I am not sure I agree with Nux on this one. I thought that towards the end it was pretty clear what Garp's "allegiances" were and what he actually wanted. Talking exclusively about the show and not about future things from the anime/manga: He didn't want Luffy to be a pirate because he believed it was too dangeorus of a life since it would put him at odds with the marines and WG, which could lead to an end similar to Gol D Roger. He wanted to stop Luffy from getting to the Grand Line, because that was the basically the point of no return. As for his freakouts? He didn't want Luffy to be a pirate, that was his own personal desire as a grandfather. So while he is willing to support Luffy's choice, that is not what he wanted to do. Hence the freakouts. He was angry at Luffy for choosing this path, he was happy that Luffy had grown the way he did and he was sad that he would have to let Luffy go. I think it made a lot of sense the way he behaved and how he acted once you have the full story.
Got to disagree with your guys's take on Garp. His behavior through the entire series makes complete sense. He watched his rival who he respected, Gold Roger, be executed. He didn't want the same for his grandson. So he kept trying to sway him toward becoming a marine. And when he found out Luffy had started assembling a crew and plan to leave the east blue, he used his resources as a vice admiral to pursue him, capture him, and prevent him becoming a pirate that would get the notice of the world government. This was laid out clearly in his conversation with Zeff. He hid this goal behind his marine duty, which explains his outward antagonistic behavior. Putting up a front for other Marines. Over the course of the story, Garp realized that it was a futile effort as he wouldn't be able to change Luffy's mind. So he needed to make sure he was strong enough to brave the grand line.
I like how it was Koby, the kid originally conflicted when learning his ideals weren’t really as black and white as they should have been, who made it clear to Garp “Luffy knows exactly what he is and that’s a pirate”. He understood Luffy well even after only knowing him briefly before they went their separate ways.
Agreed I loved Garp in this series. I don’t get why people are complaining about him. This is basically exactly what he did in the anime but just way earlier.
Agreed. People hating garp and saying he is wasting navy resources, lol garp is the hero of the marines and a vice-admiral slated to BE admiral. haha if anything that is his personal division and he can do whatever the f he wants, plus the marines get a portion of the plunder of the warlords lol. If anything they have the budget for it. People forgot garp threw a planet size cannon ball at the strawhats in alabasta. You think they bothered recovering that after garp threw it lol hahaha P.S. Garp is aware that the marines is corrupt as well, using the marine's resources to better his family is the least of his worries...if these so called "fans" are actually fans of one piece they wouldve understood garp's motivation in this and not throw random things like he's wasting resources cause pretty sure garp gets away with wasting a lot of resources in the anime.
Garps motivation is solid. he works for the marines but his allegiance is his family. his freakouts was that his grandson was going to be hunted by the world government and theres nothing he could do that would have made him not. He breaks the rules constantly of marines and thats why he eventually gets force retired
Probably telling of how I don't know one piece, but what's the difference between Gatling and Jet Gatling? I don't care for spoilers I've already been spoiled on just about everything
@@faintduch6630 Jet Gatling is an upgraded version of Gatling, when Luffy is using Gear 2 which is a power-up that makes him much stronger and faster. Basically his fists go fast enough in Gear 2 that you barely see them.
@@IamGrimalkin No, storm was the cinematic orchestra accompanied final move he used to beat Crocodile. One of the more memorable finishes to a fight because of it IMO.
Unlike most people who hates that they introduced Garp this early., I actually love it., cause if my grandchild wants to journey on treacherous path, Id also would want to see if he is prepared and try to teach him a lesson that it will not be easy and the marines and other pirates will be after him, it also shows how he loves Luffy and would make the guilt, Garp felt when Ace died because he failed Rodger be more impactful than the anime and manga, cause he already failed here in preventing Ace from becoming a pirate if you think about it
Yeah. I get why some people would be confused if they have no knowledge of the character? But his character arc seemed really apparent to me. Garp's arc in this season is him grappling with his desire to keep Luffy safe, and his love of seeing his grandson live freely. This comes to a head when Koby confronts him about Luffy in Episode 6, and he decides to instead test Luffy rather than simply capturing him. (Basically a harsher version of his "throw him into the jungle and see if he lives" style training.") This is just bringing forward some of the conflicts he will face when Ace gets caputred.
43:13 It was extremely evident what garp's motivation was after episode 5, where he literally talks about it with Zeph, like, he doesn't want Luffy to die like Gold Rodger, and Luffy has literally no idea what he is in for on the grand line, so he's going to get himself killed, and he gets angry whenever things don't go his way. Honestly my dad is just like that so maybe it's just obvious to me, but I don't think it was ever supposed to be a twist ending, especially if you already knew who Garp was from the anime, idk
He literally said to Zeff: "And look what happened to [Roger]; skewered by Marine polearms. I don't want my [grandson]... I don't want the boy to suffer the same fate." ^His concern is front-and-center, but these guys missed it entirely and jumped to conclusions -_-
@@Omegafire17 For some reason every influencer seems to miss this. Everyone takes what Garp says in this episode at face value... While it's really just Garp's way of admitting defeat. He can't change Luffy no matter how hard he tries and this is his way of making peace with that realization.
I dont think garp was done that bad, everything we saw was his concern for luffy that he hid behind duty until he realized nothing he could do would stop him he let go
Personally I kinda like that he’s involved early here. Considering we know what the future entails to these two, it’s understandable that Garp would go to great lengths to make sure that such a situation won’t happen. But seeing Luffy so resolute solidifies things for him and now the path is permanently set.
