starting right before Thanksgiving, and if you want to participate since you've already got some skins, that would be great! :-)
I bought a good pair of clippers and worked as gently as I could, but I just could not get the squirrel to stop wiggling and biting me while I shaved it. Any pointers? Thanks for the helpful videos.
Thanks! I'm sure you've got lots of exotic materials you could make dubbing from down under. :-) I do plan on making a DIY dubbing video here in the next few weeks. I just need to do some fur dying first. Cheers. -Matt
You got it! I didn't mention it, but I have boxes like that squirrel one for raccoon, opossum and one for all synthetics. Probably enough dubbing to last the rest of my life. I'll do a video soon. :-)
Very nice nymph. I would like a video on creating dubbing. I have done dubbing a pinch or two at a time. I have not resorted to the coffee mill technique yet. I have hand stacked some deer tail colored hair by hand as well to sort by size for tying streamer patterns.
Thanks Lee. And will do. I didn't mention it, but I have boxes like that squirrel for raccoon, opossum, and an all-synthetic one too. JStockard actually sells the small 12-compartment dubbing boxes, like the ones you get when buying pre-mixed dubbing. Usually around $3, I bought a bunch once when the were on sale even cheaper. www.jsflyfishing.com/hareline-12-compartment-drilled-dubbing-box
@@nlcirque -No animals I would really avoid, though some are harder to work with than others. Seal (or imitation seal) is a pain to work with. And rabbit and fox can be so similar as to be almost interchangeable. As for hunting, I haven't really hunted in decades. I do let folks hunt and trap on my farmland in exchange for some skins here and there. But honestly, I live in a rural area so a lot of my pelts are from roadkill (raccoons, opossum, fox, and squirrel if needed). I do have enough hunter friends who will give me enough bucktail every year to last a lifetime. :-)
Great one!!! This one is on the more realistic ones! Matt, how many flies do you think you have tied? Loved the ending with the silver stacking ad! Lol. Yeah, that has to be because of Sarge's videos!
Otto, thanks my friend! How many flies have I tied? That's a good question. I can tell you that this year, since starting this channel, it has been more than any other year before! Let me think about it... in a typical year, since about 2015, I would probably tie about 2-3 dozen of the six or so main patterns I fish with. That's really only about 200 flies a year. And not a whole lot of variety! But since starting this channel earlier this year, I've probably tied another 500 or so. That's probably 150 different patterns, 3-4 of each. The problem is that I probably USE much less than 200 flies in a year. I would love to use more, but I only get to fish a couple of days a month. So I end up with a bunch of flies stockpiled that I just give away. Maybe I should give them away on the channel. That's a good idea. :-) Thanks for watching. I hope you have a video for us tomorrow. I can't wait!!
Eric- I think your way (using body hair for the tail) actually looks better. It is how Dave Whitlock ties his. And he's pretty emphatic about not using tail hair for the tail. It's just a little harder sometimes, and I'm not a purist so I'll use squirrel tail hair on lots of mine. BTW, you should try squirrel tail sometimes. It stacks well, and makes great hair wings for some streamers, and even a decent wing on some caddis patterns. If you don't have easy access to squirrel tails, I think I got a ziplock back of them one time off Ebay for pretty cheap. :-)
I'm going to have to do that one Dennis. I've got to use that new tail for something! I'll play around with that Friday night for Saturday's video. If you see it, Saturday morning it worked. If you see something else, that means I failed. :-)
@@SavageFlies do you leave your guard hair on rabbit and squirrel full length or do you cut it shorter? I’ve been just taking my clippers and cutting all off and mixing

Yes on the DIY dubbing video. Does it involving a coffee grinder?
Yep! You could do it without, maybe use some wire brushes, but the coffee grinder makes it fast and blends it really well.
