So the reason that Askeladd knew that Thors would go through the Faroe Islands is because the trip from Iceland to Norway is so long (especially using Viking longships) that you have to stop in the Faroes to resupply. And the sailors during the viking age only relaid on two different things to get to their destination. One was landmarks, and the other was sunstone.

Beyond the viking period and into the modern era as you say there is offcourse other ships who is better, but thats long after this time period.