My mom (who's VERY picky) and I watched the live action and loved it, and legit, two days later my 75-year old aunt (never seen an anime in her life) called us up and, no provocation or hint from us, asked if we had seen One Piece yet.
Man, my mom saw me watching it and said she had enjoyed it when she saw it with my dad whos like in his early 60s (and has never actually watched any anime...that is, outside of random times he would sit down with us when we had commandeered the living room tv to watch dbz when we were younger and waited for it to end so he can watch his soccer or whatever). Honestly, it's awesome that it appeals to such a wide audience.
See, that's how you do an adaption. Even my fuckin' parents liked it and they're in their 70s now. Just goes to show the difference that love for the source material makes when producing a show. Edit: Jamie Lee Curtis for Kureha, season two. Come on!
Agreed, my mom literally recommended to my grandma she thought it was so much fun. I just told my parents that it was based on an anime so not to take it too seriously.
Garp was initially trying to prevent luffy from becoming a pirate, his motivation throughout wasn't always to just test Luffy, that became his goal after Koby convinced him that Luffy was a pirate. In my opinion, I feel like garps development in this season could really play a role later down the line during Marineford
Exactly. When he gets the marines on deck, he tells them "Our mission has changed" but then tells them to basically double down on what they were already doing. HIS mission had changed, but he couldn't let everyone else know that
He used Gatling against Kuro. Technically it’s not early, it’s late. Against Lucci it was Jet Gatling, he’d already used the normal version in multiple arcs.
Garp tried to change luffy one last time before he got a bounty. Now he’s on his own, meaning garp is not taking any more responsibility for his grandson (probably what happened with dragon too). To me it all makes perfect sense.
Im surprised you dont understand Garps character. I thought it was pretty well done showing that he cares deeply about family, and after he found out that Luffy is running around "playing pirate", he is using his pull and resources to try and get to his grandson and put a stop to the shenanigans before he ends up getting in actual trouble. He clearly doesnt want Luffy to end up in jail or dead, and pirates seem to end up that way a lot. Even most of the alive and free ones seem pretty bitter and unhappy overall. He realized that Luffy isnt going to change and will keep pursuing being a pirate, so he went and clapped him up in one last round to test his resolve. After that, he is just a supporting grandfather. He was clearly using the "we are marines so we catch ALL pirates" as an excuse to justify wasting all the marine resources chasing no names when he does have plenty of other, and actual bad, pirates he could use those resources chasing. This also reflects back when he tells Koby that there are different rules for different pirates. But that is pretty real. Most people would go above and beyond and waste company resources if it meant protecting family. I dunno. To each their own. I get you like the other portrayal of Garp more, but I think he is really well done in LA and he feels very real and true to character the whole time. Edit: I dont know how they could have had Garp make it known exactly what his true purpose was sooner without seeming really contrived. He was coopting resources for personal reasons (which is also why he refused to call marine reinforcements when the sail was wrecked and under repair) so he definitely would not have said that crap out loud, and the first time he seemed to have a real chance to do so, he did (when he was talking to Zeff and Zeff called him out)
I love that luffy is basically adhd, he'll not listen when he's supposed to but then get hyper focused on some things like what he should do for zorro that is laid up
I feel like the signs were there the whole time when it comes to Garp's motivations. He pursued Luffy as he would every other pirate. like a, "If you want to be a pirate, prove it to me," sort of thing. But he also seen the deeds Luffy had done, too. He knows that while Luffy is a pirate, he's not the kind of pirate he typically chases. He wanted Luffy to be a Marine so he could learn these values and seek justice for those who can't for themselves, but he realizes he was doing that all along and has the same potential that he himself had. At least that's what I got from watching this myself. I've never seen the anime, though, so I can't speak to anything from that point of view. Only what I got from this live action personally. Also, Helmeppo 100% had the best progression in the whole show. In the beginning I hated him and by the end I really liked him. And it was so believable, too, even if I wish more time was spent on it. I hope we get so much more of him in the next season!
Garp is literally the same person as in the manga, he just cares more about Luffy in this adaptation. Idk what Garp y’all are thinking about but Garp literally just does whatever he wants in the manga and no one can stop him. Any time Luffy does some piracy Garp literally just laughs and says “that’s my grandson”, Garp doesn’t care that Luffy’s a pirate in the manga, he cares (just like in this adaptation) that he might not be ready for everything in the grand line, they just showed it earlier in this adaptation. It’s just weird when y’all say “oh nami would’ve been arrested” by who, Garp? Garp don’t care, he laughed when Luffy punched a celestial dragon.
Garp wasn't trying to test him from the start. He was genuinely trying to get him at first. It was only when he talked to Koby that he decided "Okay, I get that he's not gonna stop, but I need to see it for myself if he's ready for the journey ahead". You would know this if you actually pay attention and not just make constant jokes, distracting you from certain scenes.
