Dodging about left to right seemed at first an uncertainty working in the bears mind, like thinking it over or weighing the situation should I chance this strange something alone in the woods. Nonchalantly climbing the trees made an outward appearance of the bear being initially unimpressed. It was just the look of it at first resembling an act of disinterest, in like oh ..nothing to see here.

    Having dealt with my share of black bears, this guy was way too quiet. The bear seemed curious more than anything and was not acting aggressively. Being loud and getting big would likely have it turning tail and running. Second, if that didnt work and the bear keeps advancing after that, dont let it get as close as this guy did. From the video it looked like it got ten feet from him a couple of times. If the bear is voluntarily following you after youve made attempts to scare it and backed away while facing it, its getting sprayed as soon as its in range of the spray.

    • @WhiteRabbitDreams

      Why did the bear keep climbing trees while following him?

    • @KR-bn4bg
      @KR-bn4bg หลายเดือนก่อน

      @WhiteRabbitDreams that's an escape path for them. If you scare a bear enough and move in on it quick, they'll often run up a tree to get away from you. Again, this one seemed curious so it was probably trying to go tree to tree to have an escape route if it wanted one.

I didn't have bear spray or a gun, and it was backing me into a thicket of thorn bushes. I went from talking to it just like this guy to realizing that wasn't working. So In a split second decision I decided im done backing down. I put my arms up an out an screamed at it as loud as I could while stomping my feet towards it. I believe that the most humane thing you can do for a bear that is so interested in you to follow you, is to discourage that behaviour IMMEDIATELY. If yelling loudly and waving your arms (while holding your bear spray) doesn’t work, you must use the spray. This way in the future, the bear will keep its distance from humans and all will stay safe…both the bear and the humans. This is just my opinion though.

    Judging by these comments i think everybody should go out in the woods more often. We would have a lot less ignorant people that think bears are just curious and playful big dogs. Bears dont "play" with humans. That bear was sizing him up and the dude was giving every indication he was prey. If he didn't have bear spray and kept doing what he was doing he would have 100% gotten mauled. That bear was getting closer and more confident every second. My understanding (from watching another video) is that bear spray should be deployed well beyond the close range this bear gets. The other video made mention of how quickly a charging bear can cover ground and the idea of bear spray is to lay out clouds along the bear's intended path, ahead of the bear so that it has to go through the stuff to reach you. Apparently, this large bear spray canisters has some decent range. And, as noted in this video, as soon as the individual deployed the spray, the bear was off and running, so I think I'd opt for the quick deployment of any bear heading my way.

The thing about this situation is, if the guy would've been loud and aggressive rather than his soft, friendly, "hey, bear", he probably would've scared the bear off without even needing the spray. This is pretty textbook as for what to do when running into a bear. Be calm, don’t run, and slowly back away. The other other thing, like a few comments mentioned, is to put your arms up or make yourself look as large as possible, and maybe make a loud noise while doing so. Still, sometimes none of this works, and that’s why a can of bear spray is an important thing to have while in the woods.

    I think an indispensable skill in woods-craft is to be able to "read" animals' behavior...to be able to discern what they are thinking when a human/animal encounter occurs. My interpretation of this encounter is that the man did well to back up slowly in order to show the bear he himself had no aggressive intentions. However, after 50 feet of that approach, it became evident he had convinced the bear he had no evil intentions, that the bear was not in the least intimidated by him, and that now the bear was going to see how much he could impose himself on the man. When an animal develops that mindset, further retreat only reinforces further imposition by the animal. Now the animal begins to interpret further retreat as increasing fear in the man, which results in escalating aggression by the animal. I would have taken a stand at about the 50--75 foot mark and shown the bear that I am not helpless...that I have defensive weapons that can make him regret his aggression. This is, in fact, how it turned out anyway. But...had the guy waited too long, and the bear done a full out charge, it might have been too late. After all, how far can you walk backwards through woods without tripping...and triggering a charge?

What he should have done was stop, held his ground and did everything he could to waive his arms, yell, or even throw rocks/sticks and this bear would have either climbed the tree or ran away. In the rare event a black bear attacks you, you never play dead, but instead fight back attacking his eyes and sensitive snout with anything you can, even if just your hands. Sabre pepper spray works man. I have had to use it on attacking dogs as a delivery driver. I once tried to trust a 3M brand spray and after being left with the scars to prove it's absolute uselessness, I switched to Sabre. That stuff is on a whole other level, in every way. Not only does it carry the multiple sprays it advertised but it hurts SO MUCH MORE. I got blowback from both brands I used, and I mostly ignored the 3M effects. Sabre though, the blowback was so bad on ME I actually pitied the dog that attacked and had to be sprayed directly. If you NEED pepper spray, use Sabre

      Continually backing up could have resulted in a trip and fall and 100% chance of attack. And when the bear treed itself was the time to yell and charge at it a bit, scare it and make it go higher. I would have been yelling a lot louder and used the spray a lot sooner.

      Actually, in this instance, the bear spray likely would not have been needed. He should have simply stopped as soon as he realized the bear was following him, waived his arms, began yelling and doing whatever he could to scare the bear away. It would have quickly retreated or climbed the tree. Like a firearm, bear spray is always the last resort as it is literally your last line of defense and only available when the bear is too close. Deterrence is always better at a distance and while this hiker attempted to slowly walk away, it clearly did not work, so the next strategy per the behavior of the bear was to scare it.
