  • In this episode we talk about what a harmonic balancer actually does for your car and why it's important to have a proper one. Nic installed his new ATI Super Damper on the Impreza, and we take it out for a spin!

Torsional vibration is the main reason for a damper. When a cylinder fires it actually causes the crank rod journal on the firing cylinder to twist in relation to the main journal on either side of it, like a torsion bar in a suspension system. It twists on firing and then un-twists and each rod journal does that every time the cylinder fires. The vibration damper is primarily to absorb that twist and control it to a level that won't cause the crank to fatigue and break prematurely. That torsional twist will also affect a gear train and cause gear pitting because the gears will rattle back and forth against each other as they are driven. So, yes, it is an important component of every automotive ICE engine. As you increase engine power the cylinder firing "bang" is bigger, the torsional twist is more severe and thus the need for an improved damper over stock.

On a lot of cars the damper and the pulley are different parts. If you look at those the pulley attaches to the inner part of the dampener so that the pulley is not isolated by rubber. The bit where you talk about the damper protecting against accessory drive vibrations is misinformed. The HARMONIC balancer protects against that what it says. It reduces harmonics (resonant vibrations) which can be catastrophic in many engineering situations. On many engines, it's also an external crank balance meaning there is a counter-weight attached to it that balances the rotating assembly. Removing this puts the entire rotating assembly out of balance.

Interesting assumption the motor is always detonating. Is this true, what is the evidence, and if it’s from the knock sensor counts - how do we know the counts are not just noise (from other sources which are not knock but sound like knock)?

Hey there, how was the install of the ati damper? Did you have to use a harmonic balancer/damper install kit?

  • @ordovicicosilurico6799

And what about if you use the same OEM Harmonic Balancer but with the pin kit ? it will last longer the rubber between the 2 pulleys ? will make the function of the ATI harmonic balancer ? and another question the ATI Harmonic Balancer is design to support superchargers or turbo chargers ?

Great breakdown of how a damper works. I’m planning on getting an ati for my 7m Supra. Did you do any machine work before installing the ati? I’ve heard the tolerance can be tight and sometimes needs just a little machining.

Harmonic balancers are only really needed/benefit v8 engines. It's the way the powerstrokes overlap. Less cylinders do not overlap powerstrokes, hence just a flywheel is needed. A v8 is by far smoother and better balanced than inferior less cylinder engines, the harmonic balancer works magic on the v8 making it even smoother.

smoother and better balanced than a inline 6?

    • @benzproducts

@@bigjdm5460 Yes, a v8 has overlapping power strokes creating smooth power. The crankshaft also flexes less since it is shorter and has power coming to it from more angles.

Such bull crap..how on gods earth this damper at 1 end of crank gonna damper the internals of the engine?? .. the dam damper only dampens the shock effects that is felt when all serpentine driven part are engage.. so its just for smooth engagement and transition in rpm.
Older engine were balance external ...hence it wasn't recommended to remove them ...new engines that are build by precision machinery doesn't need a external balancer.
How many engine that run harmonic balance get destroyed??? I have seen many. And let this be know that ..just buying a harmonic balancer and bolt to your modify engine that it was not balance on make no sense .

The whole video is more like Sales pitch ! You do not need a ''fancy'' heavy harmonic balancer ever. My 2006 Impreza went trough 192000 km with light crank pulley made by unorthodox racing. No vibrations no damage of any sort. Go back to the store ang get a honest simple light crank pulley instead !