“I don’t understand Garp, is so cool some time and so douche other time” That’s exactly the description of what Garp is in the manga. Is chaotic and all over the place everytime. They litteraly reproduce Garp vs Luffy in water seven. (Except they didnt fall asleep during the fight) All the critics you have over Garp they did the same in manga. The biggest difference is we didn’t see the chase cause he immediatly reach him in water seven
They actually did fill us on his motivation when he talked with Zeff, although not overtly. You could even say Zeff changed his mind from hunting to stop his grandson from taking such a path to testing if he's strong enough to fend for himself in such a treacherous road. It's just being a grandfather. You know what your kid is capable of but that doesn't stop you from trying to want to protect them. I'm just saying. I've not seen the anime or manga though.
I think Garp's motivation was pretty clear. In the beginning he was chasing Luffy because he doesnt want Luffy to become a pirate, thats why he sent Mihawk. But his motivation changed after Koby convinced Garp that he cant stop Luffy from wanting to become a pirate, thus the mini fight to test Luffy determination.Pretty good on Garp's character i say.
For some reason every influencer seems to miss this. Everyone takes what Garp says in this episode at face value... While it's really just Garp's way of admitting defeat. He can't change Luffy no matter how hard he tries and this is his way of making peace with that realization.
It seems to me that when Garp said he was "testing him", he was referring to that one fight he just had. He'd been trying to stop Luffy becoming a pirate until Coby talked to him about it. Then he changed his mind and decided to test him instead. And next time he meets Luffy is in Coco village.
If you look at it as if Garp was in denile the entire show and how he just got caught up in his emotion of anger. Then look at him laughing in the fight with Luffy as him realizing that he let his emotions overtake his mind and actual goals. And finally him trying to redeem himself and we see Garp as who he is when he is not angry we see at the very end. I mean even in the manga flashbacks we see Garp being very hard on the kids and giving them fists of love.
I think you guys hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that this is a great addition to the existing world of One Piece. We got to see new interactions, some characters were arguably better in this than they were in the manga/anime.
One thing I've noticed during this series watchalong is Nux saying he didn't want a one to one adaptation but then immediately complains when a scene or fight isn't a one to one adaptation ,still had fun tho.
Garp shows his worry and fear for luffy when he was talking to zeff. It gives reason to why he was so mad knowing he kept getting away and why he was so adamant on getting him. Plus I always thought garp did whatever he did in the manga. He went on a wild goose chase just so he can make sure luffy was actually ready
The names for Zeff and Sanji are Aka-Ashi and Kuro-Ashi respectivally. In Japanese, "ashi" can refer to everything from the foot to the hip joint. It's often translated as "foot" because depending on the context it can refer to only the foot or the whole leg. That's why it's kind of confusing if it's Red Foot Zeff or Red Leg Zeff.
One big detail everyone needs to know is since Oda has been at the wheel since day one, he also said he switched some stuff up that he either couldn’t add or changed some stuff he wasn’t able to back then. Rather did stuff differently he couldn’t before
I think Garp was actually trying to stop Luffy at the beginning, but started having second thoughts after speaking with Zeff and changed his mind when he saw Gol D Roger in Luffy. Garp never said he was testing Luffy. The stuff Garp said, in my opinion, is what he realized once he saw Roger in Luffy.
- This has been Fantastic for a Live Adaptation for this series which seems to be mostly the East Blue Saga mixed with the “ Diary of Koby-meppo” & “Buggy’s Crew Adventure Chronicles” Cover stories, so I hope that they make a 2nd season which if they do another 8 or 10 episodes I can see them doing Logue Town to Alabasta - Easter Eggs in this Episode: - The Marine base we see might be Brach 16 which Nezumi is in control of - Notice on Usopp’s ketchup bottle it says “Boshi” which means Star which is what his attack names are called & it says that it was made in Syrup Village - Luffy brakes Arlong’s weapon the Kiribachi / Shark Saw just like in the manga / anime, but when he bent it just like how he did with Arlong’s nose - While Zoro & Sanji are fighting & arguing you can see an octopus statue next to a tree this is a reference to Hachi - After Sanji kicked Kuroobi into the bar you can see various tiki figures that are inspired by One Piece character designs - During the party you can see them drinking tangerine wine made locally & the the food Sanji is making maybe a recipe from his official Cook Book which Nojiko references - Nami after the fight with Arlong is wearing an outfit based on the one she wore on the color spread of Ch.107 - On Garp’s hand when he punches Luffy you can see a ring with the Marine symbol - The song as Nami leaves her mother’s grave & the ending is called “My Sails are Set” featuring Aurora - Like the new papers in the manga & anime the live action continues where Oda puts some information in them with this one referencing the island of Vira was taken over by the Revolutionary Army along with is logo which was first mention in Ch.96 / Ep.45, but as for the ads these are real - Notice next to Luffy’s poster in the Baratie is next to cards referencing Nojiko’s Tangerines, Sandra Lizard a species from Alabasta, & the mizumizu meat from Water 7 while on the left references recipes for a Tomahawk Spiny Lobster from Shokugeki No Sanji Ch.1 - When Buggy & Alvida meet you can see a Don Krieg wanted poster on the wall but it’s an earlier version & not the one we see in the episode he was in - On the Going Merry there are boxes that say Galley La company even mentions Iceberg - The barrel that the Straw Hats used to announce their dreams is the same one Luffy was in that being