    There is life out there dan, just more frustrated anglers lol, your rig is nearly the same as the one I use , I use braid hair, size 4-10 wide gape gripz hook, same mono hooklink as my mainline, you use abit of tubing over the eye of the hook, I use a gardner kicker(hookaliner ),over the hook, neaten up the hook, I use between 4-20" hooklink lengths and a running rig with a stonze weight, pva mesh bag on the hook, and depending where I fish on the trent, will method mix around my stonze weight, keep up the good work mate, maybe I'll see you on the trent oneday, stay safe and healthy dan, cheers Craig

    Dan I’ve just this minute subscribed to you because I don’t just enjoy your videos but I love your passion for your sport. I’m an old pike angler that’s gonna have a go for the babel for the first time this summer so you’re ahead of me in that department 👍👍

      Thank you Stephen thats great feedback. I know lots of anglers who pike fish in winter and barbel fish in summer which is a nice balance I think. Good luck mate

    I do my carp rigs the same way, only without the silicone tubing. I may have to try that. Thanks for the tip!!

  • @richardduce1209
    @richardduce1209 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Agree with that. The stronger the better on those snaggy little rivers. 10-12 pound line is about right imo.

    • @dangoesoutdoors897
      @dangoesoutdoors897  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definetly Richard. Makes me cringe when people use too light tackle and they say 10lb line is carp tackle so they don't use it

    • @richardduce1209
      @richardduce1209 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why use 6 pound line on a hair rig on those small rivers? You can't give fish a yard or they are in a snag in a lot of instances. I use 10 pound coated braid hook length with big hooks and baits on the small yorkshire rivers. I lose few fish and they all go back well with no mouth damage.

    • @dangoesoutdoors897
      @dangoesoutdoors897  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly Richard. What coated braid do you use? I can't find lighter then 15lb and would be interested to try a 10lb version

    • @richardduce1209
      @richardduce1209 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A year before Eric's closed I managed to get a load of sufix sheath skin in 10 pound for about £3 a spool! It's perfect for the job. The reason I moved over to the coated stuff was I had a barbel explode a 12 pound mono knot less knot going for a snag! Also had heavy mono links part on underwater rocks. Can't have that. Not sure how available the sufix stuff is now though. Didn't gardner do a coated braid called speciskin that was geared to more barbel, tench and specimen coarse fish? That came in lower breaking strains and smaller diametres.

    I hear the word zig and think of package holidays, Burberry caps and the crazy frog song, reminds me of zombie like conformity, haaaa. The only simple rig is a Drennan Specialist tied to line, nothing else, cheap and never lets you down.

    Coated braid is designed for making up short hook links, use too much and it won’t lay flat.

    Love this and have made my first rigs this evening. I did seem to damage the braid every time I tried to insert the hook through the silicon. Easy solution, put your nylon loop through the silicon, next insert the hook, once the silicon is up the hook shaft then use the nylon loop to pull your braid through..

    Hi Dan. Great vid as always. Just wandering what pva mesh do you use on river for faster water, I've tried a few some seem to melt way to fast

  • @barbelover
    @barbelover 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Dan, why you don't use Fluorocarbon instead of mono for your hooklength ? Fluoro is much heavier than any mono, braid or coated braid you can think of with a specific gravity of 1.7 and virtually invisible in water...maybe the river bottoms are not very rocky like those where I used to fish ?

    • @dangoesoutdoors897
      @dangoesoutdoors897  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far I've had no problems with mono and most of the fluorocarbons I've used have been a bit stiff for barbel fishing in my opinion. Worth thinking about though. Thanks mate

    • @barbelover
      @barbelover 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dangoesoutdoors897yes Dan its stiffness could spook the barbel but that still remains to prove... I use Fluoro more for its density and its better transparency especially in clear waters; stay safe mate !

    Hi Dan. Great tips buddy!! What's the size mm tubing you use on the hook please?
    Also the sort of size ring swivel that works for that lead clip buddy?

    • @dangoesoutdoors897
      @dangoesoutdoors897  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tubing is 0.5mm I think. And the swivels are size 8 ring swivels. Thanks for watching

  • @Accyboom

    Dan what brand and strength of main line do you use with this rig?

  • @wulfiesmodels6763
    @wulfiesmodels6763 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Firstly, there is nothing wrong with fishing light. Secondly, how many of those hooks you retrieved were barbed? Exactly, you do not need barbed hooks on Barbel! If you hook one, you should never lose one by slipping the hook due to the nature of the fish. But, you need to accept that people get snapped! In the event of that person getting snapped we can only hope they leave the least amount of tackle in the fish. A hook and its length, or just a hook. However, I will say if that hook was a barbless hook, it would more than likely drop out of the fish, before that fish was caught again. You, yourself mention getting snapped in the event of which you are guilty leaving a hook and possibly a hook length in a fish. So, why chastise it? Back to your rigs, whatever works for you. The video wasn't what I was looking for, but I watched it anyway.
