Hook: Mustad 9671 hook, size 14.
Bead: Gold.
Weight: Lead free wire.
Thread: Light brown.
Tail: Goose biots, brown.
Body: Peacock herls.
Rib: Fine gold wire.
Beard/collar: Brown hackle fibers.
Horns: Goose biots, white.

some folks gasp at the price of a good vise. unfortunately it`s the price of quality. The indexer is sweet but a bit more than I could justify. I have the barracuda jr. Does everything I could ask especially after getting used to using the rotary function with confidence. Although it was a couple bills I`m quite happy with my purchase and it travels well. Buy a nice vise...buy quality tools..it will pay off in the long run. ty for the vids. Your approach to instruction is calm and reassuring. And your way to tie down counter wraps was a god send. Keep up the good work and tight lines

OUTSTANDING - i think this fly has to be a top-10 to have in your flybox - next to the Woolly Bugger, I believe i have had the most success with the Prince Nymph.

It certainly can be, but with adjacent wraps of peacock herl, the more open spiral wraps of wire are crossing over it rather that sinking down between the herls. In other words, the wire is still containing and protecting the herl. Counterwraps can have their own problems, but they are simple enough to fix. See our American Pheasant Tail Nymph video.

I currently use a Dyna-King Ultimate Indexer and love it, but it is more vise than most people need, it's also a bit pricy. That said, an inexpensive vise that will last a lifetime is going to be tough to find. My advice is to try as many as you can before buying and then get the best you can possibly afford, it will be worth it in the end. Cheap vises that don't hold hooks securely are a royal pain and can even be dangerous.
My father had a Thompson A vise and it has 2 sizes of jaws. That was in the 1960's. It still works fine today. Lee Wulff could tie flies w/out a vise. A great vise will not make a great tyer. Just my opinion. Practice practice practice.

Jay, try a Regal, its the first vice I ever bought, have tied size 22 midges to 4/0 striper flies, the retail around 160-170 from Cabelas and probably cheaper from ebay, Ive used renzetti, dyna-king, nor-vise, griffin, peak, Thompson...all excellent, but offer nothing substantial over the Regal, mine is a standard, C-Clamp Non rotary, Regal offers all types though..check them out
Here's a trick... wrap the herl around the thread and then form the body for a really tough fly. Also, tie in the white biots and fold the ends over the back, then cut off. You should be able to get less thread build up behind the bead that way.

Very late, but he uses a variety of vises. He has regals and dynakings. I'd recommend the renzetti traveler 2000. It's a full rotary vise, and can hold hooks from a size 28 up to a 4/0, and comes in at 189.99. It has a lifetime warranty and you can buy the parts separately in case something breaks or the jaws get bent.

It's a great tie; thanks for the video. I think I already know the answer but is that a brass bead? I'm used to tungsten but it would be a very heavy fly with a tungsten bead and lead wire!

@tightlinevideo, I am tying a prince nymph on a jig hook. Have you seen a difference between tying the jig upside down or not? I've seen prince jigs tied upside down but am unaware how big a difference it really makes due to the nymph drifting through fast currents. If you tied this pattern on a jig hook, which method would you use? Thanks, and thanks for all your videos, they're the best.

Hey tightens! Love the videos been watching for a while. Just wondering. I recently started tying this pattern and compared my pattern to a store bought one. I looked and saw that the "horns" were on the bottom of both of the flies that I bought. Is this just another way to tie this? If so are there any advantages?
solobeats7 Never seen that before, unless the flies you purchased were on a jig hook which rides upside down with the hook point up. I can't imagine the fish would care which side they're on, it's just easier to tie with the horns on top.

Where can I find the brown neck? I've been looking on JStockard... Not sure what price range I should be looking for. I have found it on Orvis, but don't particularly like their fly tying materials. Thanks.
Try using brown India hen back. The mottled appearance only adds to the attractiveness of this fly.
What sizes and stuff
I am new to tying and have many of the tools. What would you recommend I do for all the materials without spending a ton of money?
Good luck on that one. I've learned that going cheap means inferior materials. Specific feathers have specific characteristics, and so do many of the synthetic materials. Good luck
I kinda disagree. Nice thin dry fly hackle is the right stiffness for the collar. Use the bases of your saddle opposed to the top half you use for drys.