it is labeled with Gyoru the fishmonger from Windmill Village - On the End Credit map you can see the Cozia Island the island that Sanji escaped from the Germa - As we see Smoker you can see while he was looking at Luffy’s Wanted Poster (bounty is 30,000,000 Berries / Yen = $ 201,511.32) he was stacking stones a hobby of his - Missing Characters: Marines Commander Ripper (he become base commander) & Lieutenant Junior Grade Rokkaku of Shells Town (but they might have been in Food Foo), Soro (Hemeppo’s pet wolf that Zoro killed), Poro (Bookstore Owner of Orange Town), Hocker (Chouchou’s owner), Richie the Lion, Superhuman Domingos, 1/3 of the Tightrope Walking Funan Bros (guys Nami tricks at the start), Gyoru (Windmill Village fishmonger which was referenced on the barrel), Chicken (Gyoru’s wife but they were probably see Shanks off in the flashback), the Usopp pirate members Carrot, Pepper, & Onion, Carne (Baratie cook), Batchee (bug that Fullbody uses), Roxanne (a female Baratie customer), Mummy Mee & Daddy Dee (houseparents of a World Government-affiliated orphanage at Conomi Islands), Sam (drunk Easter Egg), Teru (carpenter at Cocoyasi Village), Johnny & Yosaku, Nako (Cocoyasi village doctor, but Zeff kind of references him), Chabo (kid from the Gosa Village), Gaimon (he was referenced in Kaya’s garden & a Baratie painting), & Hachi (which I can see him coming into the story at Sabaody)
Garp had his motivation from the moment he heard it was a pirate in a strawhat tbh. Taking a group of well trained seasoned troops would have backfired on him and his choice in taking recruits who had no experience showed that. Garp actually is more flushed out here than the anime in my opinion rn tbh
Garp here actually showed the same characteristic he showed during Marineford when Ace was about to be executed. He didn't want Luffy to suffer that, which is why in the live action, he took responsibility to chase Luffy. Which... if you think about it, doesn't make sense why he didn't do so in the manga...
46:34 In Japanese they say ashi (足) which can mean foot/leg so it doesn't really make a difference. Kuro ashi no Sanji (Black foot/leg Sanji) Aka ashi no Zeff (Red foot/leg Zeff) Red leg sounds better in English to me anyway
you guys are totally right about this show making new one piece fans. One of my brother in laws friends was telling me about this one pirate show he watched on netflix and when he started describing it i said "wait is it one piece?" and he was like "yeah, so you already watched it?" and i started telling him that theres a manga and anime and he liked the live action so much he said he would start on the anime. This was a W for One piece and the fandom i also loved it.
"you can show one piece to your dad now!" I did indeed and he loved it He was laughing his ass off during the first episode cuz he wasn't expecting luffy's abilities so the alvida finisher caught him by surprise
I support the Garp story for a few reasons: - I absolutely loved the expanded roles of Koby and Helmeppo (Helmeppo lowkey MVP of the season), and the two of them absolutely needed a strong overseer to anchor their arc. Garp was the one overseeing their training at that point in the story, so an expanded version of the cover story made sense. - Was kinda futile to save the Granddad reveal for a hypothetical Season 5/6. - It provides a stronger character to build a more developed profile of the Marines in this world around. Marines get a relatively one-sided portrayal in OG East Blue, but the moral relativism of Marines and Pirates is a central theme in One Piece. It just makes sense to bring that to prominence in Season One, to establish what will become a consistent tone in the on-going story. - I think Garp needed to exude a more serious intimidating presence for his initial introduction. So long as they round out his portrayal with goofier moments later, and let Bogard be the serious anchor to balance him out, Season One Garp will be a serviceable intro for his character. - Given how Live Action works, representing Garp's importance to the story while also going 1-to-1 with his plot presence, is impractical. Presenting Garp as he needs to be presented, without adding meat to the role beyond what the OG series does, would cause his character to fall flat - a case of "we should treat Garp as an important character because the script said so" which doesn't work in Live Action - Sure, it can be argued that other characters lost precious screen-time to Garp, but I put that more down to their ten-ep run being truncated to 8. From what we saw, I'm fully confident that 2 extra eps would have done the whole cast justice. I can't fault the showrunners for doing what they could with a reduced season order. In saying that, I hope that they either re-evaluate based on the expectation of 8-ep runs going forward, or that the success of OPLA encourages Netflix to give them the full-sized run next time
I tell myself that garp is all about not becoming an admiral because he doesn't want to play by their rules. So him wasting tons of government funding and time to make sure his grandkid is sure of himself isn't that far out of line for someone with massive amounts of strength and sway in but not a ton of oversight. He's like all these other smaller marine groups that are also off doing their own things but instead of town takeovers with corruption he's just persuing luffy with his own personal goals in mind. I don't disagree with garp being used as a plot device and his characterization is kinda all over the place. but that's how I'm letting it slide for now and I hope they kinda get into the grooove of who they want garp to be in future seasons. Also I think not letting fans in on it was used because people who aren't familiar with one piece don't know who garp is as a person, so I think it was focusing too hard on plot twisting on those people
Showed my 60+ year old father the first two episodes and he was very engaged with the series so far. Looking forward to watch the remaining episodes with him this weekend.
To be fair, Usopp Hammer would've been brutal, not comedic. It's literally a guy bashing a guy in the skull with an iron hammer. Also, last I remember Luffy used gattling in the fight against Crocodile.
