    This is SO TRUE!! I have a 19 lb Schnoodle. When we first adopted him, age 2, initially I ONLY fed him the Science Diet Brand dry and wet food. About 1.5 yr into having him, I wanted to try another brand because I had a tight month financially. My dog instantly got SICK. The Vet said it was because I changed his food brand and he wasn't used to it. This scared me, because what if one day when he's 10 years old Science Diet company shuts down and my dog cannot process any other brand because I never GAVE him another brand? So, I took matters into my own hands. I started switching my dogs food every single bag. A 3.5 pound bag for my dog will last him about 6 weeks (I mix with wet). I switch his food 25-75%, 50-50%, 75-25%, then 100% the new bag, so by day 4 my dog is on the new bag. I switch between cheaper brands (Beneful, Purina), medium brands (Merrick, Science Diet), and more expensive brands (Zignature, Blue Buf.); and I switch the meats: chicken, beef, turkey, duck, pork. My dog NEVER gets sick now. Basically, he has developed a strong stomach. I do not like the idea of my dog "stuck" on a brand or type of food. I thought about it, and realized that when I only fed him one strict brand, I did not allow my dog to develop a diverse range digestive enzymes. In my mind, this is similar to when a human who has been a vegetarian for 20 years has a piece of pork by accident and then get seriously ill. Because that human went so many years without eating meat, they lost the digestion enzyme to break down meat in their stomach.

    I got lucky and started following you when Lukas adopted me as a puppy and began following your feeding guidelines. He has the ability to change foods instantly at 2 years old. I feed him multiple brands and different meats/veggies every day with a rotation of about 3-4 dog food brands between raw, partially cooked, freeze dried, to kibble. The freeze dried food is used when not home or doing enrichment games with him to replace a traditional meal time plus he has kibble 24/7 for free feeding if he ever gets snacky. Never had a dog so happy at meal time like he is. Now I feel so bad that my past animals only had kibble and it was basically the same kibble their whole lives and little did I know that was the cause of some of the conditions they ended up suffering from in later years. Thank you for sharing your recipes, knowledge and time Ali! You passion shows and it is beautiful that you and your wife have this journey together. Love seeing all your videos and your latest litter is making me have puppy fever!

    I'm so happy I found you as I've been wanting to start on the journey of bettering my dog's diet (within my college student budget means). For the elm, what are your thoughts on The Honest Kitchen's Herbal Digestive Supplement? The ingredients are papaya leaf, plantain leaf, slippery elm, pumpkin seed, pectin, papain, and fennel. I saved the ingredients to avoid list and found all weren't there, but I just want to run it by you. :)

    Thank you for this! I have been on the hunt for what the best food to feed my dog is and it's been overwhelming hearing people say (for example) that raw is superior, and then someone else saying fresh is superior, then someone else saying to try dehydrated. Thank you for allowing me to explore and also know that it is helping my dog by rotating it. I do have a question: If I am rotating a different protein but within the same brand, do I still need to transition the food over 7-10 days, or just feed like before?

    • @PadFootPomsPoodlesPals
      @PadFootPomsPoodlesPals  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the brand, in most cases yes transitioning is important

      @@PadFootPomsPoodlesPals awesome! Thank you so much! I am going with Open Farm since their ingredients can be traced to where they got it from as well as having rotational options

    I do have one question. I have been feeding freeze dry raw for 3.5 yrs. Want to try something different such as cooked foods. Do I have to transition or can I go all in, including the pumpkin.

    What kind of powder/supplements do I need for my 1 year old Pom? Besides the one you just recommended?

      And should I give her the “slippery elm” in every meal ?

    • @PadFootPomsPoodlesPals
      @PadFootPomsPoodlesPals  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Slippery elm should only be used if there is an issue. If you take a look at my channel I have 2 supplement videos talking about specific supplements and the reasons to use them! Remember you want to only supplement with a purpose.

    id love to switch my puppies food up every bag/ every month but so far i’ve only heard of like 2 good types of kibble for large breed puppies so it seems impossible. defintiely open to looking for different types of food but i just wish there was more quality kibble out there. i’m so glad i found your channel because i never knew how harmful most foods are. :((

    Hi Ali me again lol. I transition from royal cannin vet recommended. After joining group I bought diamond naturals puppy kibble. I leave it down all the time. Then I ordered petplate turkey. And now have bought the vital essentials nibs. My puppie cry when I'm getting it ready for them. They love it. I chewy had a 3 pack special I ordered beef chicken and Turkey. Is it ok to continue through all the bags as they empty. They are so far doing good they didn't even transition much. Left the mixture of VE and petplate. Ate only VE. Now I'm on the search for another Transition food. It's been a journey trying to figure all this out gets alittle overwhelming at times. But I want what's best for my puppies.

      You can use up what you have. Use it as treats or soak it in water and mash into a kong. No need to waste

    I'm so lost with what to do for my dog I never knew rotation was a good thing its great to know. I have been feeding mine taste of the wild for a year she is very picky but has liked this brand however since I have been researching more I dont like the brand due to high dcm cases and just how her fur has changed and not as healthy looking. I'm on your Facebook group and looked at recommended kibble options but ever source I know has something different to say so I'm just so overwhelmed of what is the right choices of brands to try.

    How many times a day do I feed my chihuahua? I normally just leave a bowl of food down all the time 😬. She’s now over weight by a pound and some odd ounces. I’m gonna start doing or try doing the rotational mono feeding but I’m so lost on how to do it.