I would say this makes him a much more interesting character for first time watchers, most anime fans I’ve seen have the same reaction of “why is he like this” but it ends up setting him up well for newbies imo
My dad is almost 70 and has listened to my bro and I love one piece for over ten years. So he knew what it was heck would even pop in to watch with us and it seems like he wanted to try and get into it with us but I think he couldn’t get past the cartoon aspect. My bro and I had a two day watch party of OPLA and my dad asked if it was good and we said better than we expected. We asked if he would watch and he said probably not. To my surprise las night after work he asked me if I wanted to “guide him through the first episode”. I say yes and I’m assuming he mustve read some reviews or soemthing for the change I heart. After 40 minutes he hardly changed expression for his grump man face and didn’t even chuckle once, but he paused it and turned to me and said “this is awesome, I need to go make popcorn”. He even, in the kitchen, said “it’s like pirates of the Caribbean meets wizard of oz” which like yeah honestly
Even after having seen all of this wonderful reaction series, even after having made a playlist of just Nux and MetaHulk’s raw reactions to the new OPLA. Man… This was a voyage in of itself.
"oh Arlong is a hypocrite about his racism," "I don't get Garp, he has no allegiances and prioritizes his own things," yeah that's the fucking point. Bro has NOT been watching the show, they lay those things out as being their character traits pretty clearly. This is what happens when you're more focused on making memes than actually watching the show.
4:00 Gonna admit, I was kind of expecting Luffy to launch himself feet first. And after watching him get hit in the face, my mind continued with that idea for some "bells to end up ringing". By accident of course. Grandfather wouldn't want to sodmoize his own grandson on purpose.
31:30 the one he used against Lucci was "Gomu Gomu no Jet gatling", Luffy does uses the standard "Gomu Gomu no gatling" for the first time againts Arlong in the manga
Love the show and i am so happy they are getting 2 more seasons. I really really think you should do an interview with Emily Rudd (the actress that plays Nami) because theres a high chance she is familiar with your work on account of the fact she is a genuine anime weeb and i have q feeling she will do it and will be willing to discuss how she sqid that if this doesn't s her last job she ever has actual ng that she will be avle to due more than happy. I would like to know what character she would play if she could based on her personality and personal wants and you can engage very well with a conversation like that. Even smaller anime fans could happily talk about nothing but anime with a stranger who is like minded for at least an hour, no breaks.
Can't wait till they bring a perfect cast for Robin, cause she's mommy! she's everything! WE NEED A PERFECT REPRESENTATION OF BEST GIRL IN ALL OF ONE PIECE!
Very beautiful finale and cant wait for the next season. It has its ups and downs but over all this series is so fun without the anime's phasing issues although the anime has more time to flush out more details and characterization. Still 8.5/10 coming from a One Piece fan. My favorite line from this episode ; Sanji: At least I don't need three swords to prove Im a man Im a Zoro fan but that was 1 W for Sanji
I mean I think Garp just didn't want his family to go through what Roger did. He respected Roger, but saw that no matter how strong you are you will be caught and killed by the marines
I just now noticed at 30:56 there is a scripting error when Zoro mouthed Sanji's line. Taz (Sanji) is the one that asks, "Where's Luffy?", but if you look he isn't speaking, but Zoro is mouthing the line. (Taz probably forgot he had to say this and was too much into character) Most likely, this was the first take but due to time constraints, they just had Taz say the line during post so it worked
my dad actually watched the Live Action show and we had a conversation about season 2 and the future of the series. It was something i never thought would ever happen, love this show❤️
"They made Buggy look like a bigger threat than Arlong in this and that should not be the case." ...my poor sweet innocent Nux... one of them is now an Emperor of the Sea... and one is irrelevant. It's not like Buggy got any kind of power up in the manga since then he was only showing 1% of his power here!
I can accept all the changes made, except for the "Bad Timeline" Ben Beckman we got hanging out in Shanks's scenes. Who let this guy on set? Did they pay him in donuts?
Rivers don't typically go UP mountains, but they flow down all the time. Unless that map somehow shows the direction the river flows, there's no way Nami would conclude that the river flows up the mountain.
@@tranatkikomi6873 Could be, it it could just be the river looks *really* thick in that map (clearly large enough for a ship to go up, anyway). Rivers can go down mountains, but when they're at the top they're little springs.
Point is, the "river" comes from a spot of water on the top that needs to come from somewhere. The only logical conclusion is that it goes up somehow, because of it was going downwards, that spot of water wouldnt be on the top.
Sorry nux you are wrong about the red foot thing this text below straight from the one piece wiki In his prime, Zeff was renowned as a master of extremely powerful kicks. Because of the immense power of his lethal kicks, his shoes were often coated in the blood of his enemies - hence his "Red-Leg" epithet.
With the gsrp thing towards the end, I feel like they did his character this way for the people who haven’t seen one piece, it’s a nice little twist at the end that he’s actually on luffy’s side, I liked it anyway. Throughout the film he kept seeming proud of him, so it felt consistent
Personally, i think Season 2 should end with Alabasta... You would have Smoker chasing them... intro of both Robin and Chopper... and Crocodile being the main villian... It would round it off perfectly... and trying to squeeze in skypeia and water 7 would condense it too much...especially since franky would need to be added. Season 3 should be Skypeia; Water 7 and Enies Lobby... with CP9 being the main villians... it could introduce the marine internal politics perfectly during that season... Season 4 rounding off with Sabody, Impel Down and Great War arc roundout... leading into a close out into the training arc timeskip... Season 5 would be the speed up... Fishmen Island, Punk hazard and Doflamingo Season 6 covering Cake Island and Mink Alliance with the possible build up to Wano... though combining the two might work. I also believe that the seasons cannot be condensed too much in the early arcs as a lot of story building happened... as the show progressed it would be easier to condense the arcs. I also think they will most likely introduce Jimbei sooner than the anime/manga... as i doubt they will wait until season 4 (Above to add him)... i think by end of Season 3 all the current crew members will be present...
I showed one piece to my 80yo grandpa, he loved it so much that between episodes (we watched 1 a day at dinner) he was looking up the show and the character stories on his computer. I neglected to inform him what rule 34 was though, but he was just mildly amused by his new "research" into why nami is depicted with huge boobs haha
"you could show one-piece to your dad now." My dad hated the anime when we were kids (he hates anime in general). I recommended the live action to him and he said it was good.
Garp did say he stayed a vice admiral insted of climbing the ladder, to keep his freedom, unless Sengoku gives him a direct order he does whatever he wants.
Garp is a great grandfather. Only a family man would whoop his grandchild’s ass in order to prevent them from leaving home.
Similar scene happens in Dead Mount Death Play
I am not sure I agree with Nux on this one. I thought that towards the end it was pretty clear what Garp's "allegiances" were and what he actually wanted.
Talking exclusively about the show and not about future things from the anime/manga:
He didn't want Luffy to be a pirate because he believed it was too dangeorus of a life since it would put him at odds with the marines and WG, which could lead to an end similar to Gol D Roger.
I misread the “great grandfather” in your post. Now I’m wondering what kind of child Luffy could possibly spawn.
Great grandfather? Luffy has a child?
Something tells me you didn't watch any spoilers from anime, but may your mind stay pure from spoilers
You think they bothered recovering that after garp threw it lol hahaha
Yes! Also with this Garp. his Regret in Marineford makes so much sense, especially if you know who Luffy's Father and Brother is.
Garps motivation is solid. he works for the marines but his allegiance is his family. his freakouts was that his grandson was going to be hunted by the world government and theres nothing he could do that would have made him not. He breaks the rules constantly of marines and thats why he eventually gets force retired
Luffy's first use of Gatling was literally in Syrup Village against fodder enemies.
What he uses against Lucci is Jet Gatling.
@@faintduch6630Jet gattling when luffy in his gear 2 form (he’s faster in that form)
I think k he might have been mixing it up with Gum-Gum Storm, which we do first see being used in Enis Lobby I think.
@@IamGrimalkin No, storm was the cinematic orchestra accompanied final move he used to beat Crocodile. One of the more memorable finishes to a fight because of it IMO.
Garp would absolutely use Marine funding and resources for his own selfish means.
frrr i think garp has really skewed morals esp in the manga
(Basically a harsher version of his "throw him into the jungle and see if he lives" style training.")
This is just bringing forward some of the conflicts he will face when Ace gets caputred.
Hmmm... This choice might pay off big when Ace is introduced, if they get that far.
@@nerdifymusic7322It would hurt more than hell.
43:13
It was extremely evident what garp's motivation was after episode 5, where he literally talks about it with Zeph, like, he doesn't want Luffy to die like Gold Rodger, and Luffy has literally no idea what he is in for on the grand line, so he's going to get himself killed, and he gets angry whenever things don't go his way.
I don't want the boy to suffer the same fate."
^His concern is front-and-center, but these guys missed it entirely and jumped to conclusions -_-
@@Omegafire17 For some reason every influencer seems to miss this.
Hmmm yeah I’ve always thought he was testing luffy fighting and morals because garps thought luffy was gonna be an evil pirates
I agree
Yes, I really liked Garp in the live action.
It's the character work, whenever the writing can't make it work the actors does the heavy lifting. I love this production
I'm surprised Nux hasn't realized why Live Action Zoro hates calling out moves.
It's because he can't do that with all three swords.
My mom (who's VERY picky) and I watched the live action and loved it, and legit, two days later my 75-year old aunt (never seen an anime in her life) called us up and, no provocation or hint from us, asked if we had seen One Piece yet.
LOL that's wild dude
Come on!
That Jamie casting seems like a given.
Liked for JLC Kureha shout-out. Let's hope she accepts the role for fellow fans from the franchise
Agreed, my mom literally recommended to my grandma she thought it was so much fun. I just told my parents that it was based on an anime so not to take it too seriously.
Same. My parents are almost 70 and they loved this show. In their opinion, it was one of the best shows on Netflix.
I think Garp only chose to test Luffy after Coby said that it wouldn't really be a bad thing if he DID become a pirate.
HIS mission had changed, but he couldn't let everyone else know that
@@d34dstruck13Exactly. This is how to properly react, not with momentary nonsense jabberings.
“They’re holding literal sticks!”
At least Nojiko had the sense to bring Bellemere’s rifle lol
31:30 he first used it against the black cat pirates in the manga and anime. The move you're thinking of is a variant called 'jet gaitling'
Thank you for this👌🏼
Im surprised you dont understand Garps character.
“I don’t understand Garp, is so cool some time and so douche other time”
That’s exactly the description
of what Garp is in the manga. Is chaotic and all over the place everytime. They litteraly reproduce Garp vs Luffy in water seven. (Except they didnt fall asleep during the fight)
All the critics you have over Garp they did the same in manga.
I love that they saved a single F bomb for Zoro's exasperation at Buggy.
"you can show one piece to your dad now" literally what I've been planning to do 😂
41:47 even in the original, garp is truly the embodiment of chaotic good
It seems to me that when Garp said he was "testing him", he was referring to that one fight he just had.
Even when destroying his office there was a hint of laughter, I thought they made it clear he was also proud in his own way
I think you guys hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that this is a great addition to the existing world of One Piece.
Good reaction.
I totally missed the " employee of the month" gag.
The curse is broken S2. Let's go!
Omg I was getting blue balls waiting to see your reaction to this finale!!!! 😅🎉😊
Even better was dealing with an upload that clearly happened after this, referencing this, and still not getting this XD
This battle is epic! The guy playing Sanji really delivered!
Showed it to my wife, and she loved it! So happy they made this, and it was fantastic
- This has been Fantastic for a Live Adaptation for this series which seems to be mostly the East Blue Saga mixed with the “ Diary of Koby-meppo” & “Buggy’s Crew Adventure Chronicles” Cover stories, so I hope that they make a 2nd season which if they do another 8 or 10 episodes I can see them doing Logue Town to Alabasta
- Easter Eggs in this Episode:
- The Marine base we see might be Brach 16 which Nezumi is in control of
- Notice on Usopp’s ketchup bottle it says “Boshi” which means Star which is what his attack names are called & it says that it was made in Syrup Village
- Luffy brakes Arlong’s weapon the Kiribachi / Shark Saw just like in the manga / anime, but when he bent it just like how he did with Arlong’s nose
- While Zoro & Sanji are fighting & arguing you can see an octopus statue next to a tree this is a reference to Hachi
- After Sanji kicked Kuroobi into the bar you can see various tiki figures that are inspired by One Piece character designs
- During the party you can see them drinking tangerine wine made locally & the the food Sanji is making maybe a recipe from his official Cook Book which Nojiko references
- Nami after the fight with Arlong is wearing an outfit based on the one she wore on the color spread of Ch.107
- On Garp’s hand when he punches Luffy you can see a ring with the Marine symbol
- The song as Nami leaves her mother’s grave & the ending is called “My Sails are Set” featuring Aurora
- Like the new papers in the manga & anime the live action continues where Oda puts some information in them with this one referencing the island of Vira was taken over by the Revolutionary Army along with is logo which was first mention in Ch.96 / Ep.45, but as for the ads these are real
- Notice next to Luffy’s poster in the Baratie is next to cards referencing Nojiko’s Tangerines, Sandra Lizard a species from Alabasta, & the mizumizu meat from Water 7 while on the left references recipes for a Tomahawk Spiny Lobster from Shokugeki No Sanji Ch.1
- When Buggy & Alvida meet you can see a Don Krieg wanted poster on the wall but it’s an earlier version & not the one we see in the episode he was in
- On the Going Merry there are boxes that say Galley La company even mentions Iceberg
- The barrel that the Straw Hats used to announce their dreams is the same one Luffy was in that being it is labeled with Gyoru the fishmonger from Windmill Village
- On the End Credit map you can see the Cozia Island the island that Sanji escaped from the Germa
- As we see Smoker you can see while he was looking at Luffy’s Wanted Poster (bounty is 30,000,000 Berries / Yen = $ 201,511.32) he was stacking stones a hobby of his
- Missing Characters: Marines Commander Ripper (he become base commander) & Lieutenant Junior Grade Rokkaku of Shells Town (but they might have been in Food Foo), Soro (Hemeppo’s pet wolf that Zoro killed), Poro (Bookstore Owner of Orange Town), Hocker (Chouchou’s owner), Richie the Lion, Superhuman Domingos, 1/3 of the Tightrope Walking Funan Bros (guys Nami tricks at the start), Gyoru (Windmill Village fishmonger which was referenced on the barrel), Chicken (Gyoru’s wife but they were probably see Shanks off in the flashback), the Usopp pirate members Carrot, Pepper, & Onion, Carne (Baratie cook), Batchee (bug that Fullbody uses), Roxanne (a female Baratie customer), Mummy Mee & Daddy Dee (houseparents of a World Government-affiliated orphanage at Conomi Islands), Sam (drunk Easter Egg), Teru (carpenter at Cocoyasi Village), Johnny & Yosaku, Nako (Cocoyasi village doctor, but Zeff kind of references him), Chabo (kid from the Gosa Village), Gaimon (he was referenced in Kaya’s garden & a Baratie painting), & Hachi (which I can see him coming into the story at Sabaody)
Luffy did the Joi Boi silhouette as he was jumping out of the rubble of Arlong Park
46:34 In Japanese they say ashi (足) which can mean foot/leg so it doesn't really make a difference.
Kuro ashi no Sanji (Black foot/leg Sanji)
Aka ashi no Zeff (Red foot/leg Zeff)
Red leg sounds better in English to me anyway
you guys are totally right about this show making new one piece fans.
I loved seeing your reactions! Thank you both so much and all the best!
"you can show one piece to your dad now!" I did indeed and he loved it
He was laughing his ass off during the first episode cuz he wasn't expecting luffy's abilities so the alvida finisher caught him by surprise
shanks one hand tied behind his back is the best line in the episode
I support the Garp story for a few reasons:
- I absolutely loved the expanded roles of Koby and Helmeppo (Helmeppo lowkey MVP of the season), and the two of them absolutely needed a strong overseer to anchor their arc.
Presenting Garp as he needs to be presented, without adding meat to the role beyond what the OG series does, would cause his character to fall flat - a case of "we should treat Garp as an important character because the script said so" which doesn't work in Live Action
- Sure, it can be argued that other characters lost precious screen-time to Garp, but I put that more down to their ten-ep run being truncated to 8. From what we saw, I'm fully confident that 2 extra eps would have done the whole cast justice. I can't fault the showrunners for doing what they could with a reduced season order. In saying that, I hope that they either re-evaluate based on the expectation of 8-ep runs going forward, or that the success of OPLA encourages Netflix to give them the full-sized run next time
I love How buggy just dipped out!
Totally realistic.
Going back through the season It does give Garp some context. It's a shame you have to wait until the end of episode 8 to figure out what he's up to.
I would say this makes him a much more interesting character for first time watchers, most anime fans I’ve seen have the same reaction of “why is he like this” but it ends up setting him up well for newbies imo
I think his intention is made clear when talks to Zeff
"You can show One Piece to your dad now" its funny you say that, my dad's been loving the absolute shit out of this series
I’m pretty sure Garp‘s motivations were clear from the moment. He was proud that Luffi sent the canon ball back at him.
Ugghhh I loved watching this with you guys, just hate that it's over now. 😢
Nux forgetting long ring long land like a real one piece fan
I Can't 'Like' this more then once. What a great series
Even after having seen all of this wonderful reaction series, even after having made a playlist of just Nux and MetaHulk’s raw reactions to the new OPLA.
Man…
This was a voyage in of itself.
So as a scriptwriter, I will say this: its easier to expand a plot than it is to expand on an in depth story.
Garp just spends tax payers money to have fun with his grandson.
31:14 is the best shot of Arlong in this series. The size difference between him and Luffy finally looks right.
4:35
American soldier no1 : Is that an RPG!!! *starts shooting*
American soldier no2: that's a stick bro.
Thanks again for showing a first time watcher the ropes Nux
4:00 Gonna admit, I was kind of expecting Luffy to launch himself feet first.
And after watching him get hit in the face, my mind continued with that idea for some "bells to end up ringing". By accident of course. Grandfather wouldn't want to sodmoize his own grandson on purpose.
Shanks laughing at his own joke about his arm gives me life
31:30 the one he used against Lucci was "Gomu Gomu no Jet gatling", Luffy does uses the standard "Gomu Gomu no gatling" for the first time againts Arlong in the manga
Can't wait for the second season. I need Drum Island and Alabasta. Lol.
My favorite line from this episode ;
Sanji: At least I don't need three swords to prove Im a man
Im a Zoro fan but that was 1 W for Sanji
I mean I think Garp just didn't want his family to go through what Roger did. He respected Roger, but saw that no matter how strong you are you will be caught and killed by the marines
I'm convinced nux was in the writers room...man predicted the whole show
21:08 bro doesn't realize he said poster... POST-HER! He needs to UTILIZE that statement.
LESSSS GOOOOOOOOO
I wonder if the Fishman who gave Nami the tattoo will be the Hachi stand in at Sabody. Motivation to make it up to her.
It was something i never thought would ever happen, love this show❤️
"watching this wouldnt have ben as fun if it wasnt watch with you"
"nawww --checks in the mail-- your too nice maannn"
"They made Buggy look like a bigger threat than Arlong in this and that should not be the case."
...my poor sweet innocent Nux... one of them is now an Emperor of the Sea... and one is irrelevant.
It’s more than likely it does show the directional flow for her to have been confused by what she was seeing.

Could be, it it could just be the river looks *really* thick in that map (clearly large enough for a ship to go up, anyway).
Rivers can go down mountains, but when they're at the top they're little springs.
Point is, the "river" comes from a spot of water on the top that needs to come from somewhere. The only logical conclusion is that it goes up somehow, because of it was going downwards, that spot of water wouldnt be on the top.

This is the map room though, which he does intentionally destroy in the anime.
Awesome stuff. You should do this style of comentary/watchalong with the new castlevania.
Sorry nux you are wrong about the red foot thing this text below straight from the one piece wiki
In his prime, Zeff was renowned as a master of extremely powerful kicks. Because of the immense power of his lethal kicks, his shoes were often coated in the blood of his enemies - hence his "Red-Leg" epithet.
26:52 No no. In the original he definitely flattened it on purpose specifically to free Nami. That was like a MAJOR plot point.
I love how they did Usopp in this show!
Naux saying"Rizz flying out his ass" better become a meme.
Fishmen Island, Punk hazard and Doflamingo
Season 6 covering Cake Island and Mink Alliance with the possible build up to Wano... though combining the two might work.
Buggy is the ace in hole, but not the hole in the Ace.
I like how Nux said Arlong fell flat after Luffy brought the house down on Arlong.
"you could show one-piece to your dad now." My dad hated the anime when we were kids (he hates anime in general). I recommended the live action to him and he said it was good.
I really hope you do this for season 2!
Garp did say he stayed a vice admiral insted of climbing the ladder, to keep his freedom, unless Sengoku gives him a direct order he does whatever he wants.
If all the Straw Hats were TH-camrs, I always imagined Usopp being the Nux Taku of the group. With all the good and bad that comes with it.
